Bernstein: Hillary Clinton: Truth or Consequences

Hillary Clinton has many admirable qualities, but candor and openness and transparency and a commitment to well-established fact have not been notable among them.  The indisputable elements of  her Bosnian adventure affirm (again) the reluctant conclusion I reached in the final chapter of A Woman In Charge, my biography of her published last June:

Hillary Clinton

“Since her Arkansas years [I wrote], Hillary Rodham Clinton has always had a difficult relationship with the truth... [J]udged against the facts, she has often chosen to obfuscate, omit, and avoid.  It is an understatement by now that she has been known to apprehend truths about herself and the events of her life that others do not exactly share. " [italics added]

As I noted:

“Almost always, something holds her back from telling the whole story, as if she doesn’t trust the reader, listener, friend, interviewer, constituent—or perhaps herself—to understand the true significance of events…”

The Bosnian episode is a watershed event, because it indelibly brings to mind so many examples of this tendency– from the White House years and, worse, from Hillary Clinton’s take-no-prisoners presidential campaign. Her record as a public person is replete with “misstatements” and elisions and retracted and redacted and revoked assertions...

When the facts surrounding such characteristic episodes finally get sorted out - usually long after they have been challenged - the  mysteries and contradictions are often dealt with by Hillary Clinton and her apparat in a blizzard of footnotes, addenda, revision, and disingenuous re-explanation: as occurred in regard to the draconian secrecy she imposed on her health-care task force (and its failed efforts in 1993-94); explanations of what could have been dutifully acknowledged, and deserved to be dismissed as a minor conflict of interest - once and for all - in Whitewater; or her recent Michigan-Florida migration from acceptance of the DNC’s refusal to recognize those states’ convention delegations (when it looked like she had the nomination sewn up) to her re-evaluation of  the matter as a grave denial of basic human rights, after she fell impossibly behind in the delegate count.
The latest episode - the sniper fire she so vividly remembered and described in chilling detail to buttress her claims of  foreign policy “experience” - like the peace she didn’t bring to Northern Ireland, recalls another famous instance of faulty recollection during a crucial period in her odyssey. On January 15, 1995, she had just published her book, It Takes a Village, intended to herald a redemptive “come back” after the ravages of health care; Whitewater; the Travel Office firings she had ordered (but denied ordering); the disastrous staffing of the White House by the First Lady, not the President - all among   the egregious errors  that had led  to the election of the Newt Gingrich Congress in 1994.On her book tour, she was asked on National Public Radio about the re-emergence of dormant Whitewater questions that week, when the so-called “missing billing records” had been found. Hillary stated with unequivocal certainty that she had consistently made public all the relevant documents related to Whitewater, including “every document we had,” to the editors of the New York Times before the newspaper’s original Whitewater story ran during Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.

Even her closest aides - as in the case of the Bosnian episode18 years later - could not imagine what possessed her to say such a thing.  It was simply not true, as her lawyers and the editors of the Times (like CBS in the latest instance) recognized, leading to huge stories about her latest twisting of the facts. “Oh my God, we didn’t,” said Susan Thomasas, Hillary’s great friend, who was left to explain to the White House lawyers exactly how Hillary’s aides had carefully cherry-picked documents accessed for the Times in the presidential campaign.  The White House was forced - once again - to acknowledge the first lady had been ‘mistaken;” her book tour was overwhelmed by the matter, and Times’ columnist  Bill Safire that month coined the memorable characterization of Hillary Clinton as “a congenital liar.”

“Hillary values context; she does see the big picture. Hers, in fact, is not the mind of a conventional politician,”  I wrote in A Woman In Charge. “But when it comes to herself, she sees with something less than candor and lucidity. She sees, like so many others, what she wants to see.”

