Evening, Anderson!
Live to Paris...This is chic, huh!

Hi friends, David (Indiana), bloggers, 360 team …

Let's go to the tango!? :)

Rafael Bronx,NY   June 24th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Hey Anderson and Erica and all the bloogers

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

HeY BlOgGeRs! Hopefully you had an awesome Wednesday!

At least a better one than Governor Sanford did. :D

Jennifer - Michigan   June 24th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Good evening – what a day of news ey? Nice to see you Erica.

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   June 24th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Good Evening Everyone!

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   June 24th, 2009 10:01 pm ET

The private life of a public official is nobody’s business and I could care less what governor is doing what with whom. That said, when you actively advocate and vote to remove people’s constitutional rights because of some mis-placed moral judgment, then you’re fair game when it’s you acting immorally.

hi, everyone. what a press conference today from SC gov sanford

Rikki, Fargo, ND   June 24th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Good evening everyone...

...I was glad to see that Governor Sanford's wife wasn't standing there being all supportive of him...Though unfortunately this story isn't rare...

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

It is important that people who have public positions are "above bar" in their personal relationships, or at least trying to live way ruled, showing respect first by basic social bond that is formed: the family.

starr formerly known as vincent   June 24th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Hello Anderson, (glad to see you back) & team 360.

Hello fellow bloggers, looking forward to our conversation tonight.

Kristen, MD   June 24th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Hey folks

Fay - California   June 24th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Beautiful Paris backdrop.

Another politician having to make an embarrassing public apology for cheating – when will they learn?

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

@Erica, I was very pleased to see that his wife wasn't right next to him.

Jennifer - Michigan   June 24th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Such a sad situation with the Gov.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   June 24th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

If the Governor referred to "God's Law" once more during the press conference I would have ripped my TV off the wall. How dare he use "God" as a shield to gain sympathy.

anthonia-california   June 24th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Heeey everyone!!

I dont understand why that govenor would ever think about cheating on his wife! he could of just told his wife its over, and filed a divorce case!

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

@ Erica

Evening!

Nonsense history of the governor, huh!

Kristen, MD   June 24th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Gov. Sanford is a jerk and his tears are only from being caught. When will men start thinking with their brain instead of something else?

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

It is desirable to keep the respect of their own family first and then to the governed. There should be separation between "marriage & career." The Governor can not live in a state of concealment and dishonesty to his family, and then commanding respect and power in his office.

starr formerly known as vincent   June 24th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I knew his behavior (SC Gov) was suspicious. Frankly, i thought he had some kind of breakdown.

Certainly did not expect the drama and the detail at his press conference. I'll say one thing, he is at least honest (now).

Bloggers- what do you think will happen to his political career?

Minou, New York City   June 24th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

The gov. talks way too much! TMI

Rafael Bronx,NY   June 24th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I hope that Sanford and his family can get all this straighten up and move on. It's sad to hear that another gov had an affair.

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I am very disturbed that during the entire press conference, people were behind Sanford smiling....What's there to smile at? :(

Jennifer - Michigan   June 24th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

He should've left her first!!!!! Then, do whatever he wants.

Curtis   June 24th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Truly, this wouldn't be news except for the fact that the Governor is a hypocrite, relative to his professional life as well as his personal life.

Jennifer in NoVA   June 24th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Welcome back Anderson! Glad to see you. :)

Considering it's what 4am... would imagine you'd love a cup of coffee... iced, but coffee nonetheless.

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   June 24th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Why do they feel so guilty after the act is done? It seems to me they want their cakes and eat it too.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and Erika...

I really loved those young women in the background giggling while this guy tries to poor his heart out.

Great coverage and wow looked like a fun press conference. Its kinda like Santa came early...no punn intended

Paula, Colorado   June 24th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi! It's great to see you back on air tonight–especially in such a beautiful location.

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

We live modern times, most relationships stripped ...
there should be no treason

Rikki, Fargo, ND   June 24th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

So he told his wife about it and then went to Argentina and continued the affair?...It wasn't supposed to be this way? Is it ever really supposed to end up like this?

Catherine - Chicago   June 24th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Thank goodness they moved that smiling girl in the background who is just too happy to be on tv. Who are those people? That's so distracting.

Minou, New York City   June 24th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Now the hunt for the woman in Argentina is on! Leave her alone, media. Funny, how there is absolutely no respect for privacy.

Dawn   June 24th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

I can't believe we are going through this again! My heart goes out to those precious boys.

Sharon Hastings   June 24th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Hello Anderson in Paris, team, all bloggers. I have not much to say about Governor Sanford. Some sympathy but not overly much. Choices. Life is a series of choices we make on a daily basis. But how many blows can the Republican Party take? How the mighty have fallen. My sympathy is directed toward the brave Iranians who are just trying to be heard and who are yearning for a better life.

Cynthia, NC   June 24th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Good evening.

Local TV news and talk radio was all over the Gov Sanford story today. I listened to a Charlotte talk radio show on the way home today and more than half of the callers (most from SC) feel the governor should step down. How as governor does he leave not only his state, but the country as well, and his staff have no idea how to get in contact with him?

Rafael Bronx,NY   June 24th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Is Sanford going to resign or is he going to stay as gov?

