Why are American students in 36th place?

When it comes to math, science and reading a new study finds students from China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea scored the highest in each subject. American students were all the way down in 36th place. Why is that? What needs to be done to improve American education? Kahn Academy founder Sal Khan joins the AC360 Later panel.

What test is determining the place rank? What students are competing?

Nooo- as a college student, flipping the classroom is the most frustrating classroom-set up ever! It puts us at SUCH a disadvantage, especially for the kids like me who benefit and learn the most from personal teacher-interaction. Some, and I would dare say most, kids do not benefit from teaching themselves! Plus there's the challenge kids face at home, like family issues or no access to a computer or a good one at that, or having to take care of family members, or having to work extensive hours...no, we need better, more creative solutions than flipping a classroom!

Assignments done at home should not depend on the resources of the home.
