Mitt Romney makes headlines for suggesting a hospital emergency room is where uninsured Americans can get the care they need. Keeping Them Honest, that pricey option contradicts the message in the health care reform Romney got passed when governor of Massachusetts.
Care in the Hospital Emergency Department is NOT free. After my recent visit at a public hospital I was directed to the final station where I was asked to pay $500+. They charge, and if you don't have the money or insurance, they will try to collect. At first I was told "We don't deal with insurance" but they did when I said all I was paying was my ER copay. It is true that ER's end up having to write off huge amounts meaning that a lot of care is delivered there at no cost to the patient, but they are not organized and do not operate as a free service.
This video is so misleading... He basically said if someone has a heart attack we won't leave them to die, they are taken to the ER. The interviewer "that's expensive" R U KIDDING ME!? He wasn't saying to use theER as a clinic. The example he used was a guy having a heart attack! The ER is THE only option with a heart attack. I guess the dems think the guy should set up an appt for his doc as soon as he can get in... He in no way says he supports abuse of the ER. His point was it should be up to the states how they do their own healthcare... If u don't like the way your state does health care, MOVE!
