Video: Extended interview: Birth tourism

Anderson Cooper | BIO
AC360° Anchor

Editor's Note: As we dig deeper into immigration issues, we take a look into the 14th Amendment and the legitimacy of claims of "anchor babies" born purposefully on U.S. soil to gain American citizenship. Texas State Representatives Debbie Riddle and Rafael Anchia joined us on the program tonight. Watch the full and extended interview.

i want to know why is the mexican economy not able to provide a good life for its citizens so they want to stay. to come across the border legally from mexico it costs lots of money. why? Our country does not charge a fee to its citizens when we leave to live in another country, why does mexico do this to theirs?

Im from Texas and there is no way I approve of Rep. Riddles actions and opinions. Its a shame, she is making Texans look stupid...or should I say look 'riddle'.

You really tore into her on this, and while there may be no hard evidence currently, I suppose you'd rather just wait 15 years and see what happens, eh?
So I guess you support the current laws that allow anchor babies?
    Nothing to see, move along?
Even if it's not happening now, you can be assured it will happen now that we've given them the idea.

Anchia calls the anchor baby phenonenon a "myth" and states that the illegal alien mothers of these children born in the US get no benefits as a result and are legally subjected to deportation. I challenge him to show how many of these anchor baby mothers are actually deported after now having a US citizen child. Immigration judges have always given into the idea that the mother should not be deported because after all who will then care for the US citizen baby if she is sent home. A US citizen can't be deported (the baby), and although the mother should be subjected to deportation, no immigration judge would never enforce such an order; so yes, the illegal mother does end up using the "anchor baby" to her beneifit.

I would like to see Debbie Riddles Ancestry and see which generation took advantage of the 14 th amendment to gain U.S. Citizenship.

The scary part of changing the 14 th amendment is that it also deals with liberty and due process. Is there a wolf in sheeps clothing?

It is a little distressing to watch the " me first" generation try to change the rules after " I got mine".

It is also amazing to find out via Debbie Ridlle that Obama has single handedly caused the immigration, banking and recession problems. Where were these antagonists in 2000 when we needed them?

Not only should Debbie Riddle lay off the Botox, but she really shouldn't be fearmongering again. We don't need garbage like this. The nation is divided enough.

Rafael Anchia had no business on that panel. Riddle was hateful, using false "facts" and "former FBI agents" and not to mention complaining that she wasn't given her interview questions in advance.

What an utter joke. How people like Riddle, Bachman, and SO many others get elected is beyond me. These Tea-baggers are going to be the social group that produces the next Timothy McVeigh, I promise.

Representative Riddle is a nut. She is trying to spread fear with unsubstantiated claims of "information from retired FBI agents" that plots exist in which babies are being born to undocumented illegals with the intent of later having them return as terrorists.
Her claims, which include suggestions that the Obama administration is ignoring boarder threats, are political hate speech. I am sorry that this state representative comes from my home town of Houston. She is a fringe element here.
