The fallout continues over President Obama’s and former VP Dick Cheney’s speeches in which they offered competing views on how to keep America safe. The President asserts he is still cleaning up a ‘mess’ left behind by his predecessor, and defended his plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, amidst other terror fighting measures he has enacted since taking office.
Even after he made his case though, the Senate approved a $91 billion dollar bill to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but only after lawmakers stripped it of cash needed to close Gitmo.
Former VP Cheney defended the policies of the past administration, saying that Gitmo and the Bush administration’s interrogation tactics kept Americans safe. He asserted that president Obama has weakened the country’s ability to fight al Qaeda and extremists. He also said President Obama’s decision to close Gitmo involved “little deliberation and no plan.”
Opinions differ all around on whether the US should house detainees in supermax prisons in the U.S. What do you think? Tonight our panelists from both sides of the aisle will put this week into context for you.
President Obama and John McCain criss cross today when the President delivers a commencement address at the US Naval Academy in Florida. (insert famous Cats song: "Memories"…). John McCain will be in the audience as a parent to one of the graduates. Wonder if they’ll do lunch together afterwards? Probably not.
Other stories: We’ll follow the latest developments on the 4 suspected terrorists arrested in NYC this week. Sean Callebs has a story on how FEMA is threatening to pull all occupied trailers in Louisiana, yet the families in those trailers are homeless and don’t have the funds to rebuild their homes. Ed Lavandera caught up with the first black mayor in Philadelphia, Mississippi who was just elected this week. He was pretty emotional over his win, particularly significant in a town with a history of racial tension.
What other story do you want to see tonight? Let us know. See you at 10pet!

May 22nd, 2009 9:37 am ET I am against the torturing techniques but lets get a grip here. No one can really be 100% sure that they didn't work or if they did. There are documents that Obama won't release showing that they did. And if there are one set of docs that we know of who's to say that there are not more? No one can because Obama's too scared to release them for fear of it proving him wrong! In hindsight we can all pass judgment now but in that moment in time right after 9/11 everyone was scared and had no clue if they were going to attack us again or not. They did what they thought they had to do to keep this country safe. It may have been the wrong thing to some but at least they did something and we do have proof even if Obama won't release it that it did get some real results! People just want to over look that because they are too lovey dovey with Obama. If we were attacked today and thousands were killed could you honestly say you would care if they did it again to keep us safe..especially if it was some of your family that was killed? But we won't get attacked..you know why..because Bush's policies and techniques helped us get to this point where we are now which is a lot safer! Love him or hate him he did keep us safe you can not deny that. If you do then you are a liar. And just so ya know...we aren't the only ones by far that have done this. And even if we never had done this the ones who hate us still would and do. If they captured one of our men today they'd torture him mercilessly and not because we did it no, it'd be because they hate us and want to make a statement of that! You are crazy if you think they wouldn't! Cindy..Ga. |

May 22nd, 2009 9:52 am ET The "Rupert Murdock (Australian) Family",shunned by the English Aristocracy as a youth, yes, the "British Tabloid" garbage editorial king, has crossed the pond ,and brought upon us all the British/Aussie baggage of their backwards countries, and pre-historic monarchy to America ,the country that tried to destroy us twice as a (English) youth, and whom we saved twice (English WWI & WWII) from annililation! He simulates the Hearst News media too a tee, with his overpowering control of media at FOX news ,but is only a puppet for the seeing eye that loves to have conflict, with the time given Cheney to pretend his love for our country ,clothed in euros, and greenbacks, his only master to truth! Cheney, and Fox News sickens me,...along with the pompous British! |

May 22nd, 2009 10:10 am ET I would like to know why Cheney is even on the news everyday?, where is President Bush, if anyone should be defending his admin., it should be him..Is Cheney gearing for the next election?..I think President Obama is doing a fine job, He is intelligent, thinks things out, has ability to see all sides and understand them...Where is Colin Powel, the GOP needs men like him. |

May 22nd, 2009 10:44 am ET Obama is right. I'm sick to death of the fear mongering, hatred, vitriol, and divisiveness of the remains of the Republican party. Enough is enough already. |

