Jason Puracal, a 35-year old native of Washington State, is fighting a 22-year drug sentence in Nicaragua. He’s been held there on drug charges for 18-months. Jason addressed the court today as he fights for freedom. CNN's Miguel Marquez attended Puracal's appeal hearing and spoke to family members.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone at the Anderson Cooper 360 show for covering Jason's case. Thank you Miguel Marquez for covering the appeal hearings in person.
As one of Jason's lifelong friends, I can vouch for his character. Jason is in an innocent man and it is shameful that the Nicaraguan police arrested him in the first place on trumped up drug charges. Worse still was the railroading he got at trial and that the un-licensed judge (who has since fled the country) sentenced him. The appellate panel must do the right thing, there is no evidence.
Here's hoping that Jason will be re-united with his wife and son this week!
This is crazy. Eric Voltz was guilty of murder and got away with it. They lied, twisted evidence and paid witnesses off to testify for him. If he was ever stupid enough to return for a retrial it would be much different. Jason is innocent of money laundering and is not free. He isn't charged with killing anyone. They didn't have a shred of evidence he laundered money. He's a real estate agent doing well in a prosperous area. I know Voltz is a creepy, POS with resources. Jason a peaceful, family guy lacking political pull. As a US Citizen I am pissed. I feel the US got one pass and it was given to the highest bidder.
Anderson Cooper goes beyond the headlines to tell stories from many points of view, so you can make up your own mind about the news. Tune in weeknights at 8 and 10 ET on CNN.
