Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 4/10/08

In tonight’s show, new pictures of the white temple at the Yearning for Zion ranch in Eldorado, Texas. In this temple adult men allegedly consummated their “spiritual marriages” to their teenage brides.

Also, the stunning revelation that local authorities in Texas had a confidential informant inside Warren Jeffs’ polygamous sect for four years. So why did it take so long for them to raid the ranch? David Mattingly will look into that.

And Dale Barlow, who reportedly was named by the alleged 16 year old victim, is living in Colorado City, Arizona even though there is an arrest warrant out for him in Texas. So why is he still at large tonight? Gary Tuchman is on that story.

Finally, the war in Iraq. It was started by one president and likely will be finished by another. Michael Ware has an extended interview with the commander on the ground, Gen. David Petraeus. We want your thoughts on this interview so we are extending the live blog. Tonight we’ll be posting comments starting at 10p ET and we’ll stop at 11:20p ET.

Be sure to check out our new live web camera from the 360° studio. The shot features a behind the scene look at the set. We’ll turn the camera on at 945p ET and turn it off at 11p ET. LINK TO THE BLOG CAMERA

Hey there, Erica:). By 'under wraps,' do you mean to say that information concerning her is simply being kept private?

Is there a limit to the amount of women they are allowed to marry at all?

    April 10, 2008 at 10:22 pm |
  5. CJ

I can understand multiple marriages between consenting adults... but with kids, thats so sick.

Lets not forget Laurean is not only AWOL but a deserter. He can go to Fort Leavenworth for that.

One last thing on the Marine case...the wife has to be questioned. She had to know something.

Now onto this polygamy case. America is free, but not free enough to allow child abuse, spousal abuse, polygamy, and the other atrocities of this sect.

Is there any word if the men at the that compound will be charged with something. Seems to me they should all be charged. Forcing any one into a marriage at any age is wrong, let alone forcing them to have sex with you after the fact. It's all wrong.

A few of you are asking about Laurean's wife - she has been kept somewhat under wraps for the past couple of months.

I don't think they can go for the death penalty because he needs to be extradited...Mexico would only turn him over to the US if we promised to NOT go for the death penalty. Mexico doesn't have the death penalty and would not send someone to a country where death would be a certainty.

  11. Brian Persaud

I think serving life is much more of a punishment than the death penalty to be honest.

    April 10, 2008 at 10:18 pm |
  12. ericacnn

Moses, because of the extradition agreement b/w the US and Mexico, prosecutor cannot seek the death penalty. There is no death penalty in Mexico, which is why this agreement is such.

No Tammy, I'm at a loss when women react like that.

No Tammy your not alone in that thought. Thats why I would like to know how she did not know about this or have more information from the get go. From earlier coverage she seemed to have assisted in his getting away.

Hi, everyone. A few of you are asking about the newer picture you see on the screen - this was recently released by the FBI, this is what they believe would be most accurate physical appearance at this time.

Keep in mind, this is something we often see - whether with fugitives or missing persons - as the closer the resemblance to the picture, the more likely people are to recognize and report seeing the person authorities are looking for.

  22. Brian Persaud

Tammy> Your definitely not the only one, she should be held accountable.

I still find it extremely hard to believe that Lorean's wife and fellow Marine who shopped with him for a shovel and paint at Lowe's didn't know what was going on. There has been a complete gag order on any information about Lorean's wife by both the Marines and the local authorities.

Won't the military get the first shot at Cesar? Will the military trying to get him back cut down the time it would take to get him back on U.S. soil? Does the UCMJ have the death penalty? While the state may not be able to go for it, the military could if they have the death penalty, right?

Hi everyone. Am I the only one who finds it alarming that his wife was communicating with him secretly and still loves him after all of this?

  29. Moses from Tallahassee

Erica, will prosecutor seek death penalty again Lauren?....this guy should pay for his crime....murdering a pregnant woman, how low can u sink....

    April 10, 2008 at 10:13 pm |
  30. CJ

I would still like to know just how involved Lauren's wife was in this. Its amazing she did not see the blood or the body in the fire pit.

  31. Jeri Bloch

Be professional, CNN. You keep putting up a picture of Laurean (with very dark facial hair) and it's not even a real picture! It's a computer generated picture that's been floating around for days...it's what the FBI thought Laurean MIGHT look like if he had grown a beard and mustache. It is utterly ridiculous that you keep showing this picture. I'm only 35 years old, but I can honestly say....I miss the good old days of TV news when professionalism actually mattered. Jeri Bloch

    you're kindly welcome!!!!!

  33. Stacy

I'm glad they caught this guy, but I really hope this isn't going to cut into the Michael Ware interview. Surely the war will be at least equal priority with one true crime story, right?

  34. Megan Dresslar

    Erica,
Will Marine bring back to North Carolina for court? I wonder....... ask Jeff Tobbin....

    April 10, 2008 at 10:09 pm |
  35. Jolene

Well, even if they can't go for the death penalty, I hope that he gets put away for life, especially since she was pregnant.

    April 10, 2008 at 10:09 pm |
  36. MaryBeth

Wait, his wife knew where he was and was communicating and that's not a crime? Just aiding him is a crime? Isn't NOT telling where he was considered aiding and abetting? Or harboring a fugitive because she knew where he was and didn't tell authorities?

  37. Teresa, Kent, Ohio

Is that pic on the right a NEW one?

Looks like Cesar Laurean had a sunny and pleasant vacation. His new facial hair looks lovely. His tan is to die for....

Time to lay down his life and freedom. What a horrible waste in so many ways.

    Hi Campbell,

It's a good thing the marine was caught. The next step is sending him back to the US. Let justice for his victims be served.

I was just thinking about this Marine story the other day. It just seemed to disappear from the news, and I didn't know if they had caught him yet... but I guess this answers my question.
