Reporter's Note:
The Democrats scored another incremental victory in the health care reform fight this weekend. So I’m writing another incremental letter to the White House.

Dear Mr. President,
Is it just me or have you noticed a lot of trick plays in the NFL this year? I’m not sure you have much time for watching games, but maybe you can get Biden to Tivo some of the best action, and edit it down. It’s not like he’s too busy. Anyway, it seems like every weekend I see yet another team rolling out some wild stunt; a quarterback making an underhand pass to a lineman, or a punter running backward down the field in a nun’s habit, or a kicker picking up the ball and running out of the stadium tunnel. That sort of thing. And that has me thinking: Maybe it’s time for you to consider a quarterback sneak on the health care debate!
Hear me out. You got this nice victory over the weekend. The Senate voted to debate the bill proposed by Harry Reid. Mind you, only in the U.S. Capitol can the decision to simply discuss something be considered a major step; but rather than rag on about it, let me just say “congratulations.” Although, I’m not sure why I am congratulating you.
One of the chief complaints (forgive me) in this whole process is that you have been somewhat missing in action on the battlefield. Yes, you talk up the need for passing some kind of bill at some point which will contain some provisions for getting more insurance to some people in some form. See the problem? For all that you’ve said about the need for this legislation, you’ve remained awfully vague about precisely what you want to see in it and when you want it on your desk. I know that you’ve been trying to give your legislative pals some running room, but at times it looks like frankly they’re carrying the offense and you’re just along for the ride.
That’s what would make a QB sneak at this point so effective! Imagine how stunned your opponents would be, and how much it would encourage your fellow Dems, if suddenly you stepped up loud and clear and laid it on the line. Take on some of those explosive issues that are threatening to yet sink this bill, and make it abundantly clear where you stand. Is there risk involved? Sure. But if you believe in this whole idea of health reform (and, uh, if you don’t…this would be a remarkably bad time to let that slip) now is the time to show your team that you are ready to stand right alongside them in the trenches. After all if you never step out of the pocket and risk getting hit; well, yes, you might avoid a potential loss; but you’ll also rob yourself of the right to claim the victory.
Just an idea. And yes, the Saints are still undefeated! Thanks for asking!
Regards,
Tom

November 23rd, 2009 9:15 am ET Being vague is what Obama does best is it not, on all fronts. He comes across as weak. His greatest feat to date, the deception that got him into the oval office in the first place. |

November 23rd, 2009 9:24 am ET Is this 1978 high unemployment; three mile island leak; gas price going up; up rising in iran; president that thinks the worlds problems are created by united states. We thought president jimmy carter was bad? |

November 23rd, 2009 10:40 am ET The president is more like the owner of the football team. He hires the people who will run the team on a day in day out basis. He makes him plan known to them and they make it happen. |

November 23rd, 2009 11:21 am ET The sneak has already been played. Pay off the senators who haven't made up their minds about this bill. That way it can be debated. How many are going to be paid off to sign the finished bill? |

November 23rd, 2009 4:37 pm ET Hi Tom, Yesterday, I watched Bill Moyer at PBS.org (channel 13) making a connection between President Johnson's administration on the Vietnam war four decades ago and the current president Obama on the War of Afganistan, calling them both Quagmires! He clearly notes that the situation is totally different now then it was then. What is your take on that? Happy Thanksgiving! |
