Oscar for Iraq war film well-timed

Ed Rollins
CNN Senior Political Contributor

This past weekend, Iraq had a real election and in spite of threats and bombings, millions of voters participated in record numbers. It is a giant step forward in Iraq's road to democracy and has the potential to be a beacon for others in this battle-scarred region.

Even though all the details of the new government will take months to work out, step one, free elections, was a major accomplishment, and the people of Iraq should be very proud. They have paid an enormous price in the deaths and injuries of their fellow citizens and loved ones. Some may never recover from the financial ruin caused by the loss of their homes and destruction of their neighborhoods.

Every citizen has been affected in some way by the last eight years of war. But to many, and especially Iraq's young people, a stable and peaceful future is now a potential reality with their own peacekeepers in place and a functioning government.

Oscars were 'Ladies' Night in a Boys' Town'

Kathryn Bigelow is the first lady to win Best Director at the Academy Awards.
Kathryn Bigelow is the first lady to win Best Director at the Academy Awards.

John Anderson
Special to CNN

When Alec Baldwin closed out the Academy Awards on Sunday night by slapping director Kathryn Bigelow squarely on the backside, that pretty much said it all.

It was Ladies' Night in a Boys' Town.

Yes, the opening routine by Baldwin and Steve Martin was very funny; there was sincerity and genuine gratitude from many of the winners; despite weird digressions into arcane areas like sound recording, the program moved briskly enough.

Oscar Wrap-Up: Why Avatar Lost

Richard Corliss
TIME

All night long, the jokes kept coming on the same subjects: Avatar this, George Clooney that. Sandra Bullock, accepting her award for Best Actress, acknowledged "all the people who didn't" help her, including "George Clooney, who threw me in a pool. I still hold a grudge." Ben Stiller showed up painted like a Na'vi to introduce the makeup category (for which Avatar wasn't nominated), and the Argentine winner of Best Foreign Language Film thanked the Academy "for not considering Na'vi a foreign language."

It's the classic comedy strategy of the have-nots making fun of the haves, and the hoary Oscar tradition of using famous movies and celebrities as the punch lines to jokes understandable to the mass of viewers — most of whom haven't seen, and might not have heard of, the smaller films and actors, who tend to get the awards. Oooh, Avatar, $2.5 billion at the box office ... Heh heh, George Clooney, world's coolest movie star ... Rim shot.

Oscar needs a sense of humor

Elvis Mitchell
Special to CNN

In his poem "Style," Charles Bukowski says that it's better to do a boring thing with style than a dangerous thing without it.

Often, it feels like the Academy Awards manages an odd marriage of both elements: a boring thing without style.

But this year, in going back as old-school as it can - that is, without making the ceremony a drunken, restraint-free luncheon at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel; in other words, the Golden Globes - the Academy has done something to make the Oscars a lot more interesting.

Returning to naming 10 nominees for best picture is a rousingly smart idea, though those sweating through their Harry Winston loans after several hours of what are laughingly called festivities at the awards presentation might not agree.
