Tonight on AC360°, two white youths acquitted in the beating death of a Mexican immigrant. Now, calls for federal charges. What’s this case say about our current state of race relations? Was this a hate crime? Soledad O'Brien has the report. Anderson will discuss the topic with CNN Senior Legal Analyst Jeffrey Toobin and John Amaya from the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund. You can join the conversation here.

Hope you have a great weekend!!!!!! Happy Monday!

I ask Jeff and John Amaya,
is that crime hate against immigrant of death, if no witness find to help that man? can you tell us, why hate crime against the race?

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Good evening! Very interested in the discussion tonight.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   May 4th, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Good evening everyone! Hollywood!

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Evening, Anderson!

Hello, 360 team, friends and bloggers… everyone!

Data show that global recession is moderating.
Is this is a fact, or just signal that the market is still volatile?

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Anderson looks soooo good today.

Anthonia-california   May 4th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Nattada, Houston TX   May 4th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Economic seems to be good tonight. Hope it keeps up like this from now.

gayle mccauley Malden,Mass.   May 4th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

Greetings to All! I hope everyone had a great weekend! : )

John - Scottsdale, AZ   May 4th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

The market has shown these fluctuations in the past. Who says we won't recover?

Tom B   May 4th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Hello everyone looking forward to a great show!

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   May 4th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Helloooo Anderson, Erica, Edurrado(Ed Henry) and my friends Twitter/Facebook Bloggers!!!!!

Hope you have a great weekend!!!!!! Happy Monday!

Esma   May 4th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Anderson, don't ask why people kill children, it will drive you insane. My heart goes out to Alex's friends and family and I hope the animals that did this pay dearly.

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Anderson, a beautiful vision of Hollywood at the background

azeez, Hillside, NJ   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Hello Anderson + everyone! Happy Monday!!!

starr formerly known as vincent   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, ET AL! (& Erica, David G. etc.)

Good evening fellow bloggers, good Monday!

I've heard from several economists that we could have a "jobless" recovery, truly hope that's not the case.

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I don't know what is going on in Chicago. This is happening every year in the school system.

Rebekah   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

evening Anderson, Erica =]

terrible story about the 15 year old Alex who got brutally murdered. i seriously started crying. things like this confuse me so much. why so much violence?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Such a sad story...the violence really never does end does it?

Seeing a story like this makes me very thankful to be a North Dakotan...

Maren in Oregon   May 4th, 2009 10:05 pm ET

You cannot tell me that no one in the area heard or saw anytihng! That his paretns removed him from school, and that authorities did nothing, or his school did nothing, is atrocious!

Cessy, Chicago   May 4th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

good evening, everyone...sad Monday here in Chicago...

Glen Up North   May 4th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Great news about the economy! However, terrible news about that student... Gangfare was exactly what I was thinking about before it was even mentioned.

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Anderson and Ali,

Data show that global recession is moderating.

Best news in Europe, China and India and positive signs for sales of homes in the U.S. this Monday raised hopes that the recession may have reached the bottom of the well.

Is this is a fact, or just signal that the market is still volatile?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Looks like the 'do nothing' crowd may have been right. Things are looking up and only 10% or less of the stimulus money has be spent. Do we really need the stimulus if the economy is recovering on its own?

Dulcie - Denver   May 4th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Wow, how horrifying for that boy and his family. Tragic and evil.

Fay - California   May 4th, 2009 10:06 pm ET

It doesn't look like Chicago can get a handle on the violence in their school system – it's horrible to see these students being cut down so senselessly.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA (follow @edhenrycnn)   May 4th, 2009 10:07 pm ET

the spokes person for the school district in Chicago seems like she wants to forget about the deaths...trying to avoid it? not cool

Nattada, Houston TX   May 4th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

My thought and preyer go to Alex, other students and their families. It is so sad this happened because of how he is different from who ever commit these crime.

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

So why is Anderson in Hollywood? I must've missed it.

starr formerly known as vincent   May 4th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Anderson, thank you for reporting (again) on the children's murders. Your show was one of the few last year that paid ANY attention to these murders!

