Both the gun lobby and those who want tight regulations use inconclusive data to support their cause. Anderson Cooper is Keeping Them Honest.
Between 1999-2010, Broward County, FL had a firearm assault mortality rate of 30 per 100,000 black youth ages 15 to 24 years (in contrast to Orleans Parrish, LA's 300 per 100,000). Broward also had a rate of 5 per 100,000 white youth ages 15 to 24 years (in contrast to Monterey County, CA's 40 per 100,000). Maybe, whatever it is that lowers firearm assault in this most vulnerable age group has already been figured out in Fort Lauderdale. Even if there are strict gun laws in Fort Lauderdale (and I don't know if there are) the real answer may also relate to why the community accepts whatever controls exist. If anyone wants to check these numbers, they can be found in the Detailed Mortality File on CDC WONDER, the CDC's public internet web site. Instead of speculating about what will or will not work, why not ask people in more successful communities what they are already doing and why they are doing it?
Gun cotrole is very simple. make everyone who owns a gun secure their wepons. if every person was made to have a gun safe with a stiff penalty to the individual owner if your guns were easily stolen half the gun crime would not exist
Regarding the Gun debate: Blaming inanimate guns for the violence that has recently occurred is like blaming Women when they are raped for being attractive and bringing it on themselves. The perpetrator will use a car, a fertilizer bomb or any means at hand when that internal trigger is fired. No one can legislate for "evil". It occurs in so many random ways that the next event cannot be foreseen / cannot be regulated and sadly will never be stopped in this new society we live in...
