Anderson Cooper

Hey everyone...

Drum roll please…

After months of top-level meetings with pie charts, turkey wraps and consultants using internet phrases I never knew existed, today we are happy to announce we have re-designed the 360° page.

I've given it a few test runs and it seems very user friendly. My mom still can’t figure it out, but I think just about everyone else will find the new design much better. I invite you to check it out. Look at it. Touch it. Smell it. Whatever.

We got rid of that blue background that used to fill the screen. (Cyber Consultants say blue "pops". I always thought “popping” was a good thing, but what do I know?)

One of the biggest improvements is with our blogs. Before the redesign, it could be tough trying to find the blog you were interested in reading. Now, we've streamlined the categories, and organized the posts according to topic and blogger. If you're interested in reading up on a Keeping Them Honest entry, scroll to that headline and click on the link.

Yes, it's that easy! (I know, I’ve been watching too many infomercials for miracle cleaners.)

Crowd pleasers like The Shot and Beat 360° are on the right and much more visible.

We've also added a ton of video from the show, our correspondents and beyond.

As always, send us your feedback. Let me know what you think.
Here's a guide from our digital producer David Reisner:

See you on 360°...

David M. Reisner
360° Digital Producer

We promised you more interactivity since we last updated the blog – and this year has seen some great new additions; the 360° webcam, our nightly 'live blog', Beat 360°, Behind-the-Scenes Vlogs and more… We'll we're at it again! So let’s see what’s under the hood, shall we?

New Link____________________________________________________________________
First cool bit of news: We've shortened the URL for the site...AC360.com – yep, that’s all... AC360.com. Tell your friends, tell your family (yes even grandma). This will be your one-stop shopping for all things 360°; both the homepage and the blog. CNN.com/360 and CNN.com/360blog will still get you there too.... but we wanted to be a friend and save you 2-6 keystrokes. Your fingers will thank you.

New Layout__________________________________________________________________

We heard you guys loud and clear and we've made our homepage content easier to read, see, and navigate. But before we get you behind the wheel, I wanted to let you know where everything is on the page... let me give you the grand tour from top to bottom! ...no, literally

At the very top you see 3 tabs:

  • MAIN: That's the homepage – here you'll find all the stuff you loved from the original site, with added navigational features with a selection of show topics larger than before.
  • BLOG: Where you can find all the latest blogs, comments, and posts.
  • VIDEO: This will take you to CNN’s extensive online library of video clips about politics, entertainment, weather, the world, and more.

News Flipper_________________________________________________________________
Below the tabs you'll see something we like to call ‘the news flipper’. It’s a really cool module that shows you the latest headlines from CNN.com. Scroll through a ton of stories, land on the one that interests you, and click the headline for more info.

"From the Blog"_______________________________________________________________
Next up we have our section on the blog we call "From the blog". This will be home to all the most recent blogs. You will often see one blog featured at the top – something we really feel you should check out. It can be anything from the latest insight from David Gergen to Anderson blogging from the field.

In the left column of “From the Blog” you’ll find all the most recent blog posts. As a new blog is posted – boom! You’ll know instantly. We give you a few lines previewing the blog allowing you to see more posts than before

The second column of “From the Blogs” is organized by the themes we live by at 360°: Raw Politics, Keeping Them Honest, Crime & Punishment. And we’ve added new categories to cover themes that are popular on the blog:

  • 360° Radar:
Stories… well, on our radar! It’s things coming your way that you should know.
  • Erica's News Note:
We love Erica just as much as you do, and it’s time she got a great spot on the blog. Here you can read about stories she’s following, reports you may have missed, updates on past coverage and anecdotes to share.
  • Behind the Scenes:
Sometimes getting the story is just as engaging as covering it. 360° is particularly proud of the behind the scenes reporting posted on the blog, giving you an inside look at the day’s developments. We've got a lot more behind-the-scenes stuff in-the-works, but something we're starting soon is "TV Talk" where we blog about phrases we use in the newsroom, and more importantly, what they mean.
  • The Buzz:
This is where you’ll find a heaping plate of Morning Buzz: For when its time to get up and get insight – we'll also bring you the latest news in the afternoon with Afternoon Buzz.

At the bottom of row two you’ll find a list of blog contributors and categories. Click on any one of the reporters or topics that interest you and receive a customized blog devoted to only posts from that person, or posts only on that subject.

Ok, one more time everybody ... back to the top!
The third column of the homepage will be the new home for all the daily segments you watch.

