Imam of NYC Mosque Near Ground Zero Speaks Out: Join the Live Chat

Tonight, you'll hear from Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the man behind the controversial NYC Islamic Center near the former site of the World Trade Center.  He talks about why he thinks the plan should go forward and more.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

Nancy Mujinga: Of course they would reconsider it. In fact, they would love it. Maybe they would come up with a phrase that ends in miracle too.

Please don't let the fringe element change our constitution. The founders escaped prosecution and founded this great nation where everyone has the right to build a church, mosque or synagogue as long as it zoned for it.

I think the Imam made the most headway when he talked about staying true to the principles of religious freedom and set himself back when talking about the international headlines that might be generated.

    Good night everyone.

I so agree with David Gurgen regarding the idiot in Florida that wants to burn the Koran. The best thing the media could do is to pull out and don't give this nut any publicity. What a statement it would make to the world if all the media pulled out. Then he could burn the Koran with his followers and they could go have a barbeque over the coals....and the rest of the world could care less!

How can we as Americans talk about the wonders of Democracy and our role in Iraq, Afganistan and the middle east when we argue over a group building on property that they own? This is amazing! We really do need to get out of Iraq and Afganastan, because we don't believe in the mission.

Shirley–it IS a place where all faiths will be represented. This is why it is called a Multi-cultural Center. I think you must have missed that watching the program because they mentioned it several times. Also, everyone needs to remember that not all muslims are the same. Just like not all christians are like the nut in Gainesville!

    Anderson & CNN,

I would ask you to consider how you cover these sorts of issues because it always seems to degenerate. I thought Rauf made a fair accounting of himself, but you brought on some guy who's organizing a boycott on construction? He added absolutely nothing to that conversation.

And quit using "ground zero mosque".... it's a loaded phrase and isn't true.

Thank you Susan for your comment! Sad that the narrow-minded minority is getting more air time than those who want to have a serious, thoughtful conversation.

I would think that losing a brother would make Rosaleen more empathetic toward the men and women that are fighting around the world. My husband is in Afghanistan right now and I pray that Americans will conduct themselves in a manner that will keep him safe.

It's obvious that the location is not the big issue as seen all around the country. The contractor on the show does not speak for most americans. He just speaks loud. 70% of americans don't apposed this. 70% of the people polled opposed it. As usual the truth is hidden by the rhetoric.

I wouldn't want to attend a church that insisted on building in an area that hurt other people's feeling, because they have the right to. It seems very disrespectful.

    Good Night

Anderson, how close is too close to Ground Zero for an Islamic Center to be built. Your guest earlier mentioned she could see the pace in the sky where the top floors of the Trade Center once stood and I was moved by her pain and loss. At the same time you could see the Trade Center from New Jersey, Brooklyn, Harlem and miles away so where is the line?

A 70 yr old patriotic and Christian American, I have worked in 6 Muslim nations since 2001. Complete strangers in Muslim countries shared their anguish and mortification with me, right after 9/11, that people calling themselves Muslim attacked the twin towers. Islam did not attack us, evil kooks did. Let us demonstrate that we understand this and never ever return to the witch hunts of long ago.

we have our soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan and other muslim nations. if we are so polarized about muslims, why bother fighting, why are they there? may be we should pull them out and sit at home in isolation

My wife serves this country and she has met many Muslims. It is a shame to see how people can be so ignorant. Seriously? Go build a Mosque in the Middle East? Let's say they agree to move the mosque somewhere else, what will happen in the future? Is every Mosque condemned to face the same opposition? The great thing about this country is our freedom to worship according to our faith. This is what our Soldiers are fighting for. If we deny this right, what are our troops fighting for? What is my wife fighting for?

Don't forget, Muslims were also killed on 9/11.

The imam seemed to be searching for a solution. Why not have an inter-faith committee formed to explore a compromise.
