'Plan B' For Trapped Miners: Join the Live Chat

Tonight, simply remarkable pictures from deep underground. 33 Chilean miners, alive, but now, for the first time, they're also fully aware that they could be down here until Christmas. Unless a new 'Plan B' can get them out sooner. Plus, five years after Katrina, an up close look at how Habitat from Humanity volunteers are helping rebuild the city.

Scroll down to join the live chat during the program. It's your chance to share your thoughts on tonight's headlines. Keep in mind, you have a better chance of having your comment get past our moderators if you follow our rules.

Here are some of them:

1) Keep it short (we don't have time to read a "book")
2) Don't write in ALL CAPS (there's no need to yell)
3) Use your real name (first name only is fine)
4) No links
5) Watch your language (keep it G-rated; PG at worst - and that includes $#&*)

What a sad situation in Pakistan. I hope relief comes soon.

Which is a worse situation, Pakistan or the miners?

@Samantha Rowley, Nashville, TN Thanks for your comment. Maybe they are near a volcanic area. I was wondering if the fact that the southern hemisphere is heading into summer has something to do with it? Or maybe the climate in the area?

I am praying for the trapped miners and their loved ones. The mining
company should never have put them in that situation to begin with.I hope they are held accountable to the fullest extent the law allows. It's criminal.

    @ Kenya

Well stated! It is sad that wild animals are desired as pets.

I heard reclaiming civil right! If I'm not mistaken!

When MLK gave that speech neither the Civil Rights
Act or voting rights had passed. Just google it.

@Chris, I agree with you, but knowing Beck's past I cannot help but think he may have something up his sleeve, but then again he may not, the man is full of 'surprises'

Jo Ann, yes your correct... however the people who are making the money do not think its cruel even though both of us do.

    @JoAnn,
Well said. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Beck is a chameleon. He'll say anything for attention and money.

  14. Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

From what I understand, Beck's guest list includes blacks, hispanics, and whites. He has the same right as anyone else to hold a rally.

  15. Dan

@Heather, I completely agree with you. He is clueless.

    August 27, 2010 at 10:40 pm |
  16. Chris

I often think those so critical of Beck have not listened to an entire program. When he said blacks don't own King, he also said whites don't own President Lincoln. I think civil rights movements are for everyone; it gives everyone an opportunity to be famous and rich if that's their goal.

Where do those habitat for humanity volunteers stay when they are working on houses?

I wondered how much experience it took to volunteer with them. Thanks for that report.

The tiger cub was being taken to what country?

How can Glen Beck not know that the day he gives his speech is the anniversary of the human rights' speeh especialy when he has invited MLK's daughter to speak there?

    Money often results in cruelty.

Civil rights movements are for disadvantaged minorities and their supporters. They aren't for rich powerful famous white men like Glenn Beck and their personal ego trips.

Glenn Beck is out of this mind.

Regarding the temperatures underground, I was thinking about that too. I've visited caves in America and they are fairly cold and I've always brought a jacket. Are they near a volcanic area which might explain the heat? Excellent question...

    August 27, 2010 at 10:35 pm |
  33. Nina

Michael, I would be concerned about digging because the potential for cave in. Its just a thought!

I am delighted to see the cub alive; but hopefully, we can put a stop to this kind of behavior.

Absolutely love Habitat for Humanity! That organization has been great for so many cities in America. Read the book "No More Shacks" by Millard Fuller who came up with the idea for Habitat for Humanity. An eye-opening book on his views of shelter for all.

Can we send cards or messages to these folks in the mine? Messeges of encouragement and good will! I think it would be nice!

Good job on showing how big 500 sq. feet with 33 men is. What caused the mine accident in Chile? What's to keep it from happening again?

  43. David, Indiana

Jerry Lenenger said the miners cleared away water in the area with a backhoe?

Why is the temperature underground so high, isn't underground temp ususally about 50 degrees farenheit?

i hope that the chilean underground is stable – wasn't the chilean earthquake strong enough to shift the earth's axis and shorten the earth's day by a few microseconds? hope all stays stable

Chad's explanation made everything a lot clearer. Drilling the hole away from the room the men are in makes a lot of sense.
