April 28th, 2009 10:01 pm ET Good Evening, Anderson! Today was a tough day. The news in the international press, are frightening. Not by economic aspects, which we are following in recent months. But by the human risk involved, which is much worse. |

April 28th, 2009 10:02 pm ET i think the fact that the CDC says they expect deaths from this is going to be the reason why there are deaths from this. |

April 28th, 2009 10:04 pm ET Hello Anderson and Erica! I served the tables for lunch today in my upscale place of employment, hearing dozens coughing and sneezing. I dumped plates of untouched food, having been pushed away by queasy diners. I guess we'll see how adept our CDC is at biolevel research and vaccine creation... |

April 28th, 2009 10:04 pm ET Level 4 seems scary. Hope we do not get to the higher level of swine flu. I am going to keep washing your hands. |

April 28th, 2009 10:05 pm ET Anderson Cooper, Argentina announced that will cancel, until Monday, the flights from Mexico, a measure of precaution which aims to contain the threat of contagion by the swine flu. Is that right? Who is in Mexico and needs to return to these countries, as is?? |

April 28th, 2009 10:06 pm ET Since the oxygen in airplanes is recycled, shouldn't the airlines have an obligation to provide masks at this time on flights to any and all destinations? Has this question come up? Anyone on a plane might be a carrier without even knowing it, making everyone else extremely vulnerable. Some passengers, such as myself, might have a history of respiratory diseases and a resulting immune system deficiency. The pharmacies in my area are out of masks and all I can say, in my instance, is jetBlue shame on you for not protecting your passengers during what is being described as a pandemic. . |

April 28th, 2009 10:06 pm ET It would be interesting to find out what the difference is between people who survive the flu and people who don't. |

| LorenaR |
April 28th, 2009 10:06 pm ET NPR reported today on swine flu fear of 1976, and hope you will also mention this on your report tonight. people were vaccinated at that time and there was no epidemic, but side effects of flu vaccine led to illnesses like Guillain-Barre Syndrome where the body attacks itself. Looking forward to your program tonight. it's just so important NOT to panic! last night, some of the comments sounded sort of panicky, like getting off the bus if someone sneezes? come on.... |

| Rob Edmunds |
April 28th, 2009 10:07 pm ET For Dr Gupta: A number of people have noted that with each transmission, the Swine Flu seems to get milder, with the first transmission, from pigs to humans, the only one that is lethal. If so, what is the structure of the pathology that would produce this? Should we be looking at pigs in Mexico, instead of humans, to find the source? Could Avian Flu have been bred in battery-raised chickens? |
|
| Maureen T, Canada |
April 28th, 2009 10:07 pm ET Good evening Anderson. There are more cases in Canada...4 with a mild case in Toronto...so close...somewhat scary. |

April 28th, 2009 10:08 pm ET Greetings to everyone, especially the best bloggers and FB/Twitter buddies, and our newest addition, Eduarrrrdo (Ed Henry). It seems to me that this swine flu thing is beginning to settle down some. is it just me? |

April 28th, 2009 10:08 pm ET What the experts are saying that the virus is highly contagious, spreads quickly, and like any flu virus is mutating, which makes the search for effective remedies a race against time. Is this exaggeration? |

| Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio |
April 28th, 2009 10:08 pm ET I think the MSM is blowing this thing way out of proportion. Weren't we just doing this about the avian flu? Many people die from the the flu every year. Mexico may be suffering more from it because of their poor air quality and the fact that their sanitation services are inadequate. |
|

April 28th, 2009 10:08 pm ET poor little boy hmm... i hope there ISN'T any connection with this company and swine flu... if so, i smell a lawsuit or at least a LOT of anger. |

April 28th, 2009 10:10 pm ET Hey Anderson I have a question. My question is, has the virus been isolated from swines to call the outbreak swine flu? |

April 28th, 2009 10:10 pm ET I'm not going to lie. The fact that Dr. Gupta is there covering the story on such a potentially deathly disease makes me feel a little hopeful that maybe this won't turn out as bad as many expect it to. |

