AC360's Elizabeth Cohen reports on California's history of forced sterilizations and its reluctance to pay reparations to the victims.
It also happened in Puerto Rico...
In regard to compensation to those victims of forced sterilization, I do not feel that current taxpayers should have to pay for the wrongs done by the state over 60 years ago. How is this fair? And what is the point? Money is not going to be able to correct any of the wrongs done to them. And all the survivors are most likely receiving Medicare, so they are being treated equally now. This practice was stopped many years ago, and the laws were changed. That is the correction that was needed. I think the formal apology is the appropriate response. Stop making the hard-working people pay for things that they weren't responsible for.
I never heard that this happened before, how shocking! I truly feel for the people involved in getting sterilized. They should be heard and compensated.
