Hello. Happy Thursday!

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica, Devna, Megan, and Bloggers! :)

I saw the ending of LLK....very disturbing!
Happy Birthday LK! :)

New info. on the Fort Hood killings? Looking forward to that, and the Killings at the Canal series.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Hey, everyone: Anderson, Erica, David (Indiana), friends and bloggers!

Megan Dresslar (Shoreline, WA) asked me to tell you that she is having trouble connecting to internet and, unfortunately, she hasn't been able to be here, but otherwise all is well with her, but she misses everyone! :)

Cessy, Chicago IL   November 19th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Hi Anderson! and to your amazing and fabulous 360 staff!

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Could hasan have been stopped?
I don't know.... Difficult question to answer!

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 19th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

I'm wondering if the politically correct police squashed the report because it focuses on Islamic military members which some could view as profiling.

"starr, formerly known as vincent   November 19th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica & entire Teamm360.

Hi to all fellow bloggers on This Thurs 11/19/09!

I have been out All day and have not heard any news today & am looking forward to tonight's show!

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica, Bloggers, and AC360 team... Can't believe Oprah is going to put and end to her show, that show made her millions...

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 19th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Nothing is going to help if the government continues to ignore the warning signals because of political correctness.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

It would be nice if there was a way to save people who lose control, such as Hasan before the worst happens

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Good evening everyone! been long day, glad to come home to AC360 :)

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I think all suspicious people should be on probation, who can we trust these days?

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   November 19th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Shannon Rossmiller is great. Articulate and easy to follow.

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

I wonder if Oprah is going to pass the reigns to someone else.... who will it be? Rachel Ray? Tyra?

Sharon Hastings   November 19th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and all bloggers. I do hope some good can come of the Fort Hood tragedy. Hopefully there will be better efforts in the future to identify and act upon troubling behaviors. Even though many had concerns, it seems no one thought he would ever murder 13 people. Predicting future violence is difficult. Apart from the radical views, there is the other issue of his incompetence and how no one wanted to deal with that.

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

@Isabel Siaba,

"Could hasan have been stopped?"

I'm wondering if any future "Hasans" will be Stopped!
We can't change what he did already, however, so many red flags were ignored!
Will that continue into the future?

Anthonia-Bay Area!   November 19th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Happy Birthday Larry King!! Oh and Good Evening Everyone :)

I recall Oprah telling the press that she was going to cancel her show in 2007 but she never did...and now its 2009...but anyways, I love Oprah and all of her strengthens!

Paula, Colorado   November 19th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi! It's good to see you on the west coast.
I didn't realize Oprah had been on for nearly 25 years.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I can't imagine that Oprah will stop, as I can't imagine a day not have AC.

eople like Oprah should not ever stop!

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I'd like a guy to jump on a couch for me :)

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

@Kelly,

I don't think that she will pass her show onto anyone!

If she did, she would want to pass it to her friend Gayle, I would think.

She is making alot of money off of her other "talk shows"...ie, Dr. Phil, and Dr. Oz....and I'm sure that there is more!

Renee   November 19th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

@ Anthonia: I thought is was 2011! 2009 is almost OVER!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 19th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Oprah is highly overrated.

"starr, formerly known as vincent   November 19th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Wow! can't believe that Opra is calling it quits! Wonder what she will do now?

Her show broke a number of records and wonderful interviews that impacted so many of us.

Thank s Isabel for letting us know about Megan Dressler, send her my greetings if you would, thansk!

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

@Casey Jones,

I agree with your statement about Shannon Rossmiller.
This is the first time that I've heard of her. Hope that AC has her on the show again!

Lori   November 19th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I will miss Oprah

David, Indiana   November 19th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica, Isabel, everyone.

@Emily Today is Larry King's birthday? Happy Birthday Larry!

So Shannen Rossmiller's report is missing? I think there is a pt about the hard work maybe other countries have done to understand radicalization, but Major Hasan's problems seem to stem from a very isolated personal situation. Not only is he single unmarried, but he was shunned by his colleagues, up until he came to Fort Hood. I do think people in the military in intelligence inherently run the risk of being compromised.

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

There you go, Oprah wasn't going to just disappear... now she can have her own network! But I thought she had the Oh! channel?

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Wow, Oprah has changed dramatically over the years...

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

@Kelly,

LOL! There are many Married women who would be happy to have there spouses to 'sit' on the couch with them! No need to jump on one! :)

Renee   November 19th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Oprah is smart. She is going out in her prime! Only fools go out when you are down.

BettyAnn, Nacogdoches,TX   November 19th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Oprah will move on to great things as she always does~

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Oprah has helped so many and she discovered many talents. She still has so much to do ...