We need a bright light shown in that city, in the hopes that it will unearth the heart of the problem. We are lossing too many kids there!

Dodie from Irvine, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

So tragic regarding the child in Chicago. I hope they find and bring to trial as an adult. So very sad

Dan Nelson   May 4th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

These young men have killed a young Mexican man, what will be their punishment? Do you wonder why there is so much sin in the U.S?

Judi Wolf   May 4th, 2009 10:08 pm ET

If there were 36 cases of flu in the Chicago Schools, they would be closed. Guess what? There is a bad case of guns out there and it is in epidemic proportion. Why doesn't anyone see this as a national emergency?

Alex G., Philadelphia, PA   May 4th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

It's sickening that so many have to die before the public begins paying attention to the tragic circumstances these kids are stuck it.

arrie   May 4th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

i love to see the first family photos, but i am finding it a bit odd that you are showing them every night. can you knock it off, its inappropriate.

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

What's worse is that the violence problem is not specific to Chicago schools only. Definitely disturbing though.

gayle mccauley Malden,Mass.   May 4th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Sounds like good news for the economy...I hope so. I've been out of work for almost a year.

azeez, Hillside, NJ   May 4th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Noooooooooo Anderson – Please!! No more swine virus news.

David, Indiana   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Hey Anderson, you're in LA, Hollywood specifically, hi Erica, hi everyone.

Yes, it's so good to hear that losses since the beginning of year have been made up in the markets.

Seems like we can say conclusively there are indeed glimmers of hope in the markets, green shoots in the economy.

Two main indicators today yes, but a lot of steps have been taken to boost the economy, and the surge today was spurred by some stunningly positive support for the economy, coming from all sectors, and Warren Buffet's optimistic assessment helped too.

Maren in Oregon @edhenrycnn   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson, Erica and the whole 360 Team!

Maureen T, Canada   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Good evening Anderson. Standing on the roof of the bulding in Hollywood. Looking good.

Maria   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Goodevening all

Rebekah   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

@Miss J – it's because Anderson is doing a show with Jay Leno tonite

Anthonia-california   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

My prayers goes out to Alex's family. These killings in chicago is just unbelieveable. So many young lives with futures ahead of them are dying, this is just sad..

arrie   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

we need to get rid of guns, the boy was shot first. its a gun crime AGAIN.

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

@ Miss J

Good question! Why is Anderson in Hollywood?

I'm enjoying the scenery outside! :)

Laura - Va   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Yes the swine flu was hype and the overcoverage of it contributed to that. Check out cnn.com article, Swine flu no worse than regular flu, Napolitano says – "The swine flu virus that has sparked fear and precautions worldwide appears to be no more dangerous than the regular flu virus that makes its rounds each year, U.S. officials said Monday."

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

The authorities say there is no reason for panic, but the news are alarming.
Already there are 1,003 confirmed cases of swine influenza virus, renamed A-H1N1 in 20 countries. In all, 25 deaths are registered in Mexico and one in the U.S.
Only a madman not to worry.

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

People are disturbs. In coming weeks I will travel and my husband told me it would be good if I don’t sneeze in Panama or the U.S., for I have no problems.

Wait! Sneezing or my allergy, is it something that I can control?

Maureen T, Canada   May 4th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Anderson will be a guest on the Tonight Show tonight...

Maureen, Georgia   May 4th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

I thnk the actions taken were appropriate for the swine flu & although some people thinks it's hype. I'd rather them do more than too little. This is a new virus I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA (follow @edhenrycnn)   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I find the hype of the swine flu, or now known as "Hamthrax" really ridiculous. This thing hasn't killed more people than the regular flu does in one day...

Cessy, Chicago   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

The story of the 15yr old is sad indeed. However, it not unsual for a teenager to be targeted/recruited by gang members. The fact that his parents knew something was up (by removing him from school due to receiving threats) clearly tells us that there is more to this story. He may not be an active member of a gang, but he may have an affiliation to one. He was clearly being watched.

Dodie from Irvine, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

The concern is when it comes back again in September, it could be more dangerous due to mutations

Barbara in Boston   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

No, the H1N1 precautions are NOT hype. Anytime the WHO and CDC show concerted action against an influenza virus indicates a real threat.

