The effectiveness with which Iran's security forces have dealt with the worst outbreak of political violence since the 1979 Islamic revolution illustrates the scale of the challenge faced by the Green Revolution's supporters in changing the way the country is governed.
From the moment Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's supreme leader, issued a stark warning declaring the protests to be illegal, the regime has moved quickly and forcefully to suppress the pro-reform movement.
And, to judge by the diminishing numbers of protesters who are prepared to risk their lives demonstrating against the result of the recent presidential election, the tactics appear to be working.
Because of the tight media censorship imposed by the government, it is impossible to get an accurate picture of the number of Iranians who have died or suffered serious injury as a result of the protests. Iranian officials put the fatalities at between 10 and 15, while opposition groups claim the figure is nearer 150.

June 24th, 2009 11:18 am ET It is hard for an Iranian to open fire on another Iranian, that's why the government has hired soldiers from palastine and lebonan to beat and kill these innocent people. The killings are done by Arabs and not Iranians and they do it gladly. |

June 24th, 2009 12:18 pm ET In Nazi Germany, the SS was also a "state within a state", like these Revolutionary Guards in Iran, and also controlled many economic activities. In addition to controlling all the police forces, it was also a large military force. For the historian, it's not a question of whether Iran is fascist police state, but of which type of fascism it resembles most. It has features similar to Nazi Germany and Franco's Spain, among others. |

June 24th, 2009 5:09 pm ET The only way the current Iranians can fight the dictator is with guns. Because that's how the revolutionaries were able to win in 79. Guns. Because the police and military will kill everyone . Change will only come with guns and blood. They will have to give their lives for change. Otherwise nothing will change. A ruthless dictator runs the country who wouldn't think twice to having all of the protestors killed. Meanwhile Obama reads yet another speech like its his grocery shopping list. |
