A double dose of tragedy in the South Pacific. Another earthquake strikes.  Thousands of people are reportedly trapped. We'll take you inside the rescue effort.   Plus, a five-year-old takes on an alligator. A 40 pound boy versus an 800 pound gator. This kid isn't shy.

Kathy   September 30th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Looking forward to the show tonight. Hi everyone!

John-Winnipeg, Manitoba. Canada   September 30th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Hiya Anderson and Erica. How are you doing tonight? The devastation in the Philippines, Somoa and Indonesia is horrible.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Yes Heather,
That is so scary earthquake, I had drill at home and school, how to evacute and keep away from windows, poles, everywhere.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Hello Anderson.

starr, Santa Fe   September 30th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Hello Anderson, Erica & entire Team 360.
Good evening fellow bloggers.

The two earthquakes so close in time and area is deeply concerning.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Good Evening

Very sad about this news

Isabel Siaba, Brazil   September 30th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Good evening, Anderson! Hello David ((Indiana), friends and bloggers!

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Hello everyone!

Kathy Chicago   September 30th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Mother Nature has reared her fury. I was just thinking how lucky we've been with no hurricanes. My thoughts and prayers are with those suffering.

Dulcie - Denver   September 30th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica and bloggers.

These quakes are quite frightening. How strange for them to happen so close together. Thanks for bringing us this story. I've tried to keep up with it all day.

Cynthia, NC   September 30th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Good evening. My thoughts and prayers go out to those in the South Pacific affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Such tragic images…….brings back the memories of the 2004 tsunami.

Paula, Colorado   September 30th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi!
The earthquake reports are alarming. I hope the people there are or will receive more assistance in their recovery effort–as the situation becomes more difficult.

gail   September 30th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

@ Anderson
Please do not show that picture of President Obama with a Hitler mustache even as an illustration. It is an image that has no place , period.

starr, formerly known as vincent   September 30th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Certainly, our (family & friends) thoughts and prayers are with all of the people affected by both earthquakes and the tsunamis.

David, Indiana   September 30th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica, Isabel, everyone. Looked terrible there in the western Pacific, esp the impact of the tsunami on Samoa, very unnerving to see people in Indonesia seek shelter after the quake there. Phillipines and Viet Nam too have both been hit by typhoon Ketsana too. Int'l Red Cross undoubtedly needs donations.

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Those quakes are bad. The scare the heck out of me.

christaniel   September 30th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

my prayers go with them

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Yes, I am very worried about Pres. Obama's safety! There seems to be very angry people who could be potentially dangerous to Pres. Obama. I hope he has a lot of secret service around him at all time and with his family.

Heather - Spokane, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

I remember the last earthquake I was in, which was the 5 point earthquake that Seattle had back in 1999, and that was scary enough not just being in it but seeing the immense damage it did within the 5 minutes it went on and how it brought Seattle down in elevation. It scares me to think that its possible for something like the one that happened in Indonesia to happen here in the U.S

Jane - Vt   September 30th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

They are dangerously raw politics Anderson.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

There seems to be more rage against this president than any other president in my lifetime and I suspect it could also have to do with his race!

Gayle McCauley Malden,Mass.   September 30th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Greetings to All! Glad to live in the NorthEast where the chance of an earthquake that devastating is rare.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

The angry tone now is no different than the rhetoric from the far left against Bush. The only difference is that the MSM are picking out very selective instances to report on.

Anderson Cooper
CNN
  September 30th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

evening everyone.. thanks for joining us... another quake just hit indonesia..

christaniel   September 30th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

this is very sad I want everybody to pray for these people

Zsu Zsu   September 30th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I am always sad to hear about earthquakes around the world. Having lived in Los Angeles most of my life, I know how frightening and destructive they can be. It always reminds me how fragile our lives are on this moving earth!

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

I was sleeping in bed a few years ago and one hit in another town but the shock was felt in my town. It was something else. Something I will never forget.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Patrick Kennedy's remarks are irresponsible. They are just another ploy to try to keep people from opposing Obama's policies.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

I think these two are minimizing the danger towards Obama...

