Prescribed opioids - pain medication - have become the fastest-growing addiction problem in the United States. They are second to marijuana as the most commonly used illicit substances.

Vicodin and OxyContin lead the way among our youth; the 2008 "Monitoring the Future Study" by the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that 9.7 percent of high school seniors have misused Vicodin and 4.7 percent OxyContin.

There is a naïve consensus that these are safe medications because they are prescribed by physicians. However, they are extremely reinforcing, highly addictive and in the same class of drugs as heroin.

Anyone ever stop to wonder what it is we are all trying to cover up with our prescriptions and are illegal drugs? Anyone ever wonder why we are all hurting so? Me neither.

Script drug addiction has gotten way out of hand. There definitely needs to be some sort of a national system that these pharmacies can hook into and see how many docs people are going to. Then there needs to be a serious crackdown on docs who give, give and give drugs just to make money. It's getting ridiculous. Unless these things are done this problem will just get way worse.

I always thought myself was safe and controlled on medication. Until this weekend I felt bad, I felt so much pain, it was inevitable to use (and abuse) of drugs.

I was scared with my attitude in the midst of a situation of despair.
Now I understand it is difficult to judge how someone in such a situation.
