Trump claims Obama birth certificate 'missing'

Editor's note: Tune in to AC360° Tuesday beginning at 10 p.m. ET to see the remainder of Gary Tuchman's investigation into President Barack Obama's birthplace. Tuchman speaks with Hawaii’s Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie who says he knew Obama’s parents decades ago. Abercrombie weighs in on the controversy over Obama’s birthplace and explains why he has not released Obama’s birth certificate like he said he would.

(CNN) – Real estate mogul Donald Trump's latest claim about President Obama's birth certificate is that it's missing.

"Well I've been told very recently, Anderson, that the birth certificate is missing," Trump told CNN's Anderson Cooper Monday. "I've been told that it's not there or it doesn't exist. And if that's the case it's a big problem."

When asked from whom he received the information, Trump said he didn't want to say and that he feels bad about the situation.

"I'd love for him to produce his birth certificate so that you can fight one-on-one," Trump said in an interview set to air Monday. "If you look at what he's doing to fuel prices, you can do a great fight one-on-one, you don't need this issue."

CNN's Gary Tuchman also interviewed the former director of the Hawaii Department of Health, who said she has seen the original birth certificate in the vault at the Department of Health.

In 2008, the Obama campaign released an official document called a "certification of live birth" which indicates he was born in Hawaii. This document, which is a computerized abstract of his birth information that the State of Hawaii issues to individuals requesting their birth records, satisfies proof-of-birth requirements for various federal matters, including obtaining a passport. Several news organizations as well as the Annenberg Fact Check Project viewed the document first-hand and verified that it contained the official raised seal as well as a signature stamp of the state registrar.

Trump has made national headlines by questioning the president's birthplace, even saying he has hired investigators in Hawaii to examine the situation. The reality TV star is mulling a bid for the White House and expects to make a final decision at the end of May, after the latest season of "Celebrity Apprentice" concludes.

LOL Anderson lies right out of the gate and says, " Here is Obama's Certificate of Live Birth" while showing the "Certification of Live birth." Seriously Anderson, Americans are smarter than that.

Trump knows that as long as he plays up this birther business he has the media's attention–and that of all the crack-pots. Once he declares that "his investigators" have established the truth–that Obama was born in Hawaii–he will get kicked to the curb.

Donald, even if you repeat it often enough (common Republican strategy) that doesn't make it true. Keep playing to the conserative extremists and you lose the rest of the country. You have made your choice.

When a "candidate" for public office says something as absurd as Trump's claim about a "missing" birth certificate, the media train needs to leave him behind. The certificate has been examined by multiple reliable sources. No more free press. He is not a serious candidate. He is not a serious human being. The man ought not to be not questioned about his belief, but ridiculed for it. He should be laughed out of the room. The only way he could appear more ridiculous is if he were to suggest that Obama has not "proved" he is not from Mars. And I'm not even an Obama supporter!

Anderson, please tell mr trump that, there are more important stuff to worry about than this birth certificant thing, look at the price of gas now, ecomony and so many issues to worry. The housing market is still weak and being a real estate person, he should focus more on that.

Donald Trump is a personality, a showman and a business man. I once found him interesting and entertaining. However, his involvement in the "birther" business against the President has shown me a side of Mr. Trump that I find totally disgusting. Now he is saying the President's birth certificate is missing. Is there no end to the actions of this total ego-manic? I have written him off as someone I care not to see or hear.

I don't think Trump is actually stupid enough to believe the "birther" nonsense. So logically, he is a complete and total hypocrite.
In any case, he is definitely not presidential material. Not even for president of the local PTA.

It is amazing that CNN would be giving any more air time to Donald Trump's investigation. Although it is quite understanding that journalists should be presenting all sides of any given story, it still appears to me the public has the right to hear about important national and international events. Please ignore the persona who is just trying to boost his popularity by playing into these "fear and conspiracy" stories.

Donald Trump needs to worry about proving why he would make a good choice for president, and stop worrying about whether or not Obama was born in the US. I don't care if you can prove if Obama was born in the US or not. Can you prove you would be a good president if you had to opportunity to replace Obmam?

What's missing is Trump's ability recognize a good hairstyle. I mean, nevermind the numerous bankrupties and the five kids from three wives and all the infidelity, does he really think the country will elect someone with that 'do president. Talk about bad judgement!

I'm confused – just what is Obama "doing" to fuel prices? Last I checked, fuel prices were being driven up by Trumps rich friends who speculate in the markets and the relationship between supply and demand no longer applies. As for the birth certificate you idiot PRESIDENT OBAMA met the requirements. Shut up, move on, and try to actually talk about something real instead of engaging in the typical Republican trickery of inciting people to jump to incorrect conclusions based on using words you know have that effect. And, Mr. Chump – pay your bills instead of making a deal and then going back on your word. Some of us who know you in real life know what a piece of garbage you really are. Oh and lastly – do we REALLY want a guy who's success came from his daddy's money AND who went BANKRUPT to be our President? I think not.