The book concludes with this paragraph:

“As Hillary has continued to speak from the protective shell of her own making, and packaged herself for the widest possible consumption, she has misrepresented not just facts but often her essential self.  Great politicians have always been marked by the consistency of their core beliefs, their strength of character in advocacy, and the self-knowledge that informs bold leadership. Almost always, Hillary has stood for good things. Yet there is a disconnect between her convictions and her words and actions. This is where Hillary disappoints. But the jury remains out. She still has time to prove her case, to effectuate those things that make her special, not fear them or camouflage them. We would all be the better for it, because what lies within may have the potential to change the world, if only a little.”

The jury - armed with definitive evidence like the CBS tape of  Hillary Clinton’s Bosnian adventure - seems on the verge of returning a negative verdict on her candidacy.

Hillary and Bill Clinton are pathological liars. Sorry Clinton supporters. But the Clintons like to LIE, and will say anything to get their way or achieve their only real goals…money and power and fame. Bill wanted to be the President and he did. Now Hillary wants to be the first woman President and she does not care about anything else. Hillary will tell the blacks, whites, latino’s and jewish people whatever she thinks they want to hear; as long as she gets to be the first woman President. Bill did the exact same thing when he ran and it worked for him so why would it not work for her?

    To allxdreammer:

keep on dreaming on as your name suggest. this same pastor provided comfort for bill clinton during his impeachment period, and remember, unlike hrc who will lie and fabricate and throw anybody under the bus for her own political goal, barack will not. non of them is perfect, but obama is bay far the better human being if we compare, seriously i know its just a question of pigmentation, taht makes people like you angry. and fyi, that outfit that hrc people put on the internet is not a ritual outfit, but a traditonal one, you moroon!

I really don't care about HIllary lying about Bosnia. I also didn't care about Bill and Monica back then and really don't care now. Drop it. Hillary's choice to stay with Bill is her business and women all over the world stay with husbands who cheat, their business not mine.

I still would rather have Hillary in the White House than an fool like Obama. He is not prepared, this is not a job you can learn as you go. All people who still think he can walk on water take a better look. A good speech does not make anything better.

Cindy might think the Bosnia deliberate hallucination is a non-issue, but Hillary has been the one to say she is ready to be commander-in-chief on day one. I am certain this isn't a good quality of a commander-in-chief. Her comments about Obama and McCain causes me to question if she is a Democrat. Much like her husband, who as President, on a few if not several occasions turned on his party for what he wanted creating havoc and causing House and Senate Democrats questioning their need to be loyal to their President and party leader.

What Cindy misses is that this goes to Hillary's values and how these would be acted out on a variety of issues during a Clinton Presidency.

Finally, I am tired of Hillary's projecting onto Obama her shortcomings and inadequacies. She has made so many mistakes during this campaign on tactics, strategy, and the issues that it disappoints the expectations of her.

I am so sick of all you hypocrites. In all my years i have NEVER seen a presidential candidate have to defend his christianity nor his Pastor. Now that a more than qualified black man is running that is all you people can harp on. Get your facts straight Obama is NOT A MUSILUM he is a christian. And his pastors remarks although controversial are true for the black man. Hillary however, is a proven liar. Now i may not agree with all of his pastors remarks but am not going to hold those remarks against him. And as for the race card Bill Clinton played that card first so if anyone should be ashamed it should be him and his wife. All Hillary had to do to secure my vote was tell the truth, she couldn't so now i will vote for Obama. She can't beat McCain anyway.

As a child I was always told your word is everything, it is all you have as a person to identify who you are. If you words could not be trusted neither could you! I can't imagine electing Hillary President when she has proven to be nothing more than a bald faced liar. By the way, what is the definition of "is" anyway Bill?

Hillary admitted to planting phony reporters in the audience to ask questions earlier in this campaign. I wonder why this reported waited until now to throw out the Wright question. The Clintons have been nothing but bad news for the Democratic Party. It was they who put the GOP in charge of both Houses of Congress for the first time in nearly 50 years. It was the Clintons who put George W in the White house. Now they are doing it again. The Clintons are NOT Democrats thats why they tanked universal health care and enacted NAFTA. They are working with the GOP to sabotage the Democratic Party.