Krasi   June 24th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Well, there you go. The wife forgives even though he says he has always been unfaithful. What????

David, Indiana   June 24th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Evening Anderson, are you in Paris? very nice. Evening Erica, Isabel, everyone.

A gut wrenching press conference that the SC Governor called today. I think he was very courageous today. His personal life doesn't seem to me to be anyone businesses except his own and his family.

JoAnn   June 24th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

So sad, power does not allow you to be dishonest! Using the position you are entrusted to, to further your own needs is just wrong. What a terrible ordeal to put your family through!!

LorenaR   June 24th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I noticed that the governor almost choked on the phrase "twenty years" perhaps he realized at that moment that the better half of the marriage, his wife, had lasted 20 years but he had not been able to.
probably a bit too long for him.

Dulcie - Denver   June 24th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I'm sorry, but when you campaign on 'family values', then you leave the country to have an affair with a woman other than your wife without a word to anyone, well... You deserve what you get.

Man, the Republican party is just imploding left and right. I realize that infidelity isn't limited to the Republican party. Democrats have done it too, but rarely are they as narrow-minded and holier-than-thou as these two latest examples

Annie Kate   June 24th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

I give the governor credit for at least not expecting his wife not to stand beside him when he made his public apology. That was a nice change.

Anderson – I envy you being in Paris. Such a beautiful city.

Casey Jones, Palm Springs, CA   June 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

I guess money can't buy hapiness. Based on Jenny Sanford's posturing as she was handing out her statement to the media today, I would highly doubt this (fake) marriage has much stamina left.

Jennifer - Michigan   June 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

It doesn't matter at all who the woman in Argentina is – that's trivial information. He's the one who is married!

mark chinelli   June 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

who paid for his trip to argintina?

Yankee   June 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

I now understand why Gov. Sanford (R) SC did not want the Stimulus for South Carolina. He was already getting HIS Stimulus.

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

interesting how this whole affair got started with a pen pal relationship....it's almost as bad as the internet....

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

These old guys need to lay off of the Viagra! Frankly, I am pretty tired of all these excuses. This guy is an adulterer, nobody was holding a gun to his head.

He was willing to drag his wife and kids through the mud in order to satisfy his own selfish desires.

If he could not stay true to his own wedding vows how can the voters have any confidence in what he promises them?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

It was reported earlier that Sanford was reachable by cell phone the whole time he was gone. What's the truth?

@Rafael, if Clinton didn't resign, why should Sanford?

Lisa   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

What is the Governor's stance on off-shore drilling?

Steve - southern Illinois   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

I'm no fan of republicans but I believe only those who are without sin should be casting stones at Sanford. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Renee   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

David's report had us laughing! His gf is Maria from Argentina! How many Maria's are there in Argentina?!

Kristen, MD   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Sorry to the Governors supporters but it doesn't take a strong man to admit publicly to an affair but a strong man stays committed to your wife and children. A strong man doesn't fly off to Argentina to see his mistress while the state you govern as no clue where you are?

Laci   June 24th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

I live in SC and Sanford's actions are unforgivable. He has lied to everyone and let down SC. He should be impeached.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   June 24th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I am jealous of Anderson in Paris! Say hi to "Mona" for me Anderson.

Catherine - Chicago   June 24th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Why is Anderson in Paris? For AirFrance?

Kathy, Chicago   June 24th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Hi AC, welcome back! I always feel sorry for the kids in these strange political affair stories.

Barrett   June 24th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Why didn't any reporters ask him how he paid for these trips to Argentina?

Maureen T, Canada   June 24th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Bonjour Anderson! Great to see you in Paris. Such a beautiful city!...What an interesting news day!

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   June 24th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

If his wife feels that way, she has no problem, but I asure you he will not give up that other woman because he has now put her in the lime light. It will be the other woman who will have to give him up after he has lost the true love of fhis life.

Jennifer - Michigan   June 24th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

I don't understand this "pen-pal" relationship.... Long distance I guess.

Karen Greenville, SC   June 24th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Our governor was very irresponsible in leaving the state without letting anyone know where he was. Regardless of his affair, this is why he should resign. Who will trust him? He was not an effective leader to begin with and this makes things worse.

Mortamus   June 24th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Yeah yeah gut wrenching sure
anyone can do that
he is finished in politics
if his wife can't trust him if he can leave his children his state and his wife for a girl in SA.?
Unreal another politician that cannot be trusted
sad isn't it Anderson?

susie   June 24th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

It is not the affair, but rather the downright lies to staff about where he was, failure to be in contact, a governor leaving his state with no one in charge. This was not addressed in the governor's news conference. These are serious issues. The problem of the affair is between the governor and his wife. I was a fan of his, but his poor judgement about leaving and not being in touch are not traits I want in a public official as important as a US state governor.

Teresa, OH   June 24th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Poor Gov. Sanford... crying like that... I noticed when he wiped his tears there was no wedding band on that ring finger.

Was he crying in Buenos Aires these past 4 days, I wonder? Or are those bags under his eyes from not getting much sleep?

Affairs should be no surprise to the cheater. Affairs are very detailed and thought out agendas. Takes some planning to get two people in a secluded enough place to take their clothes off.