April 28th, 2009 10:11 pm ET Do the masks really help? Microbes are so, well, um, microscopic, I'd imagine lots of maintenance (hand and mucous membranes washing) would be a better defense. Then again, I'm not a doctor. |

April 28th, 2009 10:11 pm ET Hello Bloggers! It's sad to hear today that there are even more confirmed cases of swine flu. I feel bad for the country of Mexico. Between the drug cartels and now the swine flu, no one is going to want to visit the country. Their economy is going to suffer if it hasn't already. |

April 28th, 2009 10:12 pm ET Everyone keeps saying cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands all of the time, isn't that something people should be doing all of the time? In my house that is called good manners and normal hygiene. |

April 28th, 2009 10:12 pm ET Sharp dressed Man Anderson, : ) Thank you for last night’s show. I found it insightfully relevant. Facts not Fear. It’s what we all needed. Regarding Swine Flu: I’m intrigued by the origins of this bug. The how, where, what of it. I’m looking forward to hearing more of Dr. Gupta’s findings. Not to sound like a nerb… biology is fascinating. Have a good evening. |

April 28th, 2009 10:12 pm ET Very good program tonight about the swine flu. Dr. Sanjay Gupta is really good and 360 is doing a public service by covering it so carefully. It sure beats listening to all those political opinion shows all the time. Thanks to 360 for informing us with facts. |

April 28th, 2009 10:13 pm ET I'm with Jo Ann tonight. I was fine with the coverage last night because I thought it was balanced, but with statements like "Expect Americans to die," it is now becoming ridiculous. The hype is completely out of proportion with what is actually happening. |

| David Gergen |
April 28th, 2009 10:13 pm ET Hello everyone - This swine flu crisis presents not only serious challenges for our public health officials, educators, and others - but also for the President and his administration. How well do you think he has handled this outbreak? And what do you think about Arlen Specter's spectacular switch? To me, it is partly about the way Republicans have allowed conservative groups such as Club for Growth to bring down Republican moderates like Specter in primary battles - and it is also a credit to President Obama and his campaign in persuading some 200,000 Republicans in Pa. to leave their party and sign up as Democrats. Mr. Obama has set about building a big tent - and it is working for him. What do you think? |
|
| Robert Baker |
April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET How can Smithfield categorically deny any connection just because they vaccinate their pigs. Everyone knows there is not universal influenza vaccine. Have they determined that the vaccines they are using are effective against this flu. Stop giving them a pass. |

April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET Evening Anderson, Erica, ....scary! as if we Americans need more problems! question: If that sweet little boy already fully recovered, how can we take care of the others who are currently sick? why are we still concern about death?? |
|
| David, Indiana |
April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET Evening Anderson, Erica, everyone. I'm glad they found patient 0 in La Gloria but mainly I'm glad he's allright and recovering. For some reason its amazing he's such a young child. A friendly cheerful little guy. Thank God he's ok. Yes it's good that the senate confirmed HHS Sec. Kathleen Sebelius. The President need an HHS Sec. in case of urgent health situations like this. How soon will she start filling some of those Asst and Undersecretary positions? Reassuring to hear Dr. Gupta and crew are being cautious and taking all the necessary precautions. |

| George Moore |
April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET why are you saying swine flu started in veracuse mexico and bbc says oxhaca mexico! |
|
| Robert Flynn |
April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET Anderson, I believe its time that the federal government not just issue travel warnings, but travel restrictions to and from Mexico. We can only solve a problem when we steer away from the central issue, or where it started. The swine flu pandemic is sure to spread, and unfortunately cause fatalities. We need to get serious, and fast. |

April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET Nearly all work places, shopping malls and restaurants use antibacterial soaps in their restrooms. Supermarkets sell antibacterial soap products for the home. These products have been proved to kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. Can you please clarify this? It seems counterproductive to ensure hands are washed - but with soap that kills the good germs, too. Thanks. |

April 28th, 2009 10:14 pm ET Time to "dig deeper" - on the hog farm in Mexico. I was raised on a farm and we farrowed and raised hogs (many years ago). If the swine flu was on the farm - they would have lost a large number of animals and their vet would know. |

