Two of the sisters of the driver killed in a hail of gunfire after a high-speed chase from the White House to U.S. Capitol talked exclusively to Anderson Cooper. Miriam Carey’s sisters, Valarie and Amy, both said she did experience post-partum depression with psychosis, but was not battling schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Their sister’s one-year-old daughter was in the car during Thursday’s chase, but was unharmed in the chaos. Both sisters said Miriam was a “nurturing mother” and wonderful person. They also told Anderson they didn’t know she was in Washington and are still in “shock” over the incident. They said they have a lot of questions about what happened to Miriam. A lot of things “just don’t add up,” said Amy. In this exclusive interview, Carey’s sisters share their fond memories of her, give details on her mental state and vow to seek answers to why “she’s not alive to be with her family.”
Watch part two of the interview:
Apparently, there are people who have commented on this article who have a deep rooted hatred for law enforcement. Cops are not paid to get themselves killed. When an officer uses deadly force, it is to protect themselves and others from the threat posed. In this case, a woman with a mental illness rammed a police barricade, led law enforcement on a high speed chase in a heavily populated area full of tourists, and injured at least one officer. Her weapon was her car. The officers should not be exposed to this level of defamation or harassment. Just because some people live in a state of denial does not mean that officers should put themselves in jeopardy.
This is sad I think Ms Carey wasn't taking her meds.
I believe there are additional details that have not been disclosed, as to why an unarmed woman was innocently shot. The authorities could have taken an alternative action to ensure the vehicle was stopped. I send my condolences to her family.
I think it is unconscionable that Miriam was murdered by the D.C. police. It's very sad in a police-state country that is supposedly a Democracy that innocent people are being murdered on a daily basis by government employees such as the police. Very very sad day indeed. These police should be investigated thoroughly and this woman should not have died in vain. The mentally ill have surely been forsaken.
As a person that has suffered from Postpartum Depression and Psychosis my heart breaks for Miriam Carey! It is sad that our society only hears about these disorders when a tragedy happens, such as this! There are so many women that go through this tragic illness, however, are too scared to voice it because our society looks at mental illness in such a poor light! Not to mention it is not even listed in the Diagnostic Manual for Mental Illnesses, so too many women are not even getting properly diagnosed or proper treatment due to this!! I pray for the day that this changes! I feel this could've been avoided and Miriam should still be alive. May she rest in peace and I hope her daughter will later understand why she lost her mother so tragically! :'(
Why is no one questioning the shooting of an unarmed woman? Why is the media calling the officers "heros"???
Five officers discharging their firearms at her is not heroic. Someone needs to investigate.
I have to agree with you. I hope a more complete investigation will be done.
Things don't add up here, why didn't they shoot her tries out when they had her boxed in? Why didn't they? Why did they wait for this person to drive off then shoot with a child in the car? There's lots of question but I don't think we will ever get the true answers.
Concerning what I believe to be the murdered girl by Police in DC, I suspect she had a psychotic reaction to the so- called anti-psychotic drugs she was on. This is not the first time people have gone berzerk on these meds. I suggest you serious find out what she was on and then investigate the consequences of this mind altering concoctions. Of course, the powerful drug companies that supply these drugs to doctors who offen give them to patients for free do not want you to go there.
Meanwhile, I believe most of the United States is now a police state where police are armed to the teeth. I also want to know how many times this woman was shot...also what were the contents of the envelope found at her door. I have lots of questions... but just asking those of doctors, drug companies, and police will sufice for now.
This western shoot-out mentality needs to overhauled by the Justice Department; when the vehicle was cornered at the barrier; a view of the vehicle's interior was visible... surely the child was visible to at least one officer. Deadly force guidelines for public safety organizations is always a last options; as one can tell from the video, deadly force was not the officers final options. I'm challenging "Eric Holder " and the entire justice department should take the lead in this fact-finding mission and release a thorough " Just " report to the family... and since this incident happened in the vicinity of our "Nation's Capital" the author has an invested concerned in this matter.