Didi   June 24th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Hello Anderson, I'm looking forward to learning why you're in Paris. In the meantime, I believe the Governor's affair is news because he's criticized others for similar behavior and he left his duties as governor. When you're the head of anything you can't just pack your bags and not at least make sure people know how to reach you. I feel sorry for his children. They don't deserve this.

Lanelle Tyler   June 24th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I am praying for Govenor Sanford and his family. I believe he needs to step down from being our governor because instead of taking care of us and his family he has been using our taxpayer money to have an exotic affair. State employees have been furloughed and laid off and the legislature has been trying to help us with no help from him!

Jennifer in NoVA   June 24th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

The hypocrisy is astounding... last time I checked adultery wasn't a family value.

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

if he spent money that was that of the tax payers, he better find a way to pay it back. Let's hope he spent his own money.

Claudia   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I love that the woman's name is Maria. Do you know how many Marias there are in Argentina? Too many to count! Oh, and who cares what this guy is doing on his personal time!

Renee   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Okay, did he email from his work account?

Kristen, MD   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Jennifer why should this mistress get anonymity? The governor's wife and children don't get that privilege. She should have thought about that before she had an affair with a married public official.

Cindy   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

It shows his poor judgment that he couldn't realize that the "spark" was getting out of hand. If he had spent all of the time and concern he had for Maria on his wife, then maybe his marriage would have been more fulfilling.

Suzanne   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

A key point is being ignored. The affair ISN'T over! His wife left him two weeks ago after struggling 5 mo to work on their marriage. Then he traveled to Arg. over the past week to see her. So, this affair isn't over. No one can forgive him when he is CURRENTLY having an affair. Not his wife or the people of SC.

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

@ David, Indiana

I don't agree! I think public people should remain honest in the relationships of them.

If politically it would not be the best solution in a separation, instead of betrayal, for the family this would be!

Casey Jones, Palm Springs, CA   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

@Steve Who cast the first stone? When you actively attack people tyring ernestly to remove their constitutional rights, and then act in this manner, you're a target and deserve everything that is thrown at you.

Karie   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Its interesting to me that the Gov. HAD to leave his wife and kids over Father's Day weekend to visit his mistress. I'm not a reporter but there might be more to the story.

On another note, this is not a Republican or Democrat situation its just a very sad situation.

Nancy   June 24th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

re Mark Sandford. There are 6 boys involved. What is this teaching them about how men/fathers should behave?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   June 24th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

I don't so much care who the woman is...but the big question on my mind is who paid for all of this?

Fay - California   June 24th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

@Dulcie – Denver, I agree – the big problem with the GOP in this is the sheer hypocrisy and their hyper-criticism of Democratic politicians when they do the same thing.

Larry   June 24th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Days away from his job! Thats what needs to be focused on. How can you be in a position of responsibility and not let anyone know where you are and how you can be reached. What an abdication of ones responsibility.

Henya From CA,   June 24th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Hello Anderson,
Another Conservative Republican going down this is the 2nd one this month. I love it

Jane   June 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

My questions are:

1. Whether or not he broke policy by not disclosing to "ANYONE" of his "accurate" whereabouts or not putting someone else in charge while he was "OUT OF THE COUNTRY."

2. Military question: Did he leave his post unattended?

Sharon Larman   June 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Hi Anderson

I believe the governor should be given a second chance. I don't believe he should have to resign over this incident, many women and men cheat its not a crime to others other than his family. That was his private affair and we as the other people whom are not his family should not have to intervene with this.

Bev Spires   June 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

While I think the Sanford affair is embarassing for him I think that the situation in Iran is way more important and far more deserving of time Gov. Sanford should resign but people dying deserve more attention than a philandering politican. People are being buthchered and murdered in the streets, the least we can do is give it the attention it deserves.

Dawn   June 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I agree with Ben Stein. Govenor Sanford acted childishly and misled our state with a stupid story about his whereabouts. He has shown his true colars and cannot be trusted. He needs to resign!!!

Myrtle Beach, SC

Greg, Austin Tx   June 24th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

If those "50% of married people are unfaithful" statistics are true, that means that right now there are probably public officials doing the same thing that Sanford did. The only difference being, they haven't been caught.

Martina Ilstad Germany   June 24th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Hey Anderson
So,you are sleepless, too, because you are in Paris.I am watching your show from Germany. So its not so far away, com to Germany.

Kathleen keating   June 24th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I am a South Carolinian with a governor of a state which has one of the top unemployment rates and lowest education rankings in the country. Governor Sanford had the arrogance to refuse the funds we so desperately needed until he was forced to accept them. is it any wonder that the arrogance was carried into his personal life until he was forced to acknowledge it?

anthonia-california   June 24th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

This whole govenor situtation reminds me too much of...oh lets just say Jon & Kate+8?!

@Jasmine- i wonder if he told his wife about the "pen pal friendship" he had with Maria..?

