Obama made right call on rescue

A president makes many decisions, but none is more important than those he makes as commander in chief. Committing young men and women to war zones where their lives are at risk is a decision that can't be easily reversed, and the consequences can be fatal.

The second type of difficult decision a president faces is setting the rules of engagement; allowing American troops to do their job even if that means taking the life of the enemy.

Ronald Reagan, a president I served, was beloved by the American military. He rebuilt a military crippled by the nightmare of Vietnam. After the humiliating evacuation from that costly war, we had planes that couldn't fly and ships that couldn't sail due to missing parts and deferred maintenance.

Given how much you seem to dislike Obama, Mr. Rollins, I'm quite surprised to hear you give him praise for anything.

I do have to wonder about the wisdom of only being willing to praise someone because they were willing to order people shot to death, however.

You see, the problem with the Republicans is that they seem to love war, love the rich, and hate anything that might be good for them.

While I do agree that a firm hand was needed, even killing the pirates involved, I think you need to reconsider your stance on other issues and look at things from a broader point of view.

Obama has done very well on most things in his Presidency, this is just one instance.

Considering we dont negotiate with terrorists and pirates who have been around for well hundreds of years at least, and the fact that they demand money which we dont and should never pay, and considering that they were going to kill him, what other option was there other than to take them out. We had to kill them.

Ed,

Thank you for the story on Ronald Reagan – I had never heard that one before and it made me appreciate all over again how very good Reagan was as President.

I was impressed with everyone's performance on the pirate situation and very glad that Obama gave the Navy the permission to do what needed to be done. Obama not only enabled the Navy to rescue one of our own but to demonstrate that Jefferson's maritime principles put in place back in the days of the Barbary pirates. The pirates should know now that America will not sit idly by and let their citizens be taken hostage on the high seas. If the rest of the countries would do the same perhaps piracy would no longer be profitable to pursue.