First I'd like to know how someone got into the files in Hawaii and saw the birth certificate missing. If the republicans can't even believe a fellow republican, the ex-governor of Hawaii who verified she saw it and it was the one posted on the internet, than I guess they are going to believe the one they want to. Someone who says it's not there. The people who mess their pants and say Obama was not born in the USA will believe exactly what they want to.

Maybe we should all go to a website that has a picture of the certificate posted, download a copy and just mail it to Trump. And ask him if he has enough money to buy a pair of glasses if he can't see the originality of it. He has gone bankrupt so many times and is not as rich as he says he is. But then tea bags and republicans don't measure the character and compassion of a person, what they think is SWELL ABOUT SOME ONE is if the have money, are dishonest, greedy and a false Christian. Seems like Trump fits the bill, as does all republicans and tea bags you see spewing trash on TV.

Not appropriate to reveal his sources? At what point does this garbage become treason? Opposing the opposite side is one thing. Desecrating them, slandering them, and trying desperatly I might add to destroy their career....that is something completely different than opposition. This is libel and slander at the very least!

If Trump wants to fight Obama one on one on the important issues, then why doesn't he? Trump is the guy making this an issue.
Has anyone notice how Republicans are anti-democratic when elections doesn't go their way? Bill Clinton won in '92 and '96, and they tried to impeach him. Gore actually won in 2000, but the important thing was that thousands of potential Gore voters were physically turned away from the ballot box in Florida (forget the chad issue), and now that Obama beat McCain, Republicans are trying to overturn that election with this stupid birth issue.
Republicans are suppose to respect the will of the American people, but they're just hypocritical.

And why doesn't he produce his "long-form" birth certificate? He shouldn't have to, but why not just do it? End this nonsense right now. Like the State of Hawaii would refuse a presidential request to show the document? If nothing else, I'm tired of this being a news item. Just show the stupid document.

Donald Trump is a political opportunist and a liar. As Americans we should not tolerate his flagrant attempt to cultivate his brand at the expense of an American president. If he cannot cite his sources he should remain silent – as anyone with the least bit of decency and respect would do. CNN should not even report what this man does – its an affront to journalism.

CNN continues to say that Trump says he's done talking about Obama's real birth certificate, but you are the only ones continueing to publicize this. Maybe if you stopped trying to dirty an honest American's name you we could move on. CNN is turning this into a race thing by helping to cover up the truth. CNN, the inquirer makes better sense than you do, shame on you.

The Dr. that delivered Obama could testify before the grand jury, and Trump would not give the testimony, or the witness any credibility. Trump just thinks he owns the world. In reality, he does not, and therefore, Obama does not need to give his accusations his time or attention. America is broken, unemployed, and hungry, things Trump just doesn't really care about, as he has never personally faced these obstacles. Let the rug babble, let him spend his bankrupt millions on his grand conspiracy theory, and in time, he will crawl back under the rock, from which he came. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!

I never saw my birth certificate until I was 18. I needed a passport at that time, my parents could find it so I ordered it from the state / county where I was born. It was good enough to get me a passport and I suspect it would be good enough if I ever ran for president. Then again, I'm a white guy who doesn't have a vaguely "foreign sounding" name, so I'm sure many wouldn't find it an issue. It's the issue of race that remains at the center of this nonsense. Is Trump racist? I truly have no idea; he's clearly jumping on this birth certificate bandwagon to sell himself even more.

Trump is nothing but a circus style self-promoter. He's "heard" things? How long is his charade of running for president going to go on? His biggest idea is to add a multi-million dollar ballroom to the White House – that's a politician who has his priorities for the people of the nation in the right place.

Give it a rest Trump...either produce the evidence to back up your theory or let it go. If Obama is doing such a crappy job as President then you should have nothing to worry about in 2012. You look more like a "bully" than a potential candidate for the White House and the Republicans will abandoned you like rats from a sinking ship. Enough already!

This guy is turning the GOP presidential run-up into a circus, and he's turning the 2012 race into a debate about Obama's birth, something that makes the Dems very happy. Conservatives should be up in arms because this guys is playing them for ratings and at the same time making the GOP look foolish. He could cost them the 2012 race.

I almost cannot believe the extemes that Trump will go to in this matter. He knows that President Obama cannot release his original birth certificate because Hawaii will not allow that by state law. It is a document that only the person it pertains to can read, but not request for publishing. Why doesn't Donald ask another citizen of Hawaii to produce that document to prove President Obama is being evasive? He can't, because no citizen can produce what birthers want. Please, just stop the insanity, use logic and then you too will have been freed from the crazy that is Trump.