Lori from IL   June 24th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Good evening Anderson (nice backdrop), Erica, Team 360 and Fellow Bloggers –

The story of Gov. Sanford is sad - but his confession of an affair today did not surprise me. There was something too strange about his disappearance. A husband doesn't go away and not tell his wife where he's going in a committed, lovinging relationship. My heart goes out to his children –

Rikki, Fargo, ND   June 24th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

My heart and prayers go out to the victims of that train crash. I couldn't believe it when I heard.

Mark Adams   June 24th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

AC – Hope you are enjoying Paris! Now the Gov. of SC should step down from being governor so that he can focus on his personal life and family and then let the public decide if they will let him back in if and when he makes his decisions. The two difficult situations just can't mix for an effective leader. Thank You and have fun!

Barbara Ann D'Olier   June 24th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

How can a father be gone on Father's Day?

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

I'm really furious how he skipped out on Father's day...at least his kids can still celebrate it unlike the less fortunate people in this country.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   June 24th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

I was hoping for La Pyramide du Louvre, but I love the setting with the Arc de Triomphe in the background. Beautiful!

Any chance we could get a glimpse of La Tour Eiffel?

starr formerly known as vincent   June 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

I think that the private affairs of public people (many times) should be left to them to settle My heart goes out to his children..

However, this Gov. potentially put his state in danger by leaving the country and not putting Anyone else on notice or in charge.

Further, if he has used tax money or has broken the law, he will likely have to step down.

Unfortunately, again, this is right wing religion hypocrisy in a big way.

Andrea   June 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

I can't say that I feel too sorry for Governor Sandford. I'm a resident of South Carolina and it's unfortunate that he felft the need to indulge in his own selfish desires rather than put that same level of intensity into leading our state in a better, more prosperous direction. Hey Governor, when you get a minute, do us the favor and step down. Thanks!

David, Indiana   June 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Wow that is a beautiful background shot of Paris.

@Isabel, I agree an affair compromises someone elected to office, but I don't think these things should disqualify someone from further public service or even running for President. I hope he can work things out with his wife. And I thought her statement that he had earned a chance to save their marriage was a piece of very good news.

Eliz   June 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Affairs will continue until women step up and end their marriages post affairs. Guys do it because they can and they know that in most cases their wives take them back and forgive them. Its game and the wives allow their men to play.

jim   June 24th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

SC gov should resign and if not be impeached for leaving mysteriously for days

Karen Greenville, SC   June 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

@ Sharon

Sanford let the people who elected him down in so many ways. I could care less about the affair–it is sad for his wife and kids, but he failed to do his job. He broke the trust of the people of this state.

Pam Whitmire   June 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

I believe Sanford should resigh. Not just because of the affair, but the way he has handled himself this week. Dishonesty is not the traits I want in the officials responsible for my state. Did he use state money for his trips??? Who knows......I don't care at this point. I just don't want him to be able to use state money for anything else. He has enough money to pay us back.

julia dilliard   June 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

It certainly appears that the governor is, at the very least, unstable. He put his little love affair before his family, before his responsibilities as the governor, and before his own previously stated interest in a presidential run. What public servant 'disappears' for nearly a week without notifying anybody of his whereabouts??? Granted, the liet gov is perfectly capable of stepping in and performing the duties of the office, but what kind of mayhem would have ensued had the situation called for him to do so? This sorry excuse for a husband, father, and public servant is selfish, irresponsible, and unfit for office.

Joe McCarthan   June 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Love is a powerful thing. Lands have been conquered, whole cities deticated in loves name.Gov. Sanford is just another of its victims.

Linda   June 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

I saw early the letter the Gov's wife wrote to the press, Now thats the person we should be commending for coming forth with such grace and dignity. Apparently she thought they were working to repair their marriage and then this fool goes BACK to Argentina to continue to carry on with this lady. Then he has the NERVE to bring GOD into his press conference, do these guys have no shame.
He starts off by saying too in one of his press releases I have hurt her(meaning the woman) my wife who he mentions after he mentions his hurting the woman first. This guy is a loser, whether he keeps his job is up to the people and state of South Carolina, but all my sympathy and heart goes out to his Wife and those 4 boys who are I am sure embrassed by no means.

Jennifer - Michigan   June 24th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

anthonia-california – I'm sure the wife knew of his "friendship" with the woman. Never a good thing for your husband to have a female "friend". Sounds like real trouble to me.

Teresa, OH   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Sometimes, I think the WIVES of politicians should be the ones running for the office. The men may be campaigning on Family Values, but it's the little lady behind the man who is holding down the fort and teaching the kids morals and values by example – not the daddy.

@Greg: patience, patience, they will be caught in due time.

Janelle   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Personal lives of public officials are public. They have a bigger responsibility as leaders to be better examples. I'm starting to wonder how prevalent all of this cheating on spouses really is with Governors, Senators, and Congressmen. Very few public officials these days seem to be able to handle political clout, as many seem arrogant. Some, like Governor Sanford, cheat on their wives. Maybe there should be a committee formed to have someone follow these guys around to find out how many really are cheating. I'm kidding, though it might be a good idea? I feel very sorry for his wife and four boys.

Susie   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

As a South Carolinian and a devotee of our political process, it is disturbing to me that the fundamental issue of Sanford's mental stability has not been serisously challanged. He abidicated his Constitutional responsibilities without regard for the well being of the fundamental duties he willingly has sought without seeming to understand the depth of his breach of public trust.