Bryan   November 19th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Opah should run for President

Terri   November 19th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Hi Anderson,

Outrageous! How could this guy Hasan have flown 'under the radar'. I find it hard to believe that a Major in the U.S. Armed Forces could have been in contact with a known, dangerous enemy of America, while we're at war, and not have (at the very least) been immediately dismissed and put on a serious watch list. I just don't get it!

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   November 19th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Good Evening Everyone!

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

maybe Oprah & Stedman (sp) will finally get married?

Glenn   November 19th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Oprah for President!

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 19th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Oprah may find out what Jay Leno found; if you change the forum ratings don't always follow.

Karen Gonyea, MN   November 19th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

I wish Oprah the best!

Cessy, Chicago IL   November 19th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Oprah leaving..I'm sure she's moving her show somewherelse. I'm open to seeing anyone get her timeslot as long as it's not a member of the Blagojevich, "The Balloon" family or the Octo-mom lady :)

Ellen should get her time slot! We love her!

Joseph O RI   November 19th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Evening all, is profiling the answer? An individual who is going "over the edge" usually displays signs as seen with Major Hasan. This is also true as it relates to the unusually high suicide rate in the military.
We shouldn't race to "profiling" all muslims in the military, it won't end there. Lots of fear mongering going on right now, as well as politicizing any and all aspects of terrorism.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Oprah is an example of strong and warrior woman!

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Feel better Erica!!!

Anthonia-Bay Area!   November 19th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

@Renee- Well yes I know her show is going to be canceled in 2011, however she did state years ago saying that her show will go off air in 2007 ;)

Zoee - Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Makes you rethink the movies! ahaha

Karen Gonyea, MN   November 19th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Oh NO! I love movie popcorn.

Renee   November 19th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

@ Emily: Oprah said in an interview she would not marry Steddy, as I call him.

@ All: I would rather eat Ben and Jerry's than the popcorn.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Wow! This fattening just looking, but it is so good!! Lol...

Kelli   November 19th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

I went to high school with Joe Mayo (one of the soldiers serving time for the killing of those Iraqis). It's hard to believe that this happened, and that the person who was one of my JROTC superiors in high school was capable of this. I can't believe it's the same person. But there is a price to be payed for such a crime, and I just hate that his family has to suffer because of his decision.

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

They should pop popcorn and fry fries and potato chips in olive oil, then it would be good for you. Why don't they do that?

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

The topic about the executed people in the middle east reminds me of a movie I watched, it was sad...

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 19th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

I don't care what they say, I'm keeping my movie popcorn!

David, Indiana   November 19th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

@Isabel, that is big news about Oprah, it's hard to imagine. I hope she doesn't stop doing shows, appearing on tv.

I hope Erica is feeling better soon.

That's a big court ruling for New Orleans and the surrounding area. It is amazing to see how wide the Mississippi river gulf outlet is.

Wow popcorn is powerful stuff.

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Erica Hill is sick?? Poor her, being sick really is a bummer, when I got sick I felt like collapsing at college...

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

@Renee,
Love Ben & Jerry's! 100% with you at that!

Oprah is smart not to get married! with all of her money!

anthony   November 19th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I am a former soldier who has returned from Iraq about a year ago, I have seen things that was less than honorable. War changes individuals in a worse way and sometimes you do things youre not proud of. But the one thing soldliers never do is turn on one another and start tellling on other soldiers. War is hell and what you do there stays there
sincerely
anthony

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

What makes the killings in the canal any different than the war that is actually happening. There are all over there killing each other in the first place...

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

@ David, Indiana

Oprah helps so many with his show. I also hope that it will continue somehow, despite knowing that a daily show is tiring too! :)

JAY   November 19th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

He did the right thing? He only said something after facing article 15.

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

wanted to make a trade...make a deal!

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   November 19th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

I'd be afraid too....snitch with questionable credibility.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

@ Erica

I hope you get well soon. AC360 is not the same without you!

Katie   November 19th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Oprah is a great person and like everyone else, a break from work is good. :) But a retirement might be even better. (Or worst if you like working)

It makes me wonder what she'll do after the last show. Waking up the next day and thinking "What will I do now?" I'm guessing she'll finish up on side projects that were put away.

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Is Sgt Cummingham the only one that had a lawyer?

How can you know what was in his head?
Did he tell you?

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Well... as we all say, one pays for ones mistakes...

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 19th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

This man betrayed the trust of his comrades.

Dulcie - Denver   November 19th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Cunningham seems like he did the right thing for the wrong reasons. He's not coming across very admirable.

