Good Evening Anderson, Erica. Looking forward to update on Ms. Calif., and more on long life. Oh, and Pythons rule! Thanks for that.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:00 pm ET

goodevening everyone. i so do not get the importance of the beauty contestants comments? she is simply believing what she was taught instead of thinking for herself.

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:00 pm ET

Hey everyone: Anderson, Erica, David Gergen, all at AC360, the Tribe, and all the bloggers!
Happy Earth Day!!!

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Hi Anderson, Erica and fellow bloggers!

We're half way through the week.....Woo Hoo!

Chris Sosa - Boston, MA   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Good evening, Anderson, Erica, David, Jack, and bloggers!

Disturbing news in the Craigslist killer case.

Vanessa, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Hiya Anderson, Erica, my smartees..Good evening to all! :)

This Craigslist killer had a crazy double life! It all seems like a real live episode of Law & Order..but in this great country, hes innocent till proven guilty..

Nattada, Houston TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Good evening Anderso, Erica, David Gergen, AC 360 Team, and all bloggers.

Happy Earth Day to you all.

It is disgusting how Markoff keeps victims' item as a souvenirs of successes. It is so sick.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

how ironic, his souvinirs in a gray's anatomy book.

Dodie from Irvine, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

That information is pretty chilling. Sounds like the makings of a potential serial killer. Glad to see he is not running around.

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

good evening Anderson and crew...

Happy Earth Day! I look forward to another interesting night–maybe another surprise?

Rafael Bronx,NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:01 pm ET

Hey Anderson, Erica, and bloogers

It's Earth Day!

starr formerly known as vincent   April 22nd, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, et al, (& Erica David G.)

Good evening fellow bloggers! Glad to be with ya tonight.

Pakistan is rapidly becoming a nightmare....looking forward to 360 report.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica and all my fellow evening conversationalists! Hope everyone had a good day!

I'm a big believer in innocent until proven guilty and being from ND I tend to see the good in everybody...but the case against this guys seems to be pretty incriminating!

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:03 pm ET

It's great that they caught Markoff (even though he (allegedly) killed someone), because the evidence against him sounds like he'd only get more and more violent.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:03 pm ET

This Craigslist killer story sounds so much like a Law and Order SVU plot.....hmmmm should make a suggestion for that when this settles down.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Good evening everyone!

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:04 pm ET

Why does everyone keep saying this guy has "preppy good looks." I think he's a little geeky and plain looking frankly.

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:04 pm ET

wow! This Craigslist killer is really creepy...I feel bad for the fiancee. I hope she is strong enough to face this "nightmare" and be able to move on. I also hope that he is found guilty and put away for good.

Dodie from Irvine, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:04 pm ET

He looks so unassuming. pretty frighting...

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer looked like 'regular guys' too.

Dulcie - Denver   April 22nd, 2009 10:05 pm ET

Wow, sounds like they just might have caught a serial killer before he escalated much. He sounds really creepy.

Preppy good looks sometimes disguise a sociopath. Ted Bundy was clean-cut and intelligent, but completely twisted.

Julie - Boston   April 22nd, 2009 10:05 pm ET

I use Craigslist often but women need to think twice before going to a hotel room with a stranger. Just spells danger.

Atlanta   April 22nd, 2009 10:05 pm ET

The Craigslist killer reminds me of Dexter from the TV show.

Rafael Bronx,NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:05 pm ET

What's scary is that he had a double life. One that was supposedly happy and another one that was dark and scary.

Steve - southern Illinois   April 22nd, 2009 10:06 pm ET

Greetings everyone! Happy Earth Day!!

good evening everyone.. .thanks for joining us tonite.

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Hi Anderson

Andrea, TN   April 22nd, 2009 10:07 pm ET

I never understand why people are all in disbelief when someone who looks "clean-cut" is accused of something horrible. Psychos come in all kinds of packages. And the more successful ones do tend to be good looking or at least very charismatic, one of the two at least and maybe both.

Laura - Springfield, Va   April 22nd, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Phillip Markoff is already having his trial on air. Evidence is being brought to light in the news hour instead of the courtroom. When his trial does finally come, will the court be able to find an impartial jury?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:07 pm ET

This poor girl has in the course of a couple of days had her whole life crumble down around her...it doesn't surprise me that she is trying to defend her fiance and that she is staying with him for now...

Barbara in Boston   April 22nd, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Re: Craigslist suspect: I heard an interview with the Suffolk Co DA on a local station. The Boston Police had him under surveillance for a couple of days and made the arrest when it looked like he was trying to leave the state. Sounds like they have a lot of evidence tying him to the robberies and murder.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:07 pm ET

Wow....i really don't trust the pretty boys at Starbucks anymore.....

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

The world really is made up of crazy perverted weirdos. The girls that find the nice guys are just lucky.

Lori from IL   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica, Team 360 and Fellow Bloggers –

Living a double life? Scary stuff - makes one wonder if we ever really "know" another person...

News out of Pakistan today is not good.....

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

But how well do you really know someone?

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

interestingly enough.. these sociopaths are manipulative, smart enough to know NOT to be noticed and some are very intelligent.

Rebekah   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica and the everyone at AC360!

Hope everyone had an awesome Earth Day :)

Julie - Boston   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

sounds like classic sociopath

Dodie from Irvine, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:08 pm ET

Good Evening Anderson. Nice to be here.

Dulcie - Denver   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

@Julie – Boston I have too and had nothing but good experiences. Then again, I wouldn't just go to a hotel room to meet someone. Meeting in public is the safer way to go.

Nattada, Houston TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Good evening Randi. Thanks for your report.
If he is ended up the killer, I feel really sorry for his fiancee. He must be very good in concealing his second life that she is still defence him. She is also a victim in this, too.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Wow Sarah Palin yet again??? Can we get past it already!
So sad Levi had to stoop so low as to demeane the mother of his child!

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Markoff is toast. I am sure there are many people who live "double lives" without being detected.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

anderson, so glad you could join us tonite. :) j/k

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

That interview with Levi was very good! Interesting stuff. Watch out Bristol – Here come's Levi with his lawyer.

Jen   April 22nd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

Craigslist killer sounds alot like the Canadian husband-wife murderers, Bernardo and Homolka. They were a good looking couple who abducted school girls and assaulted and murdered them.

Rafael Bronx,NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm ET

I totally agree we need to know who were spending time with or who were dating. We need to know the true and know about their background and such stuff. It's just creepy spending time with somebody who may be a twisted person behind the public eyes.

Lauren--NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Hey, Anderson. You just made me laugh out loud with that Miss California remark ("...and what it's like in her country.") Nice burn.

Good evening to everyone.

Donna in MD   April 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Interesting story about that guy. I'd be curious to hear more from that lab partner who sounds like she saw through him? Maybe CNN can get an interview?

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Hi Anderson! Any information about the Craigslist family and what they have to say about him? How about family mental history, abuse?...

gayle mccauley Malden,Mass.   April 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm ET

Greetings to All! I find that the ability for someone to hide their 'monster' side from their loved ones is terrifying. As susceptible targets, vulnerable women have their planned futures and sometimes their lives taken from them.I would think they would be afraid to ever trust anyone again. That is, if they lived through the ordeal.