His press conference demonstrates an arogance and disregard for the dignity not only of his office but of his personal integrity as well. How juvenile to use such language as "sparking" and his crying in Argentina. He should resign immdediately

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

@anthonia- that is a very great question...I hope we can learn more about the development of the relationship, just to understand why he would skip out on Father's Day....

bea   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Folks, the State newspaper is in bed with SC politicans. Dates back to before slavery. The State newspaper likely told Sanford that they had these emails and agreed to keep it quiet. They only released them today because the story came out and it would look odd for them to keep holding them; the real story may be how the newspaper helped hide it.

zoie - SC   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

It is obvious that this Governor thinks only of himself. He fought against receiving the Stimilus Package–denying people jobs, their livelihood, and next he misleaded (no lied) to the people of this State while he was getting it on w/his mistress. It obvious he thinks only of himself. My heart goes out to his family because they have to live with him for the rest of their lives...I only have another year of him being my governor.

Martina Ilstad Germany   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

We have not forget the Iran people, but how we have to support them?

Adriana   June 24th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

It's unfortunate when this sort of thing happens to people. And, no one can justify his or her actions. "It just happens." We live in a world where there is so much temptation. It doesn't matter whether you are rich or poor, powerful or not, people "fall in love" and out of love. There are no easy answers. He is after all, human and flawed. I just simply wish politicians would stop portraying images of perfectionism or using their religion to prove their worthiness to hold public office. Just be honest for once. And, maybe we would have faith in our elected officials by being true to themselves and the people they represent.

dorothy   June 24th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

The new rage seems to be for politicians to go out, have an affair and come back in a press conference to apologize. He came close to crying and I would have hit the TV if he would have! By this time its too late to be sorry......just so glad not to see his wife standing up there with him playing "stand by your man"! Hats off to her. It's about time one of them stood down. However, I don't think we need to see nor hear the emails.

Murphy, Sioux Falls   June 24th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

The Governor's infidelity is an issue between him and his wife. What galls me is the hypocrisy: a conservative mind who opposes, on moral grounds, women's choice and same-sex marriage, appears to feel that these "rules" apply to others, but not him. Why is it that liberals seem to give their dudes a pass on infidelity whilst conservatives give one on hypocrisy? Which harms society more?

Kathy, Chicago   June 24th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Why on earth would he keep these letters if he is trying to keep this affair under wraps. Doesn't he think others can read them?

Cindy   June 24th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Love seeing the Arc de Triomphe lit up behind Anderson yet Anderson looks like he needs to get some rest.

Obviously Sanford only cared about himself and not his family. If he did he wouldn't have had this affair.

Love seeing Dr. Drew on!

Janna from CT   June 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

There is such thing as divorce. I am so happy his wide was not standing next to him saying everything is going to be ok. I am tired of political wives "standing by their man" when affairs happen and these men do stupid things. Its not a Repupublican thing or a Democratic thing, it's a matter of self respect.

Cynthia, NC   June 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Those love letters..........Too Much Information!

Some things I just don't want to know about, even if he is a government official.

Betty-IN.   June 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Whats with all these wives that put up with these jerks? At least his wife wasn't standing by his side while he was telling us yet another lie–I'm sorry–Hopefully the good people of S.C. will vote him out of officce when his term is up.

Bama   June 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

I agree with Rikki. If the affair is over and you want to save your marriage, why are you going to Argentina to spend the weekend with your mistress? The leaving the country without even your staff knowing definately shows irresponsiblity and for that reason he should step down. He put the safety of his state in danger.

Steve - southern Illinois   June 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

@Casey Jones – I can see your point.

Sandra Robertson, GA   June 24th, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Good evening Anderson and Erica. Life is really going to be hard for Gov. Sanford. Maybe he should go ahead and step down as governor. The love letter e-mails must be so embarrassing for himself and his family.

Ruby   June 24th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

This man needs to be impeached or resign from Governor for leaving his job and going out of the country and not telling anyone. And why do so many women in politics feel they must stay with these men who cheat on them? It's obvious he wants to be with the other woman or he wouldn't have went to Argentina and risk his job. His "I am sorry" is ridiculous! The only reason he is admitting to anything now is he got caught!

Casey Jones, Palm Springs, CA   June 24th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Based on what Dr. Drew just said, and the tone of just the one email, I would say the Governor is a womanizer and used to getting his way by "acting" sweet (and manipulative).

Cynthia, Jacksonville, Fl.   June 24th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Sanford's e-mails certainly lets everyone know the level of respect he has for his family and the people. His wife shouldn't give in and stay wih a man who obviously loves someone else.

Lori from IL   June 24th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Can't believe his marriage will last - you tell your wife you are having an affair and then don't end it. Can't believe she waited until 2 weeks ago to ask him to leave. The only thing I can think of is she didn't want to hurt her children. Never really heard him say today that the affair has ended -

Think he should resign, not because he is having an affair, but he left not only the state he govs, but the country and didn't let his staff know where he was going. This is just plain irresponsible.