Stacy Mycorn   September 30th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Mr. Cooper.
Watch you, and CNN all the time. But why on earth would you put te picture of our Commander in Chief on the screen, with the Hitleresk mustache????? NO GOOD

Jane - Vt   September 30th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

@ Gayle I'm shivering here tonight

Fay - CA   September 30th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

There is a lot of denial out there about the atmosphere in the country since President Obama was elected – conservatives have not spoken out stronger against some of the more disturbing elements within their party who are stirring up so much anger.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

@Dodie, this President is proposing more extreme policies than any in my lifetime, so it's getting an more extreme reaction than most. Race isn't the issue. Bill Bennet had a good point.

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

What those poor people are going through. My God.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

The Anger is building in this country against Obama. I am really worried for his safety! I am also worried for his family too!!!

Isabel Siaba, Brazil   September 30th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

@ David, Indiana

This week the nature is angry. I pray that people can re-establish itself and to those who have lost someone that they have forces! It is very sad when the nature of overlap and there is so much chaos. I hope that people can restore their lives.

Kathy Chicago   September 30th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I think that people are just fed up with Washington in general, Rep and Dem. They have combined to run the country into debt, fill their own pockets and then tell us what we need to do to fix it. Obama is no better or worse than all of the others, it is just more in the news. I don't trust any of them.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Heather – Spokane, WA,
Yes, I remember that time I had felt earthquake on Feb 28, 2001 and May 2, 1996........ I have really experience my life look like waves and move round.

gail   September 30th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Yes Anderson the President is at risk. Threats against the President are up 400%. Thomas Friedman is no "nut job" and for Michael Steele to try to dismiss this when he has lived through the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy. If anything happens to this President , God help us all. Also, it only takes one , crazy, unbalanced person to do something horrific. Fomenting hate and dehumanizing this man to make it ok to call him Hitler, Stalin, and in the case on Rep. Trent Franks" an enemy of humanity" will lead to violence!

Sarah, AZ   September 30th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

How many times can you equate Obama to Hitler before some nut job with a gun starts thinking that it's alright to kill him? This is not a game and, unfortunately, those with both the power and responsibility to stop this are doing nothing.

Minou, New York City   September 30th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Jesus! Another quake hit them just now??

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

I'd take Bill Clinton, even with his right wing conspiracy paranoia, over Obama in a heartbeat.

Paula   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Katrina survivor but Mother Nature gave us the option of escape whereas these poor people had no choice.

Vince   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

It's unfortunate how nature's worst side always hits our poorest parts of the world. However, it makes us realize how fortunate some of us are and remind us never to stop reaching out to those less fortunate in the near and far corners of our world.

starr, formerly known as vincent   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I think Bill Bennet is wrong. When you see women crying about the Pres. making a speech to school children, outrageous behaviors at town meetings, rantings by Rush Limbaugh, and so on. Not one Republican is objecting to the things that are being said.

I think that the Rhetoric has gotten completely out of control. The behavior of a Representatie of House is another example of disrepect towards the President.

Words matter. I have yet to see Any conservative or Repblican try to present rational responses to any of the negative and crazy Rhetoric out there.

susan   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I agree with Mr Carville that President Obama is in danger from the right wing where there is so much anger over losing the white house and bigotry against a black president. Their real true colors are showing and talk of treason and comparisons of Obama with Hitler should all be investigated by the CIA and FBI. These are domestic terrorists and much more dangerous than Taliban. They are American Taliban.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

@ Mike, Syracuse, NY

Pres Obama walked into a Huge Mess! Nothing has been seen like this since the 1930s!

David, Indiana   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Well I guess it's "raw out there" as James Cariville is saying about public sentiment, but I was under the impression that congress, dems and republicans are managing to come together over HCR.

Another earthquake in Sumatra? Just horrible. I'm sorry I was a bit late today, how are efforts to rescue those caught in collapsed buildings in Samoa going?

Jane - Vt   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I don't understand what all the extreme policies are. President Obama has a big mess on his hands from years of neglect and congress has been catering to the corporations for years. He's been in office 8 months, what has he done that is so terrible?

Jennifer   September 30th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

It's not about groups, republicans or democrats. It's about one crazy individual who is encouraged by an impression that their actions would be celebrated. Polls on whether you do or don't want the President dead are absolutely inappropriate, and to call it honest dissent is irresponsible.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

@Jo Ann, I agree. The double standard of the left regarding legitimate protest is absolutely staggering.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

@ Mike, Syracuse, NY

Our unemployment is 12% right now in California. I have never seen it this bad... ever

Gayle McCauley Malden,Mass.   September 30th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

@Jane. I know,I could feel the fall creeping in this week...We have such bone chilling winters.

