AC360° Correspondent

Our waiting paid off. About 3:30pm the wife of South Carolina's "missing" governor rode up the long driveway of the family's beach house and promptly asked me to leave.

Jenny Sanford seemed under stress and upset as she stepped out of the family's SUV with her young boys. She quickly ordered her children not to say anything to me.

I only had time to ask one question before she went inside: "Have you heard from your husband?"

She surprised me with an answer: "I am being a mom today. I have not heard from my husband. I am taking care of my children."

He was just made because his legislature MADE him accept the stimulus money. When I get mad, I take a walk...I just make sure people know where I am going and I answer my cell. Looks like Sanford forgot that rule.

Wow. All I can say is that I totally feel for her and her children. They are obviously under a lot of stress to either A – keep a secret that is undoubtedly disturbing or B – endlessly wonder where their father/husband is, even if, on some level, they know he's safe. C – just plain wonder.

The media should, of course, continue to monitor this crucial situation, but with respect for the governor's bewildered family.

Man.. leave her alone.. she is there taking her children in.. do they need to hear that...? really.. ? their father ran off somewhere... they don't need that. sometimes you guys go too far. family is sacred. really.

I am a wife of 36 years, and a mother of adult children. Our family members always let each other know where we are at.

Especially my husband and I, if one of us "disappeared" for a few days, something would "smell".

Sandford is lying. He and Ensign may have something in common. Wink... wink.

The wife probably knows where her husband is and is keeping it quiet so the press won't be bothering him. I'm sure all the press attention is stressing her and her children out – give it a rest – its not a big deal unless he doesn't show up when he said he would. Until then if you just have to know where he is and its that big of a deal, then quit badgering the family and go hike the trail and see if you find him.

Margaret istre   June 23rd, 2009 6:24 pm ET

Jenny knows where he is. Hiking, hiding out more likely. Take care of business like a gentlemen Governor Stanford!

Just for a second let's try to forget that a govenor did something so impetuously. What kind of a father chooses not to be with his young children on Father's Day?

Linda B., Ga.   June 23rd, 2009 7:18 pm ET

This guys nuts.....they should impeach him....first off he was refusing much needed "stimulus" monies, with his states unemployment, at one of the highest in this country...schools that are falling down around their children....now he takes a WALK....he should take a PERMANENT HIKE......and take Lindsey Graham with him!

I agree with Heather.....what father would want to be away from his children, on Father's Day....

Lampe   June 23rd, 2009 7:29 pm ET

If Obama, was under alot of stress, and wanted to get away from everything for a few days, would you be bothering michelle like this? and, whose to say this man did not speak to his children on the phone? Just because you don't see, or hear something doesn't mean it did not happen. Get on with the more important news, like Iran, the economy, health care, what the Dems are doing to this country, you know stuff to make you really earn a "PAYCHECK."

DawnL,CA   June 23rd, 2009 7:40 pm ET

He just went out to pout or meet up with Ensign somewhere. Keep the wife & kids out of this. He was AWOL on Father's Day. He's a jerk.

Dee Dee   June 23rd, 2009 8:00 pm ET

Something's rotten in Denmark or SC

Kristen, MD   June 23rd, 2009 8:17 pm ET

Why are you harassing his wife and children? Those kids don't deserve to be stalked by media. Sitting outside their house is creepy.