LauraMac09   April 22nd, 2009 10:11 pm ET

RE: Craigslist Killer Fiance...no one wants to believe they were going to marry a psychopath!

Happy earth day Anderson, Erica , bloggers and AC360 team

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:11 pm ET

Really creepy because I am very manipulative....does this put me at risk to be a sociopath?...... must try and re-evaluate my personality..lol

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Look, we've all got secrets. Let's not all pretend we're perfect and don't have any skeletons in our closets.

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:12 pm ET

Anderson,

"What does that say"

It says that he is a disgusting weirdo freak who needs to be in jail yesterday!

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Hello Bloggers Megan and Anderson and Erica

This is so creepy how well can you know a person when dating them this alleged killer is ordinary in a creepy way.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:13 pm ET

@Gayle...I don't think one "hides" the other side of their personality. We all have alter egos.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:13 pm ET

I don't understand why people say that Markoff looks like someone you can trust. Most sereial killers look like him.

Parth from Jersey   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Hello Anderson and fellow bloggers

Vanessa, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

well, obviously this guy wasn't as smart as he thought..he's been watching too much crime dramas.

Carey Hobart   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Re Markoff.
Read Robert Ware's book "Without Conscience" and remember psychopaths are EVERYWHERE and there are things you can do to be aware, particularly as women. Not that Markoff is guilty, it just made me think of this group in our population...very scary.

Ann Mitchinson   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I think Markoff's girlfriend doesn't want to admit that he did these terrible things simply because she'll be losing her future doctor. She has been with him through med school. Now she'll never get her pay off.

Chris Sosa - Boston, MA   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Actually, Anderson, the concept of keeping "souvenirs" is very common in relation to violent criminals. I actually don't know of a sociopathic killer who hasn't done it.

On the fiance, someone needs to tell her that there's no such thing as a person who "wouldn't hurt a fly." Very gullible. I feel bad for her.

Rebekah   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

all of these crazy crimes that are being committed (allegedly, of course) actually make sense to me... well, at least i can understand why this 'Craigslist Killer' guy kept "momentos"... anyone ever read the Lovely Bones? really, all of these murders and crimes that somewhat remind me of murder mysteries are really starting to freak me out...

starr formerly known as vincent   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

These latest murder stories (in fact most murder stories like these) creep me out. I really wish the media would not give so much attention to these ugly incidents.

Donna in MD   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

I don't mean in any way to trivialize the suffering this man is putting others through, but"Trophies"? "souvenirs"? Sounds exactly like Voldemort in Harry Potter!

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:14 pm ET

Understand how there is someone that seems to be mild mannered. Some people hold all of their emotions and then they snap...

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:15 pm ET

People are not allways what they seem there had to be signs of behvoiral problems anger issues to say the laest..

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Markoff "mental Problems" Check his past! Probably some strange thing happened to him as a child or maybe he just has mental problems!
Has anyone spoken to his parents? I read one girl he was in High School with said he was teased and he was a bully to others as well!
He seems to think everyone is beneath him?

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:15 pm ET

The only person to blame for this is Markoff (if he's guilty *cough cough*), not the victims, not the fiancee.

LauraMac09   April 22nd, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Hey Erica! Thats good news!

Alicia Davis Chicago Il   April 22nd, 2009 10:15 pm ET

I heard the conversation about the wives/girlfriends ....are we really amazed they dont know. Honestly, has anyone ever known anyone who TELLS they are a mass murderer or child molestor? Really ? Why do we always seem surpised that the closest people didnt have a clue.

David, Indiana   April 22nd, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Evening Anderson, Erica everyone. Happy Earth Day to you all eventhough I got distracted by the international news today. But managed to enjoy a few earth day reports.

Trotting out all the nightmare guys. Ok but this person has not even been tried yet. I agree it's a strange case, though.

Anderson, my comment is that Miss California's answer wasn't all that gracious, but she was honest, and tried to be respectful. Oh I mean you could see this different ways. People get kind of rough on each other.

Caroline, Los Angeles   April 22nd, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Hi all,

I like that man who commented about the "all American sociopath". He's so right. They are experts at image management, isn't that what he said?

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Ms. USA:

Pakistan is a disaster; Obama administration must look at the long run and try to load India in case of Pakistan becoming a terrorist state.

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:16 pm ET

Susan Boyle just bought some new clothes. She's fine. I would do the same thing. She will definitely be able to afford a whole new wardrobe when the money starts rolling in.

Good evening, Anderson Cooper!

Hi, 360 team, friends, bloggers, everyone!

Today is Earth Day!
The Earth needs of both attention and care!

Anthonia-California   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Heey Yall! Happy Wednesday :)

Maybe Markoff just wanted to break out of his "good boy" image, and do something that no one would ever expect him to do...like to kill someone.

James from TN   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

Evening Erica, A/C and Bloggers,

It's always the one you never expect to do anything but, why would that girl go there anyway. Especially off of Criiaglist.

Rebekah   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

i think this is very convenient that this Taliban story is coming out tonight – i just started a social/political art project and it involves Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. maybe AC360 can help me with more information with this... =] actually, that story last night about the man allegedly trying to sell his daughter (the girl from Slumdog Millionaire) helped me out here too! you guys are amazing!

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

@Linda, I don't understand that either I trust NO ONE!

gayle mccauley Malden,Mass.   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

@Casey .Yes we all have alter egos, but not necessarily ones that take the form of a violent person or a killer.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

hey erica! im still trying to convince myself today is wednesday and not thursday! oye! lol

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I don't have a question, but I have to say that as soon as "Miss California" suggested that being gay was a "choice" she showed herself to be a loser.

As lame as it is, if someone wants to be "Miss America," no political question should be off limits.

Andrea, TN   April 22nd, 2009 10:17 pm ET

I know a lot of people side with Miss CA for standing by her convictions, and others like me who believe in same sex marriage kind of think 'ugh'. But I agree that shouldn't have cost her the crown, being honest. But you know what? I think what cost her the crown was not being able to say her own thoughts coherantly. Is everyone else missing that? "Opposite marriage" "in MY country"...girl couldn't express herself clearly at all. And isn't the whole point of Miss America/USA to be a spokesperson?

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:18 pm ET

I 'd hate having to be the one on the jury trying to decifer if he is guilty and hearing the evidence .

Carole   April 22nd, 2009 10:18 pm ET

If Miss CA thinks her answer cost her the crown, perhaps she should change her negative views of same sex marriages.

marie shear   April 22nd, 2009 10:18 pm ET

360 is the best and most informative show. Anderson , Please don't ever leave cnn.

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:19 pm ET

sociopaths are fascinating people indeed, Anderson... I run a Child and Adol psych ward and we can see who are the most likely to be on the news later in life. Like I said, they are very careful on what they do and say. Real smart kids. But one has to learn and understand why they turn out to be who they are–family history is important to know as well as earlier relationships with family.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Hopefully Pakistan can do something to keep the Taliban away...or under control.... yikes! :(

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Happy Earth Day anyone done anything to conserve energy and better the envoironment?