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Dulcie - Denver   June 24th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Dr. Drew makes some really interesting points. Though I'm skeptical that any woman can truly forgive completely and find trust in her husband again. That's a pretty tall order. Not to mention, that once someone cheats, they're pretty likely to cheat again. Either sex is susceptible to that – just so you know I'm not being sexist. Both sexes cheat.

John Shepherd   June 24th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

What is wrong with these politicians? They are above the law, isolated and hypocritical. Here is an individual who was on the front to damaga our former President and low and behold, he is doing it himself.

When will they turn all of this negative energy into doing something for the American general populace?

Trisha of Atlanta   June 24th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Governor Sanford's adultry and hypocrisy is barely the issue. The man showed abysmal judgment and probably broke some laws by abdicating his responsibliities as governer. He left the state for seven days and noone knew how to contact him and he did not delegate his powers to anyone else. He should be removed from office with the same urgency a ticking time bomb would prompt.

Isabel, Brazil   June 24th, 2009 10:33 pm ET

The Government of Iran still maybe has not agreed to the fact that power belongs to the people. The people want to regain their power; they want to have a voice and time in decisions of the country.

Kelvin   June 24th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

So, is Dr. Drew stating that people should remain married just for their kids? I am not sure if that creates a nice environment for kids. Remember, kids are very aware of their surroundings and will be able to tell that "Mommy" and "Daddy" are not affectionate.

Olympia   June 24th, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Gov. Sanford was wrong for what he did and it was even worst that his staff was left to lie for him. Hopefully, he did not use our taxes dollars to fund these trips especially, after stating that he wanted to use the stimulus to pay down SC debt instead of investing it in our educational system.

One has only to ask, who is next and how many of them just have not been caught yet in their lies and hypocrisy. Life time politicians have no concept of anything other then “themselves”. Why is this even news??

Sharon   June 24th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

David, Indiana   June 24th, 2009 10:35 pm ET

@Isabel, People should be honest in their relationships, and I don't know if Gov. Sanford is being completely honest, but to come out and publicly admit what he's done is being forthcoming and takes bravery and show his willingness to patch things up with his wife. Seems like he strayed and came back. If we judge politicians on all their foibles we'd have to judge ourselves much more closely.

I want Gov Sanford to resign, but not necessarily about todays news although it confirms what I have thought for months – that his judgement is impaired – but he does not listen to us. He totally ignored our pleas to accept stimulus money and many teachers were layed off. Columbia, S.C.

Judy   June 24th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

As a native South Carolinian, I can say with certainty that Governor Mark Sanford has shamed our state, not because of his affair, but because of his arrogance and insensitivity to the citizens of our state. Did he use taxpayer money to fund his trips to visit his mistress in Argentina? And all the while, he was opposing accepting stimulus funds that would help the children and adult citizens of our state! Do we get reimbursed for the time he spent with his mistress on taxpayers expense? Do we get reimbursed for his hypocrisy – betrayal of trust of the people of South Carolina? Can we get a refund for the money and time he has wasted for our state? Can we get a refund for the lack of conscience he has shown for the disadvantaged people of our state? He lied to us. Appalachian Trail??? Trust??? How could we trust him??? Please Mark Sanford, don't waste any more of our time and money going around the state trying to regain our trust. We don't have time to waste. There are more important issues facing South Carolinians than you making yourself feel better at our expense. Step aside if you have any compassion in your selfish character.

We (my friends & faily) are feeling the pain of the Iranian people very much.

We support them morally, ethically and spiritually. Beyond that we don't know what else we can do.

We wish with all our hearts that the people of Iran will be victorious in their fight for freedom. However, it looks like the goverment is winning with their violence, brutality, clubs & guns.

Valeria Brazilian in NY   June 24th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

I agree... I think the Governor should be judged more for leaving his public office and be out-of-touch... His job is as a public person elected to serve the people so he should be available at any time... His personal life is private and treated as such.

Good evening Mr. Cooper....it takes courage for somebody who is supposed to live by example to admit & apologize in public abt his illicit affair. I don't condone with what Mr. Stanford has done though I admit by admitting it and being sorry is something else. In my country, having a mistress seems to be a natural thing for men. I feel sorry though for Mrs. Stanford and their boys.

Krasi   June 24th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

The images from Iran are horrifying. What's worse is that as usual, it is the common people, not those in power, who fight and lose their lives on the streets. Whichever side prevails, peace among everybody will be hard to achieve.

Jasmine   June 24th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

@Mike, but Iran doesn't have a leader that kidnaps movie stars and wears Paris Hilton sunglasses....

Marsha   June 24th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Who cares about what the governor does in his private life...his private life is his business....but I also believe that the governor should have taken into consideration that he has an important position and he should have never left without contacting anyone....people are depending on him to be there for them and for him to just leave without notice is unprofessional and inconsiderate. they should've known that he was up to no good once he did that.

Valeria Brazilian in NY   June 24th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

What a sad situation in Iran... I cannot believe what the Iranian diplomat said today... Their government is so not reliable... Imagine the scenes that we are not able to see... I wonder what will happen with the protesters after this is over...

james   June 24th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Anderson, your youth is showing. We are certainly into revealing every little detail of people's lives. First the Governor and soon will be Nixon tapes. To get in front of the comments of Nixon on abortion that are "shocking," that's why I say your youth is showing.