Remember the early warning signs - more than 50 deaths of young adults from sudden onset influenza. That is the real red flag.

Just because we haven't had many deahts outside of Mexico doesn't mean the fear wasn't well-founded.

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I'm glad the swine flu hype turned out to be just that – a hype.

Clem   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

The student murders in Chicago and everywhere is sickening , it literally makes my stomach turn. We live in a society that glories violence: torture, war, and violence against women and children. In my opinion the blood of these children are on all hands who participate, perpetuate or who are silent about violence in any shape or form.

Edna   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

It is so despicable (for lack of a better word) that there are all these children dying in Chicago and no one's doing anything about it. We are in 2009 and still dealing with problems that were rampant in the 70's where poor children were being left behind. This needs to stop. We need to get to the bottom of this because education is the only thing that will save our children and they can't get that if they can't go to school.

John - Scottsdale, AZ   May 4th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

The swine flu hype is giving me a headache!

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Napolitano has come to the conclusion that everyone else knew a week ago. It's a good thing too, because our response was slow. Hong Kong had the right idea, quarantine anyone who gets it or was exposed.

Lori from IL   May 4th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson, Erica, Ali, Team 360 and Fellow Bloggers-

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Situation with murder of Chicago school children is so sad. Numbers seem to be going up every year.

Laura - Va   May 4th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Just think of all the schools closed because of it. Schools don't close because of the regular flu outbreaks. Definitely hype to me. I think it was an overreaction because of the word "swine". They didn't know this before today? C'mon.

Diane   May 4th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Ask Mayor Daley about the Chicago Public School children murders. He is too busy making sure parking ticket revenue is being generated. The City is second to none at finding parking offenders!

Robin in Tampa, FL   May 4th, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Oh good to hear Napalitano come out and say the swine flu isn't that bad ... looks like fear was over hyped.

Tommy   May 4th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Will the swine flu continue to spread, and be dangerous, if it is not completely wiped out?

Erica Hill
CNN
  May 4th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

hi, everyone – hope you all had a good wkd

starr formerly known as vincent   May 4th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Idon't know about the rest of you, but here in NM, many of the stores do not have any more disinfective wipes, bleach, etc.

I support the medical info, but some panic appears to have happened here. And we have only 1 reported case!

Rikki, Fargo, ND   May 4th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Good to see Sanjay out of isolation and safe and healthy! He really had some excellent insight and reporting on the Swine Flu! Thanks Sanjay!

Marianne in Utah   May 4th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I suspect mask-wearing will become a commonly accepted habit in the US as well as countries like Mexico, Japan, and China. Sign of the new times...

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Keep your surrounding clean.

Jonathan Wilson   May 4th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

In New Hampshire only one confirmed case of Swine Flu. Yet there were four schools closed today. Why is it taking so long for the test results to come back?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   May 4th, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Sanjay was right on target in his reporting on this swine flu epidemic. He was cautious, but not overly concerned. He did exactly what the surgeon general would have done, if we had one.

Jana, Indiana   May 4th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Really good mix of stories tonight.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA Follow @edhenrycnn   May 4th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Thank you Dr.Gupta for infomation from swine flu! it is very so scary I learn that is very bad news, who died of swine flu!

Nattada, Houston TX   May 4th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

It is still mystery, then, why many people died in Mexico and not anywhere else. It is kind of good, though, that it is not as serious as we prepared for it to be.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Anderson, why is he a 'Mexican immigrant'? He was here illegally. Please don't start with the PC 'undocumented immigrant' stuff. He committed a crime to be here.

Maureen T, Canada   May 4th, 2009 10:16 pm ET

What a great view from that building! I didn't realize Andy was so high up there! :)

Dodie from Irvine, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

@Erica.

Where is Anderson filming? I almost looks like Yamashiro's restaurant with a beautiful breathtaking view of Los Angeles all the way to the ocean.

Nattada, Houston TX   May 4th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Good evening ANderson, Erica, AC360 Team, and all bloggers.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Gupta is mask-less. Always good news.