Saera El Paso, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:19 pm ET

Somehow the fact that this guy (allegedly) kept souvenirs doesn't surprise me. Happy people without serious issues keep medals, pictures, keychains, rocks, etc. It follows that someone would keep mementos from his victims. This might sound a bit off, but it's a lot like Voldemort in the Harry Potter series..... in the books he kept little things like a harmonica from the peolpe he tortured...

Steve R. Nova Scotia   April 22nd, 2009 10:19 pm ET

It's hard to believe that the Pakistani government, despite billions of dollars in aid from the United States to help fight "the war on terror", is allowing the Taliban to advance on their capital city. What's up with that? Taliban with nukes....there's a pretty picture.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Taliban well who could have guessed that? I really think Pakistan needs to stand up and take control and stop relying on someone else to save them!

This is just gotten out of control!

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:20 pm ET

@Cristy...except a "neutral" response can make you look like a dummy–especially after your credibility takes a hit when parading around on high heels in a bathing suit (with blonde hair). This contest needs to go away–it's over the top in this day and age.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:20 pm ET

@chris sosa,

very true, they all keep souviniers. these keepsakes of theirs has often been the breaking evidence to actually convict them.

LauraMac09   April 22nd, 2009 10:21 pm ET

RE: Sharon...Sometimes, these folks mental wires seem to get crossed. Its a bad analogy, but sometimes, dogs are just violent...crazy violent. Its the old nature/nurture issue. Sometimes its both...or one, or neither.

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:21 pm ET

If any one speaks a differnce of opinion why do they always get chatised for it bears no rreason not to weear the crown ipeople are entitled to thier opinions regardless aren't they ?

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:21 pm ET

What the Taliban are asking for is insane.

Mike Syracuse, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:21 pm ET

Miss CA was only giving an honest answer. One which 55% of America agrees with, including Obama. She was robbed.

Mike M. - Kansas City, MO   April 22nd, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Well if you needed any proof that you cant make deals with terrorist I give you Pakistan as an example.

David, Indiana   April 22nd, 2009 10:22 pm ET

Of course if he's innocent he's not leading a double life.

Maybe his girlfriend isn't as practiced at defending him against a media onslaught as an experienced trial lawyer.

CJ in Texas   April 22nd, 2009 10:22 pm ET

That "controversial" answer given by Miss California was probably the best thing that will ever happen to her – look who's getting all the attention. By the way, who is Perez Hilton anyway?

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Leave Miss USA alone so what she spoke her opinon on the issue of same sex marriage it's not to say it interfears with her title .

One of the most important, intriguing and frightening stories today:
the Talibans increasing power and influence in Pakistan.

Octavoia Nasr, CNN's Sr Editor for Middle East Affairs, wrote a great blog earlier this month that defnitely resonates today:
http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009/04/02/al-qaeda-under-the-bed/

francis michael   April 22nd, 2009 10:23 pm ET

I glad Ms. Calif believes here comments cost her the crown – now she can feel the sting of discrimination that gay men and women feel everyday.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:23 pm ET

the whole Pakistan problem really makes me wonder if the Cold War ever really ended....

Jonny, KY   April 22nd, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Glad to have Peter Bergen speaking on this subject. Useful news!

Jishnu   April 22nd, 2009 10:23 pm ET

Why is America not understanding threats and risks in advance..India was saying again and again from 90s onwards that situation will come to this point.

LisaL - Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:23 pm ET

what bothers me the most about this craigslist killer case, is that there are no guarantees that this guy was working alone. what if he was doing this with someone – which means that there could well be someone still in the boston (presumably) area watching.

i would assume that things such as IP address and DNA would be involved in the alleged charges. or maybe he just did it, and was merely a psychopath who is now off the streets.

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

On Miss America -

Her answer – just the way she said it – was sloppy. So she has to admit that much.

However – I saw Perez on MSNBC saying all this crude stuff about her. It was then I realized that he only cared what her opinion was going to be. Even if she gave a grammatically crappy response (as she did) but she agreed with Perez – he would have given her a higher score no doubt. He tried to say that's not what his issue with her was but he was lying. He contradicted himself in that same interview. He wasn't making a lot of sense. He comes across as immature and crude.

The only thing this fued has done is got a few more people to pay attention to Miss USA. Too bad for the producers/directors that it was already over when the fued boiled over.

Jerome Raleigh, NC   April 22nd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Anderson, Ericka I love the show. Happy Earth Day everyone lets do our part everyday.

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

@ David, Indiana

I agree with you. Miss California showed personality and courage to take such a stance politically considered in(correct), regardless of we agree or not with her.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Miss California was asked the question by an openly homosexual man...I understand that she was answering honestly, but it was really more of a tell them what they want to hear type question...

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

Pakistan is breeding the terrorists and they are getting out of controlthere is no reasoning

Lori from IL   April 22nd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

@Anderson - "Doesn't he watch cop shows?" LOL - was probably too busy planning his next crime to tune into Law & Order SVU!

Ann   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

People keep asking how those around Markoff, especially his fiance, didn't have a clue. The answer is, these guys are sociopaths. I recently learned the man in my life for the last 7 years had given me an alias & taken on a totally made-up persona for my benefit.. He is now being litigated for ID theft (mine & others), bank fraud, wire fraud, & postal fraud. Sociopaths are very smart & experts at exploitation. Markoff is innocent until proven guilty. However, recognizing him as a sociopath, I have no trouble at all believing this intelligent, good-looking guy could in fact be guilty.

Kathy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

People have been advising that Pakistan would be the next major hot spot. All we need is to be in Pakistan, Afgahnastan and Iraq. I don't envy those in charge.

Mike Syracuse, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

So these are the people Obama thinks he can deal with? Good luck with that.

Christine   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Re: Miss California, why should she be attacked for her answer? She shares the same view as everyones favorite president. Most people really don't want gays to be married, if they are truly honest. Me, I don't think marriage is all that great anyway. Never saw a very happy one, it is very rare to see a long marriage where two people still love and respect each other.

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

@Carole RE: Ms. USA,

She admits is cost her the crown but the diffrence is she is stood up for her beliefs in front of a Nation, and she is proud of her response. She would rather loose the crown to voice her positon to billions...

Jonny, KY   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Giving a moronic answer cost her the crown!

Or, you know. Was the other girl prettier or something?

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

"Miss CA was only giving an honest answer. One which 55% of America agrees with, including Obama. She was robbed."

You're way behind on your poles. And the woman is clearly a biggot.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

@casey, agreed, these pageants are so outdated. they do need to be stopped. its degrading to women, just cuz she can wear a bikini doesnt mean she can achieve world peace. :)

Jishnu   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Why is USA allowing Taliban to creep further and further inside Pakistan? Do we think current Pakistan government will control these guys..

Georgia Hefler   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

About Miss California, You go girl!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the problem in this world. There is a lot of people not speaking up about their beliefs because there might be someone who does not agree with them. She is the woman I'd wanted to see represent the U.S. When she gave her answer, I stood up and clapped for her. She seems to have a VERY GOOD religious background and I am very proud of her. If she is ask if she would change her answer if asked the question again, I hope it would still be the same!!!!!!!!!