  • Tonight’s Show:
What to expect on the next edition of 360° at 10p ET.
  • Beat 360°:
Same fun caption contest – but new layout. Now you’ll be able to see today’s contest and yesterday’s contest! Stay tuned for more interactivity here – but click on the day of the week – and you'll be able to play along – just like the good old (yester)days... You can also click the link below Beat 360° to get a customized blog of only BEAT 360° blogs. Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!!
  • Planet In Peril:
With Anderson and the team just getting back from Africa – check here for the latest blogs, vlogs, and pictures from the trip.
  • AC360° Daily Podcast
You can get the award-winning Anderson Cooper 360° Daily Podcast two ways – watch it here on CNN.com, or subscribe and download from iTunes
  • The Shot
Look no further for one of our favorite features. Watch previous clips of video crazy enough to be crowned ‘The Shot”

…So there you have it! We've got a lot more great features in store, but we were just too excited to hold this back any longer. You guys have really been great embracing and evolving the blog… So let’s keep the dialogue going and let the blogs begin!

Thanks for your intro blog for the Blog.

I liked the blue color (thought it was for You.), but the new is fine.

And, yes, where is the instant feedback button??

Your mom is a pretty smart lady, judging from her books. Maybe you need to explain it better, or like me & my son, she is using this as an excuse to see you. At any rate, she will get it.

Thanks for all the info & hard work to keep us better informed.
Glad you are back from Africa–you look great!

    Hey Anderson,

I'm a creature of habit with this new webpage. Normally I have liked all the new changes but this one takes some getting used to. It's so busy – so much – in every direction – which do I read first kind of page? I can see how your mom is still learning how to get thru it all. I'll get used to it.

I'm impressed with what you guys are doing over in Africa. And the diseases – the flesh eating one – and monkey pox – awesome – amazing – a trajedy – but wow! I hope they never come here to America.

    See you tonight.

Anderson, is there a limit to how many suggestions one can make here?

Why don't you get your own section for your blog like Erica?

This is amazing, fantastic......... and it smells, feels and tastes like the BEST news program in tv...period.

PS: You are too cute! Just saying. Thanks for making me laugh on a day that I needed more than you will ever know. My BFF is moving back to Cali and I am super sad. Thanks Anderson! I owe you one!

Sorry, I wasn't dissing the new look of the cover page, I think it's really cool and easy to navigate, I just wish that the PIP link would be on the blog page as you give us blogs from that section on the blog page so it's related. Hey Anderson your mom's peeps need to fix the links on her page because I think only one works and that's the corporate link, unless of course that's the only link she want's to work then cool, just thought I'd heads up.

I loved the blue background. Now it just seems plain to me but that is just my opinion however now I can leave it on the screen at work all day.

It shall be something to get use too. Also I love how many other the other CNN pages have quick vote polls. I like to vote for things.

mmmmm PIE charts & TURKEY wraps! yum...lol

The cover page is all well and good but to be honest, I think I spend more time on the blog page than I do on the AC360 cover page. I just wish there was a link in the 'Related' section of the blog page to 'Planet in Peril'.

Hi! Your new website is great. I love the color blue, but the change to a very light background is refreshing. The page isn't difficult to figure out–and I like that you've kept the helpful content from other designs–where to find transcripts, daily podcasts, etc. (Tell your mom I still own a VCR too.) The blogs add a lot to your program–I like that you've organized them by topic and individually. I look forward to your program!

I like the format. It's the best makeover yet. The font size for blog entries on the main page is a bit small for those of us who hit 40 and are starting the squinty need bifocals not going there yet phase. It did take a look or two to figure out navigating the new layout, though, because it's different. It is also more user friendly. Nice job!! Now when it can make dinner, clean the house, and walk the dog, then you're talking ultimate impressive!!!

    Hi Anderson, and 360,
I must admit, just reading the instructions on how to use the "new blog" confused me. Change we can believe in? Hopefully, my little bird brain will kick into gear. Unfortunately, by the time I "get it' and the light dawns on me, it will change again. User friendly? Maybe. But from someone who has trouble programming a wrist watch, it will be a challenge. Not a walk in the park challenge, but an interesting one.

    Hey Anderson

One more question, Where is the link for the email directly to the show the instant feedback?
Also please blog more I enjoy reading yourdaily thoughts and your witty sense of humour! Tell your Mom to hang in there, your her best teacher!

    June 19, 2008 at 2:31 pm |
  14. Renee

    Here's the feedback.....................

    1. The size of the font is very, very small. The black background is hard on the eyes on any site. Put me down for a blue background. It is a lot less depressing too. If you watch enough HGTV, the pop is supposed to be good.

    2. Instant feedback button is gone. Guess the viewers sent too much feedback or you were tired of hearing it all from the Obama, Clinton and McCain groupies.

    3. Why not photos of Erica, Gary, Randy and the 360 regular correspondents at the top of the page? What about a new photo at the top of the page with the entire gang? Most of us are smart enough to know it takes a village to produce the quality programs you offer.

Other than that it looks great!

This is really organized and easy to go to the articles I am interested in.

I'm waiting for even more excitement from your show and site. One of the problem I have is that I don't have an access to "the 360° webcam." Is this only my problem or is this because I am an international viewer? Is there any way I can watch it?

Hey Anderson I just was wondering what does the from the blog mean does that inclufde the live blogging from the anchor desk coments or iis under a different category,I can't see the link for that please tell me where it is thanks .