He shouldn't be persecuted for coming forward, but I doesn't seem very honorable. If he'd come forward after 9 months because he was haunted about it, it'd be one thing, but after he got in trouble? I dunno.

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Abbie Boudreau has great reporting here...

@Casey Jones,

I agree you on the "snitch with questionable credibility".

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Why do bad things happen to good people? That soldier should not be taking the beating simply because he does something right...

rachid cherif   November 19th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Very sad story, I feel bad for those Iraqis being killed that way and for no reason.

Kelli   November 19th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

He did betray them. When soldiers are overseas, all they have is each other, and when you feel like you can't trust your brothers, what do you do with that? What they did was wrong, but this guy simply amazes me. Did he even want to serve?

eric lanstrum   November 19th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

i served under 1st sgt john hatley for 3 yrs, he was a mentor, a leader,a father figuire, cunningham came forward , only to save his self, cunningham has ruined the lives of many, the problems with the deha. now and then are the same , i am sure countless lives were saved by these sgt's actions,

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:40 pm ET

@Dulcie,

I agree with "he's not coming across very admirable".

He has dirty hands here, in different ways, keeping secrets, and then what he did to make that trade....

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I wonder if these 3 will have a chance at clemence?

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

To do the right thing?? What right thing, its never right to kill anyone, even if they are bad... thats what jail is for...

Joseph O RI   November 19th, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Execution is a difficult thing to rationalize under the cover of war. Murder is murder. Thank God for the majority of level headed soldiers that face the same difficulties as the men that took it upon themselves to set policy!
They belong in jail.

eric lanstrum   November 19th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

cunningham came forward only to save his own but, he was facing more charges then just assault, why didnt u ask more about the charges

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   November 19th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

No one knows how they would act in the same situation with their life and the lives of others on the line.

Chris   November 19th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

It's very clear to me. Honesty is a good thing and all those who commit crimes are criminals. There is no real brotherhood that should be honored or respected in a case like this. The Mafia is a brotherhood.

Emma   November 19th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

The soldier's confesion sounds coerced, and why are the other 10 not being charged?

roger tolbert Detroit MI   November 19th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

in jail for defending your country

Carol   November 19th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

A soldier must experience such high stress in determining how to behave honorably. The soldier who exposed the three sargeants who shot four Iraqi detainees is having his integrity and loyalty questioned. The soldier who exposed the Abu Graib torture was threatened and forced to move from his home town for doing the honorable thing. I wonder if there were soldiers who did not want to expose Hasan for fear of having his loyalty questioned.

The press really has a responsibility to support those who report torture, murder, rape etc in the armed forces and to make it clear that criminal actions are unacceptable. The fear of retaliation by other soldiers is a valid fear as indicated by one of the convicted officers lawyer. Almost always the whistle blower loses his career due to the real fear of retaliation.

roger tolbert Detroit MI   November 19th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

no one should be charged

Renee   November 19th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

@ JoAnn: You are right!

Caroline, Los Angeles   November 19th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Hi all. Sad story of the soldiers. War is insane.

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

@eric lanstrum,

That might be in the piece tomorrow...re. the charges, or perhaps AC was not able to talk about them...they did speak there with his lawyer.
Have to tune in tomorrow to see the rest of this series!

Bean   November 19th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

I don't think it's the motive behind Cunningham's decision to blow the whistle is relevant for it to be questioned.

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I am only 18 and never thought I would ever live through a time of war... well, I guess no one else expected the same...

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   November 19th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I believe the situation waded heavy on all of the soldiers' consciousness.

David, Indiana   November 19th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I don't see how self interest enters into understanding what Jess Cunningham did. That took courage. Also I don't see how you could trust someone leading your unit who killed handcuffed, blindfolded, detainees.

I can see the band of brother ethos, but he had to report a war crime. Wouldn't he be worried about the same thing happening again and the unit totally deteriorating? A premeditated murder, not in the midst of action, is a bad sign for the future of the unit. Also makes him complicit.

The issue of holding and releasing detainees in Iraq, why didn't they just hold people to keep them off the battlefield. Seems reasonable to hold people caught in a fight not release to come back and fight again.

Jennifer - AZ   November 19th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Hi everyone,

Looks like wal mart needs to upgrade their video cameras.

Stjepan Mestrovic   November 19th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Eric Lanstrum is right, Cunningham was facing more charges than just assault.

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

I forgot that she is a school teacher. Very good behavior for a school teacher and the daughter of a religious leader!

"saved her spot"!!!

I have not heard that since I was in Grade 3!

