It was the moment Carolyn Jessop had been waiting for. The mother of 8 and 4th wife of a powerful FLDS man wanted out of the only life she knew. It was a rare moment. All of Jessop’s 8 children were home and her husband was not. She only had a few hours to gather her kids and leave the polygamist life where she was born and raised. She says she was desperately seeking a new life on the outside. She wanted to escape.

Carolyn Jessop broke free from a life of arranged marriage, polygamy and a male dominated and controlled society. She says she wanted more for her and her children. Jessop began a new life with her children outside the FLDS. Her kids attended public school and no longer practiced the religion with which they were raised.

After 4 years, when Carolyn’s daughter Betty turned 18, she told her mother this new life was not for her. Betty wanted to return to her former life. She was the only of the 8 children who desired to go back. Carolyn Jessop was shocked, but her daughter was now an adult and could make her own decisions. She says she had no choice but to let her return.

Since Betty’s return the family has had little contact. Carolyn says she doesn’t know how to get in touch with her daughter. Earlier this week, we were invited on the FLDS compound. We came across Betty while interviewing other mothers and children. She agreed to give us a short interview and we showed the tape to Carolyn. It was the first time Carolyn would see and hear from her daughter in over a year.

With an FLDS leader close by, Betty says she has forgiven her mother for taking her from the life she knew. That she is at peace now that she is back in the place she loves. She adds that she doesn’t think she’ll ever be with her mother and family again. Carolyn says she is confident one day, Betty will return to her and life outside the FLDS. Gary Tuchman has their story tonight at 10pm on AC360.

As we drove past the huge white gates at the Yearning for Zion ranch in Eldorado, Texas, we weren’t sure what to expect. The last time we were here was in June of last year when the state of Texas raided the FLDS property and took 462 children and placed them in state custody. Allegations of child brides, sex with minors, and abuse put a spotlight on the FLDS and what was going on inside this ranch. We were allowed in to speak with mothers who were pleading for their children to be returned. It was our first look inside this secretive religion which practices polygamy.

Today we were invited again. We were given a guided tour by one of the church leaders Willie Jessop. He says life here on the ranch is much different that what many people believe. He allowed us to meet and speak with mothers and children who say they were taken from the ranch last year before being returned.

At first, the ranch seemed desolate and the same as it was the last time we visited. As we took our tour we saw more work had been done in fields of crops they say were ruined during the raid. As time passed we began to see women and children outside their homes working and playing in front of their homes.

We came across children who were picking carrots and doing other work around the ranch. All say they are more than thrilled to have been returned to their families and the life they know. Some say that being away from their home and their life as they knew it only strengthened their faith.

Outside the ranch in the Schleicher County courthouse, 10 FLDS men were present today for pretrial motions on their cases involving sexual assault of a minor and other various charges related to underage marriage and bigamy. Their trial dates are scheduled for the fall.

The story of this alleged 14-year-old "wife" is disturbing…See the pictures of her kissing her "husband" Warren Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). He is in prison after being convicted for his role in arranging the marriage of another underage girl.

The girl in court today should be out playing with her friends..on a soccer team or at the roller skating rink. Instead, the state of Texas is trying to keep her in foster care instead of releasing her back to the polygamist ranch. Court documents show that the 14 year old (who’s name we are not revealing since she is a minor) was only 12 when she allegedly was married to Jeffs. The girl's mother continues to reject all allegations that she's an unfit parent.

This child also thinks her mother did no wrong…They were raised in this polygamist world and they knew no other. This little girl was ripped away from all that she knew and placed in the hands of total strangers.

And the mother has been separated from her daughter..I cannot imagine what the two are going through, but can't help wondering: are they both victims? The goal should be what is best for the child.. What would that be, right now?

I know a lot of polygamists. Covering fundamentalist sects that have broken away from the Mormon Church will do that for you.

Most of the women I talk to who share their husband with other women laugh at me when I suggest they are being used and abused. They tend to tell me they can't imagine a life without their "sister wives" and their husband all together.

Meanwhile, men who are married to many wives tend to tell me they have plenty of love to give to all of them; and they often add, ‘why is what they do worse than a single man who has relationships with lots of women, or a husband who cheats on his wife?’

One thing they all tell me is that they believe polygamous marriages are holy in the eyes of the Lord. Their beliefs are strong; but they almost always prefer to stay very low profile because polygamy is illegal and they fear prosecution.

Polygamy is almost never prosecuted. You probably know that polygamist leader Warren Jeffs is in jail. But his convictions as well as other charges against him involve the marriage and resulting sexual abuse of girls under the age of 18, not the fact that he's believed to be married to scores of women.