May 22nd, 2009 11:09 am ET First of all, how do we know that the deteinees are criminals in the first place. How do you know that they are terrorists, how did they come to be in Gitmo, that the question we should be asking, because there is no evidence that they are. So I applaud Obama for giving them an opportunity for a fair trial under US law. |

May 22nd, 2009 11:18 am ET Mr. Cheney, please get off the airways – you have nothing to say that I want to hear!!! We've had enough of you and Bush for 8 yrs (a lifetime for me) – you had your chance and you blew it. This country will never be the same because of you, your lies and your misuse of power. Mr. Obama may not be perfect, but let's give him a chance, I think he is doing a fine job – better than you ever did even on a good day. |

May 22nd, 2009 11:23 am ET I wonder where you AC came up with the "lie" that pres.oboma is a christian ? You must not be a true journalist (who get there facts right) but a paid puppet reading a script. This truth I know will not make it on air. Birds of a feather, all liars flock together and keep the truth suppressed. |

May 22nd, 2009 11:40 am ET At a certain point, the leaders have to say, no more money. That is it. We are in a bad shape, we need to get our country back in order. But, do we have someone who will just say it. |

May 22nd, 2009 11:41 am ET We get it...We get it....in the name of Allah and Jihad ...we get it. The creepy radical left would let Americans die ....and then arrest the terrorists...and then use the wildlife capture and release program that NATO uses. In the dueling speeches...Cheney won hands down. Obama's speech was too long....I think 25 references to the last administration....tight lipped fussing at those Americans who don't agree with him about Gitmo ...then there was the lovely family references. Cheney...short and to the point....the last administration had no problem making the tough decisions and apologies are due no one...and they would do it again. It was good....it was very good. |

May 22nd, 2009 11:51 am ET It is amazing to hear these politicians reasoning why they do not want these accused terrorist in their states. It is the same amazement i felt when homeland security came out with a color warning system and Duct Tape. It truly is amazing that an administration gave us a Color Warning System and Duct Tape still can be taken serious. |

May 22nd, 2009 12:12 pm ET How does moving more than 100 prisoners from a prison in Cuba where they aren't charged with crimes and will be held indefinitely ... to a prison (or prisons) in the contiguous U.S. where they won't be charged with crimes and will be held indefinitely make us safer ... or appease America's critics? Once the prisoners are on U.S. soil ... most will not be able to have a trial because the evidence can't be brought into public view ... but even President Obama won't release them because they are too dangerous and nobody else will accept them. So for all the hot air coming out of Washington ... nothing will change except for where the prisoners are being kept ... and if they are mixed with our current prison population will find themselves with many opportunities to convert Americans into jihadists. |

May 22nd, 2009 12:18 pm ET I agree with most of the people here, why are we still hearing from the old presidents staff, that is like your old boss showing up speaking about your new job! As far as safety, it is an illusion we all like to have, truth is we will never be truly safe, but we can be prepared if intruders enter and that is the key. I just watched TAKEN and this man did more than "waterboard" people to get his daughter back, on matter such as these i think that the public should keep their distance, yes we have a right to know, but just like other issues, this one might belong on infowars.com instead of the mainstream. We dont need to know that you tortured someone that was in the wrong in the first place, we are talking BAD people here, one's who are not like the CSI teams and will walk away if the bad guy does not give it up. This is not a kidnapping, this is a case of WORLD WIDE safety, and there is no evidence that we are arresting or detaining the wrong people, at least not in this instance |

May 22nd, 2009 12:48 pm ET I think that the place should be closed and the terrorists/prisoners be locked up in a proper maximum security...solitary confinement, for the rest of their natural lives. Then the Bay can be spiffed up and made into a proper tourist resort...if you like hot sunny weather. |

May 22nd, 2009 2:38 pm ET Dick Cheney needs to go away somewhere he can no longer find a sound bite. Torture is a disgrace no matter how you want to frame it. Cheney needs to get a life away from politics along with his daughter Liz who is hot-footing it from show-to-show trying to save "dear old dad's legacy." Cheney was wrong during the Bush administration and is wrong now. and the sad thing is he seems to believe his own misinformation and exaggeration. |

