Sarah Palin's "Sputnik Moment": Join the Live Chat

Sarah Palin takes aim at President Obama's State of the Union address and hits the old Soviet Union instead.
Pres. Obama called this our "Sputnik moment." She says launching sputnik ended up bankrupting the USSR.
Does she have her facts straight? We're keeping her honest. Plus, the congressman who's causing an uproar over his feedback on the State of the Union address and more.

Soledad, Bravo to you and your team for the framing and coverage of the (apparently disproportionate) felony verdict levied against the mother in Ohio. I appreciated hearing both the panel's take on the apparent legal & educational/sociological missteps and your framing (and I hope others also were open to hearing those comments).

There is little doubt that the US left want bigger government, more regulation, and more government control. At a minimum that is economic statism.

Well, if Taco Bell is 100 percent beef how about you give the state of Arakansa the ingredient and then we will see if there is beef in this. How is the beef seasoned. Where is the beef and I am picky about what I want in my taco, burrito, and other things taco-related. Where is beef? Where is meat? Where is the jerky?

Good night everyone. Sleep well and stay safe. Taco Bell tastes pretty good and is somewhat addictive. I know people who eat it 3 or 4 times a week. I might have to get in the car for a late night snack.

Of course every government practices socialism.
The question is to what degree. By any international comparison Obama is far to the right wing of the socialist continuum.
There is no equivalent to the GOP as a major party in any democracy.

    @CHARLIE,
I know...In the US, politicians on the right use the word, "socialism" to scare the public & it works.

The mystery of all the dead birds continues. You mean all those birds "hit something"? What did they hit? There were hundreds of them in different locations.

I know. As a european that certainly looks strange. It is because the right have done such good scare propagande that the left have no hope of overcoming it.

While the historical mistake is unsettling, I think the bigger problem here is why she didn't support the comment, and I'd like to know it. I know that former Governor Palin and President Obama have many differences, but a challenge to America to do better seems a fundamental principle which we have always followed. Why is she hesitant to support a call to invigorate our spirits?

That was such a shocking story re. the mother who was put in jail for sending her child to a different school...

    January 27, 2011 at 10:50 pm |
  16. Helen

The mother who send her children to a better schools does not deserved to be jailed. All she is trying to was to give her chidren a better future for a good education. The school system has no right to put her in jail. If the school is not providing a child with an aduquede education, the parents have a right to take the child out of a school, and transferred them in another school that has a good education that can provide better opportunities for them. The punishment does not fit the crime. The school system needs to be taken to court and tried for what they had done to this woman and her children. The school board need a refresher on "Brown V. Board of Education (1954)" and the four cases that led to groundbreaking landmark in education.

Sarah doesn't seem to understand what the President was talking about with the "Sputnik moment"...that little Soviet satellite shook us out of our complacency and as a result improved our economy and our educational system. We need another such moment now. I'm am sad that Sarah doesn't understand that. Obama wasn't praising the Soviet Union for their accomplishment, he was praising the US for accepting the challenge to be greater than we were. We pulled out all the stops, created jobs, confirmed our standing in the world as a leader in science and technology and landed a man on the moon within 10 yrs.

In response to the Georgia representative saying Obama was against the Constitution because he is a socialist. First, Obama is not a socialist. Second, the Constitution describes a political system (Democracy), not an economic system. It says nothing about capitalism, socialism, communism or any other economic system. Third, Obama was a professor of Consitutional law. He knows the Constitution far better than that man, who seems to me rather ignorant.

I was shocked when I heard about this woman being jailed. Don't even ask me if we thought about doing the same thing in my family. We didn't do it but we talked about it. Parents get VERY concerned about a good school for their child. I feel for this woman. Look at criminals roaming the street and this woman is in jail.

    @ Emily
Only in the US is socialism a dirty word.
In Europe it simply describes the left as compared to capitalism on the right. Each countyr has a balance of the two. The extremes are communism on the left and corporatism (as in the US) on the right.

In the crisis that happen in Tunisa, Algeria, Egypt, and now in Yemin, all the people want is freedom especially the younger generation. They are sick and tired in living an autocratic/totalitarian regime where they have to do what the governments says. There is no democracy and now the people are speaking out to change the government, ask for democracy, and demanding core needs for the people. The leaders in those countries need to listen to what the people want and give them what they want. What I had heard on television and read in newspapers, signals me that the the people in those countries want freedom. They want freedom and they want to have rights and democracy. Let the people have what they want. A change and a revolution is coming.

According to the description in my Webster's dictionary; Any government that provides a road without chargng a toll that makes a profit for private industry is socialist.

If it is attention that Gov. Palin is seeking then she has been successful is doing that. I was surprise that a person who is seeking to become the President of the United States would put herself in position of limited knowledge and poor fact finding. How does this help the Repulican Party? Who is Gov. Palin representing that they would support this type of attention getting? Good luck Gov. Palin in your race to the White House.

like always must people miss the boat with these two women. They are changing the game the rules and the players. We need their vison if we are to protect this country, it's people and our most unique way of life. I do not want them to run for political office because what they are doing now is far more important then running for office. Those that feel that these women are missing the point. Time is the teller of all truth that is what will determine
    the real airheads.

Mike-Las Vegas, as I said, 'statism' is the proper word to describe Obama. Otherwise known as 'state capitalism' or the concept of a highly-regulated market economy with large amounts of government intervention.

The DEMs should be very concerned about the Palin effect because compared to her even extreme right wing GOP candidates seem moderate and intelligent. left leaning republicans will end up voting for extreme right candidates thinking they are taking a middle road.

Why is calling President Obama a "socialist" considered an insult? Having a social consciousness is a compliment in almost every country in the developed world.

ok. Rep Braun is not thinking straight. I mean really. How can President Obama be a socialist? President Obama does not control what goods the American people can buy, what the American people can eat, what jobs people should be doing, how much our incomes are, what type of education should the people be getting, what type of houses people live in and so forth. There is no evidence of President Obama's being a socialist. Obama believes in the Consitution of the United States and what the "framers" (founded fathers) intended to do when creating a nation to come together in unity and in establishing a government and democracy. What Rep. Braun is saying is asburd, dude check your facts, you are not thinking clearly.