So that's why what happened in Canada this week is remarkable. One of Warren Jeff's archrivals, Winston Blackmore, who heads one of the biggest polygamist communities in North America, was arrested in British Columbia and charged with the crime of polygamy.

I first met Blackmore in 2006. He used to be part of the group run by Warren Jeffs, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or FLDS - whose Texas ranch of a few thousand members was raided by authorities last year amid allegations abuse of underage girls. FLDS members have pleaded not guilty to charges, and the case is still under investigation by Texas authorities.

Blackmore and Jeffs had a falling out several years ago, and Jeffs kicked Blackmore out of the sect. But most members of the Canada compound remained loyal to Blackmore, who has continued to lead the compound with nearly 1000 members in Western Canada. Jeffs is a very strange bird - self-righteous, distant and narcissistic.

In contrast, Blackmore comes off as a pretty normal, friendly even jovial guy. But then you find out about his life and you see he's not like most of us. He told me he had more than a dozen wives, and at least 100 children. He also acknowledged at the time that some of his wives were under 18 when he married them. And notably, he predicted Canadian authorities would arrest him someday. Well, he was right.

Blackmore has been charged with polygamy; making him the highest-profile person in North America to be arrested for that crime in many years. His defense will almost certainly involve claims that this is a violation of his religious freedoms. Canadian authorities will almost certainly dispute that.

Either way, it means that fear of government authorities and other outsiders - already quite prevalent among polygamists - will become more acute. I called a woman I know who has a husband and one other sister wife. She has been quite friendly in the past. When I asked her if she had a reaction to the Winston Blackmore arrest, she hung up on me.

Relief. Justice. Accountability. Those three words best express my reaction to the news that my ex-husband, Merril Jessop, one of the most powerful men in the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), has been indicted.

Merril, 72, is charged with conducting the marriage of an underage girl—his own daughter—to the FLDS “prophet” Warren Jeffs. I know her; she was 12 years old when she was forced to marry. Merril posted $30,000 in bail yesterday and is free. But he’s been charged with a felony and will stand trial.

Merril is in charge of the compound in Texas that’s home to hundreds of FLDS members and that was raided last April on accusations of marriages of underage girls. In fact, Merril has headed the sect since 2006, when Jeffs was put on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, fled the compound, and was later convicted on a charge related to the marriage of a girl to an older man.

I long ago worked through the anger I felt toward Merril, whom I was forced to marry at 18. I was his fourth wife and we had 8 children in 15 years. Five years ago I fled with all of my children in the middle of the night. The book I wrote about my life, ESCAPE, became a bestseller.

I knew I couldn’t stay silent when crimes were being perpetrated against so many women and children still trapped in the FLDS. I wrote ESCAPE to bring attention to the rampant degradation, humiliation and exploitation that was routinely done by the FLDS in the name of “God.”

I wanted men who perpetuated crimes against women and children in the FLDS held accountable and brought to justice. I wanted the crimes to stop.

So far, 12 men connected with the FLDS compound in Texas have now been indicted. But until this week, those charged had been underlings. My fear was that unless the top leadership was held accountable the less powerful would be forced to fall on their swords and cut deals to avoid having evidence come out in their trials.

But the latest round of indictments changed everything. Merril Jessop is one of the most powerful men – if not the most powerful man - in the FLDS now that the “prophet” is behind bars.

Merril’s indictment, along with that of Wendell Nielson, 68, who was charged with three felony count of bigamy, sends a powerful message to every member of the FLDS: your crimes will be prosecuted.

Truckloads of evidence were seized by the Texas authorities when the FLDS compound was raided. When these men go on trial, that evidence will be made public. Facts are facts. The FLDS always tries to discredit women who flee. But evidence collected from the compound will speak for itself.

Emotionally, I feel that a tremendous burden has been lifted from me. So much has happened to me this past year since the publication of ESCAPE and the raid on the Texas compound. But now I know that the key leadership of the FLDS is going to be prosecuted I feel a deep sense of peace. My thankfulness knows no bounds.

The patriarch of the world's biggest polygamist sect's compound in Eldorado, Texas turned himself in after being indicted on felony charges. Fredrick Merril Jessop, 72, of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), is charged with one count of conducting an unlawful marriage ceremony involving a minor, which is a third-degree felony.

Jessop has been running the compound, called the Yearning for Zion Ranch, home to hundreds of church members. He was husband of Carolyn Jessop, who wrote in her best-selling book, "Escape" about their marriage and life in the FLDS, and her frightening escape from Merril Jessop and the compound with her children.