Mike   April 22nd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

Pakistan is soon to be a weapons depot for the taliban...they need to wake up and let the U.S. military do the job!

Zoee - Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Regarding Miss CA, I really don't think that it's what she said just how she said it. It was a poorly formulated answer.

Gina - Missouri   April 22nd, 2009 10:26 pm ET

The taliban with nukes is a scary thought...

Presley   April 22nd, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Can we just stop talking about Miss California all together???

Just a suggestion. Thanks.

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:26 pm ET

The Pakistan country is making war and nuclear wepons they are powerful and need to be stopped .

Suzi   April 22nd, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Happy Earth Day everyone!! Pakistan needs to step it up against the Taliban! What are they spending our billions of dollars in aid on exactly?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:26 pm ET

It is truly frightening to hear that about the increase in the Taliban's power and influence in Pakistan...very scary.

LisaL - Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:27 pm ET

while the young lady in the beauty contest is certainly entitled to speak her mind, she wasn't really well spoken. i thought her answer was undiplomatically delivered.

Why are we focusing on someone who speaks her mind and sticks up to what she believes in? I am proud of her for standing up for herself!

Re: Perez Hilton

what a low class person who would do anything to get 30 secs of fame. Shame on you!

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:27 pm ET

@Casey,

I agree...the contests are pointless today....I heard they used to have their roots based on Christian principles, but that was 50 yrs. ago...so Ms. California would have won then...but beliefs have changed over time...

LauraMac09   April 22nd, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Pakistan will do whatever suits Pakistan.

Monica M. Williams   April 22nd, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Miss California loss of the crown: Here's a thought maybe Miss California lost the crown because someone else out-rated her in overall pagent skills not just a simple question.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:27 pm ET

Miss California said what she believed and that is ok! We all have our opinions that is what makes America the great place it is! So why did the judge feel so inclined to dog this girl out just because he feels one way she feels another?

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Ms. North Carolina...see I knew that!

Steve Reyes   April 22nd, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Miss CA gave her answer POORLY. That's why she didn't win.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:28 pm ET

The Winner was on the Today Show....today.......She played the game smart and stayed out of the nonsense when asked about it.

Sandra Robertson, GA   April 22nd, 2009 10:28 pm ET

Good evening Anderson, Erica & Randi. Markoff, if he is this evil sociopathic killer, was very good at covering up his psychological illness. It seems so strange to me that people this ill can manipulate and control others, like Markoff's fiance. She had no clue whatsoever?

Parth from Jersey   April 22nd, 2009 10:29 pm ET

I believe that equal rights movement for homosexuals lost some steps due to the idiotic comments by Perez Hilton.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:29 pm ET

So what is Mr Hilton's problem? Does he simply have a problem with people who disagree with him?

I agree with Gay marriage but I disagree with taking away my rights to my own opinion!

Alice   April 22nd, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Let's stop blaming the fiance of craigslist killer for not knowing or seeing any clues. People who can do this are spectacularly good at compartmentalizing their lives. I was married to a compulsive gambler (sounds like this craiglist guy might be one too) and had absolutely no idea until all of our $ was completely gone. He is a lawyer, smart, charming, funny, personable. He could have murdered people too, for all I know. He really had completely separate compartments/lives.

Mike M. - Kansas City, MO   April 22nd, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Well the irony of the pageant is that the organizers say it "empowers women." But here is a woman that empowered herself to say what she felt and is being criticized for it.

laura   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I have no problem with Miss Cal stating her opinion. I am curious as to what country she thinks she is from.

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

The person has the right to have an opinion.

Jeffrey - IN   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Gotta love when people ask a question and then tell you how you should answer. My g/f does that to me a lot! :)

Lori from IL   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Ms USA -

No matter whether a person agrees with her views or not - this is a free country and everyone has a right to their opinion - Although Ms. California could probably have worded her answer better, a judge should not score her based on whether her beliefs were in line with his. Now I know why I don't watch these shows.

And, Anderson - I believe the winner was Ms. North Carolina - and no, I didn't use Google!

Fay - California   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I don't agree with Miss California on gay marriage, but Perez Hilton went too far when he called her derogatory names.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

the homophobia storm is brewing commercial is super funny! Ridiculous...Stephen Colbert did a great parody.

Anthonia-California   April 22nd, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Julie - Boston   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

That was a loaded question. She was nervous. She could be guilty of not articulating well but she gave an honest answer. Mr., Hilton is showing his ignorance and intolerance – just what our country needs more of...

David, Indiana   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

@Isabel, I agree the earth needs attention and care, I love that you said that.

Pakistan has endured a lot to help the US in south Asia and Afghanistan. The Swat valley and Buner region are just a slim strip of land, but I feel SOS Clinton is sensibly and compassionately considering what his going on in Pakistan. It's worrying to hear Peter Bergen say Pakistan's economy is dematerializing. Maybe we need to appreciate the hardships people in Pakistan have suffered to help us. Also there's an expected pressure on Pakistan as the US increases troops in Afghanistan.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Ms. California should be attacked because she represents the entire USA–our country that is based on the constitution NOT ON RELIGION. She also incorrectly states that I chose to be gay.

What we didn't hear were the huge rounds of boos from the audience when she made that statement. NBC edited it out as it got replayed in later time zones.

Vanessa, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

So we finally have a girl that can speak her mind instead of same old answer "world peace"..and she looses a contest where she parades in a bikini. Our country is amazing.

victoria   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Miss California – Too bad that she lives in my state. Darn!

Velma   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

An actor on Gray's Anatomy was fired for allegedly making a derogatory comment about one of the other actors. After he was required to make a public apology to the entire gay community. Why is alright for this gay judge to vilify this woman and make derogatory comments because she does not have the same views as he?

Maureen T, Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Miss California put her foot in her mouth. She should`ve kept her opinion to herself. Whether we want to believe it or not she should`ve been politically correct in her answer! What you truly believe you should share with your close friends and family!

starr formerly known as vincent   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

We all heard her answer, she said that she lives in a land that can choose (wrong on that answer) and then injected a personal belief.

It was simply NOT a good answer...it did not expand on the issue, she showed a lack of diplomacy...etc.

Miss America needs to represent ALL of America!

Jacqueline, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:31 pm ET

Amen, Roland!
That's all I am saying...

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

All these pagents create such controversy first they fall they give opinoins and it's all over the crown has been tarnished.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

How can she say what she said and then say she didn't mean it to be offensive? Everything she has said since the pageant proves that she didn't deserve to be "Miss America."

Genevieve M, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Perez Hilton had no business being a judge for Miss USA. I am not saying this because he is gay, it is that this guy has no credentials at all to be judging clothing and or looks of anyone!

I had no objections when Carson Kressley was a judge at the 2005 Miss Universe, because "fashion" is his business and he used to work for designer Ralph Lauren. Tim Gunn is another gay male who I think would qualify to judge a pageant because he is also in the "fashion industry" and he currently works at Liz Claibourne.

Mike Syracuse, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Parez Hilton is an example that shows that those who preach tolerance and diversity most are the least tolerant of those who have different opinions.