Hill, the weekend was okay – busy. Finals time and all! I hope yours was relaxing, and I hope everyone is ready for the week.

On the negative side, it’s very heartbreaking to hear about another student being killed in Chicago. Are politicians or administrators at the schools trying to quell this in any way?

Chip in Florida   May 4th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Anderson, it is too graphic to give all of the details of the killing of the 15yr old Alex in Chicago. Maybe Obama will assist his old town in correcting this gang-related problem, and the murderer and his accomplices should get nothing short of the death penalty. I say let's bring the fire-squad back to all states of the union! Hamarrabi's Code of Conduct.

Dulcie - Denver   May 4th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I actually found the progress of the flu pretty fascinating. Not that there wasn't some hype, but it was cool to see how it tracked.

Maren in Oregon @edhenrycnn   May 4th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Good night

Anthonia-california   May 4th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

@clem-I totally agree, its sickening to see these young lives being taken away instantly . this is almost something you would see on a movie...its hard to believe that its actually happening.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA Follow @edhenrycnn   May 4th, 2009 10:18 pm ET

Hi Erica,
You too! Nice see you on live blog tonight!

Chicago has the largest and one most brutal gangs in the country with members in the ten thousands.

Robin in Tampa, FL   May 4th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

We can all come out of our bunkers now ... the swine flu wont be responsible for the zombie apocalypse as we have all been fearing.

robin   May 4th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

cnn sensationalized the swine flu hysteria. not the government.

Dodie from Irvine, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

With the drop in economy, this can spark issues such as racism and immigration issues...

Esma   May 4th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

I'm furious over that acquittal, someone is dead, and there's NO punishment? That is absolutely unacceptable.

Jana, Indiana   May 4th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

It sounds like the swine flu was not as bad as first reported, thank goodness.

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:19 pm ET

It never seem to amaze me how some people may get away with causing some one else death with such technical calosity while other get life sentences.

Tell me, what lesson have they learned?

David, Indiana   May 4th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

I'm glad you're reporting on Alex Arellano, that's a I don't know how to describe it, horrifying, crime, and all those murders are truly news and affect the young people and everyone in that commuity deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with Alex's family, friends, and loved ones. I don't know if the media comes up with the answers, but I feel the reporting helps answers and better understanding come to light.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA (follow @edhenrycnn)   May 4th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

what is it with teens and murder now? confused as if there isn't anything to do for us too keep out of trouble.

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Anderson, why is he a ‘Mexican immigrant’? He was here illegally. Please don’t start with the PC ‘undocumented immigrant’ stuff. He committed a crime to be here.

So because he was illegal, he deserved to be beat to death?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:20 pm ET

So why is it that the Jena 6 beat up a white guy and put him in the hospital, and THEY were the victims. This time white guys beat up a Hispanic and they're racists.

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

It's beyond me! Who decided that having straight A's translates into being a good and respectful human being?

Laura - Va   May 4th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

I believe it was a hatecrime. So teenage kids beat to death a twenty five year old man? Where were the other fighters who were fighting with Ramirez? I don't call one Mexican man agaisnt several high school football students a street fight.

starr formerly known as vincent   May 4th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

@ Rikki, Fargo ND

Well said about Dr. Gupta...he sacrificed a lot to bring us the best information he could on the flu. We all should be very grateful to him.

On the issue of the beating death of the gentleman in PA. I don't know the legal facts or details, however, the verdict would appear to be somewhat suspicious.

I heard that there will be a Federal investigation of a hate crime.

Cessy, Chicago   May 4th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Chicago RedEye magazine reported today that the violence is Chicago has been down. I find that hard to believe.

I hope that whatever happened to the young 15yr old boy sends a message to any kids and teenagers that there is no good in getting involved with a gang. What happened to this young man is tragic. He was set up. Let this be an eye opener to any parent who looks the other way when things go wrong with their children.

Isabelle   May 4th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Good evening, Anderson, Erica, and fellow bloggers! I'd like to extend my sympathy to Alex's family and friends. Why the violence? Perhaps gangs and drug pushers should be categorized as terrorists, and arrested, tried and punished as such.