April 28th, 2009 10:15 pm ET The University of Delaware just issued a health bulletin on their website and via their phone notification system that four university students have been identified as having Influenza and that they show similar traits as those found in the Swine Flu. April 28th, 2009 10:15 pm ET It is great that Mexico City has shutdown many public places. However, wouldn't it be a better idea to shutdown the subways? After all, over 5,000,000 people use it daily, and people are in close contact with each other. |

April 28th, 2009 10:15 pm ET Mike, Syracuse, NY, I have a feeling all the hype about swine flu has something to do with pushing Obama's plan for health care reform through Congress, but that has become a lot easer now that Specter has joined the Dems. |

April 28th, 2009 10:16 pm ET The WHO is now calling this virus the North American Influenza virus. Why are you still calling it swine flu? If it came from swine, tests would be proving it already. |

April 28th, 2009 10:16 pm ET Since this new strain of H1N1 is an amalgam of swine, bird, and human viruses, is it possible that the difference in mortality and morbidity between the United States and Mexico be related to the yearly influenza vaccination? April 28th, 2009 10:16 pm ET Randi Kaye Thank you for your excellent report! As a retired RN, i know that most people do not know how virus are transmitteed. Or how important it is to use a handkerchief and your elbow to cover sneezes and coughs. Thanks again! |

April 28th, 2009 10:16 pm ET A question for Sanjay. Could the high levels of pollution in Mexico City ( that are not present in US cities ) be contributing to the high mortality rate in Mexico City versus the USA ?. The people there must have weakened respiritoty systems because of the constant onslaught to their lungs from one of the most polluted cities in the world. This could be a factor in why we are not seeing so deaths so far outside of Mexico and especially Mexico City. |

April 28th, 2009 10:16 pm ET I traveled to Mexico City about 6 weeks ago and was there for about a day and a half. Although i did not get medical treatment, I believe I may have had "swing flu'. I have had the flu before but never experienced anything like this before. |

April 28th, 2009 10:17 pm ET I agree with the comments on the hype growing out of proportion. Office door handles, subway seats and other such public access surfaces are always germ-infested. I don't quite see why this is making it worse. |

April 28th, 2009 10:18 pm ET Hi Anderson, I'm very curious how Sanjay Gupta feels about domestic US air travel at the moment. My mother and two sisters are scheduled to fly from Miami to visit me in San Francisco, tomorrow, 4/29. There are layovers in Texas and NY. I want them to wear a mask on the plane. One of my sisters is scared enough (both of direct risk from the virus and of getting stranded if things get worse and they do shut down air travel) that she is strongly considering xling the trip. How should I advise them? Thanks, David |

April 28th, 2009 10:18 pm ET They say fever over 100 is a strong sign of this flu. My normal dailey temp is actually 97.3 and NOT 98.6. Does this mean that if I have a temp of 99, I should worry? |

April 28th, 2009 10:18 pm ET @Mike in Syracuse-This could be the one! Scary, hey? I think we all need to use pre-cautionary steps because we do not know. Therefore fear sets in of the unknown (kind a like like Obama) and then big "freakout." I think panic is not neccessary but caution is. Crystal ball was broken for the Republicans because they cut funding out for flu vaccine as they did for the COPS program. Glad to see the House voted it back in last week. Keeps more police on the streets for the next five years. |

April 28th, 2009 10:19 pm ET @David Gergen. Never heard of Club for Growth. Is it religious based? Arlen Spector's comments leading up to today, and today, are very telling. He's fed up and I agree. The Republican party has been hijacked by a niche societal segment that would be better served by the creation of a third party. The Republican party, of which I used to belong, is so confused about who it is and what it wants to be that there is no clear focus. |

April 28th, 2009 10:19 pm ET Yes, there are germs everywhere. They are supposed to be. That's how we build up our immune systems. Exposure to germs is actually a positive thing for that reason, which is why our Purell-soaked children might suffer later. Remember, there is such thing as killing "good bacteria," too. Some exposure to germs is necessary. The odds of these germs making you significantly ill are very small. You're frightening people unnecessarily. |

