Live Blog from the Anchor Desk 3/17/08

Soledad O'Brien is in for Anderson tonight. Some of the topics:

– Florida state Democratic leaders said they've given up holding a do-over primary. So what next?
– The government is helping bail out Bear Sterns, the investment bank that became the latest casualty in the mortgage crisis.
– John McCain makes a trip to Iraq – his first since becoming the probably Republican nominee.

We'll start posting comments at 10p ET and stop at 11p ET.

Hi Soledad! Why aren't you wearing green today? Sounds like a good show tonight.

I think that Senator Obama needs to make up his mind. What kind of country is he going to lead? If he wants someboby like Mr. Wright to advise him.

So if Florida and Michigan were still in the Democratic nominee would need 2400 or so delegates. The Democrat side is so complicated on so many levels

Yes there is a lot of more bad news waiting to come out. McCain is an honerable person (well for a republican), but scary to think of his as the next president.

I am sooo disapointed in CNN's continuing on this Rev. Wright rant and the race issue. Other news sources have dropped this. Why does CNN continue to focus on this!! Please...move on!

Halving the delegates would have no effect on the overall count. Don't count them. The end result is the same. The larger goal here is electing a Democrat. Both camps have to think of the larger prize and come up with a solution (spin, spin) that will make both camp's supports happy regardless of who wins the nomination.

Florida didn't follow the rules, they should not be seated. But if they do seat them there is only one fair way....I'm sure Hillary will agree.
Give each candidate 50 % of the delegates and no super delegates. The super delegates should not be seated, they didn't follow the rules and should of taken charge of the situation.

That's the only fair way to do it, since both candidates agreed not to campaign there. However, alot of people didn't vote because they knew their vote would not count toward the Presidential race.
But they need to get this taken care of sooner rather than later.

Right or wrong on Trinity Church (Rev. Wright) this is a nightmare. I don't know that they can move on from this with certain demographics of this country.

Hey Candy, its hard to get "this" behind him when you people do nothing but talk about it while there are about 500 more important things to discuss.

  13. Chuck Alabama

    HA HA.

The "black church" sees this differently. Where's the "UNITY" in that? Why don't we all just see this man for what he is? He is a bigot.

Now Obama is going to tell us he slept in church for 20 years. I, for one, am not that gullible.

Megan, they are out. That is the number without FL or MI.

Jennifer, guaranteed they'll have a special task force or some kind of board to make sure the rules are followed next time. It's a very unfortunate way to learn the rules, but they should have read the rulebook before they held their own election and figured they could call their own shots outside of the party guidelines.

I think they should halve the delegates and be done with it.

I agree with Jeffrey Toobin. These are political parties not the "government" as some people think. No court should be involved.

  19. Megan O. Toronto, ON, Canada

This may be a stupid question but can't they take the number of Michigan and Florida delegates away from the 2,024 total if their delegates are not seated?

Im sure lots of people are upset about the decision by the fla dnc but i am so glad that some headway is being made...theres just no way to make everyone happy. how do some fla voters feel?

Hoping for a good show tonite. Florida really can't win for losing. Those rules for the early primary got in because the Dems were voting for Election Reform and that earlier primary date was buried in the packet. Hard Cheese now. I bet Floridians will be smarting for years over this screw up. First the hanging chad now the chad that never was.

There are 2 things that are bothering me about the coverage of this situation. First, why are the motives of governor Crist for doing this, knowing the consequences, not further being scrutinized? Second, how many people didn't even bother voting because they knew their vote wouldn't count.

25 electoral votes for John McCain and we haven't even had the convention! Well done Howard Dean! Best thing to happen to Republicans since, well I don't remember when.

Candy Crowley. Also another favorite, always happy when she is on. She is truly gifted at giving her analysis without sounding biased against one camp or another.

    Happy St. Patty's day!!

So Florida is off the totals..that was the right thing to do! You can't let people break the rules and expect to get away with it. You have to respect the rules that are made for you. Floridians got taught that lesson loud and clear.
Guaranteed they won't break the rules again! Live and learn.

    Hey Soledad, where's Anderson?

McCain in Iraq...what a joke. SO safe that he couldn't be on the ground until it was COMPLETELY swept of weapons and enemies and couldn't walk through without a crowd of people around him.

    It's just McSame.