Obama in '08: There is no other choice! Bush and the Republicans have jeopardized the future of our United States. They have broken our economic foundations; banks are in default, major, major lenders
are in default on billions of dollars in loans, family are losing their homes and worldly possessions, next will be the tanking of businesses and that means jobs for more and more People; without revenues state governments will move or go further into the red (i.e. N. Jersey), and then their is Bush's War, they say it costs something like 7 million $$$ dollars a second; the nobel lauretes and econ folk
tell us that ultimately it will cost our children and grandchildren 3 trillion dollars! That's a lot of Zeroes.

All the while Bush and his cronies have given away the fat to Oil, Energy, Pharmacutical and Military Industrial power brokers. They own the Republican party! They hijacked the party of Lincoln and have slowly but surely seized the assets of America's people. It's now time to take back our rights, our neighborhoods, and our country. Obama is the only one who can possibly get our nation back on it's feet and moving in the right direction. She no longer has the "juice" to be our leader. It's time to leave Hillary on the tarmac, while Barack takes on the task of putting us back together. We have 4 votes for Obama at our house this Nov.

    God Bless America!

Those video tapes of her hugging a little girl on the runway at Tuszla were part of a vast right wing conspiracy, which hid or destroyed the real video of Hillary running while artillery shells exploded all around her.

In fact, Hillary was killed by enemy fire that day and it is only by sheer force of will that she has made such a remarkable recovery! Anybody who can survive being killed should be president..

Besides, it's her God-given right to rule over us all. She's much smarter than all of us put together, and really is the only person alive today who can see the truth for what it is.

Why don't I hear the correct term.....a lie

    1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.
    2. something intended or serving to convey a false impression; imposture: His flashy car was a lie that deceived no one.
    3. an inaccurate or false statement.
    4. the charge or accusation of lying: He flung the lie back at his accusers.
–verb (used without object) 5. to speak falsely or utter untruth knowingly, as with intent to deceive.
    6. to express what is false; convey a false impression.
–verb (used with object) 7. to bring about or affect by lying (often used reflexively): to lie oneself out of a difficulty; accustomed to lying his way out of difficulties.

matt wrote "I keep seeing Obama refered to as a man of integrity. Once again i pose the question. How will aligning himself with Ted Kennedy change our government? What is a typical white person? How is what your pastor said any less racist than Ferraro? How does 2 years experience make you a viable candidate? WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE? Talk is cheap."

Good questions, here are the answers...
    1) Obama looks like a man of integrity when compared to a Clinton.
    2) Ted endorsed him. That isn't exactly an aliance, and even if it were is doesn't make change any less plausible then Hillary's connection to Bill (which politically was intended to be the equivilent).
    3) Typical white person? No idea, but in the context in which he said it I believe he was referring to common themes he's heard among the thousands of people thi campaign has given him the opportunity to talk to.
    4) He's not...and? Obama never slammed Ferraro btw, just denounced her comments, not the person making them – very consistent (probaby not an accident).
    5) 2 years doesn't, good think he has far more. State and local experience is relevant to leading the United States.
    6) He's going to change what Hillary wants to change. The reason Hillary is losing is because their positions on issues are so similar.

Hope that helps, here's one for you...
Given that Clinton's entire argument is her superior experience, why can't you grasp that lying to overstate her experience is a bad thing. Not just once when she was tired, but on at least three seperately filmed occasions?

When she was elected Senator of NYS I lived in another state I was not only stunned but stopped telling people where I hailed from I was embarrassed that New Yorkers could be this stupid....so I do hope they will come realize all they have given to the Clinton's with the second blunder of her becoming a Senator, life time protection, life time pay and if he dies she'll also get his pay....and the list goes on and on and on....WAKE UP AMERICA...ARE WE GOING TO LET THEM BACK INTO THE WHITE HOUSE TO EMBARRASS US SOME MORE AN STEAL FROM US AND ALSO RENT THE ROOMS OUT AGAIN....I CERTAINLY HOPE THIS CHARADE IS OVER THIS TIME.....

