Dorner victim wants $1 million reward

A man whose car was stolen by Christopher Dorner says he helped police end the search for the fugitive and wants to collect the reward.

Rick Heltebrake was carjacked at gunpoint by the former LAPD officer on Tuesday shortly before Dorner encountered the police and fled to a nearby cabin where he died. Heltebrake called a friend who is a sheriff's deputy to alert him about the carjacking.

CNN's Randi Kaye asked Heltebrake if he believes he is entitled to the reward although the language stipulated it was to be given for information leading to the capture and conviction of Dorner.

"Did anybody ever believe that he was going to be captured and convicted? I don't think so," he said. "I think they put that in there possibly to have an out for later."

By the conclusion of the manhunt, five people had died, including two police officers. CNN’s Gary Tuchman reports on the battle Tuesday near Big Bear Lake, California, that led to Dorner’s demise. Anderson spoke with Rick Heltebrake, the man who Dorner let go unharmed after stealing his truck to get away from police. Carjacking victim: Dorner was calm

Rick Heltebrake tells Anderson Cooper what happened when fugitive Christopher Dorner took his car at gunpoint on Tuesday.

Heltebrake first noticed a man in the trees with a gun before he realized it was Dorner. "I saw a vehicle crashed in the snow behind him, and he came up to the window of my truck, my driver window, with his gun pointed at me and he said, 'I don't want to hurt you. Just get out, start walking and take your dog," he recounts.

It was apparent to Heltebrake that he was not Dorner's intended target. The wanted former LAPD officer just needed the car. "He looked calm...business like almost."

After a few seconds, Heltebrake says he heard the gunfire exchanged between Dorner and law enforcement. He called the Sheriff's deputy and reported what happened before continuing on to remove himself from the  area.

Dorner's friend: He was fun, intelligent

James Usera describes why Christopher Dorner was well-liked and earned respect from peers when they were college friends at Southern Utah University. He also tells Anderson Cooper why the news about Dorner is so shocking.

"It's indescribable, the sort of emotional roller coaster I've been through the past few days and trying to come to terms with everything that's going on," Usera says about allegations against Dorner and the possibility that the former LAPD officer died in a cabin fire during a standoff with police.

"Chris was a guy who was approachable, had a great sense of humor, fun to be around, intelligent, good conversationalist," says Usera. "The kind of guy most people would want to hang out with and spend time with."