Marienel Reading, PA   May 4th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Of course It is a hate crime! It is unbelievable that they were acquitted. This is Louisiana all over again.

Diane   May 4th, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Mayor Daley is too busy trying to get the Olympics to come to Chicago rather than concentrating efforts to keep Chicago Public School children safe.

Maureen, Georgia   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

This is clearly injustice, simple assault & this kid died. I hope this is not the end & these boys need to be brought to justice.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA (follow @edhenrycnn)   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Everything can be considered a hate crime. Oh I murdered a teacher, that could be a hate crime against teachers. I think the hate crime statute is pointless.

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Sometimes the law and the many technicalities honestly drives me crazy! Not enough evidence that it's a hate crime? What???

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

What the justice in that. A man lost his life.

azeez, Hillside, NJ   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Yes!!! Not surprising, 12 whites jury – If these where 2 Latino or black kids – it will be a different story. This is what minorities have to face in this country...Shame!!!

Rebekah   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

@Miss J – exactly what I was thinking.

it's 2009 and people still have to watch their backs at night because they're different from other people. this is absolutely horrible. we should be past this by now....

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:23 pm ET

This c ase was a travesty. I'd like to see all of the parents of the perpetrators interviewed. This case sends a message way beyond the relationship of this specific case to hispanic people.

Dodie from Irvine, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Just shivering for minority groups...

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

I think the messgae is different. If you are here illegally, taking American jobs, the watch out.

Cessy, Chicago   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

The President wanted to get away for awhile? Is he for real?

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

I want to thank AC360 for having Toobin. A brilliant legal mind that we don't hear enough from.

Can the Supreme Court make any big decision about the indeceny? I know the FCC can fine people, but I didn't think laws could be made that could impose any kind of censorship unless there it's not during the safe harbor.

Shelley, Atlanta   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Thought we had come further... this is outrageous and makes my stomach hurt... sends an awful message that you can get away with murder.

Fay - California   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

It sounds like the outcome of this case in Shenandoah was a foregone conclusion – I hope there's a thorough reexamination of the facts.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   May 4th, 2009 10:24 pm ET

I have to agree with Jeff on this one. I wonder why these standards are never applied when a white is killed or attacked by a member of a minority. The MSM doesn't even consider that it might be a hate crime when that happens.

Racism and racial hatred works both ways.

Dave Voiles   May 4th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Why do we even need to ask this question? Of Course it is a hate crime, why do we think he was attacked and the guilty were found not guilty!

Have we lost all perspective on matters such as this?

barbara,hudson, north carolina   May 4th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Just one question, Was the hispanic man who was killed here an illegal immigrant. Just curious?

John   May 4th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

The beating of the mexican went to a jury. Blame your peers for letting them go on the simple assault.

Robin in Tampa, FL   May 4th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

@Mike, Syracuse, NY – someone got killed and race was the motivating factor. In the Jenna 6 case people were seriously hurt, but they tired those youngsters as if they killed someone. I don't excuse what the Jenna kids did but the punishment did not fit the crime.

With liberty and justice for all. Kids say that each morning and it is so sad for the children of the Mexican immigrant who was murder and his assassins are free. I wonder how they will feel every morning when they say "with liberty and justice for all" knowing that his father did not receive justice?

Jonathan Wilson   May 4th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

I have been more outraged about the sexual overtones for up coming television shows during regular season football games. The Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction was no malfuntcion, however at some beaches in the summer you see more.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

@Miss J, No he didn't deserve to die, but tell the whole story. He'd be alive today if he stayed home. Many people are without jobs, and millions of illegals are taking US jobs. That could cause lots of resentment.

Jordan   May 4th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

The footage of the courhouse after these kids were acquited should shed some light on what their motives where. The bottom line is....someone died and I saw the defendants and their friends hooting and hollering and one girl shouting about how she was "right". There was zero respect shown for that man whether it was intended or not and that is just disgusting and sad. Whatever their charge....they should all go to prison.

Vanessa, TX fllws @edhenrycnn   May 4th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

David, Indiana   May 4th, 2009 10:27 pm ET

@Isabel, I don't know if we've hit the bottom of the well on the markets and economy but it's exciting and a relief to see that "v" pattern on the stock markets, that looks like a market upturn. And yes, that is beautiful view of Hollywood, and no no one can control a sneeze. You cracked me up a bit with that question.