This is why I will never vote for her–I simply feel like I can't trust her. Hillary is very competent and capable and would be a fine president, but if she can't address the truth head on but rather will spin reality until it fits her mold, that kind of activity just breeds untrustworthiness. I'll admit that I'm a strong supporter of Obama, and this is the perfect example why. When he had a tough issue to deal with, he didn't convolute things, instead he addressed them with the American people head on and spoke to us as intelligent people rather than placating us and patronizing us with endless adjustments of the same story. Regardless of whether or not you agree or disagree with what Obama said–that alone, in my opinion, is reason enough to trust him with power more than I will ever trust Hillary.

Is it just me or does it seem like CNN may be a little bias when it comes to the democratic side of the election? Doesnt it seem like CNN always has something bad to say about Hillary and never about Obama? Isn't CNN supposed to be like a neutral party? I don't know but it seems to me like CNN is always attacking Hillary and NEVER Obama!!!! I just find it a bit ridiculous but whatever. I guess they wouldn't want to attack Obama on anything cause his camp usually turns it into a racial thing.

(from lastnight's Larry King Live transcript)

MAUREEN DOWD, OP-ED COLUMNIST, "THE NEW YORK TIMES": Well, it's interesting, Larry, because I was on the Clintons' trip to Northern Ireland. And I've noticed that progressively in the last year, she had been kind of filigreeing her accomplishments on the trip, too. I was with her. She had tea with a bunch of Catholic and Protestant women. And I'm sure it was a lovely tea, but lately she's been securing the peace in Northern Ireland.

Cynthia from Covington GA. You need to wake up and smell the coffee dear girl. If you would ever trust a politician that blatantly lies about something as simple as a trip imagine what else said politician is hiding. No experience, no creditials other than being a 1st Lady and a 1st term Senator do not a President make. There is already enough dishonesty in Washington as it is and it appears your view is to add even more blatant dishonesty. At least all the other candidates have been smart enough to not openly lie, get caught and then say Oh I'm sorry I misspoke.....what a load of crap. You are the one who needs to get OVER IT and cast a vote for someone who will at least make an attempt to do something good for this country. It seems pretty clear that Hillary Clinton is morphing into George W. Bush, Jr.

First, her judgment: she and George both have dogged determination in the face of all odds. More importantly, Hillary doesn't seem to listen to anyone beyond her immediate advisers, just as George doesn't, and she is willing to go forward with her plans no matter what the facts show, just as George did. Is the Democratic nomination becoming the Irag war revisited?

Second, she has no regard for the rules. In her most recent statements, she isn't just implying but stating straight out that pledged delegates can switch at will. Pledging doesn't seem to mean much to her. Delegates in her nomination seem to be like chads in the Florida 2000. Are they really pledged or just hanging? Should we count them? When should we count them... No matter what, it appears that the counting should be done by Hillary's Rules and no one else's.

Maybe there really is something to the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton Dynasty. They are beginning to seem a lot more like each other every day.

The Clintons are a good couple. Like husband, like wife. They are bended on making a come back on their third term of office at any cost, even through lies and blackmailing of others. They should not think the American people are stupid...

One thing I like about Hillary is that she is a good strategist who makes the best of every opportunity as it appears. It even clearer now than ever before that she manifested restrain in Monica's case in preparation for her future political career...not because she was more tolerant or because she loved Bill. She enjoys 'fowl play', it is in her DNA.

My prayer for Hillary is that she should be careful they way she gathering mud in her hands. It might be too late to tidy up before the convention.

Hillary Clinton is a pathological liar. She lies about important things and she lies about trivial things.

Does this remind anyone of someone else?

Yes, she is a lot like G.W. Bush and this country doesn't need another President who lies, and seems to actually believe his own lies.

No candidate is ever going to be perfect because no human is ever perfect. But if Hillary lies so freely before being elected, she will lie to us just as easily after she is elected.