Dulcie - Denver   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

If Ms. California lost the pageant for anything, it was that she poorly articulated her reply. There were also more politically correct ways to reply without compromising her values.

Joe Terrogano   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

How inappropriate for "Perez" to call that young lady names. What an insecure jerk. I am not homophobic, just anti-histrionic. Grow up.

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Another thing...Why would someone so convicted be interviewing for the job positon of representing all....didn't she know the mission statement of Ms. USA before applying for this "job interview".

Similarly, when applying for a job, you do your research, you are relevent to the mission/purpose of the organization and you craft your response get the prize....

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Ms. California implied that being gay is a choice. It is not.

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

She may not agree and still her opinion not be prejudice.

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Opposite marriage? Like "the Iraq" and "the Afghanistan"...and um, um...*smiles*
Look, I don't think it was her stance on the issue as much as how she worded it (which was terribly).

Ann Mitchinson   April 22nd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

There is no real free speech. We all must consider what we say & write. Now Miss California will only ever be Miss California.

Brandi - bottom of the boot   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Roland,

I agree. the problem i had with her answer was that she had to identify her belief as being due to what she was raised to believe in, she isnt thinking for herself. she answered it very clumsily.

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Perez Hitlon is slimy no doubt he gossips and this is getting him more time on the tv. for publicity . pleeese!!

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

I find it amazing at the applause the answer got. I would like to poll the audience and ask why they clapped for her.

BettyAnn,Nacogdoches,TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Happy Earth Day! We need to be the GOOD stewards of the planet!

Jeffrey - IN   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Miss CA seemed nervous when answering the question and I think she meant to say "in my state" not "my country".

Peter, Baltimore   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

As a gay men I may not like the answer she gave because I disagree with it completely but this is a free country and she is entitled to her opinion.

Caroline, Los Angeles   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

@Brandi-I agree. Beauty pagents should fade away. We're going to judge a woman by her beauty and then give her money for that?

And where is the equal contest for men? Male body builders don't get schlarships for college do they? Nor are they asked about gay marriage.

Carmella   April 22nd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

I say don't ask the question, if you are not willing to accept the answer. It's pretty simple, I think this is far more complicated than it has to be.
Also judges need to be judged, if her answer caused her to not to be selected, that takes the objectivity out of the process.

Sabrina   April 22nd, 2009 10:34 pm ET

This is a free country. She answered what she believes. Yea Ms. California!

Suzi   April 22nd, 2009 10:34 pm ET

I agree with Roland Martin on the Miss California controversy. She answered the question with what she believed, whether or not people agree with her they should applaud her for honesty.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:34 pm ET

@Fay...Yeah, Perez ultimately blew it. He had a lot of credibility going on and now he messed that up.

It's fair to ask the question as a current issue.

Paula, Colorado   April 22nd, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Anderson,
Hi!
I think being "Miss USA" shouldn't mean you can not have a mind or beliefs of your own. I see nothing wrong with Miss California expressing her own opinion in her own way.

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:34 pm ET

Miss California may not agree and still her opinion not be prejudice.

Jacqueline, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

So what?! Who the heck are any of those people that anyone they should determine how and what other people should feel?

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

She should have been prepared for such a question, especially with Perez as a judge. He had every right to ask it.

Samantha M.   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I think it was fair to ask the question, but it should have been asked to all contestants... Perez's name was picked at random, she didn't see his name on the card.

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Question is....will we be talking about his if Miss Kansas answered the question the same way? or is it because it is Miss California who happened to get this question and the issue of Gay marriages is a hot issue in CA?

hummm....

Peter, Baltimore   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I would like to add that the new Ms USA responded to the question on the today show the other day and she was a lot more diplomatic and articulate about it. She deserved to win

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

I agree completely with Roland Martin tonight...This is still America and everyone is still entitled to have their own opinion and I too am glad that she was honest about it...even though it was definitely one of those tell them what they want to hear question...I'm glad that she didn't

Nattada, Houston TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

On Miss California, I respect her opinion. Everybody should be truth to one's believe, yet should also be able to accept the change that comes along with open mind. I think she did the right thing to stand for her believe.

For Perez, I do not like his respond to her answer. By talking harsh about her is so wrong. He had the right to ask that question, he sould have be open for the whole range of answer come after.

victoria   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

The problem I had with Miss California is that she said, "In my country..." She is entitled to her belief but she could have presented it better. Part of being #1 is how well you speak.

Andrea, TN   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Here, I'll be diplomatic here, or maybe anger both sides – Ms. CA doesn't deserve to be Miss America, and Perez Hilton really shouldn't have been a judge, haha.

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Perez only wanted 1 answer! That is clear from the interviews he's been giving. He's so crude and immature!

Maybe if he would've shut his mouth – then it would have been more clear how sloppy her answer was. But he made it CLEAR that he was looking for 1 answer.

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

At first I thought her response was the rite one, until I realized how many people got hurt by her words....She could have been more neuteral and not hurt people while getting her point across...

Serge Charlebois   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Hello Anderson...love your show

About Miss California...I congratualate her

It is not a question of homophobia, it is not a question of politics, and it is not a question of religion. It is a question of common sense.

Man was made for woman as woman was made for man...anything else is wrong and immoral.

Kevin C   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Thank you for having the segment on the Miss America runner-up. This is totally making it up to me for missing the swimsuit competition because I was watching 60 Minutes.

Marilyn   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Who is Perez Hilton?? I've never heard of him and from what I've seen of him, I don't want to see him again.

Michelle, CT   April 22nd, 2009 10:36 pm ET

First, I'm sure the Miss USA questions are picked by producers, not a "celebrity blogger." And it's in poor taste for a judge to go on a crusade about a contestant..Aside from that her answer didn't make sense and showed she didn't understand the debate about it. "Opposite marriage" ??? " Her country"?? her country of what? California or her family? Plus, the other questions for the other contestants were quality political, and at least one of THOSE girls won.

Lauren--NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

There’s no way to prove that was the reason Miss California didn’t win, and considering there were 49 other contestants I thought it was a little arrogant of her to automatically assume she lost because the judges disagreed with her opinion. How does she know she would have been the winner out of those 50 beautiful ladies otherwise? She may have simply been beaten fair and square…there’s no way to know.

Saera El Paso, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

never say "no offense." you will always offend
the trick is to articulate your point of view in a more tactful manner

Sunny   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Perez Hilton got exactly what he asked for. Case Closed!

R. Donaldson   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

I believe that Perez Hilton did not ask a question that he wanted to hear the truth. Good job Miss California.

Laura - Va   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Perez Hilton is getting a lot of publicity for this. Could he maybe have asked the question knowingly that it would be controversial? Was it self promotion?

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

We should get rid of beauty pagents. They're too old fashioned. I would like to see something more up to date and not so...degrading...

jennie   April 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Actually i'm kind of tired of the Miss USA story. If you wanna discuss gay rights, that's a valid issue and it's great to discuss that issue but I really don't care about beauty pageants. Come on does anyone care what these girls think?