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Ok wait. Regardless of whether hate crime charges were tacked on – weren't they supposed to be charged with murder as well? So what happened to these other charges? They just got acquitted on everything?

Jasmine-Spokane, WA (follow @edhenrycnn)   May 4th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

I don't believe there was a hate crime. The problem with this case was that they were yelling slurs while beating the victim. People can get carried away with words while anger is spewing out of them physically.

Marianne in Utah   May 4th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Obviously, the strategy of the prosecutor was faulty. Incredible.

Dulcie - Denver   May 4th, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Patrice Palmer   May 4th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Most of the violence comes down to a lack of self-respect. If you don't respect or value yourself, you most certainly won't apply those feelings to others.

It's also always so much easier to blame others for your own faults and problems. The devil makes nobody do anything; it's time to take that poor excuse of a crutch away and require people take responsibility for their own actions! Dehumanizing and marginalizing others is unconscionable. People who do this are no better than Hitler and the Nazis of WWII. All human beings deserve the same human rights.

Had to sign in and say this is a HATE CRIME and those accused are GUILTY and should get Life for taking a human life. Yes words equal hate crime. 2 on one should be equated with Hate Crime. The only reason those boys were freed is because of their race, and who was sitting on the jury. Sickening. Those boys are as evil as Hitler.

This verdict has set us back 50years. 2 steps fwd, 4 steps back. I hope the Fed Gov't hurrys and does the right thing.

Chicago is a beautiful city and we Chicagoans love our town. It's the "City that Works", but we all know that it works so well for a reason. There is a reason city workers don't strike in Chicago like they do elsewhere. It's the same reason that when certain residents of Chicago call for an ambulance, none show up.

Part of the price paid to maintain a culture of "acceptable corruption" necessary to uphold this power structure is a sacrifice of certain groups of people. It's paid silently and out of sight and always by the unnoticeables. It requires a system-wide cooperation among politicians, aldermen, police officers, city workers, and organized criminal groups who facilitate and maintain this cooperation.

Anderson, check out "Gang Leader for a Day" by Sudhir Venkatesh. It would be awesome if someone exposed what it's really like to live in poverty on the South Side on National Television. There's a whole new generation out here that are ready and willing to hear it.

I live in Pennsylvania – and I was disheartened when I read last week about the acquittal of the young men accused. I am not a fan of harsh sentences for minors but I believe that their acquittal was injustice. This was a hate crime, and it was murder. I fully support a federal investigation. If it isn't done now, the spectre of this crime will hang over Shenandoah for years to come.

@Mike in Syracuse – "He’d be alive today if he stayed home." Let's not blame the victim. The responsibility for someone's death rests solely on those who committed the crime. Nobody made them do this. Lack of empathy for the victim, and lack of personal responsibility for their own behavior, is a serious issue in these crimes. If these people had to "walk a mile" or ten in their victim's shoes, perhaps their attitude would change.

katie   May 4th, 2009 10:42 pm ET

If you followed the trial, the jury considered the fact that after the first fight stopped and the boys were walking away, Mr. Ramirez jumped one of the boys from behind and started a 2nd fight which meant the it was more assault the murder 3. And racial slurs were said by only one boy BEFORE the fight began, making the racism charges questionable. And lastly, no DNA evidence was collected to confirm who exactly kicked the man in the head, so there was reasonable doubt. Every boy is going to serve jail time for this. It may not be long enough for some people, but is it jail time.

I probably wouldn't be surprised if one of my previous co-workers was a serial killer. I guess I've lost a lot of faith in mankind. People are constantly doing heinous things to others.

Debbie   May 4th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

The truth is that it's Obama's views on social issues that most of the public doesn't agree with, it's just that they don't really know what his true views are because of his adept communication style. Repubs need no rebranding, just better presentation!

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

As I've mentioned before on that story, these people manage to become serials because they know how to fit in. And everybody (neighbours, friends etc.) saying now that he was a great person is just an excuse for them to feel better they didn't noticed. Why do we expect criminals to look "scary" and mean?