Carolyn Jessop and others have said girls as young 11 have been forced into polygamists marriages with older men, boys have been ejected from the sect on trumped up infractions, and children have been beaten.

Two other FLDS elders were also charged, and turned themselves in. Wendell Loy Nieslen, 68, is charged with three counts of third-degree felony bigamy. Leroy Johnson Steed, 42, is charged with one count of sexual assault of a child, one count of second-degree felony bigamy, one count of third-degree felony bigamy, and one count of tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony.

Also named in the indictments handed down by a Texas grand jury was the sect's "prophet" Warren Jeffs. He is charged with a first-degree felony count of aggravated sexual assault, of top of the July indictment that accused him of sexually assaulting a child. Jeffs is already in prison on a conviction on helping arrange the marriage of a minor.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said 12 people associated with the compound have now been indicted, and his investigation continues.

Three more members of a polygamous sect led by Warren Jeffs are now facing sexual assault charges associated with the "marriage" of teenage girls to adult men.

That brings the total number of FLDS men indicted by the Texas grand jury to 9. Does that sound like a lot to anyone?

It's been eight months since Texas authorities raided the Yearning for Zion Ranch–taking 400+ children into custody. It's been four months since the courts ordered the state to send them all home.
We don't know the names of the three new defendants. The other six, including Warren Jeffs haven't gone to trial yet..

Texas authorities say the investigation is on-going. I hope we will learn soon where this investigation is actually going and when they plan to get there.

Warren Jeff's fundamentalist polygamist sect has never been so vulnerable.

A grand jury in Texas has indicted three FLDS members on charges related to accusations of sexual abuse of children through marriage of underage girls to older men.

This follows the indictment of five others last month, including Warren Jeffs himself on new charges, Jeffs is already in prison after being convicted as an accomplice to rape for arranging an underage marriage.

There is no reason to doubt that more members of this church are being investigated.

One might think all this is giving some  members second thoughts. But in this church, where the hierarchy is as rigid and strict as old Stalinist regimes, no member in good standing would ever tell an outsider that.

On the contrary, one member I called tells me this "strengthens his faith." It's an attack against their religion, he says.

Justice may be getting served. But it's also increasing a martyr complex among members of this church. And you have to wonder what effect that might have on the men, women and children of this church.

Two weekends ago, I saw the pictorial in the Sunday New York Times Magazine on the FLDS families living in San Antonio that were profiled, and thought to myself, what comes next in the investigation stemming from the April raid on the polygamy ranch in Eldorado?

And today we learned that the Texas Department of Child Protective Services is seeking foster care for eight children who returned to living with their families on the ranch back in June.

CPS is asking a judge to put the children into foster care because they say “their mothers have refused to limit the children’s contact with men involved in underage marriages.”

CPS is asking the mothers of all girls aged 10-17 to sign safety plans to protect their children from sexual abuse.

Mothers of the eight children who CPS is seeking foster care for have refused to sign the safety plan.

According to CPS, among other things, the safety plan requires that mothers keep children away from a man who “married underage girls or agreed to an arranged marriage on an underage daughter.”

CPS is asking hearings to be set for removal of the eight children.

No word yet on whether the court will grant the hearings.

When Senator Harry Reid of Nevada accuses polygamists of forming "a sophisticated, wealthy and vast criminal organization" and calls polygamous communities "a form of organized crime," he speaks from experience that goes beyond his role as Senate Majority Leader.

Years ago, Reid was the head of the Nevada Gaming Commission and worked to root out organized crime from Las Vegas casinos. He says polygamous communities in the U.S. are not the same as the old Vegas mobs but he says they continue to engage in crimes too serious to ignore. He wants Congress to approve a federal polygamy task force and funds to help protect possible witnesses of crimes.

A Senate hearing this morning brought out testimony from state and federal prosecutors calling for more resources to pursue crimes committed across state lines by polygamous groups like the FLDS. No one from the FLDS was asked to testify. Afterward I spoke to FLDS spokesman Willie Jessop who bristled at the accusations for my report on tonight’s AC360°. He said authorities are making blanket accusations without hard evidence. It was the same complaint he raised in Texas where six FLDS men including sect leader Warren Jeffs were indicted this week on charges stemming from the marriages of underage girls.

Jailed polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was taken to a hospital in Las Vegas on Tuesday, but police would not say why.

Las Vegas police Officer Jose Montoya said Jeffs was taken from an Arizona jail to the Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

"I can't tell you why he was brought here or what his condition is," he said.

He referred questions to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office in Arizona. A call to the sheriff's spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

The jail, in Kingman, Arizona, is about 100 miles from the medical center.

