Months after the killing of Trayvon Martin, another unarmed black teen is gunned down in Florida. The killing of Jordan Davis has not received the same attention, but the parallels to the Trayvon Martin case are hard to miss. The trial of the man who admits killing Davis, Michael Dunn, is expected to begin in September, and he is also claiming self-defense. Anderson spoke with Davis' parents, Lucia McBath and Jordan Davis. They were joined by their lawyer John Phillips.
According to the article, both men were in their cars. I do not see stand stand your ground here. The man should have just put his car in gear and drove away. Was he trying to express authority or the boys or what? Was he just showing off to someone in the car with him?
The problem with gun control, is not going to be solved taking guns away honest citizens or by penalizing gun makers or ammunition makers. They are not breaking any laws any more than the auto makers. You have the same problem with those who kill with guns, who are unstable as you do with drunk drivers, you can not recognize them until after they commit the crime. With three hundred million people in this country, and the lack of parental and church guidance in this country unfortunately we re going to have this type of crime.
I'm going to reserve judgement until I hear more details of what happened. Is the Stand Your Ground law being used in the defense of this guy? It wasn't in the Trayvon case, despite all the discussion around it.
There is absolutely no need for Stand Your Ground. Self defence laws already exist. Stand your grown allows people
to kill someone with no need to use reasonable judgement whether it is necessary or not. It was introduced by ALEC, backed by the NRA, paid for by both organizations that lined the pockets of the legislatures that proposed it and later passed it. In other words, YOU GET TO USE YOUR GUN MORE. Yippy for the gun manufacturers and bullet manufacturers. Bad for everyone else.
I don't know much of the details of this case except as presented by the parents, but if the facts support the case presented by the parents then a stand your ground case will not fly for the shooter. If the facts show there was no REASONABLE fear by the shooter the defense will not be sustained. Defendants claim innocence all the time, but that does not always lead to acquittal. Defendants plead not guilty by reason of mental defect but that does not always to an acquittal. The same reasoning should apply to STAND YOUR GROUND. It is a valid defense in some cases but not the get out of jail free card that opponents try to tag it with.
But he was black, his killer was white and it's in Florida, get it?
There is just Too Much Violence in society, and unfortunately and sadly to say we have been accustomed to it, I mean, I'm not that old, but I can remember a crime or something bad happen in our cities it was featured on the front page of a newspaper, and that was all we talked about it for days, NOW its an everyday occurrence. I feel that
we really need to place a MACK on every Street like in the old days!
Remember, GeorgeZimmerman probably would not have been out patrolling his neighborhood that night if it had not. Beenfor what Shawn Tyson did to those two British tourists several months before, in a town not too far away.
I am an African and my take in all these violence in America are not necessarily all due racial profiling. The way we bring up our kids determines the direction their lives will take in the future. I am not in any way discrediting any case or determination that has been drawn but I am just a sober observer.
We all know what goes on when teens are together with their parents car. They can challenge anyone on their path and get away with it. I do not support killing but I wish the government can lower legal age to 14 years from 18. This will dater these young from committing a crime and getting sued as kids but adults. This will make parents advice their children to be disciplined and respect their elders as they go about their business. If it is turning down the music, this guy never asked for their radio but he just requested them to turn down not off the music but they hurled curses on him.
At this point, a man makes decision either walk away or fight. You know how these kids are....however deep we bury our heads in the sand, our society needs mending and not bashing.
Mike, it's not about racial profiling it's identifying what is perceived to be a danger, threat or someone who may be involved in criminal activity. We all grew up knowing who the unlawful, bullies and no good individuals in our communities were. We learned who they were, what characteristics to be aware of and how far to stay away from them. You remember the individuals that you had to be weary of to this very day. Now that you're a father there are particular people that you will invite over to your house and others that you'll make sure your children do not become involved with because of what they may get your children into. Telling our children is one thing peer pressure and their everyday environment is the area that needs to be changed.