May 22nd, 2009 2:41 pm ET Unless the Lord watches over the Nation the military for all its might protects it in vain. Woe unto America who has forgotten the Lord, who refuses to repent of its sins & wickedness. This Nation shall see the judgements of Allmighty God fall upon it. |

May 22nd, 2009 3:31 pm ET Why is the media giving Dick Cheney so much air time? He is the former vice-president, not the current VP. He has had his time. He has done what he wanted to do for eight years, so enough already. Al Gore didn't repeatedly go after Bush when he got into office when he didn't agree with his policies. The sad part is that Cheney's daughter, who has been denied her own rights, is advocating on behalf of her dad – again! Don't continue to give Cheney any more opportunity to grandstand. The Bush administration literally got away with crimes against humanity over and over again and justified doing so, yet Cheney won't step down like a gracious looser? What is wrong with this picture? |

May 22nd, 2009 7:51 pm ET Former Vice President Dick Cheney has a corner office on the 3rd floor of Reality. He looks out of windows tinted with fear, unaware that there are many floors above him, each with windows clearer than his. Many of us have lived on the 3rd floor, and have decided to move up to a reality where people base their perceptions on progress rather than paranoia. Anyone with a corner office has been on their floor a long time, and their arguments are very persuasive. Many of us moving to higher floors are still in transition, struggling to see the world from a different perspective. Our arguments are often not as well settled or dogmatic, as we are still finding our way. I am thankful that our country was smart enough to elect a president – Barack Obama – who has an office on a higher floor, with windows that are clearer. He recognizes the importance of standing by the principles that our Founding Fathers instilled in us and has a perspective of how important it is to cooperate with other countries, build alliances, and make decisions based on fortitude, not fear. Often we can’t help what floor our office is on; the least we can do is recognize that there are floors higher than ours, and that those who live on higher floors often have perceptions that are clearer and farther reaching than our own. May 23rd, 2009 5:30 am ET It's funny that Dick Cheney is talking about keeping America safe as if he's an expert when he was a major member of the administration which failed to keep our country safe during the 9/11 attacks, then used fake WMD intelligence reports to start the war in Iraq, and allowed the torture of prisoners who were terror suspects as if not caring that going against the rules of humanity when dealing with our enemies or suspected enemies wasn't an encouragement for our enemies to deal with our soldiers the same way. Cheney needs to go away and hide for the good of America. |

May 25th, 2009 5:11 pm ET GET THE FACTS BEHIND THE NEWS A POW SOLUTION FOR GITMO DETAINEES If prison location is a problem two suggestions would be to reopen Alcatraz or put them on an isolated island in the pacific but give them the Geneva protections without torture. This location problem has been blown way out of proportion. I am sure it was never the gov’t’s intention to just turn them loose. We should also note that a high percentage of these people maybe innocent, they have NEVER had an impartial judicial hearing. Some have been held for six and seven years at Guantanamo Bay. Diogenes believes it was a tragic mistake to take prisoners captured on the battlefield and give them an “enemy combataned” status so they could be tortured. It is hard to believe that a President of the US would locate the prisoners in a location he thought would be free from the US Judicial System so that he could do things that he knew were illegal. It is important to close Guantanamo for many good reasons as many experts and the majority of the public knows. Details another blog. It is even more important to NOT HAVE A PREVENTIVE DETENTION PROGRAM. PREVENTIVE DETENTION IS THE PATH TO DICTATORSHIP. ONCE YOU START BY PASSING THE BILL OF RIGHTS AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM THERE IS NO TELLING WHERE YOU WILL END. . . probably dictatorship. No matter how well intentioned or how many groups have to okay preventive detention over a period of time preventive detention would be used to silence political enemies rather than to prevent terrorism. If Dick Cheney.or people of similar opinion, are deciding who should be held in preventive detention it would be disastrous for us and democracy. |
