August 10th, 2009 1:47 pm ET Mexico is a very corrupt and dysfunctional country, even worse than we are, and maybe they just need a revolution to make a clean sweep of everything. That said, I have never believed the answer to drugs is simply more cops, more troops and more jails. That's already been done for 30 years. We need to use more soft power or smart power, not conventional war strategies. That means more social and economic development, education, health care, drug treatment, and yes, more birth control, family planning and abortion services. We need to start dispersing the people out of the segregated ghettos in this country, at least very gradually/ Nor do I think we can do anything about illegal immigrants unless there is more internal development and improved living standards in Mexico and other Latin American countries. More border guards, card checks and fences will not fix it. They need something to go home TO so they will leave here. |

August 10th, 2009 6:01 pm ET Since a "War" on anything breeds more of the same we need to try something else. I mean what has the 'war on drugs' gotten us? Nothing! Only more drugs & war! So I say we should have a war on 'Love'. Can you imagine Americans walking around saying to one another; "I love YOU, No, no I love you MORE! Yes, let's delare "war on love and never look for the end! Then I bet we'll see some real changes. Love is the most powerful force there is. |