Jeffs, 52, is the leader of the estimated 10,000-member Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He is awaiting trial on 10 felony charges - five counts of sexual conduct with a minor, four counts of incest and one count of conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor...

A lawyer for the 16-year-old daughter of polygamist group leader Warren Jeffs is requesting a restraining order to prevent a spokesman for the group from intimidating and harassing the girl.

The request for a restraining order against Willie Jessop was filed in San Angelo today by Natalie Malonis.

The teenager was one of the hundreds of children taken from the Yearning For Zion Ranch by Texas Child Protective Services in April because investigators believed they were exposed to abuse by members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Her name is not being disclosed because Malonis has said that she is a victim of sexual abuse.

Malonis, of Dallas, maintains in her request that Jessop has "engaged in conduct designed to intimidate and harrass" Malonis and her client.

Several sources close to the case have indicated that the girl is expected to be asked to testify before a Schleicher County grand jury, which next week will begin hearing the state of Texas' criminal case against FLDS members.

Malonis' request comes one day after investigators from the Texas Attorney General's Office attempted to serve the girl with a subpoena, but were unable to locate her.

"I believe that (the girl) was avoiding service because of coercion and improper influence from Willie Jessop," the order states.

When the teenager could not be located by investigators or her attorney, court officials contacted Malonis to tell her a letter had been filed with them, purportedly written by the girl and claiming that her attorney had said "untrue" things about the FLDS.

The gates outside the Yearning For Zion ranch in Eldorado, Texas, are usually locked. But they were open late Tuesday, as families returned to the sprawling ranch with children being returned from foster homes around the state.

“We just traveled day and night. Texas is a beautiful state, I had no idea I would see that much of it,” Zavenda Young said, holding her youngest daughter while her husband Edson Jessop embraced their sons.

“We are sure grateful to be home,” she added. “We’ve traveled 11,000 miles covering visits to the children, visits with attorneys, and all.”

Young told reporters the family had been temporarily living in the Houston area as they shuttled in between their four children and their caseworkers.

“The people that have been taking care of the children were doing such a wonderful job. They literally cried when we took them away,” Young said of the foster parents who cared for the children after they were removed from the ranch by state officials in April, citing evidence of underage marriages and statutory rape.

Young said the children had been hit hard by the removal to foster homes around the state. "They are dazed," she said. "They are not the same. We hope they pull out of it.”

Some reporters asked returning children how it felt to be back with their parents on the ranch. Clearly still shaken by the experience, children clung to their parents and shied away from the cameras.

Jessop said the raid had created misconceptions of the FLDS members of the polygamist ranch:

“We feel that everybody has been fed a whole bunch of garbage about us. I think when most people come to know us they come to learn that we are different than they suppose, but it’s really hard to change the spots on a leopard-we are what we are. I am the same kind of man that my father and grandfather was. I don’t know why the world wants to change me.”

On the face of it, the Texas Supreme Court's 6-3 vote to support the Appellate Court reversal of Judge Walther's decision—to remove the children from the FLDS compound in Eldorado—might look like a blow, but I don't see it that way.

The fact is, the overall situation is vastly improved for the children and other members of the group and there is great hope.

•First of all, I predict there will not be any more so-called “spiritual” marriages involving underage children.

•Second, the investigation into the facts of child sexual abuse—of girls as well as boys—has begun and is set to continue.

•Third, despite the upset brought about by the dramatic intervention by Texas Child Protective Services, the children and other members of the FLDS group have no doubt had many, many positive experiences with people in the real world, as evidenced by the tearful goodbyes when they had to go back.

•Fourth, the "genie is out of the bottle" and the FLDS leadership will have a very difficult time re-indoctrinating everyone into "keeping sweet"— the mind control state of complete and unquestioning obedience — because so many members have now seen and experienced so many positives of being outside the closed, totalitarian community.

For example, FLDS teaches that African Americans are creatures of the devil and yet the children, who have met and been helped by black caregivers, now have found them to be filled with intelligence, love and spirit.

Even the adults of the community have had positive experiences interacting with lawyers, media people and others who have helped them regain access to their children.

Lastly, the media coverage has shed a light on the realities of mind control: FLDS is only one of many authoritarian groups in the United States, daily denying basic human rights to their members and all too often perpetrating the vilest of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.

I do think there was trauma at first when they were taken from everything they knew.  However, I do believe there was a tremendous amount of child abuse going on aside from underage sexual molestation. I do believe that the FLDS will need to be on their best behavior ever. They have never had to think about the "outside world" until that was shattered when Jeffs, the "Prophet" was arrested and convicted.

So how does the state give the kids back?