Just another feeble attempt by radical Dems of diverting attention from the huge deficits being revealed in Barrack Obama. Frankly, this election is nearly already lost for Democrats. One of the worst comment Bush ever made was after the 2004 election he said he had gained political capital and intended on spending it, he went on and within a year had made a mess of things leading to the 2006 turnaround in the Senate and House.
The Democrats had political capital and they choose and are continuing to choose to leave it on the table and are now in the position of basically handing it back to Johnny McBush. McCain.

You know, it is not so hard for normal people like us to understand why she lies so often, because that is just her life style, she does it all the time, and not ashamed of it. Wonder how she taught her child about integrity. I used to preach in a christian church, and had to examed every single sentences I'd prepared to preach to make sure that they were all rooted from the Bible and that all quoted stories are grounded to true facts, I even trembled every time I walked to the pulpit, although I'm expereinced in preaching. Politicians need to fear God with respect to their words.

I've seen a whole bunch of comments on here from either people who are blatantly pro-Hillary or pro-Barack. At this point, I really don't care either way. But, I can tell you that lying, time after time is a horrible way to try and get elected. Hillary flips her position on something every time it's good for HER career. I cannot abide by that in a president. So, when foreign dignitaries come looking for US support on something, boom, it'll happen, whether it should or not. She can be for healthcare reform now, but when the medical industry rails against change, poof, no support anymore. It's worthless to have a president with no convictions to stand up for the things that got them nominated.

How can anyone mis-speak so many times , about an event that should be crystal clear in her memory. She had her daughter with her, hence this kind of drama could never be a fog in her mind. This was a deliberate attempt to boost her lack of experience and I find thisdeceitful. This surely brings back memories of the deceit of her husband, to the American people.
    Really sad.

This article is right on point. I am amazed by the people who continue to make excuses for Hillary and Obama. Once again, this illustrates how both of them will say anything to try and get elected, and their supporters don't seem to care about the truth. What is more important in a President than his or her character and credibility? Hillary has to try and inflate her resume because in reality there is very little for which she can take credit. She always says, "I fought for..." this or that. Really? What did she ACTUALLY accomplish? What positive contributions has she really made? What has her "leadership" in the Senate done for anyone? Can anyone name something specific? Can she? I don't think so.

Obama changes his position on issues depending on who his audience is, on NAFTA and the war, etc. He talks about bringing people together, but how can you be a "uniter" when you take your children to a church that is led by a preacher who is a racist, anti-American nut case? Would another candidate be forgiven for attending a church led by David Duke? Racism from any person should never be tolerated, especially by a Presidential candidate. A true leader would take a stand and try and reason with this man, or find another church. Sure, you can't hold him responsible for what the pastor says, put you can hold him accountable for sitting on his hands for twenty years as a member who allowed this filth to continue.

We must judge these candidates by what we actually know of them, the judgements they have made, and the people with whom they associate, not just by what they want us to hear. Who does that leave? John McCain. He's certainly not my first choice, but at least you know the man has character. And these days, apparently, that is a damn rare thing.

yeah! politicians dont embellish. i mean look at the Bush admn on pre-Iraq war intel or barack on ever hearing wright's anti-americanism despite 20 yrs of close uncle-like association! hillary's comments and intention is least bothersome, if at all. GO HILLARY!

The Clinton lies is finally coming home to roost with the Fairy Tale of Bosnia. I wonder if this is the final nail to their political life ? What an
irony indeed if this is it and re-affirm the old biblical saying "Live by the
Sword and die by the Sword". I bet not, the Clinton are just too good and too slick that they will resort to destroying people who contradicts them. I wonder if Vince's expression of regret before dying refers to the Clintons as the destroyer of good people. I wonder if Sinbad will even get an apology from her campaign for dissing him after disputing this half of the conjugal pathological lying couple.

Hillary and Bill are attorneys. The only people on earth proven to lie more than politicians. Nuff said.

