Rob Marciano and I just encountered fierce 8O+ mph winds on our walk through an open field around our hotel to the parking deck. We made it okay, but had to stop and keep our balance fighting Ike's wicked wind gusts whipping rain. When we finally got to the parking deck and caught our breath, Rob said: "Man, that felt like a tornado."
We will be back on the air shortly live from our BGAN – our digital satellite run through our mac book pro.
Its going to be a long, crazy night.

rosa entire marina area of kemah is under water.....hope you are seeing what i am seeing......as i dont want to relay to you anything incorrect.........
rosa.........ive just seen a shot of the kemah lighthouse district and there appears to be widespread damage but help is rolling into the area ...the roads seem to be above water but are often impassable.....the entire area has sustained heavy damage but have heard of no injuries as yet..........im sure your family are enjoying a hot meal somewhere courtesy of salvation army.........my prayers are with you
I live in Ohio and my 4 daughters live in the Houston area, I'm particularily worried about my youngest daughter, a single parent with a 9 yr old residing in Kemah. She owns a house right on the channel. Is there any information as to what is going on in Kemah and are the homes and roads flooded?

We always hear of downed power wires being a concern for search and rescue. Why do the power companies not shut the power off prior to land fall and eliminate that risk? They could have informed the population that at 8:00 pm last night, all power to the Galveston area will be shut down and do the same in other areas. Just a thought.
My family and I were watching in horrified awestruck wonder at the impact of Hurricane Ike on the Texan Coast and surrounding states. Our thoughts and prayers to you for the safety of you and your loved ones.
apparently while cnn is of course focused on where the eye is coming ashore.......and god help galvaston.........the rest of the whole gulf that has not recovered from katrina and rita is getting battered again .......i have friends in the new orleans area.......gustave did substantial damage last week.......levee failures could make new orleans the story of the day by mid morning along side of galvaston and houston.....anderson and the gang are doing a fabulous job bringing us the details ...thanx so much and be safe
The coverage that CNN is providing to those of us who are watching with bated breath is excellent. I know it's dark right now in Texas and the storm is becoming even more severe for everyone. I hope that the everyone is safe tonight, and that the reporters who are in the line of fire will find shelter and not risk their lives for us. Excellent job all around, but please stay safe! No one expects you to die reporting a story. My thoughts are with all those in the path of the hurricane, the crew of the ship stranded in the gulf, and the people on the train in California.
Yeah Salaina, one sure thing we can do is just pray for people who are not as comfortable as we are just watching tv. Pray and send best wishes for lots of americas including the ones who died in the train wreck today in california, The ones who die every day in the wars we are in. Just wish peace comes quick to their souls. That's all we can do at this point. Plus next week we can send some $$ to the red cross.. 🙂
I think the ‘certain death’ is part of a warning by a meteorological agency and not directly from CNN, and i also think if im not wrong that warning was for people in Galveston and for people in areas too close to the shores.
I'm not sleeping watching and learning from a true master.

When the humans …we… can play with nature and its natural resources…..when we can destroy the natural resources of nature… gifted to us by God….then why can’t nature itself play back with us….it has its full right….pay back time….now when it has come to show its power…..no one has right to object or can’t even think of avoiding it …..people out there where it is aiming….have to face it…..
God knows whats more worst to come…..what about the people who stayed back taking a big risk….my sister is one of them…..surely when they have their souls depended on God….he would save them in return of their trust making them take the big risk….

im not sure if anyone has heard but i just saw a brief report zip across the tv screen .......that a levee had failed in new orleans.....has anyone heard any news of new orleans ?....my god what a huge hurricane. canada s best wishes and prayers are certainly with everyone in the gulf tonight

Well...i don't know exactly how is it out there,,but the way the news reporters are saying its a big massive one monstrous giant ,first time in history of America ....i am damn worried sitting here because i have my very own sister in Houston...who has planned to stay back and not evacuate.....she is living in a 2 story building and as said by the reporters will face 'certain death' by CNN....hoping the best....the bad ones will surely be punished...don't let the pearls decay with the bad stones in the water God...CNN has been very informative and accurate...i am following it...
I hope and pray for all the people affected by Ike. This being the seventh anniversary of 9/11; it seems that this has been a rough decade on our American neighbours.We in Nova Scotia have gone through many ordeals, both man made and natural, and somehow it usually brings out the best and worst in humanity. Stay safe and good luck guys. The world will be watching to see what this monster will do.

I think that McCain is being overshadowed by Palin's stardom. I guess Americans are suppose to be dazzled for a VP who is more popular than the presidential candidate. SO who's the celebrity now? The republicans are talking a good game now but if the Republicans win remember: after the rockstar show is over, things will get worse in this country.

How will the recreational boats fair in the hurricane? It’s my understanding the south Houston region is only 2nd to South Florida in registration of the number of recreation boats.
Also is isn’t this a good enough example /reason that power lines need to be buried in major populated areas like Houston, as they are in Europe, that are susceptible to hurricanes/storms….as they are saying that Houston could go 10-days with out power?
