We’ve just learned that former CBS newsman Walter Cronkite has died at the age of 92. Tonight we’ll look back on his life and legacy.

President Obama cleared his schedule today to discuss what he calls his top domestic priority: health care reform. A recent report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office claims that proposed health care legislation won’t reduce long term costs. Moderate senators are now urging for a slower timetable. But the President remains confident that it will happen this year. In fact, he says anyone who believes the opposite is “badly mistaken.” Could the battle for health care reform be contributing to President Obama’s sliding approval ratings? Ed Henry, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Dana Bash join us tonight for more on the intensifying debate.

We also have the latest details on the deadly hotel blasts in Jakarta, Indonesia. Witnesses are being interrogated and evidence is being collected at the J.W Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels. Who’s responsible for the suicide attacks? What’s interesting is these hotels are known for tough security. They scan the luggage of every guest for possible explosives. That leads us to another question: How did the suicide bombers pull of the attack? Tonight we’ll talk with Alan Orlob, V.P. of corporate security at the Marriott.

And, there’s new information on the murder of a Florida couple known for adopting special needs children. While friends and family gathered at the victim’s funeral for an emotional goodbye, police have found the family’s safe, and maintain that the murder was a “choreographed home invasion robbery”. But with the DEA, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI all involved, could this be more than just a robbery? David Mattingly is on the scene, digging deeper.

Finally, don’t forget to watch our one hour special on President Obama’s trip to Ghana, and his exclusive interview with Anderson at 11pm ET.

See you at 10pm ET for these stories and more!

I loved Walter Cronkite. RIP sir.

I grew up watching Walter on the CBS Nightly News. There will never be another journalist/commentator like him. He was bigger than life, telling us the way it was. His exact words at the end of his broadcasts: "that the way it is". He was an honest person, and very rarely gave his opinion, while giving the news, unlike today. When he did, it was correct. God bless you Walter!

Lot of news tonight – any new details on the Florida tragedy will be interesting but I am looking forward to seeing what you have on Walter Cronkite. For a lot of us he was the first anchor we were aware of and he defined the word/job for us. We knew that when Walter told the story it was the real deal. Looking forward to the show.

If the reporters want to take some of Walter Cronkite's attributes with them....show less bias.....report the facts ......

That is why people could trust him....

Connie   July 17th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Walter Cronkite shared the same passion that Tim Russert had for the news....for history.....

That was the reason for his success.

My sympathy to his family, I love him. Pls give him a befitting coverage like Michael Jackson had.

The best of a profession. I wonder if this passing will get as long a viewing as MJ?

Terri from Atlanta   July 17th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

I heard Walter Cronkite tell a great story. He says this kept his ego in check. He was in a boat with his wife. Another boat went by and shouted out, "Hello, Walter". He waved back enthusiastically.
He felt good to be recognized. His wife tersely said, "They weren't saying "Hello, Walter". They were shouting, "Low Water!"

I'm just old enough to remember watching Mr. Cronkite on the CBS Evening News in black and white. No, there are not too many news men quite like Walter Cronkite. Or news women for that matter. Although Anderson, I will say you sir are getting much closer.

I've been missing Cronkite for years but I'm happy to say that anchors like John King and Anderson Cooper have followed in his footsteps by not making themselves the story, sticking to the facts and being honest.

I also grew up watching Walter Cronkite, couldn't help shedding several tears. God bless him and his family.

Agree with Donna from TN. but this is Walter's Day!

Ever since there has been a tv in my home there has been
Walter Cronkite!!
HE was believable and the very best in his profession!

Sabrina In Las Vegas   July 17th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Just so sad.

The measure by which every journalist is now measured.

David Allen   July 17th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

I'm watching your coverage and I like it. But you need to cover Cronkite's coverage of the civil rights movement. Too much coverage of the Kennedy assissination and man on the moon. Civil rights had gotten little national attention until the early sixties. This is important!

Kathy, Andover   July 17th, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I remember Walter Cronkite on the TV, with the smell of dinner cooking . . . a warm, secure feeling.

Anthony Ching   July 17th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Sounds like a great line-up tonight. Good luck.
