If I were in Cindy McCain's shoes with my own set of issues – I would keep my mouth closed about Michelle Obama.

Julliet I agree with you. Take the money and do something that actually benefit the people.

I am horrified at the amount of money wasted in these elections when people are loosing their homes, jobs and are finding it difficult to eat daily.

If Obama is that great of a candidate why does he need all of that extra money to beat one old guy?

I am wondering about the people in hospitals and nursing homes, what happens to them with all this flooding? Are they relocated?

  6. MaryBeth

Mike: I'm not apologizing for him, I'm just asking a question. I thought the pledge was mostly about not taking private money...just public and who cares where it comes from?

I don't really care if he changed his mind on this. I don't think it has anything to do with Obama's ability to govern the country. If he or McCain take money from the fund it's open to them and it's their own choice.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:29 pm |
  8. Jo Ann, Ohio

Debra – Las Vegas, With all of the money Obama is pulling in of course he would choose the least traceable option.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:29 pm |
  9. Tracey - Boston

If Obama doesn't want to take public money – that's better for us and our money? Right?

So Obama and mccain have to use the same amount of money for the same election ..... ???

    June 19, 2008 at 10:29 pm |
  10. Stacy

McCain is calling Obama a flip flopper? That's ironic. McCain has been flip flopping left and right.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:29 pm |
  11. Lynne in Atlanta

Go Obama! Staying away from those funds is one way to begin the change we are searching for!

    June 19, 2008 at 10:29 pm |
  12. Shannon

I think it is ironic that McCain of everyone would call Obama a flip flopper!!

    June 19, 2008 at 10:28 pm |
  13. Cynthia

McCain may not be raising as much money as Obama but he not only has the RNC, the 527's and PACS. Senator Obama would be crazy to limit himself. If McCain's everyday supporters were donating as Obama's are we would not even be talking about this.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:28 pm |
  14. Michelle in Los Angeles

Of course the underdog cries fowl. McCain got breaks by using his wife's private jet. The people want to contribute to Obama. The people want change, want him, and trust him to do what is best to make their wishes come true. His supporters will not be bothered.

    Go Obama, go!

This darn campaign is awfully long.

  15. Mechelle-- Oklahoma

why do we even give candidates public finanace? it should go somewhere else like the infrustructure!

    June 19, 2008 at 10:28 pm |
  16. Julliet

I totally agree with you Shannon.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  17. Mike, Syracuse, NY

MaryBeth, Obama didn't have to make the promise in the first place. He lied pure and simple. Don't make apologies for him.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  18. Christopher

McCain is also taking public financing because his camp would be constantly embarrassed by the media continuously comparing the massive amounts raised by Obama to the much smaller amounts raised by McCain.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  19. Billi

Of course Obama wouldn't limit himself, as Candy said, but this is a question of keeping your word and a matter of trust. It is important to know that your candidate keeps his/her word – on small things or on big things.

Isn’t that the definition of a politician? –>Flip Flop

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  21. Greg Erie PA

Obama seduces the poor to give money. Will he give back in return?

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  22. MaryBeth

Isn't that pledge mostly about not accepting money from lobbyists? Or other private money? His campaign will still be publicly financed....it will be the public that finances his campaign.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  23. Jo Ann, Ohio

I guess this is the "new type of politics" Obama promised everybody. It's change alright, back to the way they used to do it in the old days. Frankly, it was just a matter of time before Obama started to renege on his promises.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:27 pm |
  24. Hannah Storm

If you don't have to use the federal funding what is the big deal in not using it. If Obama can use the money people are donating then why not

    BTW – love Candy's "duh" 😛

    June 19, 2008 at 10:26 pm |
  25. Gary

Shannon: Candy just said Obama flipped.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:26 pm |
  26. Debra - Las Vegas

Obama just another politician. Say one thing, do another.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:26 pm |
  27. Mike, Syracuse, NY

Obama has just shown that principle takes second place to personal benefit.

Anderson, I have no clue who is responsible for maintaining levee's, but they certainly are negligent. I hope you keep the spotlight on this story so the states or the government makes the changes necessary to prevent this kind of tragedy in the future.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:26 pm |
  29. Julliet

The country could actually use the public finance for say roads or bridges instead of giving it to the politicians.

Hi Randi!! If Israel is alive, he now has nowhere to hide, especially since he now has AC360 viewers looking for him!

    June 19, 2008 at 10:25 pm |
  31. MaryBeth

LOL! Go Candy! "duh" indeed! Why limit yourself to a paltry $85M?

    June 19, 2008 at 10:25 pm |
  32. Cindy

So Obama is flip flopping again! What does he think...that he needs way more money to beat McCain?

    June 19, 2008 at 10:25 pm |
  33. Mike, Syracuse, NY

Usually politicians wait until they are elected to break promises. This must be the 'change' Obama talks about.

Gen AC–Cool! Finally a peer group I like!

    June 19, 2008 at 10:24 pm |
  35. Frank

What does it mean when a candidate gives his word to do something? They're 'just words'. When the candidate breaks his word what does that say about him? I don't think 'real change' describes it.

Gaby it is so great that someone so young is interested in news. Always keep that interest 🙂

    June 19, 2008 at 10:24 pm |

Nibor, I guess he didn't want to go to jail. There actually was another guy, can't remember his name, who was about to go to jail for the same thing and did commit suicide.

Tracey – Boston, It just seems like they wait until these important parts of the infrastructure break down completely before they fix them. Don't they inspect them periodically? The same thing happened to the bridges as I recall.

It is tragic to see the impact on people and pets. However, I would like to see some coverage on what short-term and long-term impact this will have on the area's ecosystem including the wildlife in the areas hardest hit.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
  42. Shannon

Gary, Obama agreed to this before John McCain started running his G.E. campaign in February using Primary funds. McCain has opted in and out and now he is back in again.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
  43. Julliet

Did McCain also flip flop on the campaign financing issue?

    June 19, 2008 at 10:23 pm |
  44. MaryBeth

Gaby: it's nice knowing a young person is interested in what's going on in the world. Wish there were more like you!

  45. Renee

Randi, you forgot to mention armed and dangerous and LOTS of cash to pay for that RV's gas.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  46. Mary H. St. Louis, MO

Ok, I hope they catch this guy. Well maybe he will have to spend all the money he got inappropriately to fill up that RV. That could be a start to his punihsment.

There was a 6th foot but they discovered it was a fake. It was really an animal foot shoved into a shoe.

    June 19, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  48. Billi

By refusing public finance, there is no doubt that Obama is breaking a promise. He said he would accept public finance if the Republican candidate would agree to do so. Well, the Republican candidate is agreeable. How could this be anything but a flip-flop from Obama?

    June 19, 2008 at 10:21 pm |

Hi Randi Kaye! Glad you are blogging. Looking forward to the feet on the beach mystery report.