Kelly Swanson- Harrisburg, PA   September 30th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I remember seeing Obama at a rally in Harrisburg and the heavy security, including sharpshooters on all the rooftops. It can't be ignored that he is our first African-American president and some people are enraged by this progress, but it also seems that we've beefed up security to keep him safe.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Hi Anderson,
It is very horrible situation area so devastation..... I agree with you, It is very scary for people....... I hope they need help get donation, food, and water too.

Minou, New York City   September 30th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Saturn? That's a good killin'.

Cessy, Chicago IL   September 30th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Hello! everyone... my sister said the earthquake in Indonesia was 8.3? Oh my....

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

I hope we do not bail out the car company. I would prefer give my tax dollars to secure their retirement benefits that they will be losing.

John-Winnipeg, Manitoba. Canada   September 30th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

@Dodie – California...What about the retirement benefits of all the millions (of others) who have lost their jobs?

David, Indiana   September 30th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

@Isabel Yes, I'm sure people in the affected areas will need all kinds of help.

robert hubbard   September 30th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

omg Anderson... "Sexiling" has been around since my college days... Call it hanger on the door, or sock in front of the door... It happens and making rules against it will bring the issue to light but may do little to make an impact on the urges of the college student.

Cessy, Chicago IL   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

having lived in Manila for 16years, I"ve experienced those bad earthquakes and it is scary...

Arfraja-South Carolina   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

The violent rheoric is very dangerous and should be taken very seriously. There seems to be an increasing boldness when it comes to persons speaking negatively about our President in very public settings. I agree with Rep. Kennedy's statement in reguard to the rhetoric. News media should be very conscience about how they present their information, cause its getting people riled up in a disturbing way.

Kelly Swanson- Harrisburg, PA   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

@ Casey, I've never even heard of an 8.3... wow!

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Big killing in Chicago. Nothing new there.

Heather - Spokane, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

The killings in Chicago is just crazy. When is that going to stop?

chris   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

come on people our future is at stake!

bbaker   September 30th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

FYI Anderson, on the USGS website they show 2 big earthquakes in the that region in the LAST HOUR. Sorry about the caps, one is in the ocean, it looks like. Another Tsunami? Can you tell us?

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

@Mike and JoAnn...there's nothing different with the negative rhetoric. It's all the same. The only thing that chanegs, from administration to administration, is the primary target. It's a wash.

Monica M. Williams   September 30th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Carvel's teaser regarding people unable to control their emotions is not an under-statement.

Have we mutilated the interpretation of "freedom of speech" to justify hateful speech and actions towards others?

Where are the boundaries? Look at the way we depict our president in protest. No one should be shocked our children have learned to have very little respect for life.

starr, formerly known as vincent   September 30th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

@Heather Spokane WA

I too remember those earthquakes. I was in Poulsbo, WA and i t was a rolling type of movement. I was in a rocking chair, and instead of going back and forth, i was going side to side. It made me nauseous.

I'm glad to have moved out of the area as it is overdue for a 9 earthquake!

hi, everyone.

sobering pix of samoa from friends... parents carrying their deceased children to a hospital chapel now being used as a morgue. beyond heartbreaking.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

@ susan

I completely agree. Well at least those people will not have lay-offs! We are looking at furloughs for the first time ever!

Anderson. Both parents have to work these days. The children are raising themselves. They end up going to a gang who assumes their family. Very sad

Kareen   September 30th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

How can Bill Bennet say that "it is the same as it was with President Bush"? I can't believe the horrible signs and comments that are made by these right wing people at the rallies!!! The worst that I saw about Bush was the "Mad Magazine" picture. There were lots of "impeach Bush" signs, but that is a lot different than the Hitler and witch doctor depictions that we see about President Obama. This aught to be banned and for God's sake think about how this appears to the rest of the world!! I believe in free speech, but that doesn't mean that we should tolerate this kind of garbage!

hope   September 30th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

i live in chicago, have a 18yr old son, honor roll student. Every day I am afraid for him. I am embarrassed and ashamed because of all of the violence. Olympics? with all of this mess?

gail   September 30th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

@ Mike
Bull, Race may not be the whole issue , but it is a part of it. It is used against the President now just as it was during the campaign . Make him the other , make him , "not one of us", make his desire to help the people that need help and get others that have more pay their fair share , and solve some of the problems that have been allowed to fester as somehow extreme. What's extreme are the lengths that the far right has gone to to portray this good honest and decent man as some sort of menace to society and a danger to children. What angers me the most is that rather than argue on the merits of a policy all the right can do is whisper in a large tone that does not go unnoticed is " did you know he's black." Yeah we know Mike and for some us it doesn't matter , but to some of the American people , unfortunately , it still does.