Jonathan   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

The Miss America contestant have every right to say what she did and I would fight for her right to do so. I have a right to disagree. I also have the right to use the power of my vote to say so which is what Perez Hitlon did.

Kenya   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

If "they" didn't want to hear her personal opinion, maybe they should not have ask contraversal questions. The fact that perez Hilton is hammering her for her personal opinion is sickening. This is America, and every person has the right to say what they think.

Isabel Siaba   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

After all America is a free country ... the person may have a conservative view. This is not prejudice.

Monica M. Williams   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Why can't Miss California accept the facts.......you lost. Someone else won.

This story has been blown way out of proportion.

Gina - Missouri   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

While her answer was poorly stated, it was her opinion, I think Perez Hilton was overly dramatic...

Travys velez   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

If you are in a contest to win why would you say something that would alianate a group of people?

Atlanta   April 22nd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

I don't see why this thing with Miss California is a big deal. Whether you agree with her or not, she spoke her mind and said what she believes.

Rafael Bronx,NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

She should have answer the question much differently, rather than the way she answered it.

becky in Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Yes, Ms. Cali lost because of her answer. It was inarticulate, contradictory, and "opposite marriage" what does that even mean?

LINDA   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I'm glad free speech also permits her to voice her opinion as she believes. Let's move on....please.

Chanel   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

I am a big supporter of gay rights in pretty much every way, but even I think that the criticisms of her answer are unfair. Personally, even though her view is far from mine, I find her honesty refreshing.

teng   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

situation in pakistan wouldn,t be better until they leave religion behind and country first. and Human right it doesnt matter who iam. religion is the second thing in live. or it is Human choice Pakistan and sudan are in the same situation.abusing people.I afraid of genocide in Pakistan because of religion.like what happened in south sudan for 22 years befor Darfor.between muslims and christians, what wrong if there is two brothers with difference idias..

Samantha M.   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

@Velma I think the actor was fired not only from that remark, but also because he didn't get along with a lot of the other crew members after.
But if Miss California is able to make her opinion, Perez should be able to make his too... but he shouldn't be putting her down or being rude.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

Taking heat for asserting your opinion is part of the walk. That's the risk you take when you say what you believe. Spare me on the boo-hoo posturing.

I still don't know why is the controversy on what miss california said at stage. the judge ask her opinion on something a she answer her opinion with clear mind. We people need to start think on respect the other people opinion and no make a scene on that.

Michelle - SC   April 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

Miss USA should be politically neutral. Miss California's answer was divisive. That it has created controversy is evidence that she should not be Miss USA.

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

I agree beauty pagents are not really nesesarry they use money for what ? i

Michael Coates   April 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

The Miss California "controversy" shows how much the USA has become a nation of mediocrity. When it becomes detrimental to have your own opinion that isn't politically correct and more important to appeal to the masses than it is to believe what you feel is right, the reasons the USA was founded is lost!!

jeff sherwood   April 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

I agree with Mr. Signorile...I think Miss CA's inarticulate response was the problem...she obviously had no idea what she was talking about and the question is actually a big part of the competition...thanks...Jeff

Kristin (Buffalo, NY)   April 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

The free speech argument here is unfounded. No one stopped Miss California from saying what she said. She's not being prosecuted for hate speech or anything else. She had the right to state her beliefs, whatever they happened to be. Winning the Miss USA pageant is not a right.

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm ET

I can't listen to anything to do with Melissa Huckaby anymore, all I'm doing is getting furious and spitting venom. She's a monster. Period.

Victor   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I also agree wit Roland Martian..this young lady is being branded because she answer by what she think is right... we live in a wold where freedom of speach is being taken away from us little by little if we don't agree with what the society has going than we are branded as right wings or people who aren't envoling with that world and that's very very sad

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Mike…”Parez Hilton is an example that shows that those who preach tolerance and diversity most are the least tolerant of those who have different opinions.”

That’s an easy position for someone to assert considering their civl and constituional rights have been respected their whole life, while mine have not. Try living as a second class citizen with limited rights.

I pay taxes just like you do.

Samantha M.   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I doubt Perez is in this specifically for the publicity, its just a plus for him.

Michael   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

I rather learn about the true character of anyone who represents this country in any shape or form, than listening to politically correct lies. Way to go, Miss California!

LauraMac09   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Jishnu... I don't believe that the US has control over anything the Taliban is doing in either Afghanistan or Pakistan!

jerry - Twain Harte, California   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

Miss California certainly does not represent the people of California with her "bibically correct" viewpoint towards gay people. If somebody should choose to live with somebody they love for life, shouldn't it be a special and sacred thing? Sorry, Miss California, but your point of view is as close to bigotry as anyone can get.

David, Indiana   April 22nd, 2009 10:41 pm ET

@Isabel yes, but in a public position, like Miss America, you do have to have the ability to be honest and respectful and gracious at the same time. It does seem surprisingly dramatic for the Miss America contest, usually kind of a delighful affair I think.

Tom Foreman covers all the bases

Roland has a good point about stating opinions. Get to the point, maybe no one expects any one to be right about everything.

Darren Tomalty   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Hiya,

I'm a little (lot) disturbed by Rolands indifference to gay marriage via the Miss America controversy. I thought he was a supporter of all civil rights.

I know Obama will come through in the end.

Darren

Gordon Sanek ... GenevaOnTheLake, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Beauty contestant...
No matter what a persons view, when asked a question, You should NEVER be penalized for answering the truth! ... I personally salute her for speaking the truth and her views on marriage which I also share.
remember... when the righteous stay silent, the wicked will rule.

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

It's a constituional right sto have an opinon so just leave it alone .

Vanessa, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

I really have no respect for ppl that prey on children..this woman is insane...

Rebekah   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

i wouldn't be surprised if this Melissa Huckaby had problems with multiple personalities. she's either 1.) a really good actress, 2.)she didn't do it, or 3.)she's really good at shutting things out.

i hope i never have to be part of a jury in case like this, it'd just about rip me apart, i don't know WHAT to think...

Maureen T, Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Melissa Huckaby is a very sick woman and needs some help!

Brian D   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

That was straight up loaded question from the beginning, one that you know Perez knew he was going to ask from the get go. There was no way she could answer honestly and make friends with that answer.

Darrell Smith   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

How arrogant it is that Miss California thinks her answer cost her the crown. In reality, she is probably right...her answer made no sense..the question wasn't what did she think about gay marriage, it was did she think other states should follow the lead of Vermont and other states. Thus, it wasn't the fact that she is against gay marriage it was the fact that her answer made no sense whatsoever.

I feel sorry for the true winner, Miss North Carolina. Miss California is taking the excitement and glory from her and no matter what Miss North Carolina was the winner!

becky in Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Yes, she has the right to say what she did, however, when in a competition that judges the quality of HOW you answer, not what you answer, the outcome should be obvious.

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Craigslist killer, Sunday school Killer, The boy who was bullied and commiited suicide...criticizing Miss California for standing up for herself.....what is going on in our country?

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Perez is definitely good at stirring up controversy. I'll give him that much. To get people to pay attention to the Miss America pageant – requires some sort of talent.