I am black and was dating someone who was white in the early 1970's. We never went out in public; we simply dined in for five years. Bi-racial couples were not accepted at that time as some would say they are today. So how do you know that Nixon was not speaking on behalf of society's attitude toward bi-racial couples and children as much as he was speaking for himself.

Another example is a woman I went to school with so we are talking about the late 60's and early 70's. She had a bi-racial child and for that reason, her parents made her give up the child. The child was adopted and some years later graduated from Harvard.

Do we need to pass judgment on something that happened prior to our adult life (or prior to our life) as though it happened in today's world and as though we were the ones there; there in many different ways.

LeeAnna Kirkwood   June 24th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

I forgive him. But why all the lies? I am happy that his wife wasn't standing next to him with his poor decision and more lies.

Victor   June 24th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

How can the protests continue when the protesters have nothing to defends themselves with against such brutality?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   June 24th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

I am really looking forward to Anderson's interview with Roxana tomorrow night. I am sure she has a lot to tell and I am interested in what she thinks about what is happening in Iran right now.

I look forward to reading her book.

Good Evening AC360

It's nice to see you back in my livingroom tonight Anderson, wondering where you've been. In Paris, very nice. I'd love to visit the Louvre Museum one day when I visit Paris myself.

Stay Safe and hope all have a great evening

So much for family values & the sanctity of marriage. Perhaps now the republican party will stop pandering to the religious right.

I prefer to err on the side of forgiveness for the governor. I do not condone what he has done and I realize public officials are held to a higher standard , but should they be? We are all human, we all make mistakes. Its just another example of the decline of morality not only in our country but around the world. We can blame ourselves as a society for our nations corrupt values. I pray the governor will will find forgiveness from his wife and children and put his life back together whether he remains in the public eye or not.

zoie - SC   June 24th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Yes, he should resign not because of the affair, but due to his irresponsible behavior as the governor of this state. MIA–any disastrous event could have occurred and as the governor he has the executive power. No, I do not think this is the man we want to lead our State. South Carolinians–your thoughts because he is "our governor?"

Kristen, MD   June 24th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Reza wow, what an amazing job you are doing. Glad to see you got out safe, good move.

Underground news papers...the foundation of every hard fought/hard won democracy.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   June 24th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Interesting choice of words: 'bones to break'. Unfortunately with the rest of the world not acting, there is no one to stop those bones from being broken.

Cindy   June 24th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

I hope that the Iranian people don't give up and keep fighting for their rights! I know it looks lopsided and like they have no shot to win but stranger things have happened!

I agree with Anderson...these police are nothing more than thugs with batons!

Cindy..Ga.

shahab   June 24th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

this is been happening in Iran for 30 years and you are just exposing it more and more everyday. i wish we could let the world know even more. even Mousavi is another one of them. the problem is the supreme leader and the whole regim.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   June 24th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

How are the news organizations determining which videos are current and which are not?

Fay - California   June 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Iran's atrocities against its citizens have been seen all over the world and because of this, they've already lost – it is heartbreaking to watch the protestors being attacked.

Rick   June 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

IF the stories of brutal beatings, shootings by militia, etc are true, they amount to murder and a contrived governmental purging of dissenting political views. Pres Obama, despite his attempts to balance his response, MUST speak out in the strongest terms. No government capable of this is ever going to be a trustworth party in negotiations anyway. Their legitimacy is already damaged permanently. Now, it's becoming more about protecting ours.

Krasi   June 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Well, when it comes to religion, they all promote peace; however, it's sad to see that somehow religion is always related to horrendous acts of violence. Supposed to be peaceful, but not quite I guess...

luvincia of nc   June 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

when you don't show up for work ? you get fired ! he'll have to work the rest out with his wife and his lover

Bruce   June 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

So, the Governor felt it important to gain back all the time he's been putting into the chairmanship of the Republican Governor's Conference and felt it was only fair to them for him to step aside. But - his time demands aren't that great and he doesn't owe the same courtesy to 4.5 million South Carolinians???

Ben Stein called MS "stupid;" lots of us have been doing that for a long while now. He needs to go away.

Sandra Robertson, GA   June 24th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I am worried about the Iranian civilians who have been taken away by so-called law enforcement. What is happening to them and where are they being dragged off to (?). Reza, I am thankful you returned home unharmed.

BettyAnn,Nacogdoches,TX   June 24th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Isn't technology amazing? We can see a war via twitter. Mind boggling!

Jan   June 24th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

These were peaceful protests until the government tried to stop them. Sad to see a leadership of a country, so insecure that they have to kill there own people!

This regime is permanently tainted by images transmitted from Iran.

I wonder when this will end?
And how long will the Iranian people that oppressed tyranny?

It is great to have a Brazilian here!

David, Indiana   June 24th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

@Isabel, yes a betrayal btwn two people is deeply painful, but two people can find forgiveness with eachother. When it involves children, it is even more hurtful. But in this case maybe Gov. Sanford has come to his senses.

Lori from IL   June 24th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Wow - good, informative segmant with Reza and the professor - sounds like we will be watching the story out of Iran for a long time.

