    Dear Mr. Gergen,

Why do you say "both" candidates need to take the high road. I feel Obama has consistently done so. You are being unfair to Obama to group them together. Just my opinion.

John McCain is coming across like a child in a temper tamdrum because he does not get what he wants. He's just a grumpy old man.

I think this whole off shore drilling thing is a farce...we haven't even drilled in some of the areas that have already been designated for drilling...why don't we try that first?

Hello everyone - thanks for your follow-up comments, especially the way you are urging both candidates to take (find?) the high road. To Mike from Syracuse: we are supposed to have three presidential and one vice presidential debate, all starting in September and running into mid-October. I haven't yet seen an official confirmation that they will take place but folks in both campaigns are assuring that they will. They could be pivotal - and a great place for both of them to tell us in more detail how they would tackle the huge issues ahead of us.

@ Gary, good point about the night Hilary is speaking and how that is an indicator that she will not be VP. The buzz about her being VP and the so called dream ticket seems like it was ages ago. It is a shame as I have heard several people say they will only vote for Obama if Hilary is on the ticket. Although this was awhile back, I wonder what they will do come Nov.

I agree with an earlier comment that just talking about drilling off shore has helped bring gas price down and if it is approved it will continue to do so. Also according to expert oil people the lead time from offshore drilling to the gas pump is about 2 years.

Megan Dresslar... Senator Stevens has not been founf guilty of anything yet. He was just indicted yesterday. He will go to trial and founf innocent or guilty. Until such time as a verdict is rendered he is presumed to be innocent.

I'm not sure about the off shore drilling that Senator McCain is coming out in support of but am glad that he has stopped pushing the tax holiday because it would have taken money from infrastructure.

Oh sure, we are definitely NOT ready for a major earthquake (here in Los Angeles). I was here during the Northridge Quake and things went pretty well, unfortunately times, infrastructure and the money is no longer here. We are in trouble ... good luck and TAKE COVER!

I would like to know why the Republicans in Congress just prevented the Oil Speculation bill to fail. If they are so concerned about energy, you would think they would support every measure. They only support the ones that benefit the Oil Companies. The oil companies are their biggest donors and the special interest they have to worry about and not the American People.

The commercial McCain is running shows hardly shows a desire for change. Let's face it Obama's personality outshines Mccain. Why is it such a bad thing to have a very intelligent, articulate man running for office ? He is a good speaker. I find it a refreshing change. Our current President can't put a complete sentence together.

Earthquakes are scary. We had a little jolt here in the Midwest and it is a wake up call. I now have EQ insurance on my house which I thought I had but didn't. Due to the house's age was not as simple as getting an ins rider, had to get a total seperate policy.

    David,
I think we ALL need to try to take the high road...the candidates, their supporters, the media...the issues are way to serious for this nonsense.

David Gergen-thanks for coming onto the blog. This ad is one of many McCain has run or is running. Personally I don't mind contrast ads. The problem with all the ones I've seen from McCain so far is they are factually in-correct.

That smacks of desperation to me. I think the McCain camp is looking at different polls than the rest of us and don't like what they see.

    Mr Gergen: Love your commmentaries!
I would like to hear your thoughts on Senator Obama's meeting with the economic team this week. Do you think he's meeting with the right group of people? I think it shows that even if he doesn't have alot of experience, he is willing to pull together people from all walks of life to give and receive ideas and solutions.

Wow that was so scary one big earthquake!!!!!

    July 30, 2008 at 10:43 pm |
  32. CaseyJPS

OK 360. I really have to object to the use of very old earthquake shots as a lead in on yesterdays quake. People are viewing these pictures out of context. This kind of reporting does HUGE damage to our tourism industry, and ultimately our California economy (jobs, etc.). This is really irresponsible.

Beautiful pictures of Alaska in Joe Johns report about Ted Stevens. I noticed this in his report about Sen. Stevens last night, too.

David G., that is what is so sad about Senator McCain – he said at the beginning that he would not run a negative campagin but it seems now that is all he is doing. All he is doing is sullying his reputation

Why did we wait until July of 2008 to remove the Executive Ban on offshore drilling? Did politics come into play in front of the elections?

How about releasing some of the strategic reserve... that would be a good strategery.

I like Ted Stevens and I think most of this stuff is lies. Overall earmarks are less than 1% of the budget. Earmarks are one of the few good things the Congress and Senate does.

The Stevens story is a compelling argument for term limits. Congress has an approval rating that is barely out of single digits. This Congress, with few exceptions, is a disgrace.