April 28th, 2009 10:20 pm ET As an American living abroad in a town on the northern edge of Mexico City, I just thought I'd share that I am not worried about my health. The city was not shut down this past weekend, although now with restaurants, bars, and movie theaters closed the streets are bit empty. I've heard that the mayor of DF has asked the federal government to stop the public transportation system (I'm not sure if this is true) and if this happens, the city will grind to a halt as many people, including myself, rely on pubic transportation to move about. Since not many people have actually died from this flu (remember Mexico City has 20 million people), this move would be overly drastic and a huge inconvenience. |

April 28th, 2009 10:20 pm ET I don't understand why this is a bigger deal than the regular flu which kills thousands every year. Isn't everyone making a bid deal out of something that always exists. April 28th, 2009 10:21 pm ET I know Randi Kaye's piece tried to tread that fine line between informative and alarmist, but I think it tended towards alarmist. April 28th, 2009 10:22 pm ET @ David Gergen – I think the administration is doing well with it's response to the swine flu. On Sunday they took the necessary action to release resources needed and at the same time did a good explanation of explaining the action so as not to cause people to panic. I found Senator Specter's announcement today surprising. The republican party seems to be loosing members daily. The party of "no" obviously isn't working for them. It's nice to see a Presidnet who thinks before he speaks and acts, makes an effort to keep his campaign promises and listens to both sides before making decisions. Who wouldn't want to be under that tent? Thanks for blogging with us tonight. |

April 28th, 2009 10:22 pm ET @David Gergen, I don't see that the administration has done much of anything. The only hope to contain a spread would have been to close the boarder, cut air travel and quarantine anyone infected. They did none of that. Fortunately this flu seems no more fatal than usual. I think Spectter switched just because it's better odds to win reelection. |

April 28th, 2009 10:22 pm ET I am a Biology professor and Physical Therapist in Charlotte, NC. I just saw your piece on how germs can be spread through contact on the subway. April 28th, 2009 10:23 pm ET alex "I find that the media is doing a mass scare, there are more than 12 million people in Mexico city alone 156 deaths? That’s what .001 % Truth please." @ Alex and Mike, the big deal is that any one lost life is a precious one lost. Well, I like to believe so, anyway. Once you die, you DIE! You're gone. There is no coming back and trying life again. So little seriousness is given to death as so little value is given to a life that one might ask, "What's the big deal?" |

April 28th, 2009 10:23 pm ET The media is recommending the use of hand sanitizers, however, isn't that erroneous information? This flu, as any other, is caused by a VIRUS. Hand sanitzers kill BACTERIA, The ones that kill viruseses are not readily available, I believe, unless you are in the medical community. Please clarify to the viewing public and/or let us know what kind of hand sanitizers we should be purchasing. |

April 28th, 2009 10:25 pm ET If all of the deaths are in Mexico, and first spread from pigs to humans and this is an anomaly that it is being transmitted from person to person. April 28th, 2009 10:25 pm ET Why is it not obvious that the current seasonal flu vaccine which, according to the CDC website, contains A strain H1N1 would be effective during this current "swine flu" epidemic?? All confirmed reports state that the current swine flu virus is also H1N1. Don't we already have at least a partial vaccine to the swine flu. Any individual who's been routinely getting the flu vaccine each year should have a great boost with this year's vaccine and pretty much have an immunity of sorts to this swine virus. Booster responses are always more effective than primary responses. |

April 28th, 2009 10:25 pm ET @David Gergen: I feel a bit sorry for Pres. Obama. Here he has yet another crisis (i.e. Swine Flu) to deal with. I just hope we don't have any deaths result from the Swine Flu and that we don't have to resort to closing down businesses, schools, etc. Definitely won't help our economic woes. As far as Specter goes, that was a shocker for me! I think he's just looking for some publicity. Afterall, he could still support Pres. Obama and not necessarily switch parties. Sometimes I think we should get rid of political parties. Not sure what purpose they really pose anymore. |