Cessy, Chicago IL   September 30th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Martial Law may do this city good but we all know that the juvenile detention here and other jails are already packed....where would we put them once they are picked up?

chris   September 30th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

we need disiplan

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

The cops are leaving Chicago because they dont want to get killed.

Brian   September 30th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

How come those of us in the Pacific,US Terriorties of Guam and the Northern Marianas have to watch CNN Coverage of China.. CNN International prempted your show...when we are starving for information about the devastation on American Somoa, and the condition of our fellow Pacific US islanders? WHY?

Minou, New York City   September 30th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

@ Erica: that is truly horrible and heartbreaking! I hope your friends are alright...

Teresa, OH   September 30th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Gary was too easy on the council woman.....

Would I be out of line to ask why the PARENTS cant help more?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

It would help the police if those in these neighborhoods didn't stonewall investigations for fear of being labelled a snitch. There is a culture on noncooperation.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

The problem with continuing to throw tax dollars at the Chicago youth crime problem is that we're treating the symptoms. We're not dealing with the root(s) of the problem. You MUST look at the bigger picture, starting with sex education and people who have children who are not prepared to be parents.

Fay - CA   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Many of the kids in Chicago have little parental guidance and they don't value themselves or others–they don't think they have a future and there's a large sense of hopelessness–this is a too-common thing within the inner city.

Anthonia-Bay Area,California   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

@Dodie- I agree, califronia use to be the prime of all jobs, now its worst than ever before!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

We need to hold these parents responsible. The government is not a baby sitter and is not there to raise their kids. The problem lies with these parents and the kids themselves.

If kids are raised without morals or respect for themselves and others this is what you end up with.

Jana, Indiana   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

If the Chicago police can't protect their own citizens, how can they protect the visitors to t he Olympics?

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

I do not agree he was killed by his "peers." Peers means someone like you. That mob behaved like animals.

Kelly Swanson- Harrisburg, PA   September 30th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Conflict resolution and self regulation skills are taught in early childhood. Another reason why quality early education is so important especially for at-risk children. It helps them learn ways to deal with anger and conflict that are more productive.

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

@Mike – very true. I am from Illinois.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Minou, New York City   September 30th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Great point Anderson. If these people don't come forward what do they expect?

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Anderson: Everyone is living in Fear!!!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Obama should speak to the parents and the kids in his old stomping grounds. Maybe they will listen to him.

Cessy, Chicago IL   September 30th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

@ Kelly S, PA-yesterday's earthquake was between 8.0-8.3 on the Richter scale...very very scary...

We need stop violence each other, too much trouble the teenagers!!! I think we need stop gangs hit, kick, or push down, are not acceptable violence our school.. Zero!!!!!

Michael Silverman   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

As a teacher in New York City, I see this type of violence constantly. Teenagers are constantly planning, discussing, and acting out violence against one another. Simply walking down the hall, one can overhear the conversation of who might be attacked later in the day. It is culturally acceptable in America for our teenagers to fight. It is not a random event. I'm actually shocked the media finds this so surprising. Where are you guys?

Minou, New York City   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

I've seen grown men here in Harlem with Dont Snitch t-shirts.

Jeff - Los Angeles   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Violence is a direct result of a loss of hope.

You give these kids hope, you give them a way out, something to live up to and they will respond.

When they don't have hope, there won't be change.

JW

Pam - San Diego, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

No tips and no call in's to the Police. Know why? because the gangs will settle it between each other. Like they have for years and years.

Krista-Wabash, IN   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Hello Anderson! I am a huge fan of yours. I am excited about tonight's 360 report. I am devastated to hear of another quake in Indonesia. I hope you can cover on a lot of what's being done to help those people. Efficiency is key, on those of us who have much, to help those who are struggling.

David, Indiana   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

If it weren't for the credit crisis, the auto companies would have skyrocketting profits.

If no one has called in in Chicago, how did they apprehend the four suspects they have in custody?

