Yes, I know those kind of people. They are the kind of people who are not going to take a "No!" for an answer kind of like the White House Party without an invite!

As a Native American I am greatly saddened to see the term 'Sweat Lodge' abused by one of the money changers from the dominant society. True Inipi Ceremony (Sweat Lodge) would never be sold and would never result in deaths such as these. When ego leads the agenda only harm can come to the innocent followers.

Blue plastic tarps on a sweat lodge? Who taught him? Not a Indian ~ guaranteed. Such a sadness ~ the truth of the spiritual ceremony will be seen. I'm glad he is being held accountable.

I had friends that used a sweat lodge and one of their children almost died because of it. I feel this is a unsafe form of celebration or initiation just like hazing. I am from Chico California and Chico State is totally banning any form of initiations in any form. I am glad he is being held accountable.

The money driven ignorance and disrespect for our precious Native American cuture is astounding. He had no buisness attempting to replicate Native American practices. That is exectly what he had done. This is our cultural and spiritual way of life and has never been done for money. He will answer for this abuse and be held accountable.

I think Ray definetly had a lack of concern, more like no concern of the people he was 'trying to help'

Good evening Anderson. Seems odd to be starting talking about James Arthur Ray after seeing what has been and is going on in Haiti throughout most of January.

It seems like it took a long time for law enforcment in Arizona to bring charges against Ray. Is Gary Tuchman saying 700 pages in the subpoena?

Yes, after the deaths of three sweat lodge participants, he should've stopped his seminars and had an independent review of his seminar events and the safety procedures he had in place.

    @Esmi,
    Welcome to the Blog!

It's great that James Arthur Ray was arrested! We have learned a lot about sweat lodges from those i the native community who have said that they are Not dangerous, and are really beautiful when done properly!

Glad for all of the Native community that an arrest has been made here!

@Linda in Arizona , I agree with what you said about James Ray, but I have to wonder about the mental state of the people who would follow someone like him.

Who in their right mind would go into a structure like the sweat lodge?

  14. Dodie, Irvine CA

James Ray needs to be fully responsible for his behaviors....

Everyone knows plastic tents are dangerous. No ventilation. People overheat, hence what happened...

They may have had good intentions, but I don't understand with all of the news coverage of how difficult the adoption process was that they thought they could swoop in to Haiti and leave with children with no paper work. What were they going to do with the children when they landed? How could they then be adopted?

these new age gurus are a residual reflection of the postmodern condition – tee pees and the so claaed sweat lodge – all these native and indigenous practises – employed for profit and end up killing people. hmm makes me reflect upon postmodernity and – its discontent.

I can see why you would be offended by a man like Ray, he obviously did not represent true tradition or spiritual pathway.

you are so correct. Also the tents are Not plastic. ~sigh~ I hope there are no residual problems from the hot plastic

@ Esmi: Why would a native person go to a sweat lodge? What is the purpose? Thanks

Good evening everyone. I'm glad to see such good coverage of the sweat lodge guru. You would think that with something this tragic happening during one of his sessions, he would have been horribly upset and done everything he could to find out what went wrong. I just can't imagine his "business as usual" response.

this James Arthur Ray does seem to be a bit dangerous - mostly because he seems to act like he doesn't think he's done anything wrong. he is a taker.

Good evening. Some justice has been served with the arrest of James Ray. More justice will come when he's convicted in a court of law.

Great story, as always, by Gary Tuchman!

Man-slaughter, he should get a bigger charge for the way he behaved!

I truly hope they can find more to charge him with.

@Dodie, & Emily, I am very glad to see him arrested too!

This man gives new age spiritual work a Bad name. There are true teachers out there, who do Not charge hundreds of dollars.

I hope James Ray would be locked away in jail forever! He is a shameless man and should never see the light of day ever again.

Ten years for one count of manslaughter....so that means he has the possibility of doing 30 years in prison. With all the evidence they have it sounds like an open and close case

    Great report here by Gary!
It's so hard to believe that someone who is in charge of these people can be So oblivious to what is going on with them! how eerie!

It is important that people stop doing these sweat lodges who do not know or understand the culture.

James Ray uses plastic. talk about Toxic! Oh dear... how horrible... I wonder if there are any residual effects from the plastic tent

James Ray is a spiritual charlatan. He stole the sweat lodge ceremony from the Indians, but he didn't know squat about how to run it, or even how to construct the lodge. He used PLASTIC tarps on the top, which cut off all air exchange. He had 5 times too many people inside. There should be a circle of people one or two rows deep ONLY, so the person running the sweat can keep track of them all. He was charging the participants huge sums of money. That is also not done. He's a fraud. I'm so glad he's being charged, and that the state of AZ took their time to make a strong case against him. I hope he spends years in prison.

The International adoption expert that Mr. Cooper interviewed in Haiti stated that if possible the children should stay in Haiti. Why couldn't we pledge to educate those children who would go to college, get a degree and return to their country to help it get on its feet again. Education is the most important thing for those children.