April 28th, 2009 10:26 pm ET Watching Randi Kaye's rept my thought is that it's impossible to avoid this flu, nowhere to hide, so to speak. Very sad to hear the number of fatalities is increasing in Mexico. @Isabel, that's a good question about certain foods that boost the immune response, I hadn't heard that about yams. I do know that generally being well nourished helps, and vitamin C found in citrus fruits and tomatoes also backs up the immune system. Drinking plenty fluids is undoubtedly part of treatment for the flu, but maybe part of prevention too. |

April 28th, 2009 10:26 pm ET Perhaps Dr. Gupta could address my question: Are the authorities advising Tamiflu and Relenza to be used sparingly, only for those who need it, only for those who have more than a mild illness? Otherwise, the swine flu might develop resistance to it, and we might run out of enough to help those who really need it. Serious business if we have resistance show up in the anti-virals, as they appear to be our only weapon against this new virus. |

Not knowing who the next person walking through the door is I have in the back of my mind about the reality of Swine Flu and my increased chance of contracting this virus. April 28th, 2009 10:28 pm ET @Vito – one of the answers I have been given is the way this flu attacks and who it attacks. The most vulnerable are not the very young, very old and infirm, as is typically the case with the thousands of deaths each year from the "regular" flu. Swine flu is more aggressive in healthy young adults. Plus, the CDC has said since yesterday it does expect deaths in the US related to swine flu. There are still a number of questions tonight – we'll try to answer as many as we can. |

April 28th, 2009 10:28 pm ET Is there a way to tell after an infection if it was swine flu? My husband and Iwere on vacation in MX last month. April 28th, 2009 10:29 pm ET Back in the late 60's I almost died from a flu called the Hong Kong flu. Remember that one folks? Why aren't we calling the flu the Mexican flu rather than the swine flu? Could you please ask Sumjay Gupta if that could be corrected since it originated from Mexico and folks that were in Mexico contracted it, so let's call it the Mexican flu. Number two relating to Specter. He jumped ship because he knew he was going to lose this time and he realized or thinks he has a better chance switching to Dem party. It's all about him folks, not at all about the parties. Let's get real here...he's just another phony politician, period. |

April 28th, 2009 10:29 pm ET @ Kathy with the 22 year old daughter with lung issues. I have basically had one functioning lung my entire liffe (am now 49) and I've found my best line of defense in these situations is a conversation with my primary care physician, my pulmonologist and the respiratory department at my local hospital. I'm lucky in that my medical team works well together and all are aware of my "special" needs. Actually I was at the local hospital today for a minor procedure with my pulmonologist and 4 respiratory therapists. Guess what we were talking about - swine flu - how quickly a vaccine could be produced - the preparedness of the local hospital. Since 9/11 it's amazing the level of preparedness of hospitals to deal with such issues. |

April 28th, 2009 10:30 pm ET David Gergen I forgot to comment on your question as to how the President & his administration are handling the flu situation. So far, the seem to be right on top of it. April 28th, 2009 10:31 pm ET With all the respect I am a democrat. But I think that President Obama is politiciting the Airforce One flying plane in NYC. April 28th, 2009 10:32 pm ET Hello again everyone - thanks for your comments. On Sen. Specter's switch, he brings the Democratic vote total to 59, Al Franken would make it officially 60. That would mean that if the Republicans try to filibuster a major Obama initiative (say, health care), and IF the Democrats all stick together, they can stop the filibuster and pass the bill. With filibusters becoming popular in recent years for parties in the minority, 60 has thus become a magic number. Specter does strengthen the President's hand but please note that Specter is insisting he will remain pretty independent in his judgments so that he (and perhaps other moderate Democrats) will not be automatic votes for the White House. They in fact will have a good deal of power. As Dana Perino of the Bush WH told Larry King tonight, the Dems may soon have 60 seats in the Senate but they won't necessarily have those 60 votes. Fascinating times. |

Not too many details have come out regarding the student at the University of Notre Dame who was confirmed as having swine flu. Odd thing is that in this case, the student did not travel or has not traveled outside the campus.....Hmmm. |

