Reporter's Note: President Obama has been re-elected and that has made some people feel like leaving the country. It has not, however, made me feel like giving up this relentless campaign of letter writing.
Dear Mr. President,
Perhaps you have heard the news that some of our fellow citizens (actually a fair share of thousands) have launched campaigns to secede from the union. As best I can make out they are genuinely upset about the course of the most recent election, vis à vis you holding onto the Oval Office, and they have hit upon the notion of fleeing.
Absent the ability to simply saw their counties free of the continent and drift away (although who knows where?) they have chosen a more pedestrian form of political divorce.
And yet despite the seemingly dire possibility of a rapidly rising New Republic of Texas, or the appearance of an Oregonania, or the United States of Alamissorgia, I don't think you have cause for concern. People always get upset when a hard fought contest ends against them, especially in politics. After all, when you think about it, it is rather painful to find that your vision of what a goverment is and ought to be is not the majority's feeling. In effect, I imagine it can make many people feel as if they have already lost touch with the country they knew, so why not just form a new one?
Give them time. Despite all the furor, most Americans have a way of coming around. Oh sure, many will never like you, but they will decide they like the rest of the nation enough to stay around and keep fighting for their vision of it..rather than waste any more time fleeing yours.
