A crisis counselor met with teachers in Newtown, Connecticut. He advises it's okay to show emotion in front of students.
God bless Anderson Cooper...but now it's time to hear names other than the 20 children and their teachers. Let's hear the names of the US Senators who received an A rating from the NRA but refuse to take a stand for gun control. I tried in vain to find those cowards on the NRA site. WHO ARE THEY??????
I work in Newtown. I walked from 84 to the firehouse today. i saw the memorials..heard the folks hushed conversations and i saw a pal whio is a volunteer fireman at sandy hook.
I hope we carry on ..hug the grieving and do what we can to avoid more tragedies.
All that said, Newtown was the home to a state mental institution. My mom is 94 years old and a retired nurse. She served in the navy during ww2 and ended her nursing career running a nursing home in Newtown. She has told us about her days in the war and her training in the late 30's to become a nurse. She spent 6 months in training at a state instituion for the mentally disturbed in New York State. She told us the hospital was bursting at the seams, and folks with real problems were being released for lack of space. There were 170 million Americans in those days.
We have over 300 million Americans today and because we are broke we have closed facilities like the state hospital in Newtown. There are another third, based on percentages, of folks who need help. These folks are on the streets as homeless, in shelters , or just lost in the system. And, some are Adam Lanza. We need to figure out how to identify these folks and get them the help they need or find a place for them to be where they can't hurt themselves or anyone else.
I just listened to a reporter, a woman, on your show, talking about how the mother of the Ct. shooter "with Aspergers" had left him alone. Damn it, will you stop compounding this tragedy by labeling Aspies?? My son has Aspergers. When i go out of town, he goes to work as usual, cooks and feeds himself, keeps up the house and takes care of the family pets. You are creating another tragedy out of the one of last Friday.
My heart and prayers go to the families of Newtown. While watching I appreciate the fact that your telecasts have given privacy to the families and treating them with respect. I am extremely upset to have heard that people have been putting up false websites on the premise of obtaining funds and these people should be arrested. It was also sickening to see those people in Georgia and quite sure around the country hurring up to buy more assault rifles, as one is not enough, before any laws change. The problem is in each case is an individual or individuals who became evil and even though scientists will try to prove cause and all will try putting blame, the blame is to the evil of the person who pulls the trigger and hopefully does not portray him in any sympathetic light and agree that the names we remember are the victims. I live in Canada and I have never understood the concept of owning guns..society as a whole is breaking down. Sympathy should go to the victims and never the killer.
certainly a police officer who is fully trained can be assigned to be in a school in any neighborhood and there will be no need to train teachers or school staff...also..we the taxpayers will gladly pay the cost for one police officer for each school in america. problem solved quickly and easily.
When are the people in this country look at the back story' We are inundated with all these games that instill hatred and the desire to kill in our children. We are polluted with news and video from the Middle East and the latest "lone person who is strapped with a bomb and sent into a crowded restaurant or Mall and they pull a pin because they are the
"martyr" they will be remembered for being the person to kill 49 people or 35 school children because he went in all
by hisself and "pull the pin"or the trigger. When we take responsibility as parents for what our children see and how many times they see it, our children will continue to grow up with this insane desire to hurt people.
News/Media suppliers need to take responsiblity for what they show. Parents need to take responsiblity for the games
the children play on the computer, x-box or whereever. Parents are responsible for the "outcome". How the children are
being raised has a lot to do with "outcome". Parents are responsible for that "viable human being and they contribution they make to society. I don't want to be in Nancy Lanza's position even though she is gone, she will be remembered for not doing enough to find the services her son needed. She was alone, The ex-Husband should have been there to help that boy. But he wasn't. When a child tells a parent they don't want to have anything to do with them, there is a mental
illness lurking in the background. The parents are clean, not an addict hooked on illegal substances, then the
son should have been helped by both parents and they should have found the services that are needed.
27 people should not have died because Mental Health services were scarce.
Governor Rick Perry of Texas answer to shootings in school is to arm the teachers. Question for you Rick... "what actions by a stranger, or a student, in Ttexas schools would justify shooting them?"
Anderson Cooper goes beyond the headlines to tell stories from many points of view, so you can make up your own mind about the news. Tune in weeknights at 8 and 10 ET on CNN.