I'm sorry but I didn't get how long from the start of the incident to the 911 call. How long was it?

george k   September 30th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Anderson, perhaps a way to end the Stop Snitch problem is to charge some of the folks that are standing around watching with being accomplices to murder. Perhaps hiring a famous rapper to do a marketing campaign saying doing one's moral duty is not being a snitch, it is being honorable.

Isabel Siaba, Brazil   September 30th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Good night Anderson and friends!
I'm out of the transmission of AC360 today, unfortunately.

See you tomorrow!

I was at work at the time of that earthquake and it was so bad I could see the fire sprinklers shaking and the hanging lights that were on the ceiling were swinging so hard they could have went through the ceiling. I do worry that we get an earthquake big enough that it sparks Mt Rainier or Mt St Helens to erupt

Anderson, part of the reason the people in the video may not have called 911 or otherwise tried to help is something called Bystander Effect–It's also called Diffusion of Responsibility, and is under the umbrella of what we consider "groupthink" or even "mob mentality." When a group of people watches a crime taking place, often no one calls for help. The primary three reasons are that 1. you automatically assume that someone else must have and your 911 call will just clutter things and get in the way, 2. you second-guess what you're seeing and you don't want to be the person who cried wolf, 3. the first thing we all do in a situation like this is to monitor the reaction of everybody else watching to see if*those* people are reacting as if the event is a crisis–since everybody is doing that, nobody picks up panic from anybody else. Bizarrely, the findings state that the more bystanders there are, the*less* likely it is that any one of them will help.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

@JoAnn...you hit the nail on the head. These kids don't have any self-respect to begin with, let alone respect for their lives and the lives of others. That's what they learn (I'm guessing) in music and videos.

starr, formerly known as vincent   September 30th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

The situation in Chicago with so many innocent children being killed is mind boggling.

There HAS to be a way to address this situation.

I can't believe the "don't snitch" has so much power over the citizens of Chicago, although i do understand that people do not want to be murdered themselves.

However, people need to take their city back and start helping the Police...it's the only way.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

@Dodie, people can always provide information on an anonymous basis. Until the people in these communities decide to cooperate with the law the situation will not improve. Their fate is in their own hands.

Collette   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Like my friend says, we have to get to the youth on the inside; trying to change the violence from the outside, is too late.

Mike, Las Vegas   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

@Mike, Syracuse, NY – Can you enumerate these supposed "extreme policies" that you claim the President is proposing? Or are you just repeating the talking points the right is using to gin up opposition to anything and everything the President says and does. Everything the President proposes is automatically labeled by the unhinged right as socialist/marxist/communist/nazi without any regard for the facts to the contrary.

Heather - Spokane, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Its obvious that the City of Chicago is not doing anything to stop the violence there, its especially obvious after that interview

Theresa, Des Moines   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

If we want to be world leader in human rights, we can’t let Roman Polanski off the hook. Western nations recently chastised the Afghan government for passing a law that allowed Afghan men to rape their wives. How can we then say, it’s ok for a man to drug and rape a 13-year-old and then flee justice for over 30 years just because he’s wealthy, famous, talented, and troubled?

Kelly Swanson- Harrisburg, PA   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

The only reasons I can imagine there would be no tips is either people think nothing will be done to bring the killers to justice or they are too scared for their own safety.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

@ Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio

Those kids do not care about any president. The parents are often afraid of their own kids.

You have to have lived in an inner city high violence to know that.

Leesah   September 30th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

I live in the Chicagoland area. I'm tired of our dollars being poured into these low income communities and NOTHING is being done with it. Instead of constantly asking for even more money, someone should ask what happened to the money that was already given to these communities? Did it reach to the community, if not why?

Fred   September 30th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I work in Residential Life in a college campus in central New York. I have supervised a group of RAs for a few years now, and know that many residents complain about being sexiled. I wish this was a new phenomenon, however – incoming students continued to be focused on self more and more – and forget that they live in a community where their choices effect those around them. Many of these students are not willing to confront their roommate to resolve the situation – and instead look for rules to save them. I think these situations could be prevented if students took the opportunity to talk to each other, be open and honest, and consider, "how does my choice effect people around me."

Cessy, Chicago IL   September 30th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Anderson-yes, unfortunately THAT is the definition of a snitch... having to work with young children and adolescents who belong or affifliated with gangs, it is hard to understand why they would rather keep their mouth shut than help their peers who are in trouble...it seems that their loyalty is to the people who will never be there for them when times get tough. I,too, have a hard time understanding this....