April 28th, 2009 10:33 pm ET I am a Republican that voted Democratic this last election because GOP has gone off the deep end – they are very narrow minded & focused on reacting to the Democrates instead of creating a new idea of their own...they've become so narrow in their idealism that I can't support them any longer – when they wake up & get back to doing what is best for this country instead of just fighting to fight I'll get back to voting Republican. |

April 28th, 2009 10:33 pm ET Well,I just came from our local pharmacy and I was told that Tamiflu is not available, and they don't know when they will get any. How is this possible?Every state should have large supply ready to go! Is this what our government calls preparedness? |

April 28th, 2009 10:33 pm ET The test is the test. As long as the test is testing knowledge needed for the position, and everyone had the same opportunity to be tested, then the results are the results. This is pure reverse discrimination. It's time there are no more 'protected groups'. |

April 28th, 2009 10:34 pm ET It's so aggravating to hear about cases such as the firefighters one. Race should never be in consideration and the most qualified person for the job should receive it. Today, however, people so afraid of being blamed that I am not sure that anything is ever justly done. |

April 28th, 2009 10:34 pm ET Anderson, no one has mentioned or i haven't heard anyone mention about what the incubation period , or how long the virus lasts on surfaces? Good luck. |

April 28th, 2009 10:34 pm ET Anderson, there was no need to ask David if he agreed with Candy's assessment that Specter's motives were political. Specter already admitted that he had checked with his pollsters, heard the bad news, and decided to save his skin by becoming a turncoat. I say good riddance. I thought he was a Democrat anyway. |

April 28th, 2009 10:34 pm ET Very pleased that Arlen Specter switched over to the Democrats. He has an excellent chance of winning his general election next year, and the GOP still hasn't learned its lesson. April 28th, 2009 10:35 pm ET People with the best immune systems typically get more sick with these type of viruses, because of the cytokine storm. Could it be that people in Mexico have better immune systems than us, in the U.S., therefore that is why there are more deaths in Mexico? |

April 28th, 2009 10:35 pm ET Why are they not telling the cities that these infected people are in? Then people could avoid travel to those places and help with the spread of this flu. I wouldn`t travel to a city if i knew it was there. |

April 28th, 2009 10:36 pm ET I am sure I have this flu. I called my doctor to make an appointment to come in and see what could be done for treatment, she said to not come to the office, I would spread the virus. Instead, I was told to stay home and call her if I got worst? Is this the only treatment for this flu? I have never felt this bad in my life! Between the fever, chills, headache, and body aches it is horrible! |

April 28th, 2009 10:37 pm ET With respect to the fire fighters.. I would rather have the guy or gal who is the smartest and best able to do the job rather then worry about race or color.. April 28th, 2009 10:37 pm ET How is the swine flu affecting the average doctor office procedures to diagnose? My wife just called the doctor for some medication to cure something not at all related to the flu. However, the extent to the probing was, "Have you been to Mexico, been in contact with anyone from Mexico, or someone whom recently visited Mexico?" We are just outside of Philadelphia and my wife is a teacher in Philadelphia. How is she supposed to know the true answer to this? I am not suggesting that she has it the swine flu, but this seemed like a very weak procedure. At what point do they make a major change to protocol? |

April 28th, 2009 10:37 pm ET @Krasi, Houston TX I agree I felt better about the outbreak when I saw Dr. Gupta reporting on it. @Isabel It does seem like a race against time. The only advantage that we have now is that we know what strains of flu are in this new swine flu virus. One question for Dr. Gupta and Dr. Del Rio. Did the virus have such an impact in Mexico because people at first treated it like an ordinary flu? Are there places in Mexico where the flue has not yet made in roads? Listening to answers now...so Sanjay and Dr. Del Rio agree that the summer heat will slow this virus down? |