Valeria Brazilian in NY   June 24th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I can understand the Iranians revolting against this regime, but wasn't the Presidential contender Mir-Hossein Moussavi also in the Islamic revolution 30 years ago? I don't think he could bring much change to their reality either...

starr formerly known as vincent   June 24th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Thank you Anderson for having Prof. Abas & Reza discuss Iran from their perspective.

As Reza mentioned Iran is secretive....the release of all of the tapes and info must infuriate them.
Interms of religion, Islam Is a religion of peace, not what the Islamic fundamentalists is so many countries have shown the world.

We genuinely hope that Professor Abas is correct and the people will prevail!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   June 24th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

So is the Iranian ambassador saying that all those videos are lies?

Mary Lou   June 24th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Sanford said he and his wife were on the outs for 5 months. She knew what he had done since Christmas last year. She had asked him to leave. So I do not think his disappearance was that much of a surprise to her, and from what I understand, if there had been an emergency, he could have been reached by cell phone.

Jennie   June 24th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Things in Iran are not pretty. We can expect for them to have their own civil war. Although the Irani government don't want to have their issues on display , it is inevitable. Neda was just the beginning. More chaos will come and we (US) must be very cautious.

Dave   June 24th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Anderson,

Nixon believing that babies born to interracial couples “have” to be aborted isn’t shocking in the slightest. HE is the one that introduced the “Southern Strategy” which pitted Blacks and Whites against each other, ALL for political purposes.

Charles   June 24th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

so what happens when you dont show up for work? i know i have missed a day of work before and i havent gotten fired and they had no idea where i had gone OR Not gone

Good evening all, May God help Iranian people, The thugs of Iranian regime have brought in Hammas and Hezbollah missionaries to supress Iranian revolt. These uprising, unlike what it seems, was orchestrated by RAFSANJANI and his allies with hope that SEPAH PASSDARRAN, the main army, would take side with him. This has not happen and SEPAH PASSDARRAN has sided with thugs of KHAMENEI, the so called supreme leader. Now we have unprotected Iranians on the street facing the mercyless, ruthless thugs of BASIGIS and PASSDARRAN. God have mercy upon them.
Here is my question, with GPS technology available , Why News organozations or even government intilegnet agancies are not using satelite technology to show the savagery of these animals to the world.
Good evening to all

Vig   June 24th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

What is the common denominator on these news stories today – all the strife, all the grief, all the heartache is brought on by men. Why even care about a narcisstic type like Sanford? His self-serving poop is not worth my time or attention. And look at Iran – "Supreme Leader"? more like Supreme Jerk-off. I hope the people of Iran riot day after day and bring down the oppressive, repressive, dictiorial bearded blow hards to their knees.

Em   June 24th, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Before the news broke this morning, my parents and I had agreed that wherever the Gov was, he was most likely with a lover...sad that we have become so cynical and that it was true. Betraying his family is bad enough but he should step down for sheer dereliction of duty.

So horrible in Iran. My prayers are with the people suffering for their freedom. Glad Reza left, it would be a shame to have one more jailed journalist. Looking forward to your interview tomorrow with Roxana and glad Reza isn't finding himself in her position.

i've been following the protests in Iran and it just dawned on me; what if the incumbent did in fact win? And would anything really be different policy wise if Moussavi became President? I'm really not sure....whatever the real issues are, it's heartbreaking to see such violence...

Linda   June 24th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

@ David in Indiana

You say it looks like the Gov has come to his senses, The Man just left his State, telling no one to continue to have his affair with this woman in Argentina, doesn't appear like he was trying or even thinking of working on his marriage.

Gayle   June 24th, 2009 10:57 pm ET

We in SC are in total shock. The continual lying, the hypocrisy, the absence and disreguard for our state. If it comes out that the taxpayers PAID for this tryst through his trips, he should resign. And from reading the emails to his lover, I can not believe that his wife, Jenny, will be able to move past all this and believe that he ever loves her again. She is a beautiful woman and deserves better. I speak from a standpoint of having been there and worked to recover a marriage. It would be best that he does resign and gets out of the public eye if he genuinely wants to save his family. Oh what a tangled web we weave...................

Goodnight – have a nice evening or morning, whatever it is.

Donna, North Carolina   June 24th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

Why did Gov. Sanford use the term "sparking" to describe what was happening between himself and his mistress? Sparking is such a sweet, old-fashioned term. What he did was not sweet; he lied, cheated, and abandoned his post as govenor, possibly on the taxpayers' dollars. Of course, liar, cheat, and abandonment are old-fashioned words that have been around forever!

Rebekah   June 24th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

@Krasi – i was just thinking the same thing.

just thinking about police – who are supposed to protect people – beat people because they're representing what they believe in. everyday i turn on CNN i can't believe this still happening in Iran.

David, Indiana   June 24th, 2009 11:00 pm ET

@Isabel, maybe it depends on how the emails became public.

The crackdown in Iran is a matter of concern because suddenly there is hardly any outside view of what is going on their and so we don't know the extent and violence of the crackdown that already seems very violent.

What's brickbreaker?

Whew Thank God that kid was allright! God, I am truly glad about that.

Good night Isabel, good night everyone