Hmm – I like to log in from time to time and read whatever is the latest post on the blog. But now I am not sure which blog is the latest.
Is there a way I can figure out where there has been a new post?
So lets say if I want to read Erica's blog – do I have to click on "Erika's News Note" each time to see if there is a new one?
    I miss the chronological sequencing...

  18. chipmunk

A positive note: I just have to click on AC(contributor section) to read his blogs. I don't know if this was easily available on the previous layout. But you forgot to add "Anderson's View" as a separate cluster. Come on our anchor cannot be that cyber shy!
Anderson's View, Anderson's view, voting for Anderson's view on the new website! Without that- its just plain and dull.

WOW! You guys did change it up alot. At first glance it looks good, but i didn't mind the blue. I check your site daily for my dose of news for the day, and it looks like you have more info on the main page. Give us a week & we will let you know more, but I think it was very well done. Also, I love reading the blog. I seldom leave a comment but I ready it daily too. It is great to be able to connect with others on thier thoughts & ideas.

    June 19, 2008 at 1:01 pm |
  22. Missy

Hey, again, Anderson. The reason I was asking about the feedback section is that I saw Mary the first commentor, as well as many others, like to submit feedback to to 360 about the new blog as well as other comments, I am sure.

Unless you and 360 no longer want feedback from the viewers. Thanks.

    Have a great day!

    Uh, turkey wraps?

Ok, I've spent a few minutes looking, touching and smelling the new blog and I love it–I'm especially happy to see the return of the "Behind the Scenes" feature–it was always interesting to read about the chaos, drama, close calls and hard work that it takes to get 360 on the air. I'm already loving the "news flipper" and the layout with the tabs (all of us Firefox users really LOVE our tabs).

And Anderson, tell your mom to hang in there–she'll most likely enjoy the changes once she gets used to them.

Having designed my own webpages I give this new on a thumbs up. White space is easier on the eyes and makes for easier reading. One question will the RSS feeds work right away? The last time the blog was changed it took awhile for it to kick in.

I don't know, Anderson... Your mom is a pretty smart woman. Maybe it is just an excuse. If she can't figure it out, you need to spend more real time with her instead of virtual time. Sounds like a ploy. (I am a mom, and I use ploys all the time with my sons, but they are 11 and 7.) Well, anyway, looks great, sounds great. Good luck with the launch.

    Anderson ,
the site looks nice, but the older one was more individual. I knew right away I am in 360, loved the blue color......, nav is better, but I miss the custom look for you only 😉

p.s. I love to watch 360, especially the planet in peril is very good, everyone should see it. Like your neutral ways of reporting.
    thank you for great work

Anderson and AC360 team: Appreciate the rigor you are putting to the show's website. So far, I'm finding the new layout very easy to follow. Love the "tabs" up at the top too.

My feedback at this time is on the blog and regarding long blog entries. You only show a few paragraphs of the story and then show a link "Keep Reading". Once you click that, I seem to end up re-reading the beginning because I can't remember where I stopped. Is there any way the "Keep Reading" link can be put before the start of the post? It could say "Read entire post" or something of that nature. Anyways, I would then click that before I started to read and it would be less cumbersome.

Also, where's the link to send an email directly to the show? Thanks.

  35. Delphine, Paris, France

That's cool! Smells like CNN spirit: clear, going right to the facts... I love the News Flipper! And I'm sure the Behind-the-scenes Vlogs are going to be a hit!

Anderson, you are right: "popping" is most of the time a good thing (not the pop-up ads!). And the blue was relaxing for the eyes... And like a friend always says "you can't be wrong with blue". Oh wait... She was probably talking about a shirt...

It could be fun to have some examples of the "internet phrases" your cyberconsultants did use. What did they tell you for the white background? White is the new vintage cyber color, bringing you back to the "basic"? White is "essential"? Or just suggest you the Arctic landscapes and the race against Global Warming?

That's a great job and I'm sure we are all going to enjoy this new AC360.com !

Oh, a last thing: if one day we could have the podcast in a very fast pop-up blue-framed window, on the right – or on the left, if you prefer -, without the need to dowload it... just one click and... A popping podcast! (Note to the moderator: I'm just kidding and I stop there! )

Thanks to the AC360 team for your hard work !

I'll admit, as much as I love you all at AC360, the website was a bit dreary, but I'm loving this revamped one!

Thanks a bunch, guys, for working on this. It's positively marvelous. Keep up the great work.

Yeah I think that we all noticed that you all were playing around with the blog. I do like it a lot better. Like you said it is a lot easier to use and easier to find stuff. Hopefully you all got the kinks out cause it's been doing some crazy things here lately! But you could have used a different pic of yourself...I mean maybe one in a suit this time! LOL

As far as your mom goes...well she'll get the hang of it soon. Honestly I am very surprised that she even gets on the net! Most people her age don't!! KUDOS to her for trying new things!
