When President Barack Obama came to Cairo in June and made his address to the Muslim world, reaction in Egypt was wildly positive.
Many Egyptians had fallen in love with the new young American president with an Arabic middle name. Some even picked up the "Yes we can" slogan.
His appeal was fueled by an almost unanimous dislike for his predecessor, George W. Bush, widely perceived in the region as a Christian fundamentalist leading an anti-Muslim crusade.
But that was then. Euphoria has a short shelf life in the Middle East, and Barack Obama is not exempt.
To gauge reaction among Egyptian intellectuals to the news, I called Hisham Qassim, a democracy and human rights activist I've known for many years. He was perplexed at the news from Norway.

October 9th, 2009 12:00 pm ET So it seems we are not the only ones that think Obama getting a peace prize is ridiculous! LOL When I heard he won this morning I said the exact same thing as Qassim. Obama has done nothing and everything he has done hasn't worked. Cindy..Ga.. |

October 9th, 2009 1:22 pm ET While I would not go so far as to say nothing he has done has worked, I feel the problems were such a mess that the solutions will take time, and some cooperation in the political circles. I just think it is ridiculous to lay out this red carpet of expectation on one individual and then say he didn't meet the unrealism of it all. Most of us would undoubtably agree that no one deserves that prize at the moment. The proof is in the pudding...while there is no peace, there is no prize (awarded). |

October 9th, 2009 1:34 pm ET It's not true that "he has done nothing." Does he deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? By his own words, no. But, I don't think the prize was awarded to him based on his actions. I think it was awarded to him as a representative of America, as an act of good faith. People around the world came together and spoke today. What did they tell us? That they are happy we've selected Barack Obama as our president, that they are hopeful for the future of the world, and that they are willing – through hard work on all our parts – to put the disaster of Bush's presidency behind us and embrace America and what she stands for again. For that, I applaud our president. I hope he gives the money to a worthy cause. Liz, Iowa |

October 9th, 2009 1:42 pm ET ”EFFORTS” are as important as accomplishments. Some people need to be reminded of this. |

October 9th, 2009 2:13 pm ET As far as I'm concerned the Nobel Peace Prize lost all credibility this morning when the announcement about Obama was made. Apparently winning at Candyland takes more skill and effort than getting one of these things. What really annoys me is this "gift" to our apologizer is a slap in the face to all those who legitimately deserved to win the prize (like Blessed Teresa of Calcutta). |

October 9th, 2009 2:34 pm ET I am sure Mr. Obama means well and wants the best for America,,,,He constantly tells us what he is going to do, BUT he has done nothing YET...Maybe this Nobel is for what he wants to do...What is wrong here????? JH |

October 9th, 2009 2:37 pm ET This is so obscene. Obama has done nothing, absolutely nothing. this award degrades it for those who have truly ACCOMPLISHED something, like Woodrow Wilson and the League of Nations, or Mother teresa. What has Obama DONE but talk? For him to accept just shows what a titanic ego he has. |

October 9th, 2009 2:49 pm ET What is the Shura Council of Egypt doing for energy independence and national security ? Congradulations on your award Obama and is the energy independence bill signed yet ? In an economic crisis American's can be demanding on accountability but it's all peaceful work in progress and sounds as if Egypt understands that. . |

October 9th, 2009 2:49 pm ET This has to be one of the most OUTRAGEOUS things I have heard. This President has NOT done a single thing to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize ! Lets see–so far he has stopped a cost of living from Social Security for seniors–trying to force his will upon the people regarding health care, put us in debt to the tune of 1.4 trillion dollars-and spends the American peoples money on trips for himself and family all over the world–for what? Ever heard of picking up the phone to talk to them? I am |

October 9th, 2009 2:51 pm ET Who would have thought that holding a BEER SUMMIT would win you the 1.2 million dollar Nobel Peace Prize! I hold a beer summit at my home every night. |

October 9th, 2009 6:32 pm ET People forget the amazing accomplishments that the man has already had. His story of achievment as a minority raised by a single mother who took a deep interest and love for his community, and then being acknowledged for his tremendous accomplisments he was elected senator and the first african-american US president. The Prize was created to award those who are able through tireless self-sacrifice to affect change in the worl around them for good. I can't think of anyone who embodies those qualities today more than Obama. |

October 9th, 2009 7:38 pm ET Amazing how people, especially on the far-right are just so narrow minded. Today all the comments from the conservatives have proven to me (and to America) how hateful you folks are. President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, for his efforts, his vision and HIS DESIRE for PEACE. @ joanne walker: where was your outrage when Bush was doubling our national debt? The far-right has proven once more that they are lousy losers. The gracious thing to do, the CHRISTIAN thing to do and say, is congratulations! PLEASE PRESIDENT OBAMA END THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN! PS. THE WAR IN IRAQ, COST .......$3 TRILLION......... YTD. |
