Tonight on AC360: Baby Audrina defies the odds

The odds were stacked against Baby Audrina. She had open heart surgery the day after being born, because she was born with part of her heart beating outside of her chest.  Audrina has a rare birth defect called ‘ectopia cordis’ where the heart is abnormally located either partially or totally outside the chest.

Audrina’s mother, Ashley Cardenas, first found out her baby would have this condition during a sonogram when she was 16 weeks pregnant.  Ashley decided to fight the odds. “After my doctors explained just how sick my baby was and what options I had, it didn't matter how scared I was, I knew I had to do anything possible to save my daughter’s life,” the new mom told Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, where baby Audrina had the surgery.

The 3-month-old girl is finally home with her parents and older siblings.  Dr. Sanjay Gupta talks to Anderson tonight about Audrina’s rare condition, and what challenges she may face as she grows older. Tune in at 8 and 10 p.m. ET.
