Elizabeth Taylor declined an invitation to speak about her friend Michael Jackson at his public memorial because she "cannot be part of the public whoopla," the legendary actress said in an online message Monday.
Taylor, 77, posted the message on her Twitter.com account - DameElizabeth - saying she was invited to speak at the Staples Center memorial in Los Angeles set for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
"I just don't believe that Michael would want me to share my grief with millions of others," Taylor tweeted. "How I feel is between us. Not a public event."
Taylor, who uses a wheelchair because of scoliosis, or abnormal curving of the spine, said she would not attend the public memorial.
"I certainly don't want to become a part of it," she said. "I love him too much."
She added, "And I cannot guarantee that I would be coherent to say a word."
Her publicist, Dick Guttman, confirmed the messages were from Taylor, who regularly posts short messages to her 75,000 Twitter followers.
Guttman could not say if Taylor planned to attend the private memorial service set 8 a.m. Tuesday at a Los Angeles cemetery.
Taylor posted several tweets Sunday about Jackson, including one aimed at shooting down tabloid reports that his death had sent her into a deep depression.
"Although my grief over Michael could not be any deeper, I am not on suicide watch as some of the cheaper 'rags' would have you believe," Taylor tweeted.
She also informed fans that she would be checking into a hospital "Wednesday or Thursday to complete a test I was in the middle of."
Taylor opened her Twitter account earlier this year at the suggestion of her close friend, model-actress-author-businesswoman Kathy Ireland, Guttman said.

July 6th, 2009 6:37 pm ET I don't blame her. If anyone knew him, she did. If that's what she thinks he'd have wanted, more power to her. |

July 6th, 2009 6:45 pm ET I think she is attending the private one and that is why she couldn't attend the public one. I think she doesn't want anyone to see her so sad. |

July 6th, 2009 6:49 pm ET I think that she is to frail and not in best position to speak at Michael Jackson's memorial. The death of Michael Jackson hit so many around the world very hard but Elizabeth Taylor is hurting deeply because she is such a close friend of The King Of Pop. I respect Elizabeth Taylor's decision to not speak on behalf of Michael Jackson as it would probably be to hard for her even though I would have loved to hear her speak about her friend. July 6th, 2009 6:53 pm ET I agree with Ms. Taylor's comments. This has become a circus. No respect for the late Michael Jackson. It's become a venue to make money. From the tickets sold on EBay to the Staples Center: Food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available inside both venues from 8:00 AM to 9:45 AM. No outside food or beverage items are permitted in the venues. You know there will be vendors outside looking to sell T-Shirts and bobble head dolls. |

July 6th, 2009 6:58 pm ET Liz Taylor is a legend in her own rights. She had a great friend and I agree that she needs her privacy. Lots of love to her , the love and the memory of MJ will linger on forever. |

July 6th, 2009 7:24 pm ET Good for you dame Elizabeth. I trust you over Rev. Sharpton and his entourage any day when it comes to what Michael would have wished. There is no way Michael would support such a fiasco which they are turning his memorial into. Surely it would be possible to allow his minions (or at least some of them) fans a fair chance at a proper farewell. This whole idea of the "selection process" of his fans is an unfair joke. Unfortunately, I don't know any of his real fans that are laughing. |

July 6th, 2009 7:41 pm ET I applaud Dame Elizabeth for not attending. Unfortunately, the "memorial" has become more of a spectacle with scalpers selling tickets to it. Disgusting. While many, many true admirers of Michael's charitable works and music will only be able to watch on television, not having been picked by a computer. And why the computer gave people two tickets–so people could sell them-is mystifying. I'm glad I got to see him in 3 of his VICTORY Tour concerts and was right near the stage. Michael was a great entertainer and philanthropist. I just wish there could have been more concerts-and I hope the "doctors" involved in his death-the drug peddlers-will be arrested and sent to jail. But even still, it won't bring Michael back.. What a loss. |

July 6th, 2009 8:46 pm ET Tears, they are a language and say all that Dame Taylor and all of us who love Michael need to say. Our collective tears for him would fill an ocean. We should honor MJ the way each of us feel is best. He will be looking on and his Spirit, now safe and free, very present at the public memorial and for each of our private memorials, sending us his gentle waves of love to let us know he watches and feels our love to him. |

July 6th, 2009 11:42 pm ET I am glad to hear that someone has some sense in this Michael Jackson frenzy. My goodness~he was simply a man who was talented...and his friends should be able to mourn his death in their own way. Not everyone enjoys putting their grief before millions of people. It's almost like idolatry. People are losing their minds over his death...and they didn't even know him. I have however, enjoyed hearing his music being played again. Where were all those videos before his death? It's a shame you have to die before people still show their interest in you. Hopefully, his children will be well cared for. The media circus must end though and people need to get on with their lives. The man has been dead for about 10 days already. It's time to move on. Life is for the living! |

July 7th, 2009 7:54 am ET In all honesty, when I heard of Jackson's death. I thought of Dame Elizabeth first. I believe they were extremely close. Ms. Taylor in her time has lost so many friends, young and many times in tragedy. I respect her for not going in for all the hoopla. She remembers, she'll never forget. She's much stronger than people giver her credit for. No one gives her Carp, I like that about her. RIP Michael. |