This morning Judge Barbara Walther asked for all the players to join in court today. A 2pm "conference" to decide how the court will abide by the Texas Supreme Court's decision to essentially give the FLDS kids back to their families.

The court was packed this afternoon as attorneys, FLDS mothers, and media filled the seats. All waiting to hear how this would all be resolved.

The state drafted up some language on how to return the children, with guidelines. Some of those proposals:

•Child Protective Services (CPS) must be allowed on and off the YFZ ranch for unannounced visits.
•Parents must take parenting classes.
•Children are not allowed to leave the state.
•Specific definitions of what the word "home" is..to avoid prior confusion about dwellings on the ranch.
•Kids are supposed to be picked up by their parents starting Monday morning.

All the details of these and other stipulations are being worked out as many of the attorneys are stating concerns and questions like: What about those children whose parents have yet to be identified?

ELDORADO, Texas - Schleicher County, Texas is the kind of small community where everyone knows your name. This tiny town has two traffic lights and gas stations, a few restaurants, a small, local weekly paper and now - possibly hundreds of new voters.

A few years ago, when the FLDS polygamist sect set up camp on their new 1,700-acre property, they told local officials they wanted nothing to do with local government. They say they just wanted to stay to themselves in their secluded YFZ ranch, where they were building massive homes and a temple as more FLDS members moved in.

But their promise to stay out of local government has changed since Texas authorities raided their property on April 3.

FLDS members are now grabbing up voter registration forms in hopes of sending hundreds of new voters to the polls. That's a concern for local residents here in Schleicher County where there are only 1,900 registered voters.

“This is the only thing the only thing you have to stop what’s happening going forward” said Willie Jessop, an FLDS member and spokesman.

Jessop says they're no longer going to sit back and avoid taking part in local government.

“The only chance we have that has been given to us by our founding fathers, is to vote,” exclaimed Jessop.

Since the polygamous sect members headed to the local county election registrar last week, rumors have been swirling about what their intentions may be. It’s the main topic for conversation at Rosa’s Casita restaurant.

“I think it’s very much a concern,” said Carolyn Mittel, a local resident. "“I think most everyone in town would be very concerned about it.”

Another resident, Joe Kotsch believes those new voters could swing an election: “They have so may new people out there, they could out power people who vote here.”

One man who is up for re-election this November is local sheriff, David Doran. He won his last election by less than 500 votes. His department helped gain access to the YFZ ranch during the raid that has become the focus of the FLDS - which feels they were slighted by the sheriff.

“Once you violate that public trust, the only recourse you have is to have them removed from public office,” said Jessop.

It’s a concern for Sheriff Doran who says hundreds of new voters could certainly swing an election.

“If we had a mass registration out of retaliation purposes," Doran said. "That concerns me that there could be a different factor coming in messing with the election.”

Of bigger concern to local residents is how far the FLDS would be willing to go.

When asked if they planned to have FLDS members as write-in candidates for local elections in the future, Jessop responded, "We are not ruling out any possibilities.”

It looks like payback time in Eldorado. Members of the secluded, polygamist sect felt vindicated yesterday when the Texas Supreme Court agreed state authorities did not have the right to take all 400-plus children into custody. But the FLDS families don't plan to go home quietly. Come November...they plan to vote.

I spoke at length with sect spokesman Willie Jessop about plans to register five to six hundred FLDS voters. Schleicher County has fewer than 19 hundred registered voters and no candidate is safe.

Sheriff David Doran, one of the leaders of the April raid at the YFZ ranch was the leading county vote-getter four years ago with just 903 votes. He's in for the re-election campaign of his life.

The County Commissioner from the precinct where you find the FLDS compound should also be worried. He ran unopposed four years ago and got into office with just 154 votes. Just a couple hundred write-in votes could conceivably land a sect member a seat on the county commission.

There is a reason two appellate courts in Texas — first a three-court panel of the state court of appeals and now the Texas Supreme Court — have ordered the return of children removed from a polygamist ranch to their mothers: It is the right thing to do.

Not as a matter of sympathy, or morality, or decency, but as a matter of constitutional law.
To be sure, the Texas Supreme Court today did not specifically find the absence of wrongdoing at the ranch — where authorities contend sexual abuse of young girls is routine. Indeed, the court acknowledged the state’s interest in protecting children from harm. But state agents cannot simply storm homes, polygamist or otherwise, to remove children without a showing of abuse. Suspicions are not enough.

It is perhaps difficult for anyone who cares about the children or their mothers (who many believe are brainwashed from birth) to understand.

But for those of us who choose to become lawyers, these are the easy cases. These are the very people our constitution is designed to protect — the least popular among us, lest they be subjected to the tyranny of the majority.
