Tuesday Buzz: hunting in Alaska

Lisa Ort
AC360° Producer

ON THE TRAIL: McCain and Palin are campaigning together starting the day in Lebanon, Ohio and finishing up in Pennsylvania.  Obama first event is in Ohio as well then he’ll make his way to Virginia.  Biden has events in Columbia and St. Louis, MO.

DIGGING DEEPER: Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been hunting since she was a little girl. How has her upbringing in a hunting community and family affected her environmental policies? Palin was against putting polar bears on the endangered species list and is in favor of the aerial hunting of wolves.  Randi Kaye is in Alaska hunting with Sarah Palin’s friend to see what she does in the wild, and speaks with a Scientist from the University of Alaska who says "A particularly worrisome aspect of the Palin candidacy is her abysmal record on the environment during her 2 years as Alaska governor."

GEORGIA HEARING: The Senate Committee on Armed Services holds a hearing on “the current situation in Georgia and implications for U.S. policy.”

DMX ANIMAL AND DRUG CHARGES: A court date is scheduled for rapper DMX, aka Earl Simmons, on animal cruelty and drug charges.

Just because you hunt does not mean that you don't care for the environment. In fact in some cases people care more for it when they do hunt because they are out in it and see how it actually is. Plus hunting is a way of helping keep down populations of deers and such. If it were not done these animals would grow out of hand and ruin the environment by how much they eat and a lot of them would starve to death from not enough food to feed them all. Hunting is not bad!

It is hilarious to see wolves running around from your gunfire. Herding them together, chasing them, and just plain messing with their heads, all while flying comfortable above, them is a true sportsman's paradise. Ahh the thrill of man vs nature. It's like playing Halo, except with a parka. Palin knows, just ask her.

    RE: Palin and the Environment.

She ignores climate change and bi-partisan calls by the Alaskan legislature to establish commitees to reduce emissions in the Arctic because it could hamper oil production. She sues the Federal government over polar bears because then she can't "drill, drill, drill!" as much as she wants to. She doesn't push Exxon Valdez to pay for that oil spill and because a major business player in Alaska. She supports all mining proposals that come her way and opposed the "Clean Water Initiative" on the Alaska ballot, ignoring all warning that these operations could really harm her consituents.

Her Cruella de Ville position on aerial shooting may be because of her upbringing (if the wolves eat the moose, she can't hunt 'em) but I'm willing to bet that her environmental mayhem is about her love affair with Big Oil and Big Money.

Thank goodness SOMEONE is digging deeper on Palin. It seems like others in the media are just content with playing stupid or blind. What about the 22 million dollars of debt Palin supposedly ran up in Alaska. Is any of that true? KEEP DIGGING!

A Governor who's has lead her state in building a NATURAL GAS pipeline demonstates a person would doesn't just talk about alternative clean energy – she gets the job started. That's true progress on solving energy and environment issues.

Interestingly ,in reading the State of Alaska website on International Commerce, I learned that Alaska exported over 4 Billion dollars in trade in 2006 and increased last year by 12% – I guess Governor PLIN DOES have some foreign affairs experience in addition to energy!

So when you start getting to know Sarah Palin and her life's story, you meant how can we frame every aspect of her life in a negative way. When will you elite media types get it. Go ahead and discover her and find the few people that don't like her nor her positions. But she has an 80% approval record, shouldn't also find maybe one or two people that like her view points?

I agree about Palin's policies regarding the polar bears and wolves. But as far as the moose goes, unless I'm wrong, it seems that she and others hunted moose strictly for food, which up in Alaska only makes sense if you want to eat during the harsh winter months.

I suggest we learn all we can about McCain and Palin before making up our minds about who we vote for in this year's election. The same goes for Obama and Biden; let's do the homework before we decide.

I want to comment on the killing of Polar Bears, no one but an Alaskan native can shoot a polar Bear a non-native person cannot even own the hide. Russia started shooting Polar Bears last year and Alaskans never did unless they were endangering humans a Polar Bear can swim from Russia to the USA-Alaska no problem they hunt on ice when they can and on land when they can't. These environmentalists make me crazy, Alaskans have been stewards of this land for centuries and all is well even after a drunk ran a tanker on the rocks and the government let them off the hook, now there was a crime. thanks

Mrs. Palin based on information so far is that she is a through and through Republican in every respect.
Religious tendencies, NRA member, Anti climate change and environment, supports big business and tax cuts for them, not for the masses of Americans, the econmy virtually in recessionand millions of 401K's in a mess. She is clearly a supporter of the Iraq war and further ties that to her religious beliefs as it is "Gods will". Presumably god spoke to "this One" so she could tell us all.
Very sincerely I hope she and her family do not have to face a son not returning home in one piece as thousands of American families have already.
All of the above as policy failed over the last 8 years, if you want more then vote McCain and Palin. Otherwise ?????
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

I love AC 360 and Anderson is one of the best unbias reporters in the world. However I am concerned that lately all 360 is about is Palin. The media has fallen in love with her and it leaves me perplexed????
Did anyone listen to her speech, she bashed, bashed and bashed some more. When will she and McCain talk about the issues? Is honesty and unbias reporting a bit too much to ask from the American press and politicians?

