Amazon Backlash: Join the Live Chat

Tonight, peddling pedophilia. The nations largest online retailer, amazon.com is slowly take down more disgusting material for sale on its site. Not just books, but videos as well. Why is it taking them so long?
And how did this stuff get on their site in the first place? We're keeping them honest. Plus, tonight's other headlines.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

I debated the freedom of speech issue with a colleague today. Anyone who doubts, do your own search. We found books on sex slavery (tagged as "erotica") and other salacious material as it relates to young girls. It clearly violates Amazon's own selling guidelines.

So, who does not sell this 'literature'? Whoever doesn't will be getting my business

    @VinceB,
Well, everyone would have bought that book online so some law enforcement entity should be able to do so, as there would be a mail-list. (just typing this is sick! I can't believe that people would want to read such sick-materials that they would actually PAY for it?!)

No one should ever profit from selling such materials. No one.

A BIG Thank You to the panel!

I am glad to hear from Somebody that 1st ammendment rights could NOT exonerate Amazon from this clearly pedphile material.
Obviously, as several bloggers have already nited, there was no "scanning" or monitoring of of their prodocts.

I suspect that Amazon is going to lose a lot of money (right around the Holidays).

@Nancy in Oregon – yes, in fact, it is not as if they did it by mistake. They have revealed how truly devoid of conscience the corporate greed is.
And, then we have these corporations being treated on-par with humans by our courts.. This goes PREFERENTIAL treatment. Even humans would not be allowed to peddle stuff like that in our library.

it is disturbing that there is a demand for these materials – making the materials more difficult to access is a good beginning but only a beginning

The good thing about all of this, is that they will now be required to monitor more closely what they sell. I think that will set a precedent for other book stores/outlets.

I think some law enforcement entity should investigate anyone who bought that "Pedding Pedophilla" book?

We need the media to put it out on the forefront and not be silent!

    November 12, 2010 at 10:08 pm |
  13. Sue from Syracuse

Yes, it does sound like the book is obscene. Amazon ought to be held responsible for promoting obscenity. Not only have they put it out, they have KNOWN about it. They have received complaints... They should be held accountable.
Federal law should start to exercise its BIG TEETH and protect our innocent.

When did society sink this LOW that it was okay to be selling "pro-pedophilia" material? At one time, it would never have been thought of...

It is, isn't it, Sue from Syracuse? I had no idea they were so devoid of ethical judgment.
    I feel let down.

I think Amazon should be held up as an example if some AG wants to take them on. It would make these other internet retailers think twice about the junk they have out there. Clean up the net.

It is really sad when people abuse the first amendment with things like pedophilia how-to guides

What is worse is children in school can access Amazon - it is not a prohibited website.

They have no self-audit process? Do they have no moral standards? It is really shocking.

    November 12, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  22. Janis

I guess something has to threaten Amazon's bottom line before they do anything.

    November 12, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  23. Emily

    @Starr,
"I just received an advertisement from Amazon"
Are they looking to give you a discount? Sales on items? I have to wonder just how long people will infact protest Amazon.

    November 12, 2010 at 10:05 pm |
  24. Lori

Don't you just assume that someone at Amazon is reviewing the advertisements?

Amazon isn't the only company selling pedophilia books and profiting from them. Barnes and Noble and Borders are as well. If a predator "gains" something from one of these books, harms a child, then the store that sold it should be charged with aiding in the abuse. I'm disgusted at the lack of corporate responsibility, morale, and compassion. They are failing to protect our children. Anderson, please continue to keep them honest.

I'm just so sad about Amazon. It has been so wonderful for me to use. I cannot use it in good conscience now. It's a form of grief that I feel, I have to admit. Disillusioned.

I think Amazon is pulling a play from the craigslist playbook, they claim they scan things when they really do not

Good evening Anderson and everyone. TGIF. I am visiting family in Tennessee and they are all aware of the Amazon stuff and are boycotting them until these issues are resolved. All of us were very big customers, especially at Christmas or anything for the kids. I heard they have had over 3,000 emails, probably more after today, and many people have cancelled their accounts.

Is Amazon still selling all that trash? Bad. OMG! The videos. I guess you have to call their attention to all the trash they have on their own site. Trust, I think not.

If Amazon.com has a policy not to sell 'porn', just how did "pro-pedophilia" material get on there? Why when people complain, is something not done, or even before? Is the $ worth that much?