Mark Porter   November 19th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I served in the Army for 20 years and I had ethics training each and every year I served. Did the services stop this training? Because, I wouldn't have participated in Abu Graib because of this training, and I damn sure wouldn't have participated in murder. There is a law that has to be followed even in war, and those that do have to face the consequences of their actions.

michael belcher   November 19th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

In regard to 1SG hatley I knew him as a platton Sergeant and he is without question one of the finest NCO's I've ever meet. The Soldier that came out said he had no respect for Hatley did not know him that well. HE TOOK CARE OF SOLDIERS and the Soldier that accussed him was in trouble and looked to devert attention away from him for disrespect of a officer he had to be faceing a Article 15. This is not the way a Solid Soldier acts.

Renee   November 19th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

The sad, sad part of this is that this woman is a school teacher. What is she saying to parents and children?

roger tolbert Detroit MI   November 19th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

only the 13 really know what happen

Caroline, Los Angeles   November 19th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Does anyone know why she was putting her stuff in front of the line in the first place?

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 19th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

She wasn't arrested for cutting in line, she was arrested for assault and resisting arrest. 5 cops and 4 witnesses all agree with the cops' story.

Anthonia-Bay Area!   November 19th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Wow, that woman was vicious! She could have handled the situation a lot differently...that entire situation at the Walmart store escalated into something irrelevant!!

Teresa,OH   November 19th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Line cutting has serious repercussions.

So does threatening the boys in blue.

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

I don't get what the fifteen years are for, many men hit women at home and yet they only pay like a year or not at all... just doesn't make sense....!

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   November 19th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Guess what? I don't trust these police. If I was a black woman and five white guys were trying to arrest me, I bet I would act out as well out of sheer terror.

JAY   November 19th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

We should be fighting to grant these Soldiers Clemency,I gruantee that they will not run the other way and would still serve & defend our country & not try to get out of their enlistment contracts.

Renee   November 19th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

@ Caroline: Too busy, you know, she had to text her friends and get to a party.

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

I do hope they "clarify" their mammogram guidelines so that it no longer gives justification to ration mammograms. I know personally at least two women in their early 40s that got their breast cancer caught during a routine screening. Why should we take a step back on women's heatlh?

BettyAnn, Nacogdoches,TX   November 19th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Why are people so rude in invidualistic? i wll pray for the day that we can only see our commonalities~ On that note, I hope everyone has a peaceful night of sweet dreams. Dreams that can come true~

Hillary Hopkinton, NH   November 19th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Both sides of this story are disturbing to me. The soilders were wrong they know it, we know it. Their reason was the holding area was a catch and release prision? This is what needs to be fixed.

Mike, formerly from Syracuse   November 19th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Is it my imagination or has use of the race card defense gotten much more prevalent?

Karen Gonyea, MN   November 19th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Only in Walmart:)

Caroline, Los Angeles   November 19th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

What is sublimely ridiculous about the supposed new breast examine recommendations is that some yahoo on the panel also told women to stop doing self-exams.

Self-exams don't cost a dime. What was the point of that advice? So dumb.

Demarco Deleon   November 19th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Oprah Winfery annoucement is not shocking, she said it long time ago after one of her friend who passed away told her to make it 25 seasons, when she asked him why he said 25 is a good number.
and she promised him just that.

After hearing about Wal-Mart, I now fear Wal-Mart :-P

roger tolbert Detroit MI   November 19th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

get those mamograms ladies

Emily   November 19th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

@Mike, formerly from Syracuse,
I hope that she is convicted for assaulting the police officers!
It seems like she is using the fact that she "lost her space in line" as part of her excuse! ....and of course, racism!

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

@ Karen Gonyea, MN – What happens at Wal-Mart, Stays at Wal-Mart ;-)

nite all

Kelly - Harrisburg, PA   November 19th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Thank you Dr. Gupta for saying straight up "go get a mammogram."

Cessy, Chicago IL   November 19th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Yeay! Dr. Gupta in the house!

Govt.Task force-- excuses..excuses...they seem to be confused about their study.

Caroline, Los Angeles   November 19th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

Good point Dr. Gupta--what's the Dr. going to say? "Do what you want." That's what he'll say.

Teresa,OH   November 19th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

@Gady: just dont cut in line :)

"get those mammograms ladies"

agreed! Great to see Dr. Gupta!

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

This change about the mammography is dangerous because in any illness as soon as it discovers out, it's better.

Isabel Siaba ( Brazil)   November 19th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

@Dr. Gupta
Thank you so much

Gady Mayen - Hamilton, Canada   November 19th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

@ AC360 team & Anderson – Don't forget to get your mamograms ;-)

Caroline, Los Angeles   November 19th, 2009 10:58 pm ET

This is not health care rationing. No one came out and said police will arrest you if you get a mammogram before age 50.

LOL, great book!
