Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 4/15/08

Tonight, we start in Eldorado with new details from inside the reclusive polygamist compound. Hundreds of children are in state custody and their mothers say they’re being persecuted for practicing an unpopular religion. We also have new pictures taken by members of the sect that show authorities entering the compound in armored personnel carriers and carrying automatic weapons.

The Pope landed at Andrews Air Force Base this afternoon where he was greeted personally by President Bush. It's the first time ever an American president has traveled out to Andrews to welcome a foreign leader and it's the first papal visit since the sex abuse scandal exploded. Find out what the Pope said about that.

We’ll have an up close look at Sen. Barack Obama and who he is and how he became that person. This is the first in a series of in depth pieces on all three candidates.

Finally, Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker and his battle with mental illness. The NFL superstar says he doesn't even remember winning the Heisman trophy because he was too busy struggling with a mental disorder. It’s called dissociative identity disorder and Dr. Sanjay Gupta will have all the details.

And be sure to check out our new live web camera from the 360° studio. The shot features a behind the scenes look at the set. We’ll turn the camera on at 945p ET and turn it off at 11p ET. LINK TO THE BLOG CAMERA

We’ll start posting comments to this blog at 10p ET and stop at 11p ET.

    Anderson

If you think you've taken a lot of flack for being pro Obama before, this piece may just cement it for the Clinton supporters.

I'm glad Obama has done so well for himself, but as his wife said – he has been given much and much is expected. He was given much and he has succeeded because he is smart and personable. He must have had a great grandmother to raise such a great young man.

I still don't feel he is ready. I still feel he is all talk and no experience and this could be costly to the American people. Do Americans really want a baby politician cutting his teeth in the White House because they are tired of the corruption and the status quo?

Senator Obama is running for president and the fact that there are so many negatives coming out of closets says a lot about his character. The story of Larry Sinclair in which there are allegations of Senator Obama’s lude and inappropriate behavior seems to be one of those things coming out in the internet. However the media and the press, which have a responsibility to report and inform American citizens of pivotal information that affects our very day life, failed to question a candidate who strives to be one of the most powerful leader for this election.

i agree that there is wrong doing in the catholic church, as there is in most large orgs, but not all of them do cover ups and not every priest is a child molester. like every thing else i think people need to be aware of the issue but not blame everyone or give up hope in the whole church

A man in a hurry to get to that next office......interesting quote.

Anderson, your forgot to mention that Obama ran against Allan Keyes in the Senate election he won. In fact, Keyes jumped in because there was no one else to run against Obama.

Anderson, your piece on Obama was terrific. I assume you will do the same for the others and I cannot wait to see them. It's been tfar too long since you have done a report like that. Love it.

The candidates have started airing commercials here in NC and interestingly Obama's is not completely truthful. Hillary's is though.
Can't wait to see what else they have in store for us over the next several weeks before the primary.

  29. Libbeatle

I think that Obama represents the cultural diversity that makes up our country. He represents how the future will be and never once have I heard how his campaign has hit financial troubles. That should be a indication on a small scale how he should help manage the country finance-wise.

  30. Brandi down the bayou.

Oh. PLEASE get AC his photo back!! lol We dont want him to have photo envy, it could damage him emotionally for the rest of his life! lol

Brian, again, you are right, the younger the child is, the more recovery made and the easier it is on them. I would rather see them removed now, at the young ages, than when they are older after long term abuse has occurred.

Oh, not sure who this one is for, but all those women have the same thing as everyone else in this world, FREE WILL. They choose to let their children be abused and to accept it.

But Anderson, Erica may be more computer savvy than you but you are the "blackberry" guru. Am I right? You do a mean twirl...:)

I am a Social Studies teacher. I have watched the politics of the day with fascination. One vocabulary term students is learning is mudslinging. The same tactics that were used when Adams was running against Jackson. I marvel at how history truly repeats itself.

  33. Michael Svoboda

Great story Anderson. I support Obama. I think he has what it takes to bring this nation together; to unite it once again. Bush has definitely divided this nation by beginning a war that has killed over 3,000+ U.S. Troops alone and have caused major problems around the world. The rest of the world practically hates the U.S. for this. Obama brings along diversity with his campaign as well as a strong sense of accomplishment . Not all presidential candidates, I believe, need to have experience. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.

Can anybody tell me why Barack would lie about how his parents met? He said they met at a march in Selma, AL in 1965. He was born in 1961.

  46. Billi

    Nice report, Anderson.

Are you saying in your report that Senator Obama spent "a few years" as a community organizer? I thought he said he spent many more years than that doing so.

  47. Betty Ann

Hillary won't come on AC 360?
    Why is that Anderson?

    April 15, 2008 at 10:37 pm |
  48. Karoline, Los Angeles, CA

Christine, I think it's great that you have a faith and you admire the Pope, but those kids who are now adults really were molested.

People do not put themselves through such public exposure of such a shocking nature unless something real happened. Plus, most of the priests were serial abusers. They didn't just do it once-like textbook pedophiles they went from one victim to another.

I thought those former victims who came forward were some of the bravest people I've ever seen in my life. They took on the whole, giant church, the legal system, and Catholics like you who didn't want to hear it.

Let's hope it's done now and the church has learned its lessons.

    April 15, 2008 at 10:37 pm |
  49. Brian Persaud

Katie> Oh I agree with you. But like you said, what is the correct way to handle this situation? I don't think there is any good option, its just the better of many evils. But for the time being, during investigations, I really do feel like the children should be separated .
