Should Mich. Asst. AG Be Fired?: Join the Live Chat

Tonight, that law enforcement official who's targeting a college student in his spare time - singling him out for a campaign of vitriol and online attacks. New developments tonight, and the same question people keep asking us:  Why hasn't his boss fired him? We'll put that question to his boss - the Attorney General of Michigan. We're  keeping them honest. Plus, tonight's other headlines.

Want more details on what covering? Read EVENING BUZZ

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

Isn't there a law that says that public officials are held to different laws when it comes to things like conduct unbecoming?

How can Attorney General Cox keep an assistant that he deems immature in such an important role in his office? Furthermore, how can he not consider his employee's more disturbing than simply "immature?"

    @Mike, formerly from Syracuse,

What about the fact that Andrew Shrivell is harassing Armstrong's family members and friend?

I cannot believe Mr. Shirvell's behavior is being tolerated.

Free speech trumps civil service laws.

I think its interesting that AG Cox shows now sign of firing Mr. Shirvell, however he seems to agree that his actions are disgusting. Mr. Cox should be doing his job, which is to protect the people of Michigan!

I disagree. Government employees have specific code of conduct (MOU) when it comes to the media which also includes internet responses. A government employee would be fired for his behavior not because of the 1st amendment, but the contract(MOU) for each employee and media interaction (including the Internet).

    Hi Anderson and Bloggers

I can't believe that Shivell hasn't been fired. We need stronger laws against bulling.

Well, if he won't fire him he should call him on the carpet and ask him forcefully to cease this behavior. Clearly it seems that Mr. Shervell's opinions could cloud his ability to do his job fairly for everyone.

I think that we need to have cyberbullying laws in every state.

Something everyone can do is try to get his blog shut down by complaining to the blog – report the blog as hate speech. While Blogger values and safeguards political and social commentary, material that promotes hatred toward groups based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, or sexual orientation/gender identity is not allowed on Blogger.

enough complaints may shut this down.

Mr. Cox is saying, in other words, "Leave me out of it." Would he feel the same way if it was directed to himself, a co-worker, family or friends? I think not.

As a gay man myself, I would be very scared of this guy if he was targeting me...people like this have NO place in government...

  15. Libby

Mike, formerly of Syracuse – What do you mean why the focus on the guy? Look at what he's doing! Look at what Mr. Cox is allowing him to do! They should both be fired.

Mike Cox have good pont, I know that he was so embarrased, shocked his blog, I agree with him, unbecoming or unwanted attention is right.

Great questions, Anderson! Did Mr. Cox just tell Chris Armstrong how to get this guy fired?

Does putting swastika´s on a blog about someone qualify as `fysical actions`?

The Attorney General is stuck. If he fires him, he could be sued; and if not the same possible result.

  20. Maria

Of course he should be fired, are you kidding me? This guy is insane, he is mentally ill, look at him. How is it possible for him to still have his job?! How can he defend the law?!
This is a disgrace for America. This is not freedom of speech.
They don't have any legal reasons to fire him? What about insanity?
And I am not gay or anything.

If that's the way the AG thinks maybe the student should see if he can get a restraining order to keep him as far away as possible. Just because he's getting near his home. I guess he has to protect himself – sad.

I wonder if this guy had to prosecute a gay hate crime would he do it to his best ability??

    Cessy – Chicago
on Andrew Shirvell: interesting that someone like this guy would focus on this student...this is harrassment!

Yes! Agree with yoy, This point, Never harrassment against at law!If you are harrassed by others, that is wrong!

Finishing my last post, how else would Shirvall attack this guy like he is now and making all of these claims if he did not know him in some personal way?

    Hello from Canada!
This story is bizarre and very disturbing! Asst. AG Shirval should be fired! It seems like something else is going on, and I think people should be aware. He is a civil servant and he is attacking a young student!!!! This should not be allowed to continue, and besides loosing his job, he should be found liable for harassment. Good luck to Chris Armstrong!

Andrew Shrivell just said 3 times that he "criticized" him, and it seems like it's "personal".

I hope that the student he is stalking files charges against him. I hope the Michigan Bar Association takes action against this lawyer.

I have my own theory as to why Shirvall is obessed with this student......I think Shirvall knew him personally and someone may have did something to either to make them hate each other and now since the student has recieved attention for his position at the college Shirvall is fighting against him

    September 29, 2010 at 10:04 pm |

Of course he should be fired. He is a public official who is harrassing and bullying a private citizen. And the attorney general should be fired for not firing his assistant.
