Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 4/15/08

Tonight, we start in Eldorado with new details from inside the reclusive polygamist compound. Hundreds of children are in state custody and their mothers say they’re being persecuted for practicing an unpopular religion. We also have new pictures taken by members of the sect that show authorities entering the compound in armored personnel carriers and carrying automatic weapons.

The Pope landed at Andrews Air Force Base this afternoon where he was greeted personally by President Bush. It's the first time ever an American president has traveled out to Andrews to welcome a foreign leader and it's the first papal visit since the sex abuse scandal exploded. Find out what the Pope said about that.

We’ll have an up close look at Sen. Barack Obama and who he is and how he became that person. This is the first in a series of in depth pieces on all three candidates.

Finally, Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker and his battle with mental illness. The NFL superstar says he doesn't even remember winning the Heisman trophy because he was too busy struggling with a mental disorder. It’s called dissociative identity disorder and Dr. Sanjay Gupta will have all the details.

And be sure to check out our new live web camera from the 360° studio. The shot features a behind the scenes look at the set. We’ll turn the camera on at 945p ET and turn it off at 11p ET. LINK TO THE BLOG CAMERA

We’ll start posting comments to this blog at 10p ET and stop at 11p ET.

I will be quite surprised ( probably shocked ) if the profiles of McCain and Clinton are "puff pieces" like Obama's was

"Btw, how do they find out if someone has multiple personality disorder?"

I think one of the symptoms is that the person starts losing time, blacking out – not remembering how they ended up where they are right now.

I am a little skeptical about what I'm hearing from the sect women – it seems like the women are being pushed to the forefront to speak about this, while the men most likely tell them what to say. I am suspicious the women could be enablers of the abuse.

Just look at what happened in the cult – "children of god" – love, religion, and brainwashed mothers have enabled children to be abused before and this is a situation where the state does need to step in, investigate, and find out what's truly going on behind closed doors at the compound.

Wonderful piece Anderson. It shows the true measure of a man. Hopefully people will see where he came from to where he is today and have a better understanding of him. Thanks.

It's got to be hard to live with a person who has multiple personalities, especially when they want to kill themselves. Very interesting report. Just goes to show how powerful the mind can be.

Kristin and Katie.....think carefully about who can win against a Republican before you make a final decision about your Democratic choice. Kerry was ahead in the polls at first and you know how that turned out. Nice guys don't always win.

I wonder if it is possible for someone with multiple personality disorder to feel at home and at ease with all his or her personalities or if it keeps being confusing for them as well

  27. Tammy

Going to throw this out (and maybe get slammed in return-who knows?)-isn't it a bit late to put all the facts out about the three candidates after the candidates have done enough damage to each other and various media outlets have done enough damage ripping these three apart so that the American people will never believe anything again about these people without the proverbial grain of salt? I'm at a point where every story has a spin to it when I hear it concerning these candidates. Nothing personal against the reporters, but I just watch some shows where the agendas are pretty obvious. Not so much here but wouldn't this have been better before the blood letting started?

    Hi Anderson,
I am enjoying your retrospective of Obama and how he got to where he is today. Please, Please no more polygamy!! We have had this for the entire last week and now it continues. Have pity on the viewer who really enjoys politics. I know there is a lull now but please think of something else. That story is just boring.
By the way....looking quite dapper tonite, especially the tie.

  35. Katie

I must be the only one finding it hard to multitask – refreshing this page, and trying to actually interact, at the same time as trying to watch and listen to the show.

Kristin, I don't think you're alone there. I kept leaning towards Clinton, then coming back to Obama...now I'm determined to sit on the fence until it's election time. The Democratic party is exhibiting so much infighting...I'd rather just wait until they sort it out themselves.

    Anderson,
thanks for profiling Barack Obama! I do look forward to the coverage of the other candidates, John McCain and Hilary Clinton!

I am a bit surprised to see that more blogs are about Erica and ties than about the life story of one of our candidates! Folks, we need all the information we can get on these candidates, don't you think? Listen up!

Anderson, how did you decide who was going first – and what nights they would be on?

    April 15, 2008 at 10:48 pm |

Great idea. Like the in depth reports on the candidates. It's great when you learn something you didn't know before. Looking forward to seeing the reports on the other candidates.

P.S. Erica so I decided to try this hot water thing... I actually like it, maybe it will help me cut back on my coffee consumption... !

  46. Kim

Anderson, Erica, do you guys have even a second to yourselves during the show with anchoring, rewriting segments and blogging?

    April 15, 2008 at 10:47 pm |
  47. Marie_ Palm Springs, CA

And they call him an elitist? AC I’m so happy you’re doing a story on Obama.
So many have misinformation, incorrect information, and obviously the wrong idea about Sen. Obama and where he came from. Obama is certainly not an elitist, but a man who has worked very hard to get where he is today. I cling to hope, that Obama will be our next President.

    April 15, 2008 at 10:47 pm |
  48. Brian Persaud

AC/Erica> So I assume Thursday there will be a segment on Hillary?

    April 15, 2008 at 10:46 pm |
  49. Beth in CT

Nice piece on Barack Obama – haven't seen any photos from his youth.

Regarding the sexual abuse issue – how can you possibly be suspect of anyone who is brave enough to come forward and admit such a thing. What could they have to gain by lying about it? And even if someone would be low enough to feign such a thing, every case has to be taken seriously and addressed or, for the victims, the issue stays hidden like it had for all these years.

He did go silent on the war after he was in the Senate. Anderson, you are providing some very interesting insights into this candidate!