Palin supports the "drill, drill, drill" Republican thinking in Alaska. That state notified the US Fish and Wildlife Service that they would sue them to prevent the polar bear from being included in the endangered species list as this list could be used in blocking drilling in the Arctic. She is also in favor of construction of what has been described as "one of the world's largest mining complexes" disregarding the building location's threat to the world's largest sockeye salmon fishery at the headwaters of Bristol Bay. She opposes beluga whale protection in the Cook Inlet where development of the oil and gas industry is proposed; and, she supports an aerial shooting program to kill wolves and bears. Drill, drill, drill . . kill, kill, kill.

Anderson Cooper, thank you so much for finally doing a story on this aspect of Sarah Palin. I have been hoping and waiting for someone on CNN to report this dangerous and cruel side of Palin. She is no friend to animals and I am horrified by her support of the aerial hunting of wolves. I think when your viewers learn about this it will change a lot of opinions. She definitely has more than the one dimension 'hockey mom' image that some people see. Keep up the good work. Thanks again for this report!! The information has not been publicized on TV to viewers. I will definitely be watching tomorrow!

Regarding Palin's record on the environment as governor, I hope someone will ask her some very poignant questions about it.

We need to be careful claiming that any one person knows that it is God's will that we invade another country. What would Jesus really say and do about this?

Tell Senator McCain that he needs to stop hiding behind Governor Palin’s skirt tail and come out and discuss the issues (fight) like a real soldier (man). However, if he wishes to fight from behind her skirt tail, that says volumes about his leadership and courage.

I would really like to know why P.E.T.A. has not gone after Palin for her treatment of polar bears, aerial hunting, paying $150.00 to anyone who brought to her the left foot of a wild wolf? Oh, I forgot why they haven't, because she is a hockey mon, mayor of a small town in Alaska and she has a 17 year-old daughter who is single and pregnant, but getting married to her "Baby Daddy", and governor of Alaska. That would be sexist and they would just be picking on her like the media was doing.

Cry baby, cry baby, stuck in the Navy, McCain came home with a fake, speaking in tongues, ear marking, thinking the Iraq war was done by God, etc, etc, etc, lady!

I cannot understand why more about Palin's attitude toward and treatment of animals, lack of foreign travel, and the environment are not getting more play in the national press. People want to like her because she is attractive and well spoken. PLEASE do not let the celebrity factor affect your common sense. Research her record independent of the press coverage and then make an educated decision about your vote. Just because people have kids, does not mean they have great family values. Just because they are attractive physically and well spoken, does not mean they are educated. Just because they go to church, does not mean they are kind and empathetic toward people not like them and God's creatures.

Why are you and others in the news media letting Sen. McCain dictate when, how, where and with whom Gov. Palin will be interviewed. We the public depend on news people to report the news. I'm outraged and have never seen anything like this before!!!!

My jury is still out as far as Palin is concerned (though I know we need Senator Obama's GENUINE fresh insight and I know I am voting for him). I think the future polls will reflect the upcoming debates. I hope my countrymen will take this opportunity to expand their horizons. I keep seeing the ugly head of ignorance sadly so well spread. I hold hope that news American seeds will get a chance to be planted so we can all have a better future that can be harvested for many years.

Cooper, would it have been so difficult to look at the dog with the cigar that was talking to you? 🙂

Could you please let us know more about how these polls are done – how many people are questioned. What questions were asked

For all we know they may have asked this question from 2 people – giving 50% / 50%

How can anyone think of voting for McCain and Palin. People say she has appeal to the walmart mom, but if they are elected they will become welfare moms. They will do nothing for the economy but ruin it. We need to get rid of the old and bring in the fresh and the new. She is a blue light special and will fade with the special. They are no good for this country and we will have 12 years of horror. We need Obama, change all the way.

The London Telegraph had a story online about Palin today and made the statement that if Bush's environmental policies were dismal that Palin's were toxic. From the research I have done on her and her environmental stands I think that was an understatement.

The National Wildlife Defense has video of Palin advocating hunting wolves and bears from airplanes, even offering $150 bounty on every left front foreleg of wolves killed. This is hunting? My husband is Haida (Alaska Native Indian) who believes hunting was necessary at one time in Alaska, but you kill only what you are going to eat, out of necessity.