Hector and Lisa   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Someone should have told Miss California that she was not allowed to have her own opinion.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

So why did the Freddie Mac CFO kill himself?
More drama to come I am sure, you notice we have heard nothing of Freddie and Fannie since they were charged with Fraud!

Michelle D . Fonthill. Ont   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

There is never anything to say that someone deosn't agree with they just use it fo publicity on the pagents.

Stephen Wilkerson (Drew) MD   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Anderson,

I would also add that she should be allowed her opinion. Just because someone doesn't agree with it doesn't make her a bad person. Best,

Drew

Rafael Bronx,NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Perez Hilton also should have never asked that question in the first place. He could have asked something else. I mean there's a crisis going on in this nation. Why does he have to go mention gay rights to a beauty pageant contestant.

Sandy   April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm ET

Why is the former boyfriend of Sarah Palin's daughter getting all this media attention? He just a kid who got his girlfriend pregnant. The fact that the girlfriend is the daughter of a candidate for national office is incidental.

What kind of message does this give to young people? That if you have sex with the right person, and it results in a pregnancy, it's your ticket to fame and fortune?

There are plenty of young people who are making tremendous contributions to society. Why not interview them?

Rosie   April 22nd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

2 comments about the Miss California controversy.
First, it's called a beauty contest – none of the ladies has to be a Mensa member. So if they babble when they answer – what do we expect.
Second, I consider myself a liberal with gay and lesbian friends, but marriage is between a man and a woman.

Mary Mundth   April 22nd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Tonight is the first time I have ever agreed wtih Roland Martin! He was right on target about Miss CA. Enough said already CNN. Move on to more important news than this. It has been discussed to death. At least tonight you covered the story fairly by showing Perez's inflamed comments. He is the one to be disgusted with. Perez would have been all over the news as the victim if Miss CA had blogged offensive comments about him.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Horses are such beautiful creatures and it breaks my heart to continue to hear about the death of so many of them! It seems tainted food/vitamins are becoming a big problem.

Carole-IN   April 22nd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

I applaud Miss CA. for standing for what is biblical. Marriage is between a man and woman and yes, being gay is a choice. I detest interacial marriage and gay marriage being mentioned in the same sentence. No one chooses his or her race or ethnicity.

Rose   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Just wondering - IF Ms. California has such a deep faith in God and feels he directs her life.......WHY is she being such a poor loser?? Just MY thoughts...

lauren   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

hello, i am absolutely disgusted with the whole miss california thing controversy whatever, i am gay and i do believe that you know what regardless of who u are you should be able too love.. miss california speaks of the bible, ok the bible says the greatest gift you could give is love... i did not wake up one day and say oh i think i am gonna be gay, this country is not about anything shespoke of that is why she didn't get a crown there are 4 states that recognize gay marriage, and i got married in cali, and guess what i still couldn'tget medical onmy partners policy , this and the honest truth is its got a long way too go, butyou know what i am an american citizen and this is a civil rights issue, we need martin l. king jr. for this one...

Marquita   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Hats off to Miss Cali! Being honest and not being swayed by the enormity off the event should have been seen as a strong attribute but instead, in my opinion, had a negative impact on her chance of winning. Thats too bad.

BettyAnn,Nacogdoches,TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

We should be past the beauty pageant stage anyway. Isn't this 2009?

niwat, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

I think Miss CA response to the question was a bold answer, Later she had stated that if believing in heterosexual wedding cost her a crown, she would still have not said otherwise. what an honesty..

anyway, I'm gay man and I don't find that affronting a few bit. I believe in meaningful, heartfelt, fuctional relationship ( it may mean a wedding, a marriage which not necessarily own upto anyone but me and my significant other )

Peter, Baltimore   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

The organizer for the pageant are laughing all the way to the bank. They could not ask for better publicity.

Linda   April 22nd, 2009 10:45 pm ET

Anderson

Now that its over in a way I am glad Ms California didn't win. First of all everyone should be giving some credit to Ms N Carolina who did win. A loser always has a excuse of why they didn't win and their reason.
Also Ms America is suppose to be a representative of all America and sometimes you have to set aside your personal agendas. She is intitled to her own opinion and views but we are not always expected to go along with it. One thing that would have turned me off more than her views on gay issue was in her country, I like to know where the rest of the country who don't agree with her view live in. Too much attention given to this self-centered girl.

Brian D   April 22nd, 2009 10:46 pm ET

She could have been 100% grammatically correct and she still would have been dinged for her answer.

Malena (Los Angeles, Ca)   April 22nd, 2009 10:46 pm ET

This is so unfair to the winner of Miss USA , Kristen Dalton. She is the winner and nobody knows her name because everyone is focused on Miss. California's comments. Much like the Don Imus/Rutgers situitation. The girls couldn't enjoy their win because his comments shifted the focus.

LINDA   April 22nd, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Do we really need a pagents opinion or Perez Hiltons for that matter?controversy is what they wanted controversy is what they got.

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:46 pm ET

@Paula,

I don't think that is posible, the job position is to symbolize the Country. Her job is to be diplomatic.

Monica M. Williams   April 22nd, 2009 10:46 pm ET

Thanks Randi K and Erica H for asking the questions I wanted to hear regarding the Craigslist killing. Great reporting.

Hi Anderson. AC360 Rules!

Have a great evening everyone.

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

This is a story for Jerry Springer....I would totally watch that!

Richard   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

I praise Miss California for standing for her beliefs and those of most of us Amercans. Didn't like her answer then why ask it.

Rikki, Fargo, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Yay! Levi Johnston and the Palin's ....my night is complete now!

John, Northwood, ND   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

I don't care what Miss Califorinia's opinion on gay marriage is, what bothered me in her response was she ended "but that's the way I was raised" and that that kind of unquestioning and non-thinking rational is actually respected and considered a legitimate basis for a position on an issue. We would be so far behind socially from where we are today if everyone just accepted things based on how they were raised. We need to consider and think about issues much more then just accepting the past.

julie   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Regarding ms. california: We're talking about an archaic meat market pageant. Come on people, why should anyone care what she thinks? I don't and I'm a lesbian. You have to consider the source.

Fay - California   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Ok, are there REALLY people out there dying to hear Levi Johnson's "deep" thoughts?

Paula - NE   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

Miss California gave her answer. Obviously, it wasn't the answer the judges wanted to hear.

Rosemary Foltz   April 22nd, 2009 10:47 pm ET

I have a question about the Miss America comment , Was the same question asked to everyone, that would have been a fair way to judge the answer but if you single out only one persons answer and then judge them on the answers, then no it was not fair for the judge to make such comments in the way he did. And this is America so we all the right to speak our minds.

Rafael Bronx,NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

I actually saw that interview on LKL earlier today. I think that's sad that the Pailin's don't let Levin spend time with his own child.

Atlanta   April 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Wow, Levi is one articulate fella.....

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Children having children.

Cessy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Anderson, i have a headache...tonights discussions are a bit too much...how about making us laugh and have the 360 Crew dance for us tonight?

James in TN   April 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Here's my question...What made Perez qualified to be a judge?

CJ in Texas   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Good job, Roland!