Michael J   September 30th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Talk about the cause of the tsunami in samoa and the earthquakes in Sumatra. Might want to investigate the krakatoa volcano. Last time all this happened it blew and killed 30,000 people.

Su from Fort Lee, NJ   September 30th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Social services, more police and longer school days are not the solution. How can you expect kids to respect others & value of a life when they don't respect themselves? Why – maybe b/c they've never been respected since they were little. Maybe they were told they are no good, they can't learn, they're trouble makers , there's no hope. And we expect them to change themselves with more violence & discipline?
They have to learn to respect and value their own lives and talents – from school, teachers, parents, big brother/big sister, etc. You can't take a dying and diseased tree when roots have already rotted. It has to be nurtured as a tree is taking root...

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Damaris   September 30th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Anderson,
I can not believe the alderwomen has no or little idea what to do. I taught in a Chicago high school for many years and would often tell students that adults do not handle matters by hurting each other. Well, many kids would often say my parents do. They would also share, "if I fight, I better win or I'll get it when I get home." That strongly suggests the culture of many homes. Reeducate the parents on proper life skills and then the kids but don't ask for more police!

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Thank you for the clarification of the charges and the legal terms Whoopee and Anderson. If we want to blame anyone, we should be blaming the "sensational" judge who blew it, royally. I completely understand people coming to Polanski's defense at this point. I don't like any of this, but I get the point and I can't argue with it.

Jim   September 30th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Kids or adults, homicide is homicide. It would be interesting to review why the homicide rate is so different country to country. The 2008 rates for the Olympic contending cities for homicide is: Tokyo 1:100,000; Madrid: 2:100,000, Chicago: 18:100,000, and Rio: 33:100,000.

Michael J   September 30th, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Polanski needs to be jailed. I am sick of stars getting preferential treatment. Bye bye Justice, cash is here.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Why is Randi Kaye trying to play down Polanski's guilt. Giving a "sliver" of a drug to a kid is still a criminal act and no matter what the judge did Polanski is still a scumbag pedophile and should be punished.

Krista-Wabash, IN   September 30th, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Regardless of a plea bargain, Polanski had sex with a minor and he should be held accountable. Why should his status as a director make a difference?

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

All I can say is just because Roman Polanski is famous and old doesn't mean that he is the angel his peers think he is...

Fay - CA   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I can't imagine how those celebrities can seriously defend what Polanski did. "Protecting their own" is not a good enough reason, what Polanski did was reprehensible and he needs pay for his crime.

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

What? They are looking for a part in his next movie or what?

Karen Gonyea MN   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Not Rape? Really? A grown man having sex with a 13 year old is very wronge!

Mike, Syracuse, NY   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

True point, a judge is under no obligation to honor any plea deal. Polanski should be charged with all the original felony charges.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I guess Polanski is getting a lot of support from the Hollywood community because this is acceptable behavior for that bunch.

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Aaron   September 30th, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Polanski should have long ago, gone down like any other rapist, he should pay for his crime. He pleaded guilty

Anthony Crisafi   September 30th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Polanski should be prosecuted for his crime, and if found guilty should go to jail. What he did was inexcusable.

Krista-Wabash, IN   September 30th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

I also agree that stars need to quit getting 'star' treatment.
Its ridiculous what our 'justice' system allows.
Not to mention the cash flow 'under the table'.
The American justice system really disgusts me sometimes.

Gayle McCauley Malden,Mass.   September 30th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

I agree with Joy...so what,he should be prosecuted. If all the people that have gone through this called out their molesters, there would be a lot more people in jail, trust me! Perhaps if he does serve time it may deter others from seeking out victims for their own exploitation and save some one a life time of heartache and confusion.

Ashley H, Canada   September 30th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Hi everyone.

What time did this new earthquake just strike? What was the magnitude?

@Anderson: You've been to Sri Lanka after the tsunami in 2004, what was it like when you went?

How much damage can a ten foot tsunami cause?

David, Indiana   September 30th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

30 years later how important is it to punish someone for not serving a 90 day sentence? Or is the sentence longer now?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

@Mike, Syracuse, NY, I agree completely! I am not surprised by their attitude because this is acceptable behavior for that bunch.

