Paying $14 million for baby photos. That’s newsworthy. Telling the story on television without showing those photos. That’s tricky. My challenge was to report on the first public images of the Brangelina twins, but I could not show the pictures - I had to show the magazine cover, and I couldn't find one!
Fortunately there's lots to talk about here: celebrities selling photos of their newborns to further their own fame and/or make make lots of money. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are giving the money to charity. But they're not the only stars showing off their babies for cash, and many keep the proceeds.
Even veteran paparazzo Darryn Lyons isn't completely comfortable with this celebrity trend. He says Hollywood stars are "manipulating" their own children. But then he also wishes his own picture agency played a part in the Brangelina deal. His prediction is $14 million won't remain the record price for very long.
You know the market for this stuff is strong when even the siblings of celebrities can cash in. Britney's little sister Jamie Lynn Spears reportedly made a million dollars by posing with her daughter Maddie. My cameraman told me he thinks that makes the Brangelina deal sound almost reasonable.
Anderson Cooper goes beyond the headlines to tell stories from many points of view, so you can make up your own mind about the news. Tune in weeknights at 8 and 10 ET on CNN.