Maritza   May 4th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

To Mike in Syracuse, your comment was very disturbing regardless of how you want to spin it.

Esma   May 4th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

I hate when people use religion to manipulate and deceive.

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Today I read a news that said the case of Janet Jackson was having more exposure than the swine flu in America midia. Are you serious?

I can’t believe!

barbara,hudson, north carolina   May 4th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Was this Hispanic male just walking down the street minding his own business, could it be that he provoked the incident? Could we PLEASE look at this from another perspective and consider the fact that he might have antagonized the EVIL white males?

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:46 pm ET

$550,000 for a breast reveal. Something is seriously wrong with our country when that's the kind of BS we use our courts for, let alone the fact that we're still talking about it and giving the story more life.

marlon diaz   May 4th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

i think it is no more freedon for us here or in our own countries i am from guatemala, it is realy sad to here tings like wath hapen with the mexican kill by those boys and realise that our life on the eyes of some wite people dont have any value .

Laura - Va   May 4th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

It was intentional. Wardrope malfunction, yea right.

Krasi, Houston, TX   May 4th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

With everything that kids become witness to nowadays, do we really think that Janet's "exposure" could corrupt them? Come on!!!

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

@miss j …. What i meant was…… that if immigrants and/or hispanics were the ones to brutually beat a white student….. the immigrants would be deported and charged….. and the hispanic would be behind bars with no hestitation…… there is a double standard here…. Are laws made for certain groups of people or ALL of us?

Oh yes I knew what you meant. : )

I was just saying that it wouldn't surprise me if the community engaged in 'vigilante justice' if it were the case that the illegals were the ones to beat a white student.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA (follow @edhenrycnn)   May 4th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

@Isabel I'd rather hear about Janet Jackson than swine flu

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

It must be terrible losing a child ... people do not measure the consequences of their actions

Ashley - Hamlin, NY   May 4th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

The McCann disappearance is devastating, but as I recall the parents left her alone. It makes you wonder why people need a license to have a dog but anyone can have a child.

Margaret in OH   May 4th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Very good point Patrice-

Kurt   May 4th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

The jury has spoken. The media and the suporters of the illegal agenda are enraged because they simply did not win. They exploited this to demonize these young men because it's part of their goal. Ramirez started the fight. Ramirez yelled slurs in Spanish to them. Where is the outrage about that? I grew up in Schuylkill county. I don't want to see the Federal government interfere now and meddle with the law since certain groups are not satisfied!

Patrice Palmer   May 4th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I hope the Craigslist Killer's former fiance gets some counseling. I think everyone should be informed on the signs of sociopathy, psychopathy and narcissism. People might be unpleasantly surprised, but then, knowledge is power.

David Gergen   May 4th, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Hello everyone - tough story out of chicago schools tonight, but worth recognizing that overall, the public schools in chicago are much better today than they were 15-20 years ago. One reason: the mayor took control of the schools and there is more political accountability for results (mayor-run schools seem to do better in big cities). Second reason: the Mayor hired Arne Duncan as superintendent and Duncan did a great job. Where is Duncan today? Well, this is one of the big pluses of the Obama administration: he is our new secretary of education - and a big reformer! So, even as there is bad news tonight on violence, the big picture is more encouraging.

Michelle in L.A   May 4th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

I love that the President and first lady want to be considered just one of the people, and that the keep their relationship fresh by dating. However, they now need to recognize for their safety and others that can no longer just go out amongst the people. They need to bring in the chef of the restaurant they want to visit, decorate the room to change the ambiance, and enjoy a nice dinner for two, and a stroll through the Rose Garden.

Rebekah   May 4th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

YAY! the shot tonite is exactly what I was hoping! i showed that video to my family and my mom almost started crying. it's my parents' song from their wedding... Stand By Me is probably one of the most touching songs EVER. I'm so excited all of these artists were able to record this. I can't believe these are all street performers! simply AMAZING.

John   May 4th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Concerning Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction": It's just a breast! Sadly, we seem to have a much higher acceptance for the amount of violence we all view on TV than we do for nudity. That's what is really perverse.