Sabrina in Los Angeles   September 30th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

I feel that Polanski should serve his time and said so on set Thursday...maybe that is why I have not been on set since....lol...Or there just isn't work right now.

I can't believe the twisted thoughts of those in my town.

HE did the crime, he was allowed out of the country to finish a film and ditched....I think they would call that bail jumping in any other terms.

HE needs to do the time he was sentenced to...Do the crime, do the time.

Statutory rape is consensual with someone underage. This wasn't consensual so yes it really was 'rape rape'.

Polanski should have been sent to trial and jail all those years ago. The fact that people and Hollywood elite believe we should allow him to remain free sends a blaring message to children their victimizations don't have value. What a sick society?

Erica Hill
CNN

Interesting point Lisa brought up about the feelings of the French toward Polanski.

My sister lives in France, my brother-in-law is French, and the outrage from both of them tonight watching people defend Polanski on the news and on a debate show was intense. Another reminder of how important it is to not generalize and lump people into one category. I think it's safe to say all of Hollywood is not behind Woody Allen et al, as well.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   September 30th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

@Dodie, California, That is why my family moved to the suburbs.

A broken wrist is an existing condition? On what planet.......?

betsy   September 30th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Does no one understand that, regardless of whetehr Polanski is guilty or innocent, his crime now is that he fled the court's jursidiction. He had no right to do that. He has lived over 30 years in freedom, and now people want to protect hi because "the judge was not going to honor the deal." Whatever happened to the rule of law? How can anyone defend this man's unilateral decision to flee to live a life of luxury without the guts to face whatever the judge decided – with the right of appeal?

Dodie - California   September 30th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Erica!

Yes... I completely agree. Very dangerous to lump everyone together and draw assumptions from that strategy.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   September 30th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Hey Anderson, nice stripes! (though you look better in solids)
Receiving no tips at all is such a strange (non-) occurance, but the investigation should be able to rely on more than just a few phone tips – haven't they identified 4 of the participants already?
How is Washington going fix this? Let's hope our policymakers come up with a better solution, because the effectiveness of their past 100$ million is certainly questionable.

starr, formerly known as vincent   September 30th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Excellent report by Tom Foreman.

Insurance co.'s exist to make profits. As a nurse who worked as a medical consultant for insurance co.'s, i can tell you some adjusters act as though the insurance money is theirs. They very often do not want to pay out. And, often bonuses are gfven to adjusters who save the insurance company the most money.

sven   September 30th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I'm glad Lisa got her view across on Polanski. I agree that the rich and famous think they are above the law or scrutiny and he should be held accountable if he didn't fulfill his plea deal.

Fay - CA   September 30th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Does anyone REALLY believe that insurance companies are actually interested in looking out for consumers? Wendell Potter is right.

Hi Anderson and Erica,

This one is a real downer tonight... The devastation in the Pacific, killings in Chicago, and anger against President Obama. I had to turn the show off-getting sick of seeing what is happening in our country. How did we become so angry and hateful?

I had a breast MRI at the Mayo Clinic because my old sister has breast cancer. My insurance company didn’t want to pay for the bill. They said they weren’t sure my sister had cancer. Really? My sister has had both breast removed and has been on chemo for most of 7 years. What a scam! After a lot of work on my end they finally paid the bill.

Private companies with private records pay taxes and those records are public are they not?

It is ridiculous that the woman in W. Virginia's broken arm was covered and then regarded as a pre-existing condition. Great instance of the need for health insurance reform. That's part of what's going on in congress right now though.

I hope all the heated rhetoric doesn't make people turn away from the proposed health care reforms.

I'm a medical billing advocate. I help people with mountains of medical bills get what they are entitled to. The Medical Billing Advocates of America estimates that 9 out of 10 medical bills have some kind of an error. That doesn't even deal with the insurance companies playing games to avoid paying correct bills. Patients should fight back Hire a medical billing advocate to help you - most of us work on contingency - if we don't find you savings and get your claims straightened out, you don't pay us.

Hello Anderson,
Huge fan and first comment on the blog.

Of course, Health Insurance Companies make life very difficult for people; as a finance person this is simple for me, and I coach others on this stuff. I am passonate about those who are very ill, trying to get better, and have added stress to deal with insurance.

How much is "left on the table" from consumers – I would love to personally audit the Insurance Co records! I guarantee I would find a bundle !! Let's team up for this investigation!

Keep up the great work! My best....Tracy