Nattada, Houston TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I do not know if I want to know more aboutPalin-Johnston story. Why can't Levi see his own son anyway?

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

OMG this kid needs to stay home learn some skills he has NO commnunication skills that is obvious!
He is a bad joke go home get a life LEVI! idiot! Hope your Parents Aren't proud of you!

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Levi seems innocent I don't think he could hurt anyone intentionally....

Azeez, Hillside, NJ   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Go Levi! Please dont stop..

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

So true you guys, that watching tv at work is...work...my excuse at school all the time!

Maureen T, Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Levi`s 15 minutes are up, aren`t they.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Come on, were Johnson's words really worth hearing? I didn't watch LKL.

Gina - Missouri   April 22nd, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Levi "I don't kiss and tell..." what a lie!

Lauren--NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:50 pm ET

Stephen Wilkerson (Drew) MD   April 22nd, 2009 10:50 pm ET

These Shoes were made for planting... and that's just what I'll do... One of the days these shoes are going to plant all over you.

Drew

Rebekah   April 22nd, 2009 10:50 pm ET

well, geez! if watching Larry King Live is considered "work" at CNN, then i want to work for CNN!

Caroline, Los Angeles   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I feel sorry for those two kids Palin and Levi. It's bad enough to become parents when you aren't ready for it, then you break up, then
the whole world knows about it. That's a lot for two young adults to handle.

Mike M. - Kansas City, MO   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

OMG...Fay. That is something I thought I never would of heard in the same sentence. Levi Johnson and deep thoughts.

Sandra Robertson, GA   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I watched Larry King earlier and I really feel for the Johnston family, especially Levi. I hope they will be able to work visitation out with the Palin family. This little baby, Trip, needs his daddy too.

Laura - Va   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I wish she would have stayed the same. All Susan has to do is sing and all else is forgotten.

Nattada, Houston TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

There will be a lot of vegtable in the "long-life recipe".
Be prepare for it, Anderson. :)

BettyAnn,Nacogdoches,TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I believe we should all think for ourselves and that includes sometimes questioning how we were raised.

Barbara in Boston   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I just think Miss California sounded like a ditz ....

Sorry, I don't have any sympathy for beauty pageant contestants.

LisaL - Canada   April 22nd, 2009 10:51 pm ET

Levi's answer was pretty good... so... you'd like to discuss my personal sex life on national tv? sorry, I don't kiss and tell

(i'm sure everyone wants the dirt – obviously they did, since Bristol had a baby, but really, there is a limit to what people feel they "have to know")

keith from New Jersey   April 22nd, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Miss California was asked for her opinion and thats what she gave her opinion that marriage is between a man and woman . She did not condem same sex marriage supporters she just gave her opinion .

Gloria, Brooklyn, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Good program, Anderson. Have a good night everyone.

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:52 pm ET

This is so unfair to the winner of Miss USA , Kristen Dalton. She is the winner and nobody knows her name because everyone is focused on Miss. California’s comments. Much like the Don Imus/Rutgers situitation. The girls couldn’t enjoy their win because his comments shifted the focus.

Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise for her. Everyone is talking about it. She can do numerous interviews and even write a book that people would buy. She's had to have figured that out by now. Her star power is much bigger than it would've been if she would've answered the question a different way.

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Is Anderson eating his vegetables?

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

@Erica Hill and @Anderson Cooper

Do you check out Dan’s vitality compass? How were the results of you? :)

BettyAnn,Nacogdoches,TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Levi is so full of himself and so is Palin! Let's move on~

Lori from IL   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

It's about that time.....

Anderson, Erica and Team 360 - interesting mix of topics tonight - although I could have done without Perez Hilton and Sarah Palin. Thanks for showing Beat 360 -

Fellow Bloggers - interesting chat tonight –

And, Erica, yes, I agree - 360 should have sent you to Greece for this story –

Until tomorrow night .....peace, everyone.

Anthonia-california   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Whenever i hear Sarah Palin's daughter's baby daddy talk about his issues, i always hear, "blah blah blah" and more "blah blah blah!" the blahing just cant stop can they :)

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

As Spock said: "Live long and prosper"

Jasmine-Spokane, WA   April 22nd, 2009 10:53 pm ET

Jacqueline, NY   April 22nd, 2009 10:54 pm ET

How about quality life? A meaningful life?

Vanessa, TX   April 22nd, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Anderson said it best..*pause* in his own words..that Levi certainly knows public speaking.

Chris Sosa - Boston, MA   April 22nd, 2009 10:54 pm ET

I feel quite sorry for Levi. I've never had a high opinion of the Palin family, and if anyone seems to be fishing for fame/wealth in the midst of circumstance, I think that would be them.

Hilda Bennet]]   April 22nd, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Apparently, Susan Boyles has decided to step out of a very isolated life to reveal her talent. She may as well decide to have a make over to coincide with her new adventure. It may be necessary if she choses to advance in the intertainment world.

Jo Ann, North Royalton, Ohio   April 22nd, 2009 10:54 pm ET

I would agree with that. I use olive oil that way.

Isabel   April 22nd, 2009 10:54 pm ET

Esma   April 22nd, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Great...now I'm hungry...man, that looks good!

Miss J   April 22nd, 2009 10:55 pm ET

A good answer to that same sex marriage question (for Miss California) would have been

“It doesn’t matter what my personal belief is about the issue because we live in a free country. I believe in separation of church and state so although I may not agree with what my neighbor says or thinks or where he goes to church, I stand by his right to make those decisions for himself.”

Casey Jones - Palm Springs, CA   April 22nd, 2009 10:55 pm ET

YES to olive oil and red wine! I'll drink to that!!

Cristy Kirssin   April 22nd, 2009 10:55 pm ET

Tip: Reveratrol is the antioxident in red wine.

The media has been hard on Sarah Palin's kids and Levi Johnson and his family, seems like.

Oh all that stuff looks delicious. These are great stories from Ikaria.

Sharon S   April 22nd, 2009 10:58 pm ET

That is so funny I love beans all types and I love wine! and I always try to drink a glass with meals but my parents have good genes too so I may live forever at this point! Great to know!

Kathy, Chicago   April 22nd, 2009 10:58 pm ET

I'm ok with the wine and olive oil, but not so hot on the beans. The test puts me at life until 93. I will have to adjust. I thought there would be fish, also.

I think they should travel to Algeria. I have been there and i loved it. the berber culture should be looked at closer.

Miss California had a perfect right to express her opinion. The Judge had a perfect right to ask her about gay marriage. But her answer was absolutely inarticulate, clumsy, stupid and WRONG because currently in America there is NO choice between gay marriage or straight marriage. If there was a choice and equality of rights, there would be no debate about the issue. I'm glad she lost...I don't want someone who doesn't know her own country's laws representing as Miss America.

What happened to all the troops that were chasing the taliban in 2001? Oh yeah, the got diverted to Iraq with all the money and resources as well. An invasion that has cost us much more than monetary resources.

If Susan want to change, she has all the right and support to do so. But I think however she chang outside, her inside will stay the same. There is nothing wrong if she wants to look better.

Good night everyone.
Have a great Thursday tomorrow.