April 28th, 2009 10:38 pm ET This comment is in reference to the New Haven firefighters that were discriminated aginst. This isn't an isolated incedence. The fire/ems community is riddled with reverse discrimination. I was deinied a job which was initially offered as a fire/emt in Florida because it turned out the hire list wasn't "diverse" enough. They scrapped the entire hire list and restarted the application process. I spent months going through testing and interviews only to loose out on a postion because of my skin color. I'm really glad these guys brought this widely practiced descrimination out into the light. |

April 28th, 2009 10:39 pm ET good evening everyone... It is scary when we really dont know when this swine flu is going to last. Just like I'm still trying to learn more about how this all started. I work in a hospital setting and a memo went out indicating how we can prevent the spread. It was useful information but then again, we still dont know how this will stop... We just need to continue to follow protocols like washing our hands, etc. and keep pur eyes open but not panic. |

April 28th, 2009 10:40 pm ET Race has no place in the workforce. Quotas are just another form of racism enforced by the government. We need to take a step back and realize that we need people qualified and capable of doing a job fast, efficient and with minimal liability. I have a high school education, make 6 figures a year and as a business owner, I can say first hand we need to get back to promoting people based upon what they contribute to the success of group and not based upon some quota that hurts everyone. The government doesn't make it happen, and the more we depend upon them to "give us something" the more we're all going to lose more than that the little bit we ever thought we got. |

April 28th, 2009 10:41 pm ET Many wonder why so many died early in Mexico. No one seems to have asked an anthropologist. In many areas of Mexico, people are reluctant to go to doctors or to anyone of governmental authority. (In small towns doctors are often med students sent out for practice). Many people are also desperately poor. I had to rush a young girl to a hospital because she had a temp of 104+ for 4 days. She had Scarlet Fever and would have died later that day. |

April 28th, 2009 10:42 pm ET there was a group of seniors at my school who went to Mexico a little bit ago and there were a couple kids who weren't feeling good today. so that brings me to my question: How long has the Swine Flu been actively infecting people? A week? Two weeks? A month? |

April 28th, 2009 10:42 pm ET How different is the swine flu from Guillain-Barre Lindry Sundrome, as I was diagnosed in 1971, but survived. It has the similar symptoms which caused a near death for me. Respiratory and shut down of the nervous system with paralysis. |

April 28th, 2009 10:43 pm ET Regarding the firefighter promotion supreme court case. If a fire dispatcher can provide a recording from a citizen stating " my house is on fire, send me a fire crew that represents the racial demographic of my city/town" then maybe municipalities are correct in allowing race and politics to guide their promotional policies. But until that day comes perhaps only the most qualified and highest scoring aplicants should be promoted to positions where life and death decisions are made evry day. |

April 28th, 2009 10:43 pm ET gee, if I studied for 3 months and received the highest grade, I would want the job that I earned and I would not want it denied to me just because I am white. all firefighters, no doubt, received the same study materials or were given a chance to develop them, if they cared to do the work. these are not simple tests; they are long and difficult and the material expands annually as the hazards faced by first responders grows. I also want the firefighter with the highest grade to be in charge if there is an emergency at my house, regardless of his/her race. How much longer do we have to put up with this reverse discrimination? what's wrong with an objective criteria for recognizing excellence and promoting civil servants? Reverse discrimination is just as wrong as outright discrimination against any race. It is still true that "two wrongs don't make a right." |

April 28th, 2009 10:43 pm ET If you’re sick…Stay Home. The only way to stop the spread of the flu is to contain Yourself if you are sick. It's here in the US and will get worse. People will most likely continue to go to work if they are sick…and infect numerous people throughout the day x10×10×10… The government should reimburse a person for doing the Responsible thing by staying home from work if they are sick. The money in an emergency fund should go towards encouraging those infected to contain themselves and limit their exposure to others. Paying someone to stay home from work would be an effective incentive and would contain the spread of the virus. |

April 28th, 2009 10:43 pm ET I think all schools in the United state should be closed until this is under control so as to not keep the spread going on concered mum |