All of this uproar; fines, money, the Supreme Court – over a nipple.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:50 pm ET

@Esma, I have a hard time connecting the dots between religion and God. Religion has evolved into a platform (and excuse) to socially batter others, in the name of God.

Jesse Segura Elgin,IL   May 4th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I find it sad that we pay a little more attention to celebertiy news like Janet Jackson and her incident than we do to more serious issues.

Glen Up North   May 4th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

@Casey: I think the reason why the FCC has gone so far with the case against Janet Jackson was that no one would have expected partial nudity to occur on the SuperBowl. Regardless of the fact that cheerleaders can appear on screen. Had there been an advance warning basically saying "Parental guidance is advised," the FCC may not have a leg to stand on. Heck, certain TV stations give that warning after every commercial break... regardless of which show is on.

Nattada, Houston TX   May 4th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Thank you for ending the show with something we can smile to.

Everybody needs a time off including Mr. President and the First Lady. They look happy together. I hope they will get a really "time off" that no one even reporters get to see, too.

Megan Dresslar - Shoreline, WA Follow @ed henry cnn   May 4th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Yup! I can’t wait see him on Jay Leno tonight!!!!!! That will be fun!

And I love Gary Tuchman’s reports tomorrow, I can’t wait either!

Kathy Crouch   May 4th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Took daughter to the Dr. with high fever, sore throat, aches etc… He says prob swine flu but has not received test kits from CDC gave her tamaflu. 17hr wait at ER test at Health dept tomorrow is the best we could get. Dr says many patients are going untested but they are getting treated.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   May 4th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Now that would be interesting–being hired as the babysitter to the President's kids. I wonder where they found the sitter? Probably an "inside" job–someone related to the staff.

Miss J   May 4th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

I will definitely be tuning in to Leno tonight.

Jonathan C   May 4th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Blatant hate crime! I sincerely hope that when federal investigators get involved the acquitted teens will serve life for taking one away. The prosecutor obviously didn’t care for accepting the verdict. A town of just 6,000 people and an all white jury is in itself bias and not representative of the population—not even one African American, or other minority, was part of the jury—that is unbelievable. Very upsetting, if it was one of those kids that got injured or killed by the Latino immigrant, sure enough they would have found the minority guilty.

Esma   May 4th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

@ David Gergen-This is quite a violent Monday, and I do agree with you, Chicago has improved by leaps and bounds.

This swine flu was given sooo much hype. Frequently washing hands and cover your mouth while coughing, is this advice going to be echoed thru out the seasonal flu season since more people die every year inspite of vaccinating than from the swine flu.

azeez, Hillside, NJ   May 4th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Mother-in-Law... Dont you just love them! lol

sonia portillo   May 4th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

the young boys that kill the mexican man yest because his origins its wrong and its a crime no matter how you put it the system is not perfect but not to the point to be so blind the way they were acting after they get out it tell you how gulty they are but also what can you spect from them the family was acting the same way its sad because in the future we will hear from these boys that they kill another person time will show the jury how wrong they were by let them get out criminal killers belong in jail . not in the street . if they kill already they will do it again.

Isabel Siaba   May 4th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Anderson, Beautiful sunset behind you! Great!

The upcoming story about the Playing for Change album is so cool. I heard about it this morning on NPR, while driving to work. Great idea and excellent follow through. I can't wait to buy it!

Salade Nicoise – doesn't that have spinach?

David, Indiana   May 4th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

I am surprised that the defendants in Pennsylvania were convicted only of simple assualt, and not even manslaughter. What were the charges that prosecutors were seeking? The question of bias or prejudicial treatment by the court is an issue, but I am surprised that an assualt that results in someone's death is determined to just a simple assualt. Cases like this even with even only two people result in a more stringent penalty. We need to get more into the charges and facts on this.

On the flu, its a new virus, we ignore the red flags at our own peril. It's good to have a responsive public health system and it's even better when the world public health system works with such coordination.

Excellent point by David Gergen, Republicans need to look to their "happy warriors" like Jack Kemp. His passing was very sad news. Sorry to hear about that this weekend.
