There are about 40,000 illegally owned guns in California. They're owned by people from all walks of life who have been ordered to turn in their firearms for a number of different reasons, but they haven’t come forward. So special agents from California's Justice Department’s Bureau of Firearms are going after them to seize the weapons.
California tracks gun owners who have convictions using a database system that’s unique to the state. It’s helped them confiscate thousands of guns. CNN’s Randi Kaye saw firsthand how law enforcement uses the program to find and seize illegal firearms.
You can see Randi’s report at 8 and 10 p.m. ET, plus Anderson interviews California Attorney General Kamala Harris and Aurora shooting victim Stephen Barton who works for the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
UPDATE Watch Randi's report:
Every discussion seems to be about "illegal" weapons and criminals. It is NOT the criminal that is committing the massacres that we have been experiencing recently. And the weapons were already in their posession or in posession of family members and legally obtained. So all this talk of background checks and criminals is side tracking the real issue that weapons in the hands of erratic persons are dangerous even if perfectly legal. Where does that leave us? Even our former military who all possess weapons and suffer from Post Traumatic Stress are committing these heinous acts. As a person who absolutely hates guns, I feel gun owners need psychiatric evaluations and if they cannon pass the test the guns need to be confiscated by law. Sorry, but lives are at stake.
One question I might ask is how many of these guns legally bought buy someone that was not a felon. Who is now a felon use these guns to commit crimes? Also what kinds of guns do these folks have? One last question i might ask is that firearms have been around for a couple of hundred years and these random shootings have been happening for only 20 plus years. So are firearms the issue or is something else. Ie: Dr. Prescribed medicine?
California has a bigger problem is the gangs having guns but law enforcement can not search them at will. they have guns on them and any gang member will have a weapon of any sort next or on them at all times. Law enforcement will go after persons that the police know they can not have a weapons. This will justify the agents funding, but the real threat lives next to you and me. We should take a stand against gangs and force them by guns from towns.
In reference to the story about the guns being retrieved in California. What do they do with the guns after retrieved? Some states then resell them at auctions, then back out on the streets!
The California Gun Law could be a great way to remove illegal guns from America. The problem is that no one asks why there are so many names being added to the list every day. I mean, if you were in a fist fight before, and arrested, does that constitute as a violent crime? If so, is it right that you then lose the right to bear arms and protect yourself? I just worry that if people adopt the way Ca does this, what's to stop the government from creating more and more ways to become a "violent offender" so they can remove our guns. This could be a very slippery slope.
A felon or mentally Ill yes by all means but not a misdemeanor.
the next time you have a conversation with someone saying that people can go to another state to purchase a gun from a gun store and bring it into their state, ask them this question; how is that possible, because in order to buy a gun at a gun store and pass the federal background check, the person is required to produce a legal piece of paper –IE- Driver’s license, state ID or a utility bill showing their name and address of that state.
So if I go to another state I can’t buy a gun since I don’t have the required ID’s showing I live in that state. All this talk about going to another state to buy a gun at a gun store is a sham by all of the assault weapons ban proponents. Also and just as important, the name assault weapon should be called a personal defense weapon instead; at least that’s what the home land security is calling them now.
I really enjoyed your program last week where you had the round table with the audience, great work.

Why not discuss the timing of the gun confiscation???? The guns need to be surrendered at the time of the felony conviction with almost no cost to the state versus tracking down known felon's guns AFTER they are released. Let's be smart here!!
People need to read the Constitution, the bill of rights, the Dick Act of 1902, The Declaration of Independence and the Magna Carta. Every person in this country has a right to bear arms, every person in this country has the right to protect their person, their family and their property. The police cannot protect you, the police will not protect you. The second amendment is untouchable, it cannot be changed or repealed without, passing ex post facto law, whic violates the constitution of the United States! The 2nd amendment; A well rgulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed. The 2nd amendment does not exclude anyone for any reason an in effect states that anyone that can afford to buy a gun has a right to possess that gun!
Last week a student was arrested in our area for trying to sell his hand gun in his school. He was caught and arrested but his comments after his arrest was disturbing. He stated he never could sell his gun to anybody at his school because, they already had one of their own. We heard this news report and was lost for words. Guess these days nothing is surprising when it comes to weapons with the youth of today.
Anderson Cooper goes beyond the headlines to tell stories from many points of view, so you can make up your own mind about the news. Tune in weeknights at 8 and 10 ET on CNN.