April 28th, 2009 10:43 pm ET @David Gergen…With Arlen Specter so established in his career, why wouldnt he just change to Independent? I would much rather have seen that happen. April 28th, 2009 10:51 pm ET @George, well said. Every promotion in every position should be due to merit. April 28th, 2009 10:51 pm ET @Jolene, good question about the WHO and CDC. I had not heard, though I live in Indiana about the student at Notre Dame, and it is odd that the student as you noted is said not to have travelled outside campus and yet he still has the flu. David Gergen, you said it. Arlen Specter's becoming a Democrat was a lightning bolt. That does work out for President Obama, but I do worry about how that works for the Republicans. Anderson, Question about public health measures in Mexico. Are restaurant only open for take out in Mexico City or throughout Mexico? |

April 28th, 2009 10:51 pm ET Even though the masks are supposed to help, if you really think about it, aren't they doing more harm than good? Those masks aren't very comfortable, probably causing people to touch their face more often! That's worse! |

April 28th, 2009 10:52 pm ET Supreme court case on CT Fire Fighters: I just saw this article on AC360 and want to say that court has a precedent in this area. The court has said that affirmative actions are geered towards EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND NOT EQUAL RESULTS. The court is more likely to say that fire fighters from all races were given equal opportunity to take the test. The reults of the test don't matter. Who knows, maybe the court might reverse itself and overturn precedent. |

April 28th, 2009 10:56 pm ET I am currently in Tapachula, Mexico with the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program (I have been here since August, 2008) and am finding it increasingly more difficult to find essential supplies such as water. Yesterday I went to over fourteen phamacies in search of face masks for my roommate and I–there are none. The university I teach at, like all schools in Mexico, has suspended classes until May 6th. I have a chronic condition that requires medication and have been receiving my medication from friends who ship it to me from my hometown, Washington, DC– Do you think that international postal services will be slowed due to the Swine Flu? Thanks, Derrick Ryan |

April 28th, 2009 10:56 pm ET I'm an American living in Mexico City. We're not worried. Mexicans have a tendency to self-medicate, bc they can't afford to go to the doctor. As the new flu strain seems to be responding to anti-virals, we're focusing on prevention and protection. |

April 28th, 2009 10:56 pm ET Where are you going to go on a big rig? Seriously? You really think no one's going to notice? You'd never make it as a pirate! Goodnight everyone! Or, I should say, "Oink, oink!" |

April 28th, 2009 10:56 pm ET I just came back from a business meeting in Mexico City, and i have never seen downtown so lonely and just beeing at the airport, you can feel the tension these people are facing toward this epidemic. Even McDonalds restraunts have closed their stores with the exception of their drive-thru. Its unbelievable! |

April 28th, 2009 10:57 pm ET Wow! Serious night. If we all stayed home the flu would still survive and be spread. Level 4 is bad, if anything is a great concern it should be those visiting people in the hospital. Great night, have a great day!! |

April 28th, 2009 10:57 pm ET The report on the reverse discrimination case failed to answer the main questions that it the subject provokes. What about the test was in favor of white firefighters? Why arrant there any interviews with the black firefighters? what is the history of the results on this test? who has gained in the past from acting upon affirmative action? What is the difference between a racially biased question and a non-biased question? Their is a blatant lack of data in this story. A story cannot be told on expert opinions only especially when all they do is repeat the previous statement and their position without giving any information on the case itself. |

April 28th, 2009 10:57 pm ET Re. Firefighters. How can we make an informed opinion with no information about what was in the test that was considered unfair and why and by which professionals? |

April 28th, 2009 10:58 pm ET My daughter is planning to cruise to Mexico next week. Will travelers on board be protected from the flu, and if it happens to infect someone on the ship, how will they be able to treat sick ones and stop it from spreading to all on board. |

April 28th, 2009 10:59 pm ET I don't know if this has been addressed yet. Can your dog (or any pet therefore) catch the swine flu and can it be passed on to humans from your dog (or pets). |

April 28th, 2009 10:59 pm ET Anderson ... has anyone investigated the stolen virus vials from the U.S. Army base in MD about two weeks ago. They thought it was equine flu virus capable of being transmitted to humans. It is ironic that we now have a breakout of flu (swine or other) shortly afterwards that is infecting humans. Please research further. |