What irks me is the number of comments I keep seeing that fault Hillary for not dumping the President after the Monica affair. What happened to "family values" and the "sanctity of marriage?" Why does staying with a man after a transgression like that mean Hillary is power-hungry? What if - God forbid - she VALUED her family and - shock of shocks - respects the vows she took?

What if - lo and behold! - she's actually shown some CHRISTIAN VALUES in not dumping and running the moment a marriage isn't going well?

She's far from perfect. Her embellishment might be the final nail in the coffin for her campaign. But all of you should take a deep look at yourselves and your OWN values if you really believe NOT dumping your spouse and running when your spouse messes up is somehow a sign of weakness or fault. It's STRENGTH. It takes REAL STRENGTH to try and hold a family together under those circumstances.

And - a final point regarding Obama's pastor. This was not just Obama's pastor - Obama has said himself the man was a MENTOR and he was ACTIVELY INVOLVED in Obama's campaign. BIG difference.

Come on! Give Hillary a break. We need a President with a vivid imagination. Someone who can "spin gold" and a good tale now and then. Can't you see her regaling the foreign leaders with after dinner stories of unsurpassed amusement and excitement. I think that is what this Country needs-a good story teller. Over the years, she has been one of the best among our office holders. So give her a break. I bet that gal has a thousand more "tales" she can tell. Let it all hang out Hillary. I want to hear more stories like Bosnia. You had me on the edge of my seat. Wow!

I'm a Democrat...and would have voted for whomever was chosen as the nominee of the Party. However, now I would not support her. Her campaign tactics and demonstrated and constant prevarication, have changed my mind. I will not vote for her even were she to somehow win the nomination. No more "lesser of two evils" for me. Sad to say, but true.

    Obama '08!

I really don't think that Hillary knows what the truth is anymore. Is it just me or is she living in her own little world. Face it, she was caught in a lie. Not a little fib to cover her butt, it was nothing more than a flat out lie used to add a little spice to her story. I'm sure this isn't the first and more than likely will not be the last...

What respect I had for her has left...

Hillary is a joke around the world... most especially here in Australia. I am an expat living here and I voted for Obama – because I read his books, listened to his speeches and presentations. I watched him as an honourable man – address THE most sensitive issue in any country – not just the USA – RACE – with dignity and honour. No blaming – no name calling and no diverting. He stayed with the issues.

When confronted with a serious breach of integrity, Ms. Clinton might as well have said "I did not have sex with that woman" for all the truth she was telling. There are so many questions to ask – BUT I will ask only one – how do you, Ms. Clinton, sleep at night knowing you not only lied about your supposed risk in Bosnia but all of the lies you have had your daughter support. – Jogging around the WTC on 9/11. How embarrassing.

How can you possibly think that other leaders of the world will take you seriously when you cannot tell the truth – "congenital liar" – from birth.

Quite a title to wear. You chose it – your paid for it. Tears and BS will not help you regain your trustworthiness.

By the way, how many planted protesters and questioners do you use. We all know Bill used heaps.

As I have told people from the beginning, Mrs. Clinton does not care about improving this country in the least. It is all about HER. This is yet another instance in which we can see this. She has not taken responsibility for her vote on the war, nor has she been held accountable for her Senate vote declaring the Iranian Guard as a terror organization, a vote that helps the current Administration's move for war against that nation.
Senator Clinton is also showing she cares little about us because she is now forced to tear Senator Obama down in order to win at all costs. I find this to be quite selfish..putting your own ambitions over that of the betterment of the country. Why would you try and make another democratic candidate appear unelectable while propping up the republican candidate?
Hillary supporters who say they'll vote for McCain over Obama in the genereal election, ask yourselves this question... why are you supporting this candidate? To bring healthcare to the American people? To end the war? To help bring prosperity back to the middle class? If you answer yes to any of these.. why would you vote for the candidate who has no intention of doing any of these things. Remember, a protest vote against Obama only hurts we, the people.
