Obama: Just because he says it doesn't make it so

Leslie Sanchez
GOP Strategist and CNN Political Contributor

Sen. Barack Obama, according to a source, has commenced his search for a running mate, which just made things worse for the Democrats – not better. There may be some political benefit to the move - but it is almost certainly a double-edged sword. Rather than help to unify the party behind him, it pushes it toward an almost certain breach.

The news came just hours after Republican John McCain's campaign revealed he would be spending the Memorial Day weekend at his ranch in the company of three potential ticket mates: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

By making his own budding search for a vice president public, Obama has matched McCain in the news cycle, potentially making him seem just as presidential as the Arizona Republican. The problem is that McCain has his nomination sewn up; Obama is still in mid-battle with Hillary Clinton. And, as she will no doubt now acknowledge, nothing in politics is inevitable.

Having won the nomination outright – it's all over but the convention – McCain has the luxury of being able to campaign like an incumbent. He can take his time, appear deliberative and concentrate his efforts on assembling a team that will carry him through to victory.

Obama has no such luxury. Any concerns he may have about presenting a balanced ticket to the American people must also be weighed against the idea that it will help him or hurt him at the Democrats' nominating convention in Denver.

The early talk of a running mate selection team, at this stage of the game, seems to foreclose any chance of a "dream ticket." And so the delegates in Denver will have one more thing to consider while on the convention floor, trying to determine their best option for defeating McCain.

And, of the party leaders who control the delegations that make up the convention, only one is likely to have been selected by Obama to be on the ticket. Which means the rest of them still have a chance to be thrust into the national spotlight by cutting a deal with the Clinton faction. Which, in turn, means Obama would have fewer allies as he works to seal the deal with delegates.

As they say, one step forward, two steps back.

Absolutely...............Here in Illinois we are tired of watching this crap. Hillary cannot run in 2012 if Obama is elected because we will love him in office. If they were to put McCain in there he might drop dead by 2012. Or, she could run on the same platform she used this year. It is all about Hillary. She doesn't care about this country. She cares about herself..............ego, ego, ego, sickening.

Spoken like a true "old way of doing politics" person. When you talk of "favors" and b.s. like that, I am glad Obama is running...................... for CHANGE.

Is isn't hard to notice your disdain for Obama. You reply to these blogs on a daily basis. Obama has had to counter everything other people do in this ridiculous election process to thwart off media spin that he isn't doing enough. It will be interesting to see what you and other Obama opponents have to say when he sits down at his desk in the Oval office in January.

This Leslie Sanchez is classic. A republican strategist trying to manufacture problems within the democratic party with another non-story. The sad part is Clinton supporters are stupid enough to buy into this and blog in protest. If you're ignorant enough to buy into stories like this a day after McCain had to reject an endorsement from Rev. Hagee, a man he desperately saught out but was not intelligent enough to do his homework and realize he has given God credit for attacking homosexuals with Hurricane Katrina, said Hitler's holocaust was part of God's plan in the book of Jeremiah, and called the Catholic church the "Great whore", then by all means support McCain. If you're ignorant enough to allow this 'surge' to continue to "work" for another four years while thousands of more American troops die providing a free police force for Iraq while we spend 10 Billion a month and further destroy our economy, then by all means vote for McCain. If you believe in continuing George Bush's tax cuts that have contributed to the decline of our economy while widening the gap between the lower and middle class, then by all means vote for McCain. If you agree with George Bush's statement that dialogue with nations that pose a threat to our future security is "appeasement" and wish to further isolate our country from our allies and enemies, then by all means vote for McCain.
To Clinton supporters I will say this: If you're willing to gamble on this country's future because you're too blind to see the desperation and divisive nature of your candidate, then by all means vote for McCain. I'm sick and tired of hearing the childish complaints from you and your candidate. Continue to support a woman who is willing to divide her party and risk the white house because her ego will not allow her to concede she has been mathmatically eliminated from the nomination. Her attempts to incite anger and make threats that Florida and Michigan will vote for McCain if she does not get those delegates are pathetic and shameless. She had no problem agreeing to the rules before those states were her last and desperate attempt to steal away a nomination she has lost.

Michelle Obama is controlling the game; she will not allow Hillary, another strong woman, to become the second strong woman in her husband's inner circle; Barack is a follower while Michelle is a leader; she was his boss at the law firm, he followed her to her church, he followed her to Rev. Wright and now he is following her lead in the campaign; Barack needs to channel his inner Vince Lombardi rather than his all too common inner Tony Dungy; I beieve he should beat McCain to Joe Lieberman; in a national election, Obama is viewed as far left; Lieberman, a Democrat regardless of his Independent status, will bring him to the center; it will get Jewish votes, independents and maybe some Reagan Democrats; McCain should reach across the aisle and grab Lieberman too; he can solidify the middle and get some Democrats that were pulling for Hillary; McCain's weekend meeting may be a smoke signal for his Lieberman agenda.

Obama is not in a battle with Hillary. Hillary is using this opportunity and your funding to introduce Chelsea on the campaign trail for their own self serving political dynasty. If peoople can't see that, they are blind and Hillary isn't deservant of a V.P. position. Let Hillary, Bill and Chelsea pay their $20 million dollar debt.

I must say this to all of those who keep complaining about the fact the intelligent, concerned and TRUE democrats keep questioning Sen. Obama's relationships. If I am applying for the job of Nanny for your children, it would not be important to you to know I am associated with THUGS, Racists, Killers and Hate mongers? That would not be a concern for you? Well here is some important information for those of you who think we need to sweep his past under the carpet. When I say PAST I mean last month. This man is running to be PRESIDENT of the greatest place in the world. You say it is not important that he associates and/ or associated with Rev. Wright amongst others. That is pretty important information. I want to know who the guy, that may be have the most important job on earth, is "hanging out with" That is important to know. He was brainwashed for 20 years by Rev. Wright that the blacks need to rise up from the white mans opression. Or was this a front for his true religion? He mentioned in a speech he has visited 57 states, the only place I found that has 57 states, is referenced in the Muslim religion. Could the reason he is ignoring the Rev. Wright because it was a front. Conspirace theory? perhaps. He has too many issues to have the top dog job. Sorry. Perhaps we all need to get to know this man better, before he hand over our country to him.

Hillary through different ststements has already made it O.K to vote for McCain. Believe her supporters when they tell you they will vote for McCain. Americans Vote against there Economic intrest all the time. This election will be no different. eventhough I have'nt heard McCain talk about what he would do for Poor people one time during this whole election. if your poor or close to it, why in hell would you vote for McCain. that would be so counterproductive to your personal advancement, and struggle. white, brown, or black.

This is unbeliveable. The problem with Obama is he has a chip on his shoulder. He is going to make it and he is ruining this country in the mean time. I hear the Obama supporters claim Sen. Clinton won't give up, the Kitchen sink, she is ruining the party. Here is a REAL news flash. Obama has divided the country. There is now a black America and a White America. The "educated" folks are voting for the snot nosed KID. Thats right KID. He does not have enough experience. He reminds me of myself as a teenager....I thought I was untouchable...that would never happen to me....Sen. Obama has that I can do what ever I want attitude. He is becomming more like Pres. Bush in his manhandeling of everything he does. He Lied to the Jewish community last night. If you are truly a Jew, you cannot vote for Obama. He will negotiate with your sworn ememies. What are you people thinking? America does not negotiate with Terrorist. If you give the Terrorist the meetings with OUR President, that lets them know he has brought them up to a level of Importance. Sorry, he is not a leader...a Great speaker and teleprompter reader, but not a leader as it is defined in Websters dictionary.
